So now what?

In this sweeping legislation the GOP and the President can claim that they:
  • Simplified the tax code
  • Lowered taxes
  • Repealed the Obamacare Individual mandate
After the failure of congress to either pass a clean Obamacare repeal or an Obamacare repeal and replace bill, it's a major accomplishment that came just in time to feel like 2018 was somewhat of a success. One only has to think about how things would be if the GOP had fallen short on this bill, to see the importance of it passing.

Politically, it finally looks like those who voted for Donald Trump, have something to show for it. While the President has been busy lifting regulations, undoing Obama executive rules, and getting conservative Justices confirmed in important places, Trump and the GOP were missing a major piece of legislation.

Now they have it.

The question is, what comes next?  Do they revisit Obamacare? Do they move on to infrastructure? Do they try to put together a comprehensive immigration overhaul?  Feels like they should push something forward in the near future, now that they have some momentum.

not at all, alky.

you see, skeets and the democrats set a very significant precedent with 0linsky-care.

the democrats determined that it was more important to place party before country.

that it was more important to seize one-sixth of the american economy.

that it was more important to take over the system that deals with the health and well-being of every person in the nation.

that it was more important to reject every single GOP idea, proposal, and amendment offered.

that it was more important to pass 0linsky-care in the dark of night on christmas eve using cheap parlor tricks.

that it was more important to hire a jerk from MIT - jonathan gruber - who proceeded to insult the intellect of every american as he produced and peddled the pile of shit.

that it was more important to defeat the GOP and rub their noses in it than it was to pass meaningful and workable legislation.

It was unprecedented that a major overhaul of the health care system and new entitlements were created without any bipartisan efforts. The fact that it was done through reconciliation, in spite of the fact that it didn't quality as something to be passed through reconciliation added salt to the wound.

I would compare this current tax bill to the 2009 Stimulus package (which passed with almost no Republican support)... I only took issue with the Stimulus package because it was doomed to fail (which it did). But I understood that Democrats like "stimulus spending" while Republicans like "Tax cuts" - so when Democrats take charge, they spend money, when Republicans take charge, they lower taxes.

To act as if Republicans passing legislation that lowers taxes is paramount to Obamacare is sort of silly, Roger.

Now perhaps it's different for others who are employees who garner the bulk of their earnings from a W2... but for me, the most complicated part of filing my taxes has always been going through my itemized deductions. Making sure I have receipts for donations, make sure I keep track of this or that. Wondering if something I am doing will trigger an audit.

It seems logical that it will be much easier to just check the standardized deduction box and take the $18,000.

wphamilton said...

So you speak for "everyone else" huh?

No, I should have said "most" qualified opinions, including every proposal, or analysis, that I've ever read on the subject of simplified tax code. But you're right, not "everyone".

wphamilton said...

But not one cent more, for rich people. Cutting corporate taxes to 21% instead of 22%, that was not a case of "only 1%, too bad" was it?

I'm usually pretty laid back, but I have to call you out on this. It's only a case of "only 2%, too bad" when it's the working middle class. Us little people have no right to advocate for lower taxes. Take what your given and shut up. Hypocritical philosophy.

C.H. Truth said...

I will ask you the same question you asked me. Couldn't it be both?

Couldn't there be benefit felt by all workers, if more corporate investment created more job opportunities, and more profits to spread around? The lower the unemployment rate goes, the more pressure it puts on wages to increase (as we are nearing full employment).

and then... on top of that, you see an additional 2% increase in take home pay.

Rather than think of it (as liberals aways do) in terms of class warfare, us vs them, identity politics, etc... you might consider that as the company you work for does better, so will you?

this is a classic glass half full/half empty scenario. what you describe - basically a force multiplier across the economy if employment goes to 'full', we see 4% GDP, and the economy really starts to heat up - is a distinct possibility. as is a bit of inflation.

what always scares the shit out of the left in times like these is how many folks who are either partially or fully dependent upon government to survive can break those bonds.

if you're not reliant upon government for survival you have no good reason to support liberal policies. other than guilt, that is.

wphamilton said...

I will ask you the same question you asked me. Couldn't it be both?

Sure, but it's a very little of one and a whole lot of the other. I'm assuming that you're talking about the 2% worker's tax break and cutting in half the corporate rate. Are you on board with the "shut up and take what you're offered" camp about wage-earners concerned with their own tax rate, honest answer?

I know that mine has a time limit, because this bill's drafters expect it to build up a deficit, and they're going to want us to cover it. So even the 2% is short term and will be balanced later with a hike. But it's short-sighted to begin with, because if you're considering it an investment to stimulate the economy, you'd put it where it does the most good. It's no more than an ideological hope that a reduction of a piece of that 2.2% of the GDP will even result in a net gain for the citizens.

