Innocent McCabe wants immunity promises before testifying...

McCabe Demands Immunity From Congress
In what must be a particularly awkward move for the former acting FBI Director, Andrew McCabe has demanded immunity in exchange for his testimony from the Senate Judiciary Committee. As we have discussed, McCabe has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for his criminal defense and the Inspector General referred his case for possible prosecution for lying to investigators. The Senate wants to hear his testimony on how senior officials at the FBI and Justice Department handled the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s private email server.
Of course, the answer to this request will no doubt be a resounding...

The reality is that McCabe might be facing some serious shit. We won't know the full extent of everything until the Inspector General's report is released, but the behavior of McCabe's attorneys in this case suggest that it probably won't look good for him. The former assistant FBI director is apparently "still" raising money for a possible criminal defense, which seems like a pretty odd thing for an innocent person to do.

_______

All that being said, if  McCabe is willing to "sing like a canary" and could provide incriminating testimony against bigger fish (Comey, Lynch, etc...) then I suppose immunity should be considered. There is speculation that McCabe could be the one person who could actually confirm some of the rumors about what things were going on behind the scenes. He also could provide key testimony that would prove once and for all that James Comey lied under oath regarding his behavior on the Hillary investigation.

The other option, according to McCabe's attorneys is for him to simply not answer questions. Take the fifth across the board. Obviously that take would cause it's own set of problems.

i don't understand. why would mccabe possibly need immunity when it is patently obvious to everyone that he has done nothing wrong to begin with.

i mean, roger has assured us that our federal law enforcement and investigative agencies are as pure as the driven snow and beyond reproach. you're just upset roger that has posted some scathing copy/pastes on his hospice blog and has unleashed his twitter mob of commenters to, as he put it, drive you out of your mind.

The Obama administration helped Iran utilize sanctioned oil revenue stranded in a foreign bank account in 2016 while actively misleading Congress about the cooperation, according to the results of a Republican led Senate investigation released Wednesday night.

After signing the 2015 nuclear deal, which unfroze Iran’s U.S. accounts in exchange for the regime’s non-proliferation pledge, the Obama administration publicly maintained that all non-nuclear sanctions barring Iran from operating within the U.S. financial system would remain in place.

“Senior U.S. government officials repeatedly testified to Congress that Iranian access to the U.S. financial system was not on the table or part of any deal,” congressional investigators wrote in the report.

Despite this pledge to the public and Congress, in February 2016 the administration assisted Tehran in recovering $5.7 billion held in the Bank Muscat in the Persian Gulf state of Oman, according to the report, compiled by the Senate’s permanent subcommittee on investigations. And, according to the report, administration officials continued to misled Congress after the license was issued.

“Even after the specific license was issued, U.S. government officials maintained in congressional testimony that Iran would not be granted access to the U.S. financial system,” the report noted.

Under the terms of the nuclear deal, Iran was entitled to access the funds, which were held in Omani rials, a currency that is notoriously difficult to convert. The Obama administration attempted to help the Iranians convert the funds to Euros by issuing a special treasury license to two large U.S. banks empowering them to convert the funds first into dollars and then euros.

According to the report, the Obama administration’s plan ultimately proved unsuccessful, but in undertaking the effort without informing Congress, officials “misled the American people by saying that Iran was not going to be granted access to the U.S. financial system,” Subcommittee Chairman Rob Portman (R., Ohio), the subcommittee’s chairman, told the Washington Post in an interview. “I think they did it because they were so eager to get an agreement with Iran.”

Access to the American financial system “is the crown jewel, what all these countries would love. Yet our government offered it, while at the same time telling the American people they weren’t offering it,” Portman added.

An unnamed former Obama official disputed Portman’s characterization, telling the Post that granting a “narrow specific license” for the transaction “cannot be described as granting access to the U.S. financial system.’”

The revelation comes after President Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, calling it a “horrible, one-sided deal.”

“This disastrous deal gave this [Iranian] regime — and it’s a regime of great terror — many billions of dollars, some of it in actual cash — a great embarrassment to me as a citizen and to all citizens of the United States,” Trump said while announcing the withdrawal.

Spygate was total bullshit.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, both Republicans, broke with President Donald Trump on Wednesday over allegations spies infiltrated his 2016 campaign, saying they agree with GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy that the FBI did "exactly" what it should have done over its handling of a confidential source.

