About Roy Moore

So, just a few weeks from an election, you have several women all coming out for the first time to make allegations against a candidate. (where have we seen this before?).

The political response (if you are a Republican officeholder) is to pretty much say that these are horrible allegations and (if true) that Moore should step down. The caveat is to make sure you are not putting yourself into a position where you are seen to think it might be okay for any man to sexually molest (or sexually proposition) underage girls (much less one running for Senate) but giving yourself the "semantic" ability to suggest that you still want some proof before making any sort of real judgement.

Of course, it doesn't help much that Moore is a Bannon guy who defeated the "establishment" choice. So many Republican Senators are not too high on him anyways.

Obviously, Roy Moore has been a prominent figure in Alabama for some time. None of these allegations surfaced while he was a Judge. None of them surfaced while he was running in the primary. They only surfaced after he was running in the general (and close enough to the election where he cannot technically drop out). It certainly would seem "fishy" at best.

I would expect that after a day or two, when the dust settles, the GOP will start to come to grips that they cannot "replace" him on the ballot or even have his name taken off (according to Alabama election law).

The chances of them winning this seat with some sort of "write in" candidate, while Moore's name stays on the ballot would be slim to none. I would assume that a great deal of Moore supporters would check his box, even if he were to take himself out of the running (just for spite). You are going to have some who will check his box because they don't know any better or possibly believe that the vote "transfers" to the other Republican. You also have an inherent problem with write in ballots being tossed on technicalities because they were not properly filled out. When you add it all up, it would probably lower the bar for the Democrat to win from the normal 48-50 percent down to maybe as low as 40-42 percent of the actual vote.

So after the prerequisite period of acting aghast at allegations many people will assume are probably made up... I would expect that people will start to push back a little and demand some sort of evidence or proof. You will probably even see some actual attempts (by the Moore campaign) to suggest that this is a dirty tactic and try to turn it around on the Democrat.

Hard for me to believe people in Alabama would abandon Moore on the word of this women given to a Washington newspaper.

But then again the politics have become strange.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Unless you actually believe that the Washington Post is Fake News, this is hard to believe is false.

was early 1979 and Moore -- now the Republican nominee in Alabama for a U.S. Senate seat - was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney. He struck up a conversation, Corfman and her mother say, and offered to watch the girl while her mother went inside for a child custody hearing.

"He said, 'Oh, you don't want her to go in there and hear all that. I'll stay out here with her,' " says Corfman's mother, Nancy Wells, 71. "I thought, how nice for him to want to take care of my little girl."

Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says. Days later, she says, he picked her up around the corner from her house in Gadsden, drove her about 30 minutes to his home in the woods, told her how pretty she was and kissed her. On a second visit, she says, he took off her shirt and pants and removed his clothes. He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.

"I wanted it over with - I wanted out," she remembers thinking. "Please just get this over with. Whatever this is, just get it over." Corfman says she asked Moore to take her home, and he did.

Two of Corfman's childhood friends say she told them at the time that she was seeing an older man, and one says Corfman identified the man as Moore. Wells says her daughter told her about the encounter more than a decade later, as Moore was becoming more prominent as a local judge.

Aside from Corfman, three other women interviewed by The Washington Post in recent weeks say Moore pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, episodes they say they found flattering at the time, but troubling as they got older. None of the women say that Moore forced them into any sort of relationship or sexual contact.

Wendy Miller says she was 14 and working as a Santa's helper at the Gadsden Mall when Moore first approached her, and 16 when he asked her on dates, which her mother forbade. Debbie Wesson Gibson says she was 17 when Moore spoke to her high school civics class and asked her out on the first of several dates that did not progress beyond kissing.

Gloria Thacker Deason says she was an 18-year-old cheerleader when Moore began taking her on dates that included bottles of Mateus Rose wine. The legal drinking age in Alabama was 19.

Of the four women, the youngest at the time was Corfman, who is the only one who says she had sexual contact with Moore that went beyond kissing. She says they did not have intercourse

Politics don't matter with accusations like this. Clinton was impeached for lying about a blow job. And lying under oath.

Clinton was impeached for both lying under oath, and trying to coerce Lewinsky to lie as well. He lied both in court depositions (civil suit) and lied to federal investigators. He sent White House attorneys to Lewinsky to try to get her to sign a false affidavit.

