He was said to be carrying a shot-gun (which is hard to confuse with an assault rifle). His ancestry is apparently Greek, not Russian as some people quickly assumed.
Let's not lose sight of the fact that 10 more children are dead, and not a single proposed gun law would have prevented it. Just last week another shooter was stopped by an armed police officer who is stationed as a school resource (much like they have at my son's high school).
The faster we admit that gun laws are not going to prevent these killings, and the faster we admit that we need to make sure our kids are protected, the faster these shootings will decrease. We should make it a federal law to train and post additional police officers at every High School and Jr High in the country. Anyone actually serious about preventing these sorts of shootings should have no reason to disagree.

Ban the sale, purchase, possession and use of any semi-automatic long gun or handgun by a private citizen. No restrictions on revolvers, derringers, bolt action, pump action or lever action long guns.
Enforcement: Allow semi-automatic gun owners to surrender their weapons to local law enforcement without a penalty. They will not be paid/reimbursed for weapons they surrender unless they have a receipt for the original purchase.
Do not start a collection effort by going to individual homes looking for weapons. Let them caress their weapons in their basements and fantasize about fighting off the evil government.
If a person takes a semi-automatic out in public for any reason and it is discovered, a search warrant will be issued for that persons home and/or business. The fine for each semi-automatic weapon found as a result of the search warrant to be $10,000. If the person cannot pay the fine, 1 year in jail for each semi-automatic weapon found.
Ban the open carry of any gun by a private citizen.
Severely restrict concealed carry to persons with a real, tangible need for self protection. The person must undergo firearms training at a police academy.

I did NOT lie when I reported yesterday that the killer had an AR-15. I only reported what a news source (an official) incorrectly stated.
Later it was stated that the killer had only a shotgun and a pistol which he got from his father.
I am extremely GLAD he did not have a semi-automatic rifle. He would probably have killed far more people if he had one.

Not true. The laws that forbade the carrying or owning of machine guns effectively got rid of machine guns.
Those neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes did not want or need them.
Those inclined to commit crimes did not want to run the risk of being caught with one, followed by severe fines and imprisonment for simply owning one.
Since the passing of the laws criminalizing machine guns, non military deaths by machine guns have become practically non existent.