Simplify the code and reduce for small business, working people, and they will invest, save, and inject that money directly into the economy. Mostly immediately, and as history has shown, to greater impact than the dubious trickle-down policy.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Speaking of Obama Care that is (collapsing). The Fake New York Times reported that well...

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration said Thursday that 8.8 million people had signed up for health insurance through the federal marketplace, only slightly lower than last year’s numbers when the open enrollment period was twice as long and heavily advertised.

The numbers essentially defied President Trump’s assertion that “Obamacare is imploding” and could re-energize the efforts by both parties for and against President Barack Obama’s signature domestic achievement.

Seema Verma, the administrator of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, reported the total in a Twitter post. She said her agency had done a great job to “make this the smoothest experience for consumers to date.”

In the last open enrollment period, which was twice as long, 9.2 million people selected health plans through the federal marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act.

Trump is apparently guilty of Obstruction of justice..

ite House turned over records this fall to special counsel Robert Mueller revealing that in the very first days of the Trump presidency, Don McGahn researched federal law dealing both with lying to federal investigators and with violations of the Logan Act, a centuries-old federal law that prohibits private citizens from negotiating with foreign governments, according to three people with direct knowledge of the confidential government documents.

The records reflected concerns that McGahn, the White House counsel, had that Michael Flynn, then the president’s national security advisor, had possibly violated either one or both laws at the time, according to two of the sources. The disclosure that these records exist and that they are in the possession of the special counsel could bolster any potential obstruction of justice case against President Donald Trump.

The records that McGahn turned over to the special counsel, portions of which were read to this reporter, indicate he researched both statutes and warned Trump about Flynn’s possible violations.

McGahn conducted the analysis shortly after learning that Flynn, on Dec. 29, 2016 — while Barack Obama was still president — had counseled the Russian ambassador to the United States at the time, Sergey Kislyak, not to retaliate against U.S. economic sanctions imposed against Russia by the outgoing administration.

McGahn believed that Flynn, and possibly anyone who authorized or approved of such contacts, would be in potential violation of the Logan Act, according to two of the sources, both of whom work in the administration.

The White House and the special counsel’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Despite McGahn’s concerns that Flynn violated one or both of these laws, Trump allowed Flynn to continue in his job and only fired him after the Washington Post reported that Flynn had lied to Vice President Mike Pence and other senior administration officials about his contacts with Kislyak. That was 18 days after then-Acting Attorney General Sally Yates informed McGahn of her own concerns about Flynn’s covert diplomacy with Russia prior to Trump taking office.

The Wall Street Journal reported

Late modifications to reconcile conflicting House and Senate provisions—and lobbying by companies and industries—resolved some key uncertainties in the legislation, and offered a few surprises as well.

Among the provisions that made business leaders happiest was one that went missing in the final bill: the corporate alternative minimum tax. Its survival in the Senate bill provoked widespread consternation, as business groups worried that it would undercut a variety of tax incentives, including one fostering research and development.

Also welcome: the 21% corporate tax rate, despite being a percentage-point higher than either the House or Senate bill proposed. “That’s a home run, there’s no other way to look at it,” Mr. Bradley said.

U.S. Businesses Find Welcome Surprises in Tax Bill
The rate takes effect on Jan. 1, a year sooner than proposed in the Senate bill. That promises firms an extra year of lower tax and avoids a delay that worried many tax experts.

“The level of gaming that would have occurred if you would have had a 35% rate in 2018 and a 21% rate in 2019, it would have been truly amazing,” said Steven Rosenthal, senior fellow at the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center think tank.

The final bill ratcheted up a one-time tax on accumulated foreign profits, or what is often called a repatriation tax. It is now 15.5% on liquid assets, such as cash and cash-equivalents, and 8% on illiquid assets, including factories and equipment, paid over eight years. That is up from 14% and 7% in the House bill, and well above the 8.75% and 3.5% originally proposed by Republican leaders.

Under existing tax law, companies have been taxed at the full 35% statutory corporate rate for foreign profits brought to the U.S., beyond what was paid to foreign tax authorities. Foreign profits indefinitely reinvested outside the U.S. went untaxed—leading S&P 500 companies to accumulate some $2.5 trillion in unremitted foreign earnings.

The one-time tax is meant to serve as a transition from the old “world-wide” system to a new “territorial” one in which foreign profits will generally not be taxed at all, with exceptions intended to discourage abuse of foreign tax havens. Its novelty and complexity is likely to foster further lobbying and potentially litigation.