Scooter Libby was sentenced to prison time for less.

These are "allegations" that just happen to come out a few weeks from an election.

Explain to me why they didn't come out... I don't know... anytime between when they alleged it happened and before now?

C.H. Truth said...

Roger - most everyone believes the Washington Post pushes fake news. They get more wrong than right.

But this isn't about who published it. It's about the common sense reality that the timing of this just doesn't cut it. The ONLY reason for someone to make these allegations is for political purposes.

Seriously... the whole story seems made up. You are sitting outside a courtroom and you let some strange man you never met watch her... and later they drive off together in a car... then later she comes for a "second visit"?

If true... the mother is a complete idiot.

And not all allegations should automatically be assumed to be true. Just ask the Duke lacrosse team.

This isn't a fake news report. FYI, CH blocked me because I would occasionally send him a link to a top story. He actually said that anything from any of the major newspapers, etc. He didn't want to see any Fake News outlet. I lost all respect because he was following the Trump party line. He lost his ability to objectivity, meaning non-partisan, ability to look at anything that was critical of the President, or any other people who happened to be Republicans was incorrect, because he can do no wrong. On top of that, in the last few weeks, any criticism of the President, by Republicans, who made eloquent and accurate evaluations of the behavior of the President, he dismissed it. Because anything that isn't Trumpism, he believes it is wrong.

The election last night was the first wave of the Hurricane Trump, that is going to duplicate the damage in Puerto Rico. Hang on for dear life.

the Facebook friendship deal was simple. Roger would spam me with Facebook messenger messages at all hours of the day (and night). I would sometimes be awaken in bed by my phone going off with a message at 2:00 in the morning, only to go look and see that it was Roger pinging me with a slate.com story...

If I had a dollar for every time I asked him to stop spamming me with political crap, and then another dollar for every time he promised to do so, then another dollar for every time he broke that promise... I might be able to put in a bid for the Trump Towers.

As for the blog situation... almost everyone can remember that I couldn't put up a blog post, without Roger posting something 15 minutes later over the top of it. Never would bother to offer his differing opinion in the comment section. Had to put a blog post (many times bringing up personal issues) as if this blog was about personal disagreements... rather than a blog that actually is visited a few thousand times a week.

I offered Roger his own blog (which he would not share with Rat) and that I would continue to post on the original blog. He refused it.. so I created th new blog just for my own posts... and renamed the old existing blog as the Legacy blog.

I even created the hub page so that people could view blog posts and see what they wanted to read... there was no censorship of Roger's opinions. There was just a separation of main posts.. so that the blog itself did not drift further down the path of looking similar to a comment thread."

Evidence-based, credible articles about abortion from reputable news outlets like The New York Times and The Washington Post didn’t make it to the top of the list of “most shared” articles on Facebook last year, according to BuzzSumo. But articles from the site LifeNews.com did.

LifeNews, which has just under one million followers on Facebook, is one of several large anti-abortion sites that can command hundreds of thousands of views on a single post. These sites produce vast amounts of misinformation; the Facebook page for the organization Live Action, for instance, has two million Facebook followers and posts videos claiming there’s a correlation between abortion and breast cancer. And their stories often generate more engagement than the content produced by mainstream news organizations, said Sharon Kann, the program director for abortion rights and reproductive health at Media Matters, a watchdog group. People on Facebook engage with anti-abortion content more than abortion-rights content at a “disproportionate rate,” she said, which, as a result of the company’s algorithms, means more people see it.

Facebook’s current initiatives to crack down on fake news can, theoretically, be applicable to misinformation on other issues. Yes, Remember when they finally came forward against Harvey Weinstein, nobody was surprise. It was an open secret for years.

That's not the case with Moore, there is no previous pattern of sexual misconduct that dogged his career. If there was, we would have heard about it long before now.

These accusations coming out of the blue at the last minute should raise some suspicion.

The fact that it's all establishment Republicans piling on Moore, with not a word from dems, tells us that this is a political smear to prevent another anti-establishment senator. It is completely undubstantiated, unproven, and impossible for him to prove his innocence.

Here are three quick examples I found of Roger messaging me in the middle of the night.

