Has Mueller actually uncovered anything so far?

The Russian journalist who helped uncover election interference is confounded by the Mueller indictments
A 37-page indictment issued by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s team on Friday brings fresh American attention to one of the strangest elements of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election: The Internet Research Agency (IRA), a state-sponsored “troll factory” in St. Petersburg.
But much of the information Mueller published on Friday about the agency’s efforts to influence the election had already been published last October — in an article by a Russian business magazine, RBC.
In a 4,500-word report titled “How the 'troll factory' worked the U.S. elections,” journalists Polina Rusyaeva and Andrey Zakharov offered the fullest picture yet of how the “American department” of the IRA used Facebook, Twitter and other tactics to inflame tensions ahead of the 2016 vote. The article also looked at the staffing structure of the organization and revealed details about its budget and salaries.
If you read the WaPo article, it would appear that Mueller simply took most every person mentioned in the previously publicized RBC report and named them in the indictment. According to the article, some of the people mentioned were no more than low level employees who left the company in 2014, before much of this took place.

So while we have been led to believe that this indictment was the end result of high level American intelligence, it would appear that it's not much more than some simple follow up on known information. In essence, Mueller simply chose to bring indictments for what has been previously alleged by other people. Indictments that have zero chance of arrests, trials, or convictions.

This would parrot a similar theme with Mueller indicting Paul Manafort for old allegations that he had previously been investigated for (but never charged). Similarly both the original George Papadopoulos and General Flynn misleading statement charges happened prior to the Mueller assignment. It makes you wonder why neither had previously been charged by the FBI for misleading statements?

So it's certainly very fair to ask. Is Mueller and his probe actually doing any true investigation, or are they simply combing through existing intelligence looking to find people to charge with crimes? Perhaps that is what you can expect, when you put a team of federal prosecutors in charge of what had been a counterintelligence investigation?

Your obsession with protecting the President from harm is a failure, as is the President.

David Frum says the truth. He is a failure saw the President of the United States Of America and for which it stands. The only thing he cares about, is himself.

From that position of power, Trump has systematically attempted to shut down investigations of the foreign-espionage operation that operated on his behalf. He fired the director of the FBI to shut it down. His White House coordinated with the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee to misdirect the investigation. He mobilized the speaker of the House to thwart bipartisan investigations under broadly respected leadership. He has inspired, supported, and joined a national propaganda campaign against the Mueller investigation.

And all the while, Trump has done nothing—literally nothing—to harden the nation’s voting systems against follow-on Russian operations. On Sunday, he publicly repudiated his own national-security adviser for acknowledging at the Munich Security Conference the most incontrovertible basics of what happened in 2016.

It’s worth thinking about what a patriotic president would have done in Trump’s situation. He would be leading the investigation himself. He would be scouring his own campaign—doing everything in his power to reassure the country that whatever the Russians may or may not have done, his government owed Putin nothing. He would have imposed penalties on Russia for their outrageous acts—rather than protecting Russia from penalties voted by Congress. Above all, he would be leading the demand for changes to election laws and practices, including holding Facebook to account for its negligence.

At every turn, Trump has failed to do what a patriotic president would do—failed to put the national interest first. He has left the 2018 elections as vulnerable as the 2016 elections to Russian intervention on his behalf.

Trump continues to insist that he and his campaign team did not collude with Russia in the 2016 election. We know that they were ready and eager to collude—that’s on the public record. (“If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”) The public does not yet know whether the collusion actually occurred, and if so, in what form and to what extent. But in front of our very eyes we can observe that they are leaving the door open to Russian intervention on their behalf in the next election. You might call it collusion in advance—a dereliction of duty as grave as any since President Buchanan looked the other way as Southern state governments pillaged federal arsenals on the eve of the Civil War.

Trump will join Buchanan on the Wall of Shame of the worst President in history. Let us hope that he does not succeeded in putting the United States in mortal danger.

This has nothing to do with the President.

This has everything to do with the Mueller investigation and whether or not he is actually investigating anything, or just trying to come up with excuses to prosecute people for actions that the FBI originally didn't find criminal.

Even further, Paul Manafort, whom you disregard his behavior both before and during the campaign, is going to be under further pressure to testify to the grand jury.

The former top aide to Donald Trump's presidential campaign will plead guilty to fraud-related charges within days — and has made clear to prosecutors that he would testify against Paul Manafort, the lawyer-lobbyist who once managed the campaign.

The change of heart by Trump's former deputy campaign manager Richard Gates, who had pleaded not guilty after being indicted in October on charges similar to Manafort's, was described in interviews by people familiar with the case.

