Trump cuts deal.... with Democrats?

So... a great deal of consternation is seething out of the GOP leadership as the President decided to side with the Democrats on a deal that would tie Hurricane relief spending to a short three month extension of the debt ceiling.

The GOP leadership and even some members of Trump's own administration were pushing for a longer debt extension to be tied to relief package. Many wanted as much as 18 months. But the deal put in place, according to many... takes away precious "leverage" that the GOP was thought to have.

But to be clear here folks... is that most conservatives (at least fiscal conservatives) are not big fans of increasing the debt ceiling. During the entire Obama Presidency, the GOP used the debt ceiling as a bargaining chip. Raising the limit was seen by conservatives as giving in to the Obama/Democrat of out of control deficit spending. They continuously argued for short term increases, in some effort to control (or at least provide the optics of controlling) what our Government spent.

Many of the harder core conservative voices on cable news have recently argued strenuously against tying Harvey relief spending to any long term rise of the debt ceiling. Apparently, while most people (on both sides) have reflexively "switched sides" on the issue of the debt ceiling, now that we have a Republican rather than a Democrat in the White House (go figure)... some have stuck to their guns.

It is an interesting question if you think about it.  If raising the debt ceiling was a "bad thing" for you two years ago, why is it a "good thing" today?  If raising the debt ceiling was a "good thing" for you two years ago, why is it a "bad thing" today? Partisanship has no logic, huh?

Now I don't pretend to know "exactly" why Trump cut this deal. But I do know that he was turning his back more so on the mainstream establishment GOP crowd, than turning his is his back on the base "conservative" crowd. Politics makes strange bedfellows, and in this case the mainstream Democrats and hard core conservatives actually agreed with each other (albeit for entirely different reasons).

It's possible that he was sending a message to the McConnell/Ryan block of mainstream Republicans (as in get something done, or I will start working with the other side). It's possible that he is hoping to garner a bit of good will with the Democrats for future negotiations. It's possible that he thought that any attempts to "leverage" the Hurricane relief funding into some sort of tangible GOP political victory was just not the right thing to do. It's possible that he is just a crazy old man, high on meth, who thought it would be funny to side with Schumer and Pelosi as a big goof.

Liberals Lie. Nothing news worthy there.

Pres goes to his roots art of the deal for all Amercans. Remember to win Trump had to beat Democrat Elites, Media Elites and REPUBLICAN ELITES.

I agree and would also add McCain. Time for them to fall in line with the new leader of the Republican party.

I have been watching the response from Democrats. It's almost universally praised. I posted earlier than I thought it was a damn good idea. I just checked out his Twitter feed, and no meth inspired attacks on the Democrats or Republicans.

The biggest problem, is in the house. The Freedom Caucus has been able to block anything. Ryan's going to stifle them. They want to replace him. It's not going to happen. The DACA reform bill is lacking only about four more Republicans, they could reach the 60 vote level for passage.

If he doesn't go back on meth, we might actually get things done.

Republicans Finally Find Something to Be Angry About

First Read: “What’s particularly striking about yesterday, however, is the reaction from GOP congressional leaders, as well as rank-and-file Republicans: They were livid, and they communicated that outrage to reporters. So what ultimately incensed them (at least publicly and so quickly) wasn’t Charlottesville, or Arpaio, or DACA – it was Trump agreeing to a three-month increase of the debt limit.”
“Then again, it’s not like Ryan, McConnell and other Republicans weren’t warned. Ever since Trump captured the GOP nomination in 2016, there have been three political parties in Washington – the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, and Trump Party. And yesterday was the Trump Party flexing its muscles.”

James Hohmann: “Another key reason Republican leaders are mad: Trump has once again humiliated Paul Ryan.”

Robert Dallek said...

How Not to Be President

Robert Dallek: “Eight months into Donald Trump’s presidency, it is impossible to imagine him unifying the country behind his leadership. To be sure, the issues today are vastly different from those Roosevelt faced. Indeed, the calmer waters Trump sails on as president—calmer by any measure, for all the challenges—should make the task easier. He inherited an economy that was in decent shape and a country that faced no existential threats from the outside, whatever the ongoing dangers posed by terrorism.

