Not exactly sure why this song came to mind?

Btw... does anyone else realize that the only reason the shit hole comment is being talked about is because the Democrats were probably getting their collective asses handed to them in the immigration talks and were looking for some sort of distraction from their own failure?

Trump Flushes Away America’s Reputation

From a New York Times editorial:

Mr. Trump denied making the remarks on Friday, but Senator Richard Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, who attended the meeting, said the president did in fact say these “hate-filled things, and he said them repeatedly.”

Of course he did. Remember, Mr. Trump is not just racist, ignorant, incompetent and undignified. He’s also a liar.

A Racist in the Oval Office

John Cassidy: “For the past year, Republicans, senior Democrats, and many media commentators have held back from applying the R-word to Trump. In some circumstances, there are good reasons for exercising such caution. Calling someone a bigot is not a step to take lightly. Often, it can shut down discourse and fuel animosity. With Trump, there is the added consideration that, as long as he’s the President, other politicians in Washington have little choice but to deal with him. Also, he runs his mouth so much that a lot of what comes out of it doesn’t merit serious consideration.

“After this latest outburst, however, the arguments for being reticent seem absurd. The obvious truth can no longer be avoided or sugarcoated: we have a racist in the Oval Office.”

Porn Star Had Multiple Interviews Lined Up Before Election
January 13, 2018 at 7:41 aM

Some followup on news that President Trump’s lawyer paid adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 just before the presidential election to stay silent about their affair:

The New York Times says Daniels had been discussing sharing her account with ABC’s “Good Morning America” and the online magazine Slate before being paid.

The Daily Beast had “also been in protracted talks with Daniels about arranging an interview after three sources—including fellow porn star Alana Evans—told The Daily Beast that Daniels and Trump were involved. She ultimately backed out on Nov. 3, just five days before the 2016 election.”

It’s Like Trump Is Trying to Lose Florida

“President Trump’s comments about ‘shithole countries’ like Haiti could hurt him most severely in his winter home of Florida, a state that’s also home to a large Haitian community. And it’s just the latest time he’s singled out a key voting bloc to antagonize in the state,” TPM reports.

“His racially charged comments add insult to injury to the community, just weeks after his administration ended temporary status protection for 60,000 Haitian refugees living in the U.S.

“And that’s nothing compared to how much he’s infuriated the state’s fast-growing Puerto Rican community with his administration’s shoddy response to Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island.”

I think that the outcry over Trump's shithole comments about immigration policy is because it shows at least prejudice and possibly racism. Democrats generally disapprove of prejudiced and/or racist immigration policy.

If they are failing to prevent that, then they're calling attention to their failure, not distracting away from it.

Indy Voter said...

It was a blatantly racist set of comments by the POS. If he stopped with the "shithole countries" statement this would blow over quickly. But he compounded it by saying the U.S. should receive more immigrants from lily-white Norway.

wphamilton said...

It could also be a class prejudice, cultural bias, or this weird cult of wealth that Trump fosters. He may believe that any immigrant from what he calls "shithole countries" is low class, having little in material wealth, and therefore less worthy than immigrants from more prosperous countries like Norway.

That's not to say that Trump wasn't being racist. Perhaps he was. But it could be from any of several other ignorant opinions that Trump sometimes expresses.

C.H. Truth said...

Depends on the goals of immigration.

If, as many supporters of immigration contend... the idea is to allow the best of the rest of the world to come to America to further enrich and improve our nation... then we would/should be careful about who we do let in. They should be somewhat educated, or able to become educated in our post-secondary education system... or otherwise have skills.

If, as others contend... immigration must be considered a humanitarian situation, where we bring in people from places in the world that they are otherwise oppressed and living conditions are dangerous (you know, those places we might not refer to as utopias)... then it's a completely different story.

If it's the former, then we should be taking people from countries where they are already educated, already able to move into and engage within our culture. We should be taking the best of the best. we should be wary of taking people "just" because their country is in in tatters, war worn, medically suspect, or dirt poor

(Not sure how one might describe those types of places, but I am sure there is a word or two)...

There is no bitterness, just an honest and deliberate evaluation.

I think I know exactly what the issue is. I think that most of Trump's supporters, even if they are decent human beings, suffer under the delusion that regardless of what Trump says or does, no matter what kind of person he proves himself to be, believe that he will institute policies that will help them personally. That belief may be delusional, but it's the same principle as any scam perpetrated on anyone: play on their selfish greed, give them overblown promises that sound too good to pass up, and people will suspend rational judgement based on the hope that they'll actually get it in the end.