- The first screen print was a one sided Roger conversation that ended at 5:28 AM

- The second was a classic 3:48 AM attachment (that shows no longer available)

- The third is showing two disjointed messages from 3:03AM and then again at 6:44AM

http://coldheartedtruthblog.blogspot.com/2015/11/

So Roger tells us all that he never messaged me in the middle of the night, and that I am lying, and that he "always" tells the truth. Perhaps I can give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it's some sort of cognitive disorder where he does things (like message people in the middle of the night) and doesn't remember?

everybody and their brother is coming out and accusing someone of sexual assault these days. The only people having anything "happen" to them are the accused (Weinstein is being charged, Spacey had his series cancelled).

Now is the "best time" to come out and make an accusation. People are predisposed right now to believe it, and any sort of retaliation is unthinkable.

James said:
If machine guns being made illegal led to a situation in which very few deaths by machine guns resulted, ...

WP said:
Your "If" is an incorrect assumption. Several incorrect assumptions actually, since machine guns are not currently illegal. You can legally purchase and own pre-1986 automatic weapons, with some restrictions.

JAMES SAID:
MAJOR restrictions, WP. MAJOR restrictions. Restrictions that make it almost impossible for an ordinary citizen legally to own one, and the restrictions in some states are even tougher than in others. Also, the large expense is prohibitive.
____________________

Wp said:
Machine guns are designed for military use; infantry are trained with them. For civilians they are not as effective for self-defense, pointless actually. They are difficult to use with any accuracy and burn through your ammo. The only advantage is that you can spray a lot of bullets, quickly, over a large area. That should be obvious, and that is not a legitimate objective for an individual defending himself or his property.

You need to come to grips with the fact, James, that the purpose of a self-defense firearm is to shoot someone. You can have fun at the range, you can use a hunting rifle for self-defense, you can keep a collection, but the ultimate purpose is shooting someone. You don't like it, neither do I, but trying to ban guns because they might be used to shoot people (which is your boiled down argument here) is a non-starter. That's what they're for, that's why there is a constitutional right, and that's why people have them. Your arguments can only be accepted by those who already agree with you.
_______________

James says:
You, Wp, need to come to grips with the fact that machine guns were designed to shoot people, including those of the Tommy gun variety (easily hand held) which were used to shoot lots of people by, e. g., Chicago gangsters before they were banned. Since they became illegal even to possess, few people (almost none) have been killed by them.

Semi-automatic weapons should have been subjected to the same restriction.
Lives might have been saved in that Texas church.

But you will defend the right to own such a weapon, even in the face of the Texas church carnage, including that poor mother who tried to cover her four children with her own body and was killed along with two of her daughters while her little son was shot five times but is still hanging on to life.

Also in the face of the little Sandy Hook school girl who said, "Mama, I'm okay, but all my friends are dead."

1) It would create the most possible attention. In this case, she knows full well it would create national attention.
2) It would be done at a time where many people would accuse her of pulling a political stunt.

If this was something she wanted to do in a manner that did not have her "picture and name plastered all over the media" then she had years and years and years to make the allegations under a lower profile. She had fifteen years from the time of the alleged events to go to the police and have him criminally charged.

C.H. Truth said...

Well, why not?

because it fits a recent pattern of allegations against prominent GOP candidates all taking place within a month or so of an election.

This inherently causes a situation where assuming her allegations are true... she diminishes them by allowing people to accuse her of grandstanding for political purposes or even just making them up to alter an election.

Roy Moore is not a man I would necessarily vote for in the first place. He obviously is an old school southerner with what many would think of as "bigoted" views on a lot of stuff. He certainly doesn't do a very good job hiding those views, and he doesn't particularly seem like the sort of guy you want living next door to you.

I believe that her allegations are plausible, if not probable. But I know there are going to be a lot of people (especially his supporters) who are going to be predisposed to not believe her.

In the grand scheme of things... these sorts of allegations deserve to be taken completely seriously WITHOUT the political ramifications that are in play. It's literally (at this point) impossible to separate the allegations from the politics. They now run hand in hand... and because of that, her allegations have been forever cheapened.

Do it when he first stepped up to run, when it was possible to not have him on the ballot. Or do it after the election when even if he were to win, he could be technically kicked out of the Senate (and replaced by the Governor).

