Here is a good stat for you...

In 2016 we had:

  • 7105 murders by handguns
  • 1604 murders by knife
  • 656 murders by personal weapon (hand, fist, foot, etc)
  • 472 murders by blunt object (club, bat, hammer, etc)
  • 372 murders by rifle

So is concentrating on automatic rifles really the best way to go about reducing murder and violence?

In every "other" situation that I can imagine, we are told to not make emotional decisions. To make sure our decisions are based on facts, logic, and reason. Yet, when it comes to these sorts of shootings, your gun control crowd will openly advocate using the "emotions" of a mass shooting to push for knee jerk legislative action.

They will tell us that if you wait a few weeks, when the emotions die down, that the very same legislation that might be able to be pushed through when everyone is in an emotional state, will no doubt lose support as people come down to earth.

Perhaps the reasonable assumption here is that if you cannot push the legislation on it's simple merits, then it's probably not good legislation. If you require the aftermath emotions of some national tragedy to pass it, then it probably shouldn't be passed.

U.S.
Trump's Exorbitant Travel Costs Could Pay to Send Puerto Rico 128 Cargo Ships With Aid
Newsweek Chris Riotta,Newsweek 7 hours ago

Donald Trump complained to Puerto Rican hurricane victims this week that their suffering is throwing his budget "out of whack," but for the same cost as the first family's exorbitant travel, the government could have sent nearly 130 cargo ships to the island, a new analysis shows.

The president and first family have reportedly spent an unprecedented $32 million on trips to Mar-a-Lago and other exclusive Trump properties across the country — so much, in fact, that the online document company FormSwift decided to convert the extravagent budget into its equivalent in humanitarian aide.

Estimating the cost of fuel and the length of the trip, the numbers-crunchers discovered that the president's estimated travel bills would equal 128 cargo ship trips from Florida to Puerto Rico. When FormSwift included the entire first family's travels, the amount of aid ships increased to 130.

I was an NRA member for several years. Then instead of training young people in he proper use of guns, I took the course, it was required in South Dakota to get a deer license under 16. I got my first deer at 14. The gutting grossed me out. LOL. But I learned how and could do it right now, because I have my Buck Knife. It's got to be 45 years old. Sharp enough to gut a rat.

Lately it seems that not a week goes by without some revelation about the Trump family’s shadiness, whether it’s meeting with Russian officials about getting dirt on a political opponent or using private email accounts to correspond with White House staff. A new joint report from ProPublica, WNYC, and The New Yorker marries the two, delving into a fraud investigation against Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr., otherwise known as the two of the three kids Donald Trump regularly acknowledges in a public forum.

According to the collaborative report, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office spent two years building a fraud case against Ivanka and Donald Jr., which began looking like it would result in criminal charges in spring 2012. In 2008, the elder Trump siblings knowingly gave false information to prospective buyers after units at Trump SoHo, a hotel-and-condo development, failed to sell at the desired rate. The Trumps fudged the numbers when meeting with potential buyers, telling them that “31 percent of the condos in the building had been purchased.” Trump Jr. bragged in an interview with The Real Deal that 55 percent of the units had been sold; soon thereafter, his sister Ivanka claimed that “60 percent had been snapped up.” “We’re in a very fortunate position,” Ivanka Trump said, “where we have enough sales and now we are strategically targeting certain buyers.”

[Arrested Development narrator voice]: They weren’t. ProPublica et. al. obtained a copy of a sworn affidavit filed in March 2010 with the New York attorney general’s office by a Trump partner that indicated two years after Trump’s daughter bragged about more than half of the units being sold, the real figure was 15.8 percent sold. Some buyers (rightly) felt cheated, and sued the Trump organization in 2010. That legal action was followed by an investigation by the Manhattan DA’s office, whose Major Economic Crimes Bureau determined that Ivanka and Trump Jr. might have violated the Martin Act, “a New York statute that bans any false statement in conjunction with the sale of a security or real estate.”

The investigation uncovered emails exchanged by Ivanka and Donald Jr. with buyers, in which, according to four people who have seen the correspondence, they “discussed how to coordinate false information they had given to prospective buyers.” Not only that, but “according to a person who read the emails, they worried that a reporter might be onto them. In yet another, Donald Jr. spoke reassuringly to a broker who was concerned about the false statements, saying that nobody would ever find out, because only people on the email chain or in the Trump Organization knew about the deception, according to a person who saw the email.”