"Rick Gates is going to change his plea to guilty,'' said a person with direct knowledge of the new developments, adding that the revised plea will be presented in federal court in Washington "within the next few days.''

Mueller is heading the prosecutions of Gates and Manafort as part of the wide-ranging investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether Trump or his aides committed crimes before, during or since the campaign.. Aka the"witch hurt."

The imminent change of Gates' plea follows negotiations over the last several weeks between Green and two of Mueller's prosecutors – senior assistant special counsels Andrew Weissmann and Greg D. Andres.

The delicate terms reached by the opposing lawyers, he said, will not be specified in writing: Gates "understands that the government may move to reduce his sentence if he substantially cooperates, but it won't be spelled out.''

One of the final discussion points has centered on exactly how much cash or other valuables — derived from Gates' allegedly illegal activity — that the government will require him to forfeit as part of the guilty plea.

Gates, 45, who is married with four children, does not appear to be well positioned financially to sustain a high-powered legal defense.

The Oct. 27 indictment showed that prosecutors had amassed substantial documentation to buttress their charges that Manafort and Gates — who were colleagues in political consulting for about a decade — had engaged in a complex series of allegedly illegal transactions rooted in Ukraine. The indictment alleged that both men, who for years were unregistered agents of the Ukrainian government, hid millions of dollars of Ukraine-based payments from U.S. authorities.

According to the indictment, Gates and Manafort "laundered the money through scores of United States and foreign corporations, partnerships and bank accounts'' and took steps to evade related U.S. taxes.

If Manafort maintains his not-guilty plea and fights the charges at a trial, the testimony from Gates could provide Mueller's team with first-person descriptions of much of the allegedly illegal conduct. Gates' testimony, said a person familiar with the pending guilty plea, would place a "cherry on top'' of the government's already formidable case against Manafort.

The same individual said he did not believe Gates has information to offer Mueller's team that would "turn the screws on Trump.'' The president has repeatedly called the special counsel's investigation a "witch hunt." You also have been claiming that the investigation a "witch hunt"

>Claiming that the investigation is just a reason to protect the FBI from criticism, is just exactly what the President has been saying, and as usual, you are following orders. ______________

I arrived there, and I immediately felt like a character in the book 1984 by George Orwell — a place where you have to write that white is black and black is white. Your first feeling, when you ended up there, was that you were in some kind of factory that turned lying, telling untruths, into an industrial assembly line. The volumes were colossal — there were huge numbers of people, 300 to 400, and they were all writing absolute untruths. It was like being in Orwell’s world.

My untruths amounted to posting comments. I worked in the commenting department — I had to comment on the news. No one asked me my opinion. My opinions were already written for me, and I had to write in my own words that which I was ordered to write.

It is not an attempt to defend the FBI investigation. The Russians have been working on this since 2013, and the fact that this started before the 2016 election is irrelevant to the ongoing investigation into the Russian interference into our most important right of the people of the United States, have that right to elect their leaders. What Led to Trump’s Weekend Twitter Tirade

“President Trump began the weekend believing that something good had just happened to him. An indictment leveled against 13 Russians for interfering with the 2016 election had not accused him or anyone around him of wrongdoing. ‘No collusion’ was his refrain,” the New York Times reports.

“But once ensconced at his Florida estate on Friday, Mr. Trump, facing long hours indoors as he avoided breezy rounds of golf after last week’s school shooting a few miles away, began watching TV.”

“The president’s mood began to darken as it became clearer to him that some commentators were portraying the indictment as nothing for him to celebrate… Those commentators called it proof that he had not won the election on his own… What followed was a two-day Twitter tirade that was unusually angry and defiant even by Mr. Trump’s standards.”

Whatever Trump is Hiding Is Hurting All of Us Now

Thomas Friedman: “President Trump is either totally compromised by the Russians or is a towering fool, or both, but either way he has shown himself unwilling or unable to defend America against a Russian campaign to divide and undermine our democracy.

“That is, either Trump’s real estate empire has taken large amounts of money from shady oligarchs linked to the Kremlin — so much that they literally own him; or rumors are true that he engaged in sexual misbehavior while he was in Moscow running the Miss Universe contest, which Russian intelligence has on tape and he doesn’t want released; or Trump actually believes Russian President Vladimir Putin when he says he is innocent of intervening in our elections — over the explicit findings of Trump’s own C.I.A., N.S.A. and F.B.I. chiefs.

“In sum, Trump is either hiding something so threatening to himself, or he’s criminally incompetent to be commander in chief.”