“Instead, Trump offers a master class in how not to be president. He has deepened skepticism about his suitability for the highest office by raging at opponents, decrying the media as enemies of the American people, dismissing as disloyal those who are in any way critical, and offering distorted versions of reality on virtually every subject, starting with the claim that the first 100 days of his administration were the most successful in history. His ignorant and offhand approach to foreign policy—first and foremost, his seemingly deliberate attempts to weaken and even threaten NATO—has dismayed America’s allies and emboldened its enemies. A special counsel has been appointed to investigate Russian interference in the election, reminding Americans of the process that drove Richard Nixon from office.

“Trump would do well to study Roosevelt and, surely, Lincoln, along with other presidents, to grasp how they sought (or failed to seek) broad popular unity. It says something fundamental about the man that no one imagines he would actually do this. The problem is not just that it would take work. The larger problem is that he has no interest in the goal.”

Matt Bai said...

Republicans Have a Choice to Make on Immigration

Matt Bai: “Trump is not a guy who resents illegal immigration because it’s unsafe for the country and unfair to the hardworking, law-abiding immigrants who embrace our laws and ideals and who give up everything they’ve known for their children’s future. Trump is a guy who resents immigrants, period. He is a neo-nativist. His ‘America first’ actually means ‘Americans only.'

“But Republicans, in particular, have a choice to make. They can hold firm to the traditional conservative argument, or they can allow their party to be transformed by Trumpism. They can stand up for our essential identity as a nation of immigrants, or they can blame outsiders for all that ails the society.”

The biggest reason for Obamacare's rate hikes? Two of its most popular provisions, guaranteed issue and community rating. These are the technical terms for Obamacare's ban on insurance companies denying coverage or charging people who are sick more.

The McKinsey report found that in Georgia, these mandates added between 44 and 52 percent to premiums. In Ohio, they were responsible for 41 to 50 percent of the hikes -- and in Pennsylvania, as much as 62 percent. In Tennessee, guaranteed issue and community rating accounted for between 73 and 76 percent of premium increases.

This shouldn't come as a surprise. A study by Milliman, a consultancy, in 2013 predicted that Obamacare's guaranteed issue and community rating rules would sharply increase premiums.

A total of $142,00/ month. Dr appointments are $10.00 Lab tests are $30.00. MRI, CT Scan and X ray vary in price, up to $160,00 ER is $150, ad it's $200.00/ day for the hospital, all procedures and medications are included in that cost, as well as consultants, etc. The maximum co pay for a year is $4,400/ pear, including prescriptions and they are almost no more than $10.00 because of Part B For $1,704 a year with a maximum co pay above that, Social Security covered all of it. Bannon once called reporters 'the opposition party' and challenged them to 'shut up'
Now the aides who used to be his coworkers are giving him the same advice
'For someone who liked to trash talk the media, Bannon sure is kissing up to them a lot, no?' one White House aide asked on Wednesday

One aide granted that 'Steve helped get us here,' but added that 'it would be nice if he'd just go away'

Bannon did not respond to requests for comment; his '60 Minutes' interview will air Sunday and extended footage will be seen on Rose's Monday PBS show

Stephen Bannon criticized the response of the Catholic Church to President Trump’s plan to end DACA after the decision was condemned as “reprehensible,” CBS News reports.

Said Bannon: “They need illegal aliens to fill the churches. That’s– it’s obvious on the face of it.”

He added: “I totally respect the pope and I totally respect the Catholic bishops and cardinals on doctrine. This is not about doctrine. This is about the sovereignty of a nation. And in that regard, they’re just another guy with an opinion.”

“Leaders of the Freedom Caucus met with House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-WiI) on Wednesday to candidly express their frustrations with his leadership and his handling of the Republican legislative agenda, according to two people familiar with the discussion,” the Washington Post reports.

“The exchange comes as former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon is having conversations with hard-line GOP lawmakers about how they should exert greater influence in the fall’s political fights and pressure congressional Republican leaders.”