The declarations by the leading Republicans are the latest indications that Trump lacks any evidence to back up his claims of a major political scandal he calls "spygate" -- since those lawmakers were among a select group briefed on the classified intelligence at issue. The only Republican briefed on the intelligence who has yet to break from Trump is Rep. Devin Nunes, the House Intelligence chairman who has demanded more documents as part of his investigation.

"I think Chairman Gowdy's initial assessment's accurate, I think, but we have some more digging to do. We're waiting for some more document requests," Ryan told reporters at a news conference on Capitol Hill. "It would have been helpful if we got this information earlier."

"I think that Trey Gowdy's description of the process was correct," Burr said

Officials briefed Ryan, Gowdy and other congressional leaders last month on the FBI's use of a confidential source that interacted with Trump's campaign two years ago as the Department of Justice investigated Russian meddling.

The briefings came after House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes demanded more information about the source -- a push that has prompted Trump to publicly speculate whether the FBI infiltrated his campaign. Nunes declined to comment Wednesday.

RELATED: Don't miss what Donald Trump is doing with his 'spy' allegations

Gowdy, chairman of the House Oversight Committee who is retiring at the end of his congressional term, concluded last week after attending a classified briefing that the FBI acted appropriately in the probe.

"I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump," Gowdy said in an interview on Fox News.

SAN FRANCISCO—The Democratic Party on Wednesday appeared on track to avoid being shut out of several competitive California House races, escaping pitfalls of the state’s primary election system that would have threatened its fight for control of Congress in November.

In a handful of closely watched races in Republican-held districts, a Democratic candidate finished in the top two, ensuring the party will have someone on the general-election ballot, after the party invested millions of dollars to advance some candidates and undercut others.

And in the state’s Senate race, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a five-term lawmaker who was the only Democrat in the Senate facing a serious primary challenge in 2018, was far ahead of the second-place finisher, state Sen. Kevin de Leon who is also a Democrat. That result, declared by the Associated Press Wednesday, leaves Republicans without a Senate candidate on the fall ballot in California.

From Reddit to Trump: How the President stupidly latched onto a conspiracy theory
By Jeremy Herb and Manu Raju, CNN 3 hrs ago

President Donald Trump on Tuesday night stupidly made an eyebrow-raising claim on Twitter: The FBI's investigation into the Trump campaign began in December 2015, he said -- not July 2016, as former FBI Director James Comey had testified under oath.

"SPYGATE is in full force!" Trump exclaimed, stupidly citing text messages between the FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. "Is the Mainstream Media interested yet? Big Stuff!"

But a CNN review of the text messages between Strzok and Page show no evidence to back up Trump's claims that the Trump-Russia investigation started in December 2015. And it appears that Trump was stupidly relying on a Fox Business host who suggested there were new, unredacted text messages. But those texts had actually been sitting on a Senate committee website for four months.

Trump tweeted roughly an hour after Fox Business' Lou Dobbs claimed on air that "the FBI May have initiated a number of spies into the Trump campaign as early as December of 2015."

That report came after the far-right website Gateway Pundit seized on a Twitter user and a Reddit forum posting the texts on Monday to claim the FBI was running spies into the Trump campaign in December 2015.

The revelation shines a light on how Trump stupidly tends to seize on conspiracy theories to further his arguments, blasting out unsubstantiated charges on Twitter to try to torpedo special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

On Wednesday, two top Republicans -- House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr -- said the FBI acted appropriately in how it interacted with a confidential FBI source who was in contact with several campaign aides, breaking with Trump's stupid claims of spies implanted in his campaign.

James said...

The latest conspiracy theory appears to have no basis in reality.
The text messages in question are an exchange between Strzok and former FBI lawyer Page, who traded thousands of texts while having an extramarital affair and whose messages have been seized on by critics to argue Mueller's investigation is biased against Trump.

In December 2015, Strzok texted Page: "You get all our oconus lures approved? ;)"
"No, it's just implicated a much bigger policy issue. I'll explain later. Might even be able to use it as a pretext for a call... :)" Page responded.

In the texts, "oconus" refers to "outside the continental United States," while Trump-friendly media who have suggested the investigation started in December 2015 claim that "lures" is FBI shorthand for spies.

Lures is a word in FBI parlance, but it's not a reference to spies -- it means enticing a "criminal defendant to leave a foreign country" so they can be arrested and prosecuted in the US, according to Justice Department regulations.

Regardless, none of the text messages from that same time period in December 2015 discuss any kind of investigation into Trump or Russia, although in one text Page shared a news article about Trump and called him "an utter idiot." The pair texted multiple times a day about many things including work matters, promotions and news coverage of all kinds of topics.