All in all their budget was miniscule. It didn't appear to be very high on Putin's list of priorities.

Conservatives Urge Trump to Grant Pardons

“After months of criticizing special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, President Trump’s supporters are issuing increasingly bold calls for presidential pardons to limit the investigation’s impact,” Politico reports.

“The pleas for mercy mainly extend to the four former Trump aides who have already been swept up in the Russia probe: former campaign manager Paul Manafort, former deputy campaign manager Rick Gates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos. But they don’t stop there.”

Said conservative activist Larry Klayman: “I think he should pardon everybody — and pardon himself.”

So Meuller would offer a plea deal, even though he does NOT have further information that he could use to prosecute someone else?

Interesting idea. Unlikely IMO, but interesting.

gates pleaded guilty because he's broke.

ironically, the guy who can afford to fight this is the guy they have yet to come up with anything to charge him with -

Did you read the actual report? It explains that Gates has agreed to a plea in exchange for testimony in the case against Manafort.

But I suppose things are "never" what they appear, correct?
Certainly there is a hidden meaning behind the agreement?
It must be that Gates has information about Trump collusion?
Couldn't be anything else? Like what they are reporting?

Former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said on MSNBC Monday morning that although the Obama administration knew of Russian hacking as early as summer of 2016, the administration did nothing initially out of concern for being labeled as “taking sides.”

Yeah...

Not to mention that Robert Gates cannot afford the estimated 1.5 million dollars it would take to fight this case in court.

He is said to have agreed to serve 18 months in jail and forfeit some cash and valuables that would be deemed to be from the illegal activity.

The report also have specifically stated that there is no indication that Gates has any information regarding Trump or the collusion allegations.

that was why gen. kelly pleaded guilty. he was looking at a million just to defend himself against a fucking process crime. and now it's starting to look like someone on mueller's team was playing games.

if i'm mueller i'm going straight into rosenstein's office and telling him i quit because this is making me look like an idiot.

WP and others like to say they have researched all of this. It takes very little research to know that Mueller and many others he has hired have been accused in the past of heavy handed prosecutorial decisions that have border on prosecutorial abuse or misconduct. Multiple members of this team have had previous charges tossed out for this very reason.

If the judge in the Flynn case ends up suspending a sentence or ever overturning the plea, it would actually fit right in with Mueller's history.

Glad you finally figured that out ... I've told you that twice in this thread.

You don't think that his plea deal to testify against Manafort means that Mueller hasn't turned up any information. That makes absolutely no sense to me ... but then your other idea doesn't make sense either. (That only Russians being charged in the latest indictment means no Americans are involved in anything in Mueller's scope). So I guess that's par for the course.

he IS a bully. every act on his part so far has resulted in not much of anything. even kelly is seriously considering withdrawing his guilty plea. and it's been reported by some that gates is copping a guilty plea to roll over on manafort. it's been reported by others that he simply can't afford the criminal defense. occam's razor says follow the $$$, or lack thereof.

what could gates possibly have on manafort that mueller hasn't already uncovered?

C.H. Truth said...

You don't think that his plea deal to testify against Manafort means that Mueller hasn't turned up any information.

People familiar with the plea are stating that Gates is not offering Mueller any information on Trump or collusion. That he is just offering to testify against Manafort.

People cop pleas every day in our legal system. Are you equally confused by all of those other unrelated pleas, or just confused by this particular plea.

I guess I am not sure why taking this at face value "makes absolutely no sense" to you... It's like you hear this collusion dog whistle in everything that happens.

C.H. Truth said...

Good straw man...

I certainly have not seen that argument, or made that argument.

I have only argued that Rod Rosenstein suggested twice in his press conference that no Americans had any knowledge of the events put forward in that indictment...

because many of you argued quite the opposite. That the Mueller indictment actually promoted the argument that Americans were co-conspirators and that there would be more indictments to come.

But we are now both in agreement.

As it pertains to the trolling farm, there was no evidence presented that any Americans were involved, and that assumption was echoed in the press conference by the Asst A.G. who is supervising the probe. In that particular area, the idea of collusion seems to be a dead end.

But of course, that doesn't preclude that "other" Russian involvement had knowing American citizens... we just have absolutely zero evidence of it at this point.

I certainly have not seen that argument, or made that argument.

You make a similar mistake in your very next statement:

"I have only argued that Rod Rosenstein suggested twice in his press conference that no Americans had any knowledge of the events put forward in that indictment... "

That's NOT what he said. He does NOT say that no Americans had knowledge of the events. He said that the INDICTMENT does not allege that there are. This isn't semantics - these are vastly different.

