Thank you, Rev. Boswell. Your article is scheduled to run soon in our From the Pulpit column. ______________
In the last century, numerous “historical Jesus” scholars reached two conclusions that many Christians today do not like to hear: First, that Jesus, like John the Baptizer who came before him, and like Paul and the early church that came after him, was involved in eschatological apocalyptic thinking. In other words, Jesus himself was expecting a total change to come soon to all the earth with the arrival of God’s Kingdom in all its fullness throughout the world. That did not happen, yet so many Markan passages indicate that Jesus expected it that it may be regarded as resting on solid historical bedrock (Mark 1:25; 9:1; 13:30; 14:62). That being the case, it is one of the human limitations of Jesus we must learn to live with.
Second, many scholars also concluded that Jesus was not into any kind of “atonement” thinking. The gospel claims attributed to Jesus that he would die as an offering for sin were added, those scholars believe, by the later church in an attempt to explain why the Messiah had to die.
However, one of the best historical Jesus scholars working today is Dale C. Allison who in his latest book “Constructing Jesus” puts forward convincing historical arguments that Jesus expected to be executed and believed his death was willed by God and would bring about great good.
Allison leaves open the questions as to how, when, or why Jesus came to that expectation, or exactly how he understood it. But it seems the Markan accounts of Jesus’ sharp response when Peter insisted that he was not going to have to die (“Get behind me, Satan!”), Jesus’ “ransom” statement as related to his cup words at the Last Supper, and especially his agony in Gethsemane, all combine to suggest that Allison’s findings rest on firm historical grounds (Mark 9:33; 10:45; 14:23-24,32-42).
Especially convincing, I find, is Mark’s Gethsemane scene. There Jesus, who earlier told his disciples they must be willing to lose their lives (8:35), himself became so overwhelmed by anxiety that he repeatedly begged his “Abba” (Father) not to require him to undergo the coming horror. In saying that his own will was, at least for a time, different from God’s, Jesus made an admission which the gospel’s author would never have invented.
Ultimately, however, Jesus submitted to his Father’s will: “Not what I want, but what you want.”
Justice Dept recovers FBI officials' missing text messages
5 hrs ago WASHINGTON, Jan 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department's internal watchdog said Thursday it recovered five months of missing text messages between two Federal Bureau of Investigation officials whom Republicans have accused of bias against President Donald Trump.
In a letter to several key Republican lawmakers, Inspector General Michael Horowitz said he would not object if the Justice Department shares with congressional committees the messages between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page that were recovered using forensic tools.
In texts that were previously released to Congress, Strzok and Page referred to Trump as an "idiot" and a "loathsome human." After news reports about the messages, lawmakers demanded to see them amid Republican concerns that agency officials were biased against Trump.
Strzok and Page both worked on the FBI's investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, and they also each briefly worked on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe into whether the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
Their cellphones are just two of "thousands" whose texts were not backed up and stored on the FBI's systems between Dec. 14, 2016 and May 17, 2017, according to a Justice Department official.
The FBI has blamed the snafu on "misconfiguration issues" that occurred while the bureau was rolling out new software updates for Samsung 5 devices.
But Republicans have claimed the timing is suspect, especially because May 17 marks the date that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel.
Strzok and Pages' text messages have become a focal point of congressional Republicans' investigation into whether the FBI is biased against Trump and gave Clinton more favorable treatment in its investigation of her private email use.
Horowitz, whose office is conducting its own review into the FBI's handling of the Clinton matter, discovered the texts over the summer and informed Mueller. Strzok was then reassigned. Page, meanwhile, left the team in July after her 45-day detail ended.
While Republicans have accused the two of bias against Trump, SOME OF THE TEXTS SUGGEST HE WAS JUST ONE OF MANY PEOPLE TARGETED IN THEIR ROUTINE POLITICAL BANTER..
AT TIMES, FOR INSTANCE, THEY WERE ALSO CRITICAL OF CLINTON..
In addition, another Strzok text also appears to CONTRADICT THE NOTION THAT THE FBI IS OUT TO GET TRUMP, AFTER HE TOLD PAGE HE WAS HESITANT TO JOIN Mueller's team because of his "gut sense and concern there's no big there there."
When it comes to how the FBI conducted its Hillary investigation, the news keeps going from bad to worse.
Pulling Punches in the Clinton Investigation. On February 25, 2016, Strzok and Page discussed via text how many personnel from DOJ and FBI would be included in the Clinton investigation and what the best ratio should be. In that discussion, Ms. Page issued the following warning to Mr. Strzok, about dealing with Secretary Clinton: Page: One more thing: she might be our next president. The last thing you need us going in there loaded for bear. You think she’s going to remember or care that it was more doj than fbi? Strzok: Agreed. I called Bill and relayed what we discussed. He agrees. If does confirm that the FBI has zero evidence of any wrongdoing.