Conservatives lawmakers “have begun to discuss who could replace Ryan as speaker, should conservatives rebel against him.”

for some genuine anti-catholic behavior look no further than dickhead-bin-al-turbin and diane feinstein.

“Do you consider yourself an orthodox Catholic?” is an unusual and inappropriate question for a senator to ask a judicial nominee. In fact, the Constitution forbids it.

But that didn’t stop Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., from probing Notre Dame Law professor Amy Coney Barrett about her faith. Sen. Dianne Feinstein. D-Calif., also chided Barrett for being a practicing Catholic, proclaiming, “The dogma lives loudly within you, and that’s of concern.”

Both senators appear to have forgotten Article VI’s admonition that “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Officer or public Trust under the United States.”

The senators’ hostility to religion was loudly on display as Barrett and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, having been nominated by the president to fill two federal appellate vacancies.

NBC News dropped what the network hyped as a “potential bombshell” last week. “Manafort Notes From Russian Meet Contain Cryptic Reference to ‘Donations,'” the original headline read. The story claimed that Manafort’s notes from the 2016 Trump Tower meeting with White House aide Jared Kushner, Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer included the word “donations” near a reference to the Republican National Committee.

NBC began walking back the “potential bombshell” almost immediately, issuing a correction the same day noting that the word “donation” didn’t actually appear in the notes, but quoting one source who said the word “donor” was in the notes.

But NBC’s corrected story still wasn’t accurate, according to a new Politico report, which said that the word “donor” didn’t appear in Manafort’s notes. Moreover, Manafort’s notes “are not seen as damaging to the Trump family or campaign officials,” Politico reported. The outlet cited several sources who have seen Manafort’s notes, while NBC relied on “two sources briefed on the evidence” to make its claim.

Even before Politico fully debunked NBC’s reporting, the network’s decision to publish the story came under fire. The day after NBC originally published the story, The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple criticized the story, which he said “provides only fodder for innuendo and conspiracy, not for sound conclusions about what happened.”

Flummoxed:
The Republicans in the Congress are almost totally flummoxed by the comments and agreements with the Democrats and the president on the debt ceiling, and more. The Dreamer, he tweeted that. "you don't have to worry", after talking with minority leader Nancy Pelosi.

He has been complaining constantly about the inability of the Republicans in the Congress to get anything done in the last seven years. It appears that he has decided to reach out to use bipartisanship, because without the Democrats, nothing will get done.

If hecontinues on this path and sometimes we wonder if it's going to happen because of his past behavior but . Until December we will see a barrage of laws that need to be done.

It will be including tax reform, the wall, immigration reform, and legislation that will provide a path to citizenship for the Dreamers. The Democratic Party is united. They will vote unanimously when they get that certain point and will only take a few Republicans in the Senate to reach the 60 vote margin.

The house is going to be more interesting. Speaker has to Ryan can find a way to keep the "freedom caucus" from blocking everything for consideration. If he successfully stifles them we see a regular blizzard legislation has not been accomplished in the last seven years. Despite the fact that the Republicans held control the last seven years.

As I said the only big "if" is will the president stay on this path.

The latest forecast on hurricane Irma is devastating. It is projected to run straight up the center of Florida directly up the middle. The east coast will get mostly affected but the entire state, even including Tampa on the west side I
Is looking at unbelievable high winds and rain of historical proportions.

Our commentator commonsense needs to be careful and take care of himself and his family. The revised forecast looks horrific.

I provided my own comments, no copy and paste, a projection of what we will could see in the next three months.

Do us a favor, and instead of personal attacks, write you own projections as you see it. And please don't c/p hotair etc. Otherwise, you are ignoring the request from the host, to avoid personal attacks.

But they're not going to do that. Sad.

Opie lives in Florida?

He said this is threatening the lives of his family, if so, why not go to his cabin?

One more time. The usual suspects are not capable of a thoughtful response.

Have fun diminishing the credibility of our host.

1st off President Trump is a deal maker. If you have not read his book, like I have you should. Making deals that fit his agenda is why I sent him there.

Ha, I told you guys he'd have to/want to work with the Democrats if the loony fringe kept blocking everything. If successful, it may become Trump's preferred strategy.