He used the exact same wording, twice, and I believe it was deliberate with the intention that it be taken literally. Why else would he be so careful to always say "in this indictment" and "alleged by the indictment"? Why include those words at all, if he meant it as you believe? The indictment does not allege anything by any Americans. It doesn't mean that no Americans were involved.

C.H. Truth said...

WP...

Always arguing semantics.

This indictment was like 32 pages long. It told a very detailed intricate story. The Assistant Attorney General who is supervising the probe made it quite clear that there was not only no Americans with knowledge of the actions alleged in the indictment, but he even explained exactly "why" they felt confident that no Americans had knowledge.

While perhaps you are comfortable with double speak, and playing around with semantics, I find it very difficult to believe that the person in charge of all of this would get up in front of the general public (which he didn't have to do) and make the claims he did about Americans not being involved... unless they were not involved.

There is quite literally zero reason for him to basically go out (and as you are suggesting) try to deceive the public with a clever semantic double speak statement designed to fool us all.

I am not even sure "why" anyone would even consider that our A.A.G. in chare of all this would act in such an openly dishonest fashion that you are suggesting.

There would have been 101 different ways to leave it open for further action by Mueller. Why would he leave his own credibility open? If Americans were involved he will be labeled a liar, and I would offer that he would lose enough credibility that it would spill over onto the entire investigation.

Your reasoning... is wishful thinking.

Zero reason, WP. Absolutely none.

wphamilton said...

So when Rosenstien talks about what is "alleged in the indictment", and "charged in the indictment", you believe that he really means "whether or not in the indictment". Or you don't acknowledge that his words mean anything.

Got it. Your version of "reason": any logical refutation of your mistaken assumptions is "semantics".

C.H. Truth said...

I watched his Press Conference.

There was no doubt what he said.
There was no doubt what he didn't say.

There is no doubt that he meant.

C.H. Truth said...

WP...

Explain not just why "you" believe that he was using some semantic code that simply sounded like something it wasn't...

But explain the reasoning for why the Asst Attorney General would make the conscious decision to get up in front of the Country, state twice that there was no allegations that any Americans were part of this, and even explained why no Americans were part of it...

If there "are" Americans involved?

Are you thinking he is going to jump out from behind a curtain laughing maniacally and yell... Ha! fooled you all!

I mean seriously, with all the ways this particular point could have been completely avoided, why would he make the point to even bring up whether or not Americans were involved.

Obviously we can read the indictment and know that no American have been charged. He didn't need to confirm that with any sort of statement. His statement was about the lack of other involvement by Americans.

So, tell me "why" he would use the sort of semantic double speak you believe he made? Accepting the fact that nearly everyone has taken his statements at face value.... exactly as I take them?

wphamilton said...

CH I just look at the plain language of what he said. The plain language was that nothing in the indictment alleged that Americans were part of that troll scheme. Nothing more, nothing less.

Seems that you're insisting that taking Rosenstein at face value is somehow illogical or "semantic quibbling".

FWIW the lawyer I linked to earlier makes exactly the same point. She is at Yale now, lecturing on law, and formerly in the FBI as a Special Investigator, so it's not "just WP against the world". Who are you relying on, Trump's press secretary?

C.H. Truth said...

The plain language was that nothing in the indictment alleged that Americans were part of that troll scheme. Nothing more, nothing less.

Considering that the indictment was a thirty two page summary of the overall trolling scheme provided in fairly significant detail... then we are in agreement at what it means.

C.H. Truth said...

WP...

I am curious about something.

If you say that the words "alleged in this indictment" is some sort of legal double speak that is specific to leaving open the possibility that Americans are actually involved in the scheme, but just not mentioned in this indictment.

How would that also apply to the fact he uses the exact same wording to say that the scheme did not alter the results of the election? Is he also leaving open the possibility that there are other parts of the scheme that "did" alter the results of the election, but were for whatever reasons left out of the indictment? Does that seem like it would make any sense?

But he does use the same wording twice.... all while giving the clear indication that the indictment is inclusive of the facts of the scheme. Do you believe that he uses the words in one case to mean one thing and in the other case it's more straight forward?

Just curious.

wphamilton said...

"If you say that the words "alleged in this indictment" is some sort of legal double speak that is specific to leaving open the possibility that Americans are actually involved in the scheme, but just not mentioned in this indictment."

It means that he refers to that specific indictment, and makes no comment about Americans not listed in the indictment.

How could you possibly think it means anything else?
