At least someone asked instead of making assumptions. Although you also posed the false choice between diplomatic noise and shooting war/nukes.
I've elaborated on what I suggest a couple of times already, but let me summarize. I would escalate physical measures, calling the bluff. If you believe that NK has a credible nuclear deterrence, ours is a thousand times stronger and, in fact, our nuclear power deters even conventional war a thousand times more than KN's nukes would deter us. There is no parity, no "equivalence" as Pyongyang's domestic propaganda puts it - it's such a mismatch that the nuclear component of NK's immediate threat, right now, is a minor factor.
Consequently I would physically embargo all shipping to and from North Korea. I would physically prevent any movement of military assets outside of the country. Any counter-measure would be met with escalation, but a measured response. The purpose is two-fold: first to enhance the effect of sanctions. Second, to establish proportionate escalation while "slowly boiling the frog", making it dead certain that any military response meets with real retaliation. He will know that he loses more than he can hope to gain from any individual action. He won't go very far down that road.
Regarding cross-border trade with China I also have a gradated plan which I won't go into now, except that elimination of strategic crossing points is somewhere in the middle. The result, fairly quickly I think, is to truly isolate the regime from any international transactions.
Finally, there would be no more ballistic missile tests, nor nuclear tests, in any case where analysts determined that one was more likely than not being prepared. I would strike those sites, ruthlessly. If one did slip through, I would strike those sites AND whatever infrastructure supported the test. In my plan Pyongyang is going to know, with absolute certainty and not Trump bullshitting, that it's going to happen and they're not going to start shelling Seoul or shooting missiles at Japan because that would only make it worse.
Obviously there is a serious risk with any large-scale military action, but this would most likely never get that far. The whole scenario is a nightmare for China, and while it will cost us in bilateral relations, China will wind up doing applying the full pressure they are capable of, to make it stop.
It's all a pipe dream because Trump doesn't have the spine to even begin this.

The keys to avoiding a devastating war on the peninsula are strength and courage. If China can get away with symbolic measures, as they have in the past, then that's all they will do. We cannot rely on China to resolve the situation. We cannot rely on China to use any leverage at all with NK.
China is fine with the Pyongyang regime in North Korea, preventing any unification which they view as an encroachment of US influence. North Korea is their strategic asset, the potential chaos an ever-present counterbalance to any projection of force in the region. The existence of this regime requires an asymmetric allocation of Western resources and of our allies in the region, which acts as a multiplier for Chinese force. China has every incentive to keep Pyongyang propped up and belligerent.
If you want any help from China, you'll have to make it cost them more to allow the status quo than they gain with it. Considering the strategic advantages, that cost will have to be very high. If we don't have the fortitude for that, then we must realize that we're going it alone against North Korea, and that means that a day of reckoning is inevitable. We must take action now rather than passively awaiting, because the longer we delay the greater the consequences.
I don't think it's in China's interest for their puppet to have nuclear weapons.