So Roger tells us all that he never messaged me in the middle of the night, and that I am lying, and that he "always" tells the truth. "Roger continues to act as if my decision to drop him as a Facebook friend and create a new blog to separate my posts from him are over political disagreements...

the Facebook friendship deal was simple. Roger would spam me with Facebook messenger messages at all hours of the day (and night). I would sometimes be awaken in bed by my phone going off with a message at 2:00 in the morning, only to go look and see that it was Roger pinging me with a "slate.com" story...

If I had a dollar for every time I asked him to stop spamming me with political crap, and then another dollar for every time he promised to do so, then another dollar for every time he broke that promise... I might be able to put in a bid for the Trump Towers.

As for the blog situation... almost everyone can remember that I couldn't put up a blog post, without Roger posting something 15 minutes later over the top of it. Never would bother to offer his differing opinion in the comment section. Had to put a blog post (many times bringing up personal issues) as if this blog was about personal disagreements... rather than a blog that actually is visited a few thousand times a week.

I offered Roger his own blog (which he would not share with Rat) and that I would continue to post on the original blog. He refused it.. so I created th new blog just for my own posts... and renamed the old existing blog as the "Legacy blog".

I even created the hub page so that people could view blog posts and see what they wanted to read... there was no censorship of Roger's opinions. There was just a separation of main posts.. so that the blog itself did not drift further down the path of looking similar to a comment thread.

Judge dismisses suits claiming Trump violated emoluments clause
A federal court says challengers lack standing, but also declares the issue is best left to Congress.

By JOSH GERSTEIN 12/21/2017 05:07 PM EST Updated 12/21/2017 06:50 PM EST
A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a pair of lawsuits claiming that President Donald Trump’s failure to divest himself of his real estate empire and other business holdings violated the Constitution’s provision banning receipt of foreign “emoluments” while in public office.

U.S. District Court Judge George Daniels ruled that the two suits were fatally flawed because the plaintiffs failed to show injury directly related to the use of Trump’s properties by foreign officials and governments.

Boeing was already been planning on building more commercial and private jets prior to the Trumpism tax (reform) bill.

The WSJ.

Boeing Co.’s pursuit of Embraer SA fits one of the goals Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg has set for the aerospace giant: creating a level playing field in the commercial jetliner business.

Draining the E.P.A.
• More than 700 people have left the Environmental Protection Agency since President Trump took office, keeping the administration on track for its goal of cutting about 20 percent of the agency’s work force.
The departures reflect poor morale at the E.P.A., which Republicans have criticized as bloated and guilty of regulatory overreach.
• An analysis by ProPublica and The Times found that more than 200 scientists have left, as have 96 specialists who investigate and analyze pollution levels.

I remember that the stream that drained the gold refinement fascilty in Lead South Dakota. The stream was polluted with Cyanide and other poisons. It ran black and nothing could grow near the stream. It ran under Interstate 90 near Whitefish South Dakota.

Trumpism run amok would get rid of such troublesome regulations.

I backup my opinions on the economy and other issues of the day. It's better than comments like this.

"you sure you and mueller ain't related somehow, alky? you both sure do like to step on the rake virtually every fucking day."

"geez alky, your team is having a really shitty week.

it's like santa took a dump in your stocking or something."

This tops it all. (Let them die more
quickly) so I don't have to pay taxes.

I pray every day. The serenity prayer and yes even your family because they have to tolerate you.

I pray every day for my lovely wife and our family. And for my friends as they have issues with their health.

My aunt is 96 years old and has been hospitalized twice for pneumonia. She's the last of my father's family. She's beautiful and a wonderful woman who raised three wonderful daughters. They are the foundation of the family reunion in South Dakota every year. I am praying that I can see her at least one more time at the reunion.

Ivanka Trump: Tax cuts and deregulation will 'ultimately eliminate the national debt'
Business Insider Eliza Relman,Business Insider Thu, Dec 21 12:06 AM EST

Ivanka Trump appeared on Fox News' morning show, "Fox & Friends," for the second time this week to promote the GOP tax bill.
Trump said that she and Sen. Bob Corker, a longtime deficit hawk, believe the tax cuts, combined with deregulation, will "ultimately eliminate" the country's $US20.6 trillion debt.
That theory flies in the face of virtually all nonpartisan research, which shows that the GOP bill will increase the deficit by up to $US1.4 trillion.
Ivanka Trump, President Donald Trump's eldest daughter and top White House adviser, appeared on Fox News' morning show, "Fox & Friends," for the second time this week to promote the GOP tax bill, which Congress passed on Wednesday.

In the Thursday-morning interview, Ivanka Trump described winning the support of Republican Sen. Bob Corker, the longtime deficit hawk who had previously vowed

Funny thing about economic growth. Actual revenues increase even though tax rates are lowered.

It's actually works much better then spending your way out of recession like Obama tried to do.

All Obama did was skyrocket the debt with leaving a stagnant economy.

No wonder his policies were roundly rejected in 2016.