Congressional sources FROM BOTH PARTIES who have reviewed the texts say they have no reason to believe the text is referring to a counter-intelligence investigation into the Trump campaign.

And at the time the text messages were sent, none of the people the FBI was probing in its counterintelligence investigation -- Paul Manafort, George Papadopoulos, Carter Page and Michael Flynn -- had even joined the Trump campaign yet.

The texts were included in hundreds of pages of text messages released in February by Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. The text exchange at the center of the conspiracy theory was listed in the 500 pages of documents twice, once with "lures" redacted and once unredacted.

But the committee made no mention of the text exchange in question in its interim report detailing FBI actions in 2016, a sign that it did not view the message as significant.

James said...

Congressional sources said that the likely reason the text was both redacted and unredacted was that the Justice Department sent over multiple document productions in a hasty and chaotic manner.

Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, the Republican chairman of the committee, told CNN he wasn't familiar with the texts the President had referenced, adding he was focused on the upcoming inspector general report on the FBI's actions in 2016 and getting more information from the Justice Department.
"I don't have a catalog of all the texts," Johnson said.

On Monday, the chain of events leading to Trump's stupid tweet kicked off when a Twitter user took a photo of the two texts and claimed they showed the FBI was "using foreign agents against Trump."

After a Reddit forum picked up the image, the far-right website Gateway Pundit published a story Monday running with the conspiracy theory.

No news organizations wrote about the texts until Tuesday evening, when Dobbs ran a segment on Fox Business in which he claimed that the FBI "may have initiated a number of spies into the Trump campaign as early as December of 2015."

Dobbs' guest, Judicial Watch's Chris Farrell, agreed with Dobbs' unproven claims. "From very early on back 2015, there's a concerted effort by agents from the FBI to apply intelligence tradecraft and intelligence operations to attack and undermine candidate Trump and now President Trump," Farrell said.

Less than an hour after Dobbs' show wrapped, Trump stupidly sent his tweet claiming the FBI's counter-intelligence campaign dated back to December 2015. In a subsequent stupid tweet, Trump touted the "great interview" by Dobbs.

Trump's tweet put the issue on the radar of Fox News. With an on-screen banner claiming "New Strzok-Page texts released," Fox News host Laura Ingraham claimed, "It certainly appears they were looking to put more lures into the campaign in 2015."

Rep. Ron DeSantis, a Florida Republican who has been a sharp Mueller critic, did not dispute Ingraham's contention on her show, raising questions about why the text had been redacted.

"This did not just start in the 31st of July (2016)," DeSantis stupidly said of the FBI's investigation.

DeSantis and a White House spokesman DID NOT RESPOND to a request for comment.

LOL I GUESS NOT!

BREAKING NEWS - OBAMA ADMINISTRATION LIED TO CONGRESS ABOUT IRAN DEAL
By Kevin Ryan

The Associated Press is reporting that the Obama administration lied when it repeatedly told U.S. lawmakers that it would abide by sanctions barring Iran from using the U.S. banking system.

At the time, many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle argued that Obama was giving far too much to Iran, and that sanctions relief would be used to fund extremism and the expansion of Iran’s military. Congress demanded that any deal with Iran not allow it to use U.S. banks to convert Iranian assets into dollars, which would have allowed it to regain access to billions in foreign reserves that had been off-limits because of the sanctions.

The Obama administration gave assurances, in testimony to congress, that no such relief would be given. Shortly after the nuclear deal was sealed, then-Treasury Secretary Jack Lew testified that Iran “will continue to be denied access to the world’s largest financial and commercial market.” A month later, Lew’s deputy also testified that “Iran will be denied access to the world’s most important market and unable to deal in the world's most important currency.”

AP: “Yet almost immediately after the sanctions relief took effect in January 2016, Iran began to complain that it wasn't reaping the benefits it had envisioned.” Tehran wanted to convert its assets from foreign currencies into easier-to-spend currencies like euros, yen, or rupees, by first exchanging them for dollars. But sanctions still in place prohibited banks from facilitating such transactions.

So President Obama ordered the Treasury Department to issue a license, never previously disclosed until now, that would have allowed Iran to convert billions of its foreign currency holdings into U.S. dollars, in violation of U.S. sanctions and “in stark contrast to repeated public statements from the Obama White House, the Treasury and the State Department, all of which denied that the administration was contemplating allowing Iran access to the U.S. financial system,” according to Associated Press.

Ironically, U.S. banks refused to participate, afraid of running afoul of the sanctions and face fines and penalties. The Obama administration approached two U.S. banks to facilitate the transactions, but both refused, citing the reputational risk of doing business with or for Iran.