When you're drawn in to that extent, objective evidence is disregarded. Usually the scammer will attempt to compromise the mark in the beginning; nothing big, but enough to make the mark feel like he's already in it. A hint that something someone else involved does that isn't above board, or that someone else will get screwed (but likely deserves to get screwed). Easily rationalized, but the key is making the victim feel like his integrity or usual principles are already compromised, making it harder to back out and easier to rationalize the next step.

I think that respondents here have already fallen into that trap with Trump, and therefore are in it for the long haul, regardless of anything that Trump may say or do. ANY evidence to the contrary will be met with the irrational justifications, such as "bitter", "deranged" or fanciful speculations.

Crying Chuck Schumer and the rest of the Democrats are not interested in immigration, unless those immigrants are nearly a guaranteed Democratic vote. White evangelical Christians may vote Republican, which is why they would reject immigration from Norway.

My opponents are the true racists here.

I think that most of Trump's supporters, even if they are decent human beings, suffer under the delusion that regardless of what Trump says or does, no matter what kind of person he proves himself to be, believe that he will institute policies that will help them personally.

What exactly does this mean, WP?

Are you suggesting that the policies he institutes are somehow ultimately tied to things he says? That somehow the tax cuts would have otherwise raised someone's paycheck... but then he went and said "shit hole" and now that tax cut law is different and won't help?

Have you ever "really" stopped to consider the concept that there are a great deal of people in this country who don't care if the President said the words "shit hole" and likely assume that much worse has been stated by Presidents and other politicians behind closed doors in the past?

Have you ever "really" stopped to consider why the hell it matters to you what the President "tweets" about? Because it certainly doesn't matter to a lot of people like me... largely because it hasn't, doesn't and won't effect me.

Have you ever "really" stopped to consider that some people actually do care about policy more than they care about the soap opera portions of the Presidency?

Have you ever "really" stopped to consider that judging the policy might actually be the more mature, more grounded, and more important consideration than constantly judging tweets and leaked stories of unusual behavior?

The truth, WP... (and we all deep down know it to be true) is that there is a great deal of "bitterness" about the 2016 election. That bitterness only gets worse as Trump actually makes policy and other advancements. Every time he lifts a regulation, or nominates another conservative judge, or signs something into law... it signals a country going in the opposite direction from where liberals want it to go. It could have been (and in the minds of liberals should have been) Hillary moving us in the "correct" direction.

So to pretend that liberals are not "bitter" about that, is a little like not acknowledging gravity.

Furthermore, bitterness makes it impossible to simply judge the President on his policies, his political victories, a growing economy, rising wealth, and lowering unemployment, etc... etc...

Bitterness requires that you judge him on something that allows you an outlet of angry release. So you attack the President over "tweets" and second hand stories, pretending that it actually tangibly matters (when deep down you know it doesn't), because it's all you have.

Sad, really... but understandable.

In the last decades, Norway has become home to increasing numbers of immigrants, foreign workers, and asylum-seekers from various parts of the world. Norway had a steady influx of immigrants from South Asia (mostly Pakistanis and Sri Lankans), East Asia (mainly Chinese), and Southeast Asia (e.g. Filipinos), Eastern Europe (e.g. Russians and Poles), Southern Europe (Greeks, Albanians and people from former Yugoslavia etc.), and Middle East countries (especially Iraqis and Palestinians), as well as Somalis, Turks, Moroccans, and some Latin Americans. After ten Eastern European and Baltic countries joined the EU in 2004, there has also been a substantial influx of people from Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Why don't you correlate GDP with the NFL record of the Eagles? It would be just as valid.

As I said, you have been unable to link any 2017 economic growth with Trump policies. Repeating the unsupported (and frankly, nonsensical) claim is fails to actual link them.

When several of you claimed that it was "the tax package", and I point out that there WAS NO tax package in 2017, you all back up and say it the expectation of a tax package. When I point out that no one had an "expectation" of a tax package, since every other legislative attempt failed, you say it was Trump's "promise" that a tax package would some day be implemented. When I point out that no one has expanded their business, nor hired anyone, and publicly stated that it was due to the "promise" of an an expected tax package maybe next year - silence.

So no, cs, "under Trump's first year" doesn't mean anything. Eagles made the playoffs in Trump's first year. So what?

Come on menstral cramp....provide a single example of a trump policy creating a job..

Too easy, 2018 is going to be even better.

The US labor market forged ahead in 2017. Job growth was strong and steady after accounting for hurricanes and extreme weather. Unemployment kept falling and wage growth picked up a bit. Best of all—the labor market recovery reached many of the least well-off, including those who were hurt most in the recession.