But doing it now, James... simply puts the actual allegations almost secondary to many people. The fact that you "approve" of her doing it now (or even think it was the right thing to do) should show YOU that her allegations are less important to you than the actual election results. You care "more" about stopping Moore from being elected than you do about the girl.

Moreover, if he wins (and he still certainly can)... it lessens those allegations even further. Likely "because" people are less inclined to believe them because of the timing. Now it actually harms the next person trying to make a allegation of sexual abuse against a politician.

Understand?

You didn't read what you're replying to. "Few people, (almost none)" have been killed by them AT ALL - one between 1934 and the time they became restricted.

To imply that restricting them has reduced deaths is to try to deceive people. All you achieve with that is make people distrust you.

Hey CH....that young lady in question is now receiving death threats from people like you.....I guess that just may be the reason she has more guts than any of your brethren here...How sad!!!! Wasn't there a little matter called the St. Valentine's Day massacre?

So let's see. Tens of millions of liberals last year voted to put a couple in the White House, one of whom paid large settlements for sexual harassment incidents, had a long history of related charges including rape, and his spouse had attacked the victims.

Now no history, no collaboration, supposedly 40 years ago, denied by the accused and they expect people to blow up an election. Smells like Anita Hill all over again.

Democrats are turning into the party of evil.

I remember that. My memory is intact with the exception of remembering the names of people I meet. It's bugged me my entire life.

Just yesterday you suggested that you never sent me messages in the middle of the night or spammed me with links. Then you demanded that I was lying for saying so, and that you never lied.

Or did you forget from yesterday?

Hey CH....that young lady in question is now receiving death threats

Another reason she should have made the allegations at a less politically charged time. She put her own personal safety at risk... along with all the other issues the timing created.

Women by the millions are claiming to be sexually assaulted? Really? By the millions??

I guess you're including muslim countries?

Wp, there are times when you really come across as stupid. It was my precise point that SINCE machine guns became illegal, there have been very few deaths by them (more than one, but not many).

It was in reaction to the deadliness of the "Tommy gun" (Thompson submachine gun) that the ban on machine guns was passed.

WIKI: The Thompson achieved most of its early notoriety in the hands of Prohibition and Depression-era gangsters, motorized bandits and the lawmen who pursued them, and in Hollywood films about their exploits, most notably in the St Valentine's Day Massacre. The two Thompson guns used in the massacre, called "the most famous murder weapons in the world", are still held by the Berrien County Sheriff's Department. It has been referred to by one researcher as the "gun that made the twenties roar".

The perceived popularity of submachine guns such as the Thompson with violent gangsters in the 1920s and 1930s was one of the main reasons given for passage of the National Firearms Act by the United States Congress in 1934. One of its provisions was that owners of fully automatic firearms were required to register them with the predecessor agency of the modern Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The law also placed restrictions on the possession, transfer, and transport of the weapons.
____________________
Those restrictions, including the fact that merely having illegal possession of one results in significant prison time, made machine guns and machine gun deaths very, very rare.

James - not following this argument too terribly closely. But it would appear as if a portion of this debate is that:

you are arguing that machine guns were outlawed because of all the deadly shootings, while WP is arguing that the deadly shootings from machine gun use was overstated.

You do understand... that offering that there was a "perception" (somewhat fueled by movies and television) that machine guns were the main gun used by gangsters and therefor led to laws regarding tommy guns... doesn't really help your argument in this case.

wphamilton said...

WP is arguing that the deadly shootings from machine gun use was overstated.

CH, not only overstated but completely fabricated. Since 1934 there has been precisely one machine gun killing by a civilian (and two by cops). Therefore, at the very most, only ONE death might have been avoided.

Incidentally James, the Valentine's Day massacre was in 1929 - I don't know why that amuses you, but different strokes I guess.

I'd take it a step further and elaborate exactly why there have been so few machine gun killings, but it would be kind of pointless when the basic fact isn't even acknowledged. I've said already that semi-auto rifles are effective self defense weapons, while automatic rifles are pointless for self-defense. Two different animals, which are not really comparable for 2nd Amendment purposes.

And the idiot wants to ban all semiautos which is pretty much all hand guns.

He's a moron that is talking about a subject of which he knows nothing. Which is frequent