Lawmakers are incensed by the revelation. “The Obama administration misled the American people and Congress because they were desperate to get a deal with Iran,” said Sen. Rob Portman, (R-OH).

Former Obama administration officials refused to comment on the revelation.

We will.

“August will be health care month for us Democrats.

Every time the Republicans say ‘nominations,’
we’ll say ‘lower premiums.’

When they say ‘appropriations process,’
we’ll say ‘bring down drug prices.’

Health care has been President Trump
and Congressional Republicans’ biggest failure,
and it’s the issue that’s TOP OF MIND for voters.

We Democrats are going to be relentless in pushing

During the call, Trump allegedly accused Canada of being a national security threat. Confused, Trudeau sought clarification, to which Trump retorted: “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?”

From CNN:

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a testy phone call on May 25 over new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration targeting steel and aluminum imports coming from Canada, including one moment during the conversation in which Trump made an erroneous historical reference, sources familiar with the discussion told CNN.

According to the sources, Trudeau pressed Trump on how he could justify the tariffs as a “national security” issue. In response, Trump quipped to Trudeau, “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?” referring to the War of 1812.

The problem with Trump’s comments to Trudeau is that British troops burned down the White House during the War of 1812. Historians note the British attack on Washington was in retaliation for the American attack on York, Ontario, in territory that eventually became Canada, which was then a British colony.

When asked if the comment was received as a joke, one source on the call said: “To the degree one can ever take what is said as a joke. The impact on Canada and ultimately on workers in the US won’t be a laughing matter.”

Trudeau has publicly denounced the “national security” justification for the new tariffs.

“The idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is, quite frankly, insulting and unacceptable,” Trudeau told NBC’s Meet the Press.

Anyway, as if that wasn’t golden enough, journalists, namely CNN’s prissy-britched Acosta, jumped to point out Trump’s historical wrongness…but it’s not Trump who’s wrong.

This paragraph in the EXCLUSIVE scoop doesn’t even make sense:

The problem with Trump’s comments to Trudeau is that British troops burned down the White House during the War of 1812. Historians note the British attack on Washington was in retaliation for the American attack on York, Ontario, in territory that eventually became Canada, which was then a British colony.

But Acosta persisted nonetheless:

Acosta wasn’t the only one. Here’s an NBC reporter, also confused about how history works:

Why Canada cares much more about the War of 1812

Over the weekend, there was a bit of a hubbub over a Tweet from the British Embassy in Washington, marking the 200th anniversary of the British sack of Washington and razing of the White House during the War of 1812.

The tongue-in-cheek post led to some social media grumbling and an abashed apology, as Post Politics documents here.

This small episode is, if nothing else, a reminder of the strange place that the War of 1812 occupies in the historical memory of the United States.

We're now in the third year of official commemorations of the War of 1812, a distant conflict between the British Empire and the young, upstart American republic that lasted through 1814 and was distinguished by the bumbling, hapless leadership of many of the commanders involved. It is remembered, if at all in the U.S., through isolated episodes: the burning of Washington; the death of Native American war chief Tecumseh; the naval bombardment of Fort McHenry, which led to the penning of the "Star Spangled Banner." (I wrote at length about the origins of the war, which was deeply divisive within the U.S., and the historiography about it, here.)

But it matters a lot more in Canada where, some Americans may be surprised to know, much of the war took place. Indeed, the real story of the conflict centers on the failed invasion of what's now Canada by a disorganized and ill-prepared U.S. Army. American warhawks at the time had been confident: Thomas Jefferson believed that the capture of Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario) from the British would be "simply a matter of marching." Instead, the British forces and their indigenous allies repulsed the American incursions in battles that gave rise to some of Canada's earliest nationalist heroes, as this official Canadian government video celebrates:

DISASTER: Schultz' Shady IT Staffer to Make a PLEA DEAL with DOJ

Debbie Wasserman Schultz found herself in the hot seat Wednesday after her shady IT staffer who attempted to flee to Pakistan announced his plans to reach a plea deal with American prosecutors, reports Fox News.

Schultz’ IT aide, Imran Awan, rose to national headlines last year after he was arrested at a DC area airport while attempting to flee to Pakistan; raising serious questions over his access to top secret DNC emails and documents surrounding the Florida congresswoman.

“Awan and his wife, Hina Alvi, were charged last summer with bank fraud. They now appear poised to strike a plea deal with the Department of Justice. A plea agreement hearing is set for July 3 before U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan in Washington,” Fox News reported Wednesday.