Still, the good news hasn’t touched everyone. The biggest short-term challenge is not growth, but distribution—some sectors of the economy and a few regions of the country lagged. Furthermore, the welcome narrowing of some labor market gaps in 2017 might turn out to be temporary. The labor market also faces longer-term challenges from technological disruption and polarization. In short, behind the successes of 2017, we found plenty to watch, wonder and even worry about in the year ahead.

The labor market made impressive gains this past year. October 2017 was the 85th consecutive month of job growth. So far in 2017, monthly job growth has averaged 169,000—down modestly from previous years, but more than we’d expect after so many years of recovery and expansion. Job growth is also still far ahead of what’s needed to keep up with low working-age population growth.

We've already established that you cannot link 2017's growing economy, unemployment nor the Stock Market highs with Trump's presidential policies.

Hardly... in fact, it would be closer to the truth to say that we can entirely link the growing economy and stock market to Trump's Presidential policy. It's the only variable change from when we had a lackluster economy, with tepid growth, low wages, and low consumer confidence.

But it's a typical WP argument... start with a head in the sand, cover your ears and scream lalalalala over and over when it comes to the reality, then suggest because "you personally" don't acknowledge anything Trump has accomplished so far. Then suggest that it's fair to judge him instead on his twitter account and unsubstantiated reports of behind the scenes behavior...

Which of course, you believe as the absolute truth, much like a child believes in the Easter bunny and Santa Claus.

So in a nutshell, WP...

Your argument is:

Ignore the tangible reality as if it doesn't exist.
Embrace the unsubstantiated stories and reports as if they must be 100% true.

Up is down. Black is white. Left is right.

See what Donald Trump has turned you into? You have becomes a National Inquirer reader.

It's the only variable change from when we had a lackluster economy, with tepid growth, low wages, and low consumer confidence.

Non sequitor typical of someone desperate to credit achievements to a politician who realistically has none.

"It's the only change" so therefore it's the cause. Do I even NEED to explain how pathetic that reasoning is? From the provably wrong assumption, to the faulty logic?

Commonsense said...

Non sequitur is not the fallacy you're looking for WP.

But sometimes what follows is really because of it.

In this case, the mere promise of tax cuts and regulatory relief by Trump was enough the jump start the economy.

wphamilton said...

Don't try to nerd "correct" me - Non sequitur is any inference which doesn't follow. Any logical fallacy. Which is most definitely what CH's reasoning is, so of course it is the fallacy that I'm referring to.

"In this case, the mere promise of tax cuts" - a good example of that pathetic fallacy. Obviously, "the mere promise" of tax cuts have never in the history of the United States led to economic expansion, particularly not the year before the "promised" tax cuts even went into effect.

It's magical thinking, barely even rises to the level of a logical fallacy.

I am not going rehash the argument. No need to for me. The only reason you would like to, is because you lost the argument the first time.

The issue remains the same here. When it comes to judging the President:

- You ignore the fact that Trump has been succeeding in tangible ways.
- You choose to embrace the soap opera hysteria regarding twitter feeds, and leaked stories from unidentified sources.

You have become the typical overemotional non-logical liberal. But I would go with your heart, WP... because quite obviously Trump fried your brain.

C.H. Truth said...

WP... you remind me of my old friend John, who passed away a few years ago.

He was a hard core Weekly Standard, Federalist sort of conservative/neo-conservative for most of his life. But when the neo-conservative experiment largely failed under Bush, he became somewhat disillusioned and decided to support Barack Obama over John McCain, because of his belief we need a change in direction. He was also impressed with the intelligence of Obama, and never thought McCain was that bright.

He told me that taking the liberal positions was often times frustrating for him. He told me that things that made sense in his head, made no sense once he had to put them on paper or say them out loud. He openly admitted that he missed being able to make a "logical" conservative argument... rather than dance around the illogical portions of his liberal arguments.

Eventually he was not all that impressed with the Obama Presidency either and was starting to move back towards and re-embrace conservatism just before he passed.

But you remind me of him. Someone who used to be far more conservative (and logical) and now spends 500 words trying to make an illogical argument appear less illogical.

Commonsense said...

Don't try to nerd "correct" me - Non sequitur is any inference which doesn't follow

Actually it does follow so it not a non sequitur.

What it is is post hoc ergo propter hoc. And in this case it's true.

Consider yourself nerd corrected again.

And if you don't like it, take a course in logic.

wphamilton said...

I am not going rehash the argument. No need to for me. The only reason you would like to, is because you lost the argument the first time.

Actually I was responding. But no, I did not "lose the argument". That's laughable because you don't eve have an argument.

The funny thing about this, in every election with a change in party, I bring up a few of these same points. There is a lag time between federal policy and economic impact. That's a lag from actually implementing it, not just the idea that it might be implemented. The first year of a new President in fact is operating under the previous President's budget and policies.