It's about time conceal/carry permits fall under the full faith and credit clause of the constitution.
Ah, the hell with states rights, correct menstral?????

Funny you should mention that. The full faith and credit clause guarantees the right of states to have their acts recognized as in effect in other states.

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

That's how a gay marriage in Vermont is recognized in Florida.

The federal government doesn't issue concealed-carry permits. States do.

And in the normal course of law each state must honor a concealed-carry permit from another state.

But some states (most notably New York) are balking. So Congress has to step in.

The NRA did not teach me how to gut a deer, my dad did. We also slaughtered hem ourselves. I could do it today, and if I had the proper tools and knives, I could slaughter an elk, moose, and deer. We had a bone saw, for the main bones.

I knew how to shoot before I took the NRA class, but it was required like I said, if you wee under 16. In South Dakota, you could also get a "learners' drivers license if you had a licensed driver, over 18 as a passenger in the car. I was driving at 12, with a "three on the tree" Rambler that my grandfather had.We drove the section roads in the farm area. FYI section roads were roads spaced one mile apart in farm and ranch land.

we required an 8 hour course administered by the NYS dept. of environmental conservation.

it seems odd to me that a state would abdicate their responsibility to a private organization like the NRA.

what the NRA is asking is if the ATF can simply impose or undo the 0linsky-era approval, or if it must be legislation. the slippery slope here is what the ATF CAN do by the stroke of a pen.

every state that has gun laws or regulations on their books have distorted or restricted the second amendment in some way.

personally i'd love to have a conversation with a constitutional law expert about this and how so many state level distortions were allowed to happen and how they could be constitutional.

i suspect it has something to do with the much abused commerce clause.

NRA Supports New Rules on ‘Bump Stock’ Devices

“The National Rifle Association endorsed tighter restrictions on devices that allow a rifle to fire bullets as fast as a machine gun — a rare, if small, step for a group that for years has vehemently opposed any new gun controls,” the New York Times reports.

“Twelve of the rifles the Las Vegas gunman, Stephen Paddock, had in a high-rise hotel suite when he opened fire on a crowd on Sunday were outfitted with ‘bump stocks,’ devices that allow a semiautomatic rifle to fire hundreds of rounds per minute, which may explain how he was able to shoot so quickly, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds of others. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has ruled that bump stocks do not violate laws that tightly limit ownership of machine guns, and some lawmakers have called for them to be banned.”

...the National Rifle Association is calling on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) to immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law," the National Rifle Association said in a Thursday statement. "The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations."

On Wednesday, Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., along with numerous Democratic senators, announced the introduction of a bill to close the loophole and ban devices that enable a semi-automatic weapon to fire fully automatic.

“Automatic weapons have been illegal for more than 30 years, but there’s a loophole in the law that can be exploited to allow killers to fire at rates of between 400 and 800 rounds-per-minute," she said. "The only reason to fire so many rounds so fast is to kill large numbers of people. No one should be able to easily and cheaply modify legal weapons into what are essentially machine guns.”

Republicans on the Hill are also considering taking action against the sale of these weapons attachments.

Fox News has learned that Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., is writing a bipartisan bill to ban bump stocks and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, also opened the door to looking at the issue.

Even the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, opened the door to new restrictions.
"If somebody can essentially convert a semi-automatic weapon by buying one of these and utilizing it and cause the kind of mayhem and mass casualties that we saw in Las Vegas, that's something of obvious concern that we ought to explore," Cornyn told reporters.

Trump Will Decertify Iran Deal

“President Trump plans to announce next week that he will ‘decertify’ the international nuclear deal with Iran, saying it is not in the national interest of the United States and kicking the issue to a reluctant Congress,” the Washington Post reports.

“The move would mark the first step in a process that could eventually result in the resumption of U.S. sanctions against Iran, which would blow up a deal limiting Iran’s nuclear activities that the country reached in 2015 with the U.S. and five other nations.”

Poll Shows Growing Dissatisfaction with Republicans

A new USA Today/Suffolk University poll finds that voters’ assessment of the Republican Party has plummeted to 62% unfavorable/23% favorable, significantly changed from the 55% unfavorable/32% favorable registered in a June poll.

The Democratic Party recorded a 48% unfavorable/37% favorable rating in the most recent poll.

Said pollster David Paleologos: “The Republican Party is in freefall. In March the GOP had a 48% unfavorable rating, in June the negative swelled to 55%. Today the GOP unfavorable is 62%. What’s next?”
