Two new polls show Moore back up?

Two new polls, one by Atlantic Media and Research and the other by Sky Research show Roy Moore back up. Both polls show Moore up by seven points.  The AMR poll showed different demographic scenarios and determined that Moore was still up by three points under his "worst case scenario" of heavy minority and young voters.

These polls have been criticized by Huffington Post and others for being fairly obscure pollsters as well as "right leaning". Not sure how you can declare both to be true. If they really are that obscure then we have no historical means to determine their particular leaning. If we can declare them historically to be "right leaning" then they cannot really be that obscure. I would agree that neither is exactly Gallup, but they seem to be in line with other very recent polling showing Moore recovering from the allegations. The difference is that these polls they are showing Moore "opening up" a bigger lead. Until more polling comes out, we will not know if these are outliers or part of a trend.

You are starting to see more mainstream conservatives warming back to Moore with logic sort of like this:

  1. Apparently Moore has done nothing wrong in the last 40 years. If he had, we would have heard about it. And if he has been pure for 40 years, or close to that time, he will be the most upright man in Washington, D.C. It wasn’t much more than 40 years ago when Ted Kennedy drowned Mary Jo Kopechne, and it was just under 40 years ago when Bill Clinton allegedly raped Juanita Broaddrick. If those offenses can be forgiven, Roy Moore’s (weakly) alleged offenses should be forgiven, too–especially since, unlike Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton, he seems to have done nothing reprehensible in the decades that have gone by since.
  2.  His opponent is a Democrat. ‘Nuff said–President Trump was right about this. The Democrats are doing everything they can to block the Republican agenda in the Senate, and giving them another seat would only empower the flakes like John McCain and Susan Collins who seek to mold every vote toward their own eccentric visions. Let’s not weaken the GOP in the Senate any further. The Republic hangs in the balance.
www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2017/11/roy-moore-for-senate-2.php
With still over two weeks to go, I suspect that the allegations will lose influence over many conservative and/or Republican voters. Especially considering the feckless reaction from Democratic Leaders as it pertains to Al Franken and John Conyers and their allegations. Had the Democrats called for (and received) the immediate resignations from both, these allegations against Moore would be harder to ignore. As it stands, apparently allegations (and proven examples) of sexual abuse is NOT disqualifying from serving in Congress. That's good news for Moore.

Opie...

If elected, Moore will be seen no differently than Franken and Conyers...

Only all of allegations against Moore happened forty years ago, Franken and Conyers have apparently been abusing women while serving in Congress.

The left attempting to play it differently will run into the same issues of hypocrisy that have plagued them, and made it impossible to take them seriously on many of these "ethical" issues.

Hint: Pretending in 2017 that Bill Clinton should have resigned twenty years ago, and then standing by your current Democratic sexual abusers... proves that Democrats like to "talk" a good game, but fail to follow through.

“The lawyer for President Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn met Monday morning with members of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, the latest indication that both sides are discussing a possible plea deal,” ABC News reports.

“That process would typically include a series of off-the-record discussions in which prosecutors lay out in detail for Flynn and his lawyers the fruits of their investigation into his activities. Prosecutors would also provide Flynn an opportunity to offer what’s called a ‘proffer,’ detailing what information, if any, he has that could implicate others in wrongdoing.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court, which has avoided major gun cases for seven years, on Monday declined to hear a challenge backed by the National Rifle Association to Maryland's 2013 state ban on assault weapons enacted after a Connecticut school massacre.

The court turned away an appeal by several Maryland residents, firearms dealers and the state NRA association, who argued that the ban violated their right to keep and bear arms under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.

....The challengers, who had sued Maryland's governor and other officials in 2013, appealed a February ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia that upheld the state's law. The 4th Circuit, ruling 10-4, said it had no power to extend constitutional protections to "weapons of war."
_____________

So the Supreme Court is refusing to extend constitutional protections to "weapons of war" such as machine guns, flame throwers, bazookas, grenade launchers, surface to air missile launchers, mortars, and rapid-fire semi automatic rifles that can be altered to make them fire even more rapidly.

............And it's certainly of a piece with President Obama's failure to take any action on Russian electoral meddling so long as he was convinced Hillary Clinton was winning the race.

It just goes to show an emerging picture of Comey as an incompetent in addition to a partisan whose sympathies slant left.