Yet every single election, there are some people who want to credit or blame the new President for immediate economic conditions. And YOU, CH, personally agreed with me on many of those occasions. It is a simplistic argument, as you have agreed, and of course economic conditions were evolving to that point and continued on a trajectory already set. Yet now, you look through an ideological prism and YOU are one of those people you formerly just shook your head at.

wphamilton said...

What it is is post hoc ergo propter hoc. And in this case it's true.

So I DO have to go through the reasons why both the assumption and the logic is wrong for you? But I think you already know because you quoted one of the problems. And then justify the fallacy because you think it's true nevertheless. Funny argument.

Before I go into that, note that your defense of your "nerd correction" is also wrong. Whether or not it's "post hoc ergo propter hoc" it's still a non sequitor. Stop trying to nerd correct me.

C.H. Truth said...

Actually WP...

Your fallacy is the implied argument that consumer confidence, small business confidence, the Market, etc... are somehow tied to what policies we have (or had) in place... rather than tied to where we believe we are going.

People don't choose to make a big purchase, spend a little extra this Christmas, take a vacation, or make any sort of spending decision without some confidence that the future looks good. Even if they had accumulated that extra money in prior months, the decision to spend or save (for a rainy day) is directly tied to confidence.

The same basic truths hold for businesses, both small and large. The decision to expand, hire, provide raises, restock, etc... all are largely made with a focus on the future (not on the focus of the past).

While I understand (and agree) that many policy changes take time to take hold... and within a Presidency, we may not see results one way or the other. But the basic issue of confidence is one of the most overriding factors in most any decision making (both consumer and business).

To suggest that a change in Presidency (especially from one of the least business friendly Presidents to one of the most business friendly Presidents) would not have any change to confidence (and future confidence) is a staggeringly illogical argument to make.

Or to otherwise suggest that people (consumers and business decision makers) don't take future confidence into play as a major factor... is equally illogical.

Where I would agree with you WP...

Is that it would be imprudent to Judge Bush 43 or Obama for taking over an economy that was either heading towards or in a full blown recession. To blame Bush 43 or Obama for job losses (or negative growth) that took place over the first few months of their Presidency would certainly be unfair.

While confidence (one way or the other) has an effect on our economy, there can be forces in place that are simply too large to be overshadowed by the intangibles.

There were not any overwhelming forces in place a year ago. We effectively had a fairly stagnant economy for the past few years. There was room for the economy to be bolstered by nothing more than a new found confidence in the future.

While you might not like it, business owners and executives (both small and large) seem to have more confidence today. Consumer confidence is higher. the Market (which is entirely speculative) is higher.

wphamilton said...

While you might not like it, business owners and executives (both small and large) seem to have more confidence today.

What you don't seem to understand, is that a business owners "confidence" today has zero to do with decisions he made a year ago.

Have you ever even made a business decision? Are you imagining that aome large portion of business managers woke up one day, say last May, or even June, and said to their partners and investors, "Say, now that Trump is President we may get better taxes a year from now. Let's ramp up hiring and capital expenditures! Yeah I know that he's got nothing through yet, but I have CONFIDENCE." If so, then you probably have no experience at all, just imagination.

Or do you believe that they're all like another poster here, telling themselves "Hey I paid a HEAP less taxes this year, Yay Trump" not even realizing that there were no Trump changes to their taxes?

You can't come up with a single supporting example. Your whole argument is a joke.

wphamilton said...

Ever notice that when you want to add a spurious "you don't accept", "you don't understand" "you may not like it" and so on, you generally get it wrong?

What is the consumer confidence level right now, compared two years ago? One year ago? And do you really believe that any corporation based any hiring and expansion decisions on a small rise in that index?

Just how much higher do you think it WAS in 2017, compared to 2016? Did you even check?

Obviously, he was right.

wphamilton said...

Well since Coldheart didn't have the guts and honesty to answer, here are the vaunted consumer sentiment numbers. Consumer sentiment in January 2017 was 98.5, dropping to 93.4 in July and peaking briefly at 100.7 in October.

The year before, the number was about 97-99 midyear, peaking to over 100 later.

Huh, imagine that. Consumer sentiment wasn't the reason for higher growth in 2017 after all.

It shouldn't surprise him, if he'd paid attention to my earlier posts, because I had already explained where the consumer portion of the (slight) GDP growth actually came from in 2017. Primarily auto purchases, and financial services. Strong consumer sentiment drives increased spending more generally, large purchases, more fuel because more trips, more entertainment. There was a small bit of that in 2017 ... and "financial services".

AND btw CH, I also explained to you where the business side of GDP growth came from. And guess what, it's no more indicative of "business confidence" as the cause than was the consumer side.
