Why is it that...

So we had a horrifying school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and of course the politics of the situation have become out of control. Now I have had very little to say on the subject, because you sort of feel like the people involved need a little space and a little leeway. It also appears like no matter how you react, it is going to offend someone. It feels like we (as a country) never allow for any grieving period, we just jump right into the politics.

But I have to ask a question here involving the two students (David Hogg and Colton Haab) that have gotten the most publicity. Why is it that David Hogg has become the instant face of the cause and is considered somewhat of a hero, while Colton Haab has been largely ignored by many on the left or has actually been getting negative publicity. Most recently, Haab has accused CNN of not allowing him to ask the questions he had written during a recent forum, which prompted CNN to issue a statement which basically called Haab a liar.  CNN stated that they did not script his question, but rather argued that Colton wanted too much of the forum's time to make his point.

Certainly David Hogg (and those students with the same view) have not had their opinions limited by time constraints. I am curious why Colton Haab should have his limited?

I think there is an an important point to make here: David Hogg spent the ordeal hiding in a closet, while Colton Haab risked his life using Kevlar sheets to shield fellow students from the shooter.

  • Why is the guy who hid in the closet the hero who deserves the spotlight?
  • Why is the guy who risked his life for others the goat who should keep his opinions to himself?

just curious...

Did not agree with CNN's gun control agenda.

And they get to say who the "hero" is.

Isn't Hogg the guy who the right wing claimed wasn't actually at the school when the shooting happened?

Indy Voter said...

Isn't Hogg also the guy who the right wing smeared because his father is a retired FBI agent?

Myballs said...

I don't recall hearing such a smear. I did see reports that Hogg showed up at a California school shooting. If true, it's either an alarming coincidence or he's not what he says he is.

And CNN once again goes low, calling a real student hero s liar. That's just very sad.

Commonsense said...

He's the guy some people on youtube said he wasn't a student.

But I don't think it's fair of smear the entire conservative movement like you are.

Shooting Survivor: CNN Gave Me "Scripted Question" After Denying Question About Armed Guards
Posted By Ian Schwartz
On Date February 22, 2018

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Colton Haab said he was approached by CNN to ask a question at Wednesday night's town hall but decided not to after the network gave him a "scripted question," quashing one he wrote himself. Haab, a member of the Junior ROTC shielded students while the school was under attack from the shooter, said he was going to ask about using veterans as armed security guards. (CNN response below.)

"CNN had originally asked me to write a speech and questions and it ended up being all scripted," Haab told WPLG-TV.

CNN aired a town hall on the Florida school shooting with Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) that included NRA's Dana Loesch and Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel that was moderated by Jake Tapper. Students and parents asked questions about gun control and school safety.

"I expected to be able to ask my questions and give my opinion on my questions," Haab said.

"Colton Haab, a member of the Junior ROTC who shielded classmates in the midst of terror says he did not get to share his experience," WPLG's Janine Stanwood explained.

"Colton wrote questions about school safety, suggested using veterans as armed school security guards but claims CNN wanted him to ask a scripted question instead so he decided not to go," Stanwood reported.

"CNN had originally asked me to write a speech and questions and it ended up being all scripted," Haab said. "I don't think that it's going get anything accomplished. It's not gonna ask the true questions that all the parents and teachers and students have."

UPDATE: CNN released the following statement Thursday morning:

CNN did not, and does not, script any questions for town hall meetings, ever.

UPDATE @8:47AM ET: CNN released a more extensive statement that explained the situation.

In a longer statement, CNN confirmed Haab was invited by the network to participate but his father decided to withdraw his name from participation. CNN said Haab wanted to give an extensive speech and not just ask a question, something the network said the forum was not designed for. CNN noted the subject Haab wanted to address, arming teachers, was discussed at length in the 2-hour long town hall event.

CNN has invited Haab to appear on the network.

Full statement from CNN's Richard Hudock:

There is absolutely no truth to this. CNN did not provide or script questions for anyone in last night's town hall, nor have we ever. After seeing an interview with Colton Haab, we invited him to participate in our town hall along with other students and administrators from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Colton’s father withdrew his name from participation before the forum began, which we regretted but respected. We welcome Colton to join us on CNN today to discuss his views on school safety.

Before LaPierre took the stage, NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch said some in the media "love mass shootings."

"Many in legacy media love mass shootings," Loesch said on stage "Now I'm not saying that you love the tragedy. But I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold..."

Loesch, who launched into an angry tirade against the media, also said Democratic lawmakers, in addition to the media, are taking advantage of the shooting.

"They're exploiting a tragedy for an agenda. Shame on you. We call B.S.," she said.

CH would have said the same thing .

Just to be clear...

The kid who saved the lives of several other students is the one you believe is simply lying to the American public... and you believe that CNN is telling you the whole truth?

And you don't believe that CNN inviting the kid to other shows after the fact is a reaction to the negative publicity?

To be perfectly clear... you trust the news network 100% over the kid?

In this case, it seems Habb is indeed the less believable of the two-- Habb or CNN

Let Habb take up CNN's invitation to discuss his views on school safety. Or will is father for some reason withdraw his name?

An opinion offered with no explanation as to why?

The kid has no reason to lie to anyone.
- CNN has every reason to lie.

The kid had no reason to not show up and provide his views if they were being allowed.
- The kid had every reason to not show up if his views were being censored.

Nothing about CNN's explanation makes any sense, unless you are willing to make the assumption that the kid and his father were being wildly irrational and then went out and lied about it.

This is CNN, slipping on the banana of FAKE NEWS

The invitation is disingenuous damage control. Everybody but the board hack knows that.

They would be just setting him up for public abuse just like they did to Dana Loesch and Marco Rubio.

James why don't you go on CNN and explain why you're not a pediophile.

C.H. Truth said...

According to everyone who watched the "forum".

It was a bunch of kids giving speeches and making statements.

CNN didn't want this particular speech or this particular statement.

That's the fact, James. Your opinion shows that you have no compassion for these kids (unless they are the ones who follow your political views).

The fact that CNN was called out for it and are "now" offering another forum for the kid is kind of proof that they were full of shit in the first place. If what the kid had to say wasn't right for a forum where his fellow students were giving their opinion... why is it suddenly okay on another (less watched) forum?

The elites care not one whit about America's school system and schoolchildren," LaPierre added.

"I hear a lot of quiet in this room, and I sense your anxiety," LaPierre said, turning to the political consequences of the debate. "And you should be anxious, and you should be frightened. If they seize power, if these so-called 'European socialists' take over the House and the Senate, and God forbid they get the White House again, our Americans freedoms could be lost and our country will be changed forever."

LaPierre also accused Democrats like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., of not working with conservatives and activists enough to address mental health as a concern and to put such checks into the database system to prevent dangerous people from getting access to guns.

That was evident when they opposed armed guards at the schools and/or arming teachers to protect the children.

I'm sure that's not a problem with the exclusive private schools they send their children to.