Besides ignoring the hacking attempts, he also turned out all along to be wiretapping Trump Tower, looking for evidence of Russian collusion, even though he said he wasn't.

He pre-wrote his letter exonerating Hillary Clinton for running an illegal private server hosting sensitive State Department communications in some guy's bathroom – wrote it before the investigation was even finished.

He admitted he had handed information memos to a Columbia University buddy expressly for the purpose of leaking them to the press.

Now it turns out he was about as concerned as Obama about Russian hacking attempts in the days when Hillary was winning.

Was this guy really about guarding and protecting America's secrets? Or was he just a bumbling partisan hack? That $10 million he reportedly got as a book advance is starting to look less and less like a smart investment that will sell books and advance Comey's stature. Right now, Comey's legacy is falling apart

Trump Derangement Syndrome's little brother is on its way

My schadenfreude knows no bounds this morning. I am looking forward to progressives already driven into sputtering, mouth-foaming, career-ending rage by Trump Derangement Syndrome to compound their misery, as their most troublesome pre-Trump demons return to haunt them, amplified a hundredfold by the news I just read.

Reuters reports:

U.S. media group Meredith has reached a deal to acquire Time, the U.S. publisher of Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazines, the company said Sunday evening.

Meredith said it had entered a binding agreement to acquire all outstanding shares of Time for $18.50 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at $2.8 billion. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of calendar 2018, the company said.

So what? Just follow the money:

Meredith's bid for Time is backed by an affiliate of billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch.

Koch Industries has been backing Meredith's bid with $600 million in financing, sources previously told Reuters.

That's right: the Koch Brothers! You remember them, right? If not, here is a minute and forty-eight seconds of Harry Reid of invoking them with the same sort of voice Cotton Mather used for Satan.

The Supreme Court Doesn’t Have Any Good News For Westboro Baptist

A court case out of Nebraska was challenging a law regarding restrictions on protests which interrupt funerals. It takes little imagination to guess that this was aimed directly at Westboro Baptist Church. The church had challenged the law on constitutional grounds but lost their bid in the lower courts. Rather than taking up the task yet again, the Supreme Court declined to hear it and allowed the lower court ruling to stand, keeping the law in place. (Fox News)

Roy Moore compares accusations against him to Russia probe

(CNN) - Senate candidate Roy Moore said at a campaign event Monday that the sexual allegations he faces are "completely false" and "malicious," and said he doesn't know any of the women levying them.
The Alabama Republican compared the allegations to the probe into 2016 Russian meddling in the US election and potential connections between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russians.
"The people of this country want movement. They don't want false attacks like this. That's exactly what's happening in this case," Moore said. "They want to hide the true issues of immigration and health care, military readiness, taxes, abortion and transgender rights. They also not only want to hide the issues, they don't want my opponent's issues revealed; how he stands on these issues. I'll tell you how he stands: completely contrary to the people of this state and this country."
Several women have come forward and accused Moore of pursuing relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s, and several others also have accused him of assault.
On Monday, Moore cast the allegations as "malicious, false attacks, which reflect the immorality of our time." He compared the Washington establishment's opposition to him to former President Barack Obama's remarks about those who cling to guns and religion.
"There is an established group in Washington that does not want to change. They want people who will follow along like they've been doing and not basically pass President Trump's agenda," Moore said.
Moore said he has represented women who have levied similar allegations before. "I have not seen one who wants her picture posted on national TV, especially in a political advertisement," he said.
"The truth is, this is not really odd at all. This is simply dirty politics. And it's a sign of the immorality -- it's a sign of the immorality of our time," Moore said. "This is just a sign of the times in which we live. Politicians will stop at nothing to win an election."
Moore said he's faced "numerous investigations" over decades and noted that the allegations never previously surfaced.
"I want to tell you first, this hurts me personally. Because besides my wife, my mother and my only daughter, we have five granddaughters. And it hurts to think people would attack your character like that after 40 years. And it's a little odd ... that after 40 years of service to this state and this community, and 50 years if you count my military service, never once has this been alleged," he said.

Democratic Leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi pulled out of a planned meeting with President Trump at the White House this afternoon after the president tweeted that he doesn't "see a deal" to be reached with the Democratic leaders on government funding — raising the specter for a potential government shutdown in December.