“President Trump ordered the firing last June of Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation, according to four people told of the matter, but ultimately backed down after the White House counsel THREATENED TO RESIGN rather than carry out the directive,” the New York Times reports.
“The West Wing confrontation marks the first time Mr. Trump is known to have tried to fire the special counsel. Mr. Mueller learned about the episode in recent months as his investigators interviewed current and former senior White House officials in his inquiry into whether the president obstructed justice.”

Trump Will Support Citizenship Path for 1.8 Million
“President Trump’s immigration proposal to Congress will include a path to citizenship for an estimated 1.8 million young undocumented immigrants… more than twice the number of ‘dreamers’ who were enrolled in a deferred action program Trump terminated last fall,” the Washington Post reports. “The figure represents a significant concession to Democrats but is likely to produce sharp blowback among conservative Republicans.”
“Trump’s plan… also includes a $25 billion ‘trust fund’ for a border wall and additional security upgrades on both the southwest and northern U.S. borders. And the president will propose significant curbs to legal immigration channels, restricting the ability of U.S. citizens to petition for visas only for spouses and minor children and ending categories for parents and siblings. Both of those provisions are likely to engender fierce objections among liberal Democrats.”
The New York Times reports White House officials called the plan “extremely generous” but also a “take-it-or-leave-it proposal” by the president.

Senate Will Release Transcripts from Trump Jr. Interview
Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, “plans to release transcripts of its interviews with President Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., and others who participated in a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer allegedly promising damaging information about Hillary Clinton,” the Washington Post reports.
In a recent Politico interview, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) predicted the Trump Jr. transcript would be “explosive” if released.

What Happens When Trump Testifies
Timothy O’Brien writes about how he was sued by Donald Trump for libel in 2006 for a biography called TrumpNation and witnessed the future president testifying under oath:
_______________ Trump ultimately had to admit 30 times that he had lied over the years about all sorts of stuff: how much of a big Manhattan real estate project he owned; the price of one of his golf club memberships; the size of the Trump Organization; his wealth; his speaking fees; how many condos he had sold; his debts, and whether he borrowed money from his family to avoid going personally bankrupt. He also lied during the deposition about his business dealings with career criminals.
Trump’s poor performance stemmed in part from the fact that he was being interrogated by shrewd attorneys wielding his own business and financial records against him. But there were lots of other things that went wrong as well.
Trump is impatient and has never been an avid or dedicated reader. That’s OK if you’d rather play golf, but it’s not OK when you need to absorb abundant or complex details. Lawyers typically prepare binders full of documents for their clients to pore over prior to a deposition, hoping to steel them for an intense grilling. My lawyers did that prior to my own deposition in the Trump lawsuit. But Trump didn’t appear to be well prepared when we deposed him, a weakness that my lawyers exploited (and that Mueller surely would as well).
A new Quinnipiac poll finds that the vast majority of American voters do not think President Trump is a good role model for children, 67% to 29%.
“There is almost no gender gap in grading President Trump’s standing as a role model. Every party, gender, education, age and racial group, except Republicans, say the president falls short.”
Republicans say Trump is a good role model for children by 72% to 22%.