“Given that the President doesn’t see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead," Schumer and Pelosi said in a joint statement. "Rather than going to the White House for a show meeting that won’t result in an agreement, we’ve asked Leader McConnell and Speaker Ryan to meet this afternoon. We don’t have any time to waste in addressing the issues that confront us, so we’re going to continue to negotiate with Republican leaders who may be interested in reaching a bipartisan agreement."

Earlier in the day, the president expressed pessimism about the prospects for a deal on Twitter.

Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) has regained a slight lead against Democrat Doug Jones in the first post-Thanksgiving poll, a sign that while the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct have bruised his campaign he’s not done yet.

i just did. and the guy looking back at me has the same liver he was born with.

I had an inherited liver disease. My doctors said that the alcoholic consumption had little or no impact on the extreme condition.

My daughter has early signs of the disease too. She is not a heavy drinker.

I wouldn't get too excited about that Change Research poll, nor the earlier Strategy Research poll that had Moore with a slight lead.

It all comes down to how many Alabama Republicans care more about voting R than voting a probable child molester, and who can say at this point? Certainly no poll will capture that. I expect that most people voting for Moore are going to rationalize it, contending there is room for doubt or willfully suspending their credulity, but in the end it will come down to their values and I don't think that a poll can winnow that out.

It's a toss-up. The other side of that coin is that the same sentiment that rejected the Trump-endorsed opponent could work now against Moore given at least the pretext of this issue, and those voters may also be reticent about admitting that they're leaning D on this one.

The reason most liberals are totally clueless about the Alabama electorate is that they view abortion as merely a political issue and they never understood how morally offensive and evil abortion is to this electoral.

They are choosing between a "probable" child molester to a supporter of definite child killers.

Which way to you do think they would choose as the lessor of two evils?

You are a joke.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Ten possible heroes.

Maine’s Susan Collins has criticized the legislation for including a repeal of the individual mandate for purchasing health insurance, arguing that Republicans should leave health care out of this bill. She has also suggested that the bill cuts taxes on corporations too deeply and should instead put more money toward tax reductions for individuals. Also, Collins is the Senate Republican who most often votes against legislation backed by Trump and Senate GOP leadership, according to FiveThirtyEight’s Trump Score. Kansas’s Jerry Moran has also criticized the inclusion of the individual mandate.

Tennessee’s Bob Corker and Arizona’s Jeff Flake and John McCain have expressed concerns about the deficit growing under this legislation. (The Senate bill is currently estimated to increase the deficit by $1.4 trillion over the next 10 years.) Corker has gone the furthest of the three, saying that if “we are adding one penny to the deficit, I’m not going to be for it.”

The three men face no political pressure to back this legislation. Corker and Flake are not seeking re-election next year, while McCain’s brain cancer diagnosis means he is unlikely to run for another term in 2022. All of them have questioned Trump’s judgment, and Trump has returned the favor by attacking them in deeply personal terms. This trio can weaken a president they disdain by blocking the tax proposal he strongly supports and leaving him without a major legislative achievement in his first year.

Oklahoma’s James Lankford and Indiana’s Todd Young have said they, too, are worried that the Republican tax proposals increase the deficit too much — but they face some political pressure to get behind this bill. Unlike Corker, Flake and McCain, they are likely to seek re-election and are in states where Trump won overwhelmingly in 2016.

Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson says the legislation’s tax cuts unfairly favor large corporations over smaller businesses. Montana’s Steve Daines has similar concerns.

Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski actually defended the repeal of the health insurance mandate in an op-ed she wrote in an Alaska newspaper last week. But she remains a wild card. She, like Collins, is a regular dissenter from Trump and Senate leadership. And both of them, along with McCain, showed that they are willing to kill major GOP initiatives when they voted against Obamacare reform this summer.

With that many members wary of the legislation, there are two general paths this process can take. One path is that Senate Republican leaders and Trump, making the case for party unity, persuade the Senate GOP to get its bill passed as soon as possible, resolve any differences with the House quickly and send final legislation to Trump’s desk before Christmas.

Abortion/pro Life is just a wedge issue that doesn't really impact the elections. It's a good one to get people riled up, but Republicans in Alabama are about 60-65% "pro life". Just a red herring that has no relationship to the accusations against Moore.

But if it makes you think Moore's got this in the bag because he's pro-life, then don't let me throw a wet blanket on your warm fuzzies. Just because he's a hypocrite about child molesters and sex crimes, doesn't mean he wouldn't likely have an illicit girlfriend having an underage abortion ... oh wait, maybe it does ...

To ignore the actual reality on the ground just to maintain your prejudice view is just willful ignorance.

There's no point in continuing because there's nothing left to say.

wphamilton said...

Actual reality is that Abortion is practically a non-partisan issue nationwide! About 65-35 in each party, a little higher with the Democrats, with the sides reversed. It's as divisive within the parties as much as between them.

If you want the true "reality on the ground", abortion is never a central issue unless it's needed as a circus to distract you from the real issues. Neither party, ever, is going to stray so far from the center on abortion as to alienate a significant portion of their own constituency. At the same time, the radical wings of either party are precisely the ones who are more extreme with the abortion issue - and they (you) don't matter if you're disturbed about the abortion stance because you're already voting against the other party, no matter what.

Only a the extremist rogue politician types use abortion as a central platform plank, and it almost always backfires on them. Those are the real "facts on the ground".

We're not talking nationwide, we are talking about the state of Alabama.

And were are talking about evangelical voters who take abortion seriously as a moral issue.

wphamilton said...

In Alabama, shift the Abortion/Life numbers by 5% and it all still applies. It's still just a circus issue especially since BOTH candidates hold the extreme position in this case. The extremists on either side are incensed and won't comprehend how anyone could vote for the other guy, but this election won't be about who can garner more extremist votes. Moore probably hopes so, but I don't see how there is any movement that isn't in the moderate segments and that bunch on either side, even in Alabama, is more split on that issue and usually are not single-issue voters. It's just a sideshow.

stupid question, alky.

on the one hand...we have hearsay, and not conclusive evidence that moore is a pedophile.

while on the other hand we have conclusive, documented evidence as well as confessions that numerous preening liberal asshats are rapists, sexual predators, sexual abusers, or garden variety grab-ass perverts.

so there's the answer to your question alky, you drunken sot.

JMC Analytics:

Moore 48%, Jones 43%, Write-ins 4% (5% undecided)
Moore 49%, Jones 44%, Write-ins 5% (2% undecided – leaners included)
Generic Republican preferred 49-46% (5% undecided)

There are three main takeaways: (1) Roy Moore has regained his lead in the polls; (2) Republicans have similarly regained the lead in the generic ballot test, and (3) allegations of sexual misconduct against Roy Moore have not materially impacted the race.

So how many polls will it take for WP to pay attention?

BTW it's not up to Roger CH or anybody outside of Alabama to make the decision for their senator.

It's in the hands of Alabama voters only.

GW has nothing to do with hurricane frequency, but it sure looks like damage can be linked...just saying

Watson and Johnson looked back at all Atlantic hurricane seasons since 1871, and ran detailed storm surge, wind, and inland fresh water flooding models to determine what damages each storm would have caused had that occurred in 2017. For example, the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926, a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds that made a direct hit on Miami, was modeled to have caused $47 billion in damage were it to hit today. Summing up all of the damages for each year, the season that came in second place behind 2017 for highest U.S. damages turned out to be 1893, a hyperactive year that featured three major hurricanes that made landfall in the U.S. (plus a fourth in Puerto Rico, which was not yet a U.S. territory at the time). The year 2005 came in third place. The list of the top ten most destructive hurricane seasons since 1871, were they to occur in 2017, looked like this:

They don't have you and that's a blessing.

Yep, but you sure fit in just perfectly

wphamilton said...

So how many polls will it take for WP to pay attention?

Eh? That's unfolding as I predicted. I told CH from my first post that the allegations probably wouldn't ultimately change Moore's support very much.

And by the way, pay attention to "Question 8" from those polls.

"Given the allegations that have come out about Roy Moore’s alleged sexual misconduct against several underage women, are you more or less likely to support him as a result of these allegations?"

29% said that the allegations made them more likely to vote for Moore. It is safe to say that most of those 29% don't believe the allegations, so they are claiming that the fact of allegations themselves, having nothing to do with Moore himself (in their opinion) increase their regard for Moore. It illustrates what I expressed earlier, that people will tailor their reasons after the fact, convincing themselves that an accusation must be false because it would conflict with a decision already made. There is no other rational reason why an allegation of misconduct increases your support (unless you support the misconduct itself).

Is that not consistent with everything I have to date written on this subject?