This is going to have a negative impact upon the Republicans in the House races in the even red states like Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana and others.

Mexican tariffs are roiling U.S. congressional campaigns in states where U.S. exporters could take a hit and President Donald Trump's Republicans face tough races in November congressional elections.

Mexico announced the levies this week in retaliation to Trump's decision to slap tariffs on metal imports from Mexico and other countries. They fall on only about $3 billion in U.S. exports, but were crafted to have a "very specific" focus on vulnerable Republicans, said one senior Mexican official who asked not to be named.

"We wanted to ensure that the issue is a top priority for key decision makers at the highest level," said another Mexican official who requested anonymity.

The tariffs could hit American apple growers in Washington state, cheesemakers in California and pork producers in Iowa, Virginia and Colorado.

Apples are grown in Washington's 8th congressional district, where U.S. Representative Dave Reichert, a Republican, is retiring. Mexico slapped a 20 percent tax on fresh U.S. apples, and Democratic candidate Kim Schrier hammered her Republican opponent, saying the local economy will suffer.

This is elementary school history, and we can now confirm what we all knew already: Trump would get waxed on Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?. America fought the war of 1812 against Britain, not the non-existent country of Canada at that point. Canada gained its independence from the United Kingdom on July 1st, 1867.

Now, to be fair to Trump, the British attack on the White House was in retaliation for our attack on York, Ontario (a British colony at the time), but that’s pretty much the only way that Canada is connected to this infamous act. To give Trump the full benefit of the doubt on this, it would require him to know enough about history to know the pretext of the burning of the White House, but not the actual action itself. Given that Trump doesn’t even know the words to God Bless America, I think it’s safe to say that this line was exactly as dumb and ill-informed as it sounds*.

But unfortunately he is that stupid.

The White House is about to snag a major victory in its war against Comey and the FBI

ABC News says the Department of Justice's internal watchdog has concluded that James Comey and Loretta Lynch, then the FBI director and the attorney general, acted improperly in their handling of the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.
The DOJ's inspector general, Michael Horowitz, characterized Comey's conduct as "insubordinate" in a draft report on the subject, one source told ABC News.
Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump's personal defense lawyer, has said Trump's team is "anxiously awaiting" the report because it believes the report will help make the case that senior FBI and DOJ leaders were biased against Trump.

A well written opinion about the baker in CO.....

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/07/opinion/supreme-court-masterpiece-anthony-kennedy.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage

the second, a commissioner observed that religion “has been used to justify all kinds of discrimination throughout history” and proceeded to label religion “one of the most despicable pieces of rhetoric that people can use to — to use their religion to hurt others.”

Following these hearings, the commission found that the baker’s refusal to serve his customers was an act of discrimination that violated state law. That decision was upheld by the Colorado Court of Appeals which, Justice Kennedy noted with disapproval, “did not mention those comments, much less express concern with their content.” Neither, he added, did the state itself disavow the comments in its presentation to the Supreme Court — a point Justice Kennedy had made when the case was argued six months ago. “For these reasons, the court cannot avoid the conclusion that these statements cast doubt on the fairness and impartiality of the commission’s adjudication,” Justice Kennedy wrote, adding that the commission “was neither tolerant nor respectful” of the baker’s religious beliefs. This “hostility” toward religion, the court held, violated the baker’s First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion.

The US is certainly having some unusual weather.....temps bouncing like a yo yo especially in the normally cold MN area....

After one of the coldest Aprils in U.S. history, last month delivered a stunning switch—the warmest May for the contiguous U.S. in records going back to 1895. May came in at 5.21°F above the 20th-century average, which beats out the Dust Bowl month of May 1934 (4.51°F above the 20th-century average). This is the third time in the past three years that a longtime monthly U.S. heat record has been eclipsed: December 2015 toppled a 1939 record, and June 2016 pushed out June 1933.

May’s warmth was remarkably well-distributed around the country. Whereas the nationally chilly April (13th-coldest on record) still had above-average warmth over the western U.S., every one of the Lower 48 states came in well above average for May—a rare feat. A total of 41 states had a top-ten-warmest May, and eight of those states had a record-warm May: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. The Oklahoma record is especially impressive given that western Oklahoma was near the epicenter of the devastating 1930s Dust Bowl.

Could the earth be heading for another record year???? Doubtful with the cold start. But a couple more record months like May, and my estimate could change.....BTW...GW is a hoax perpetrated by greedy scientists trying to maintain funding.....

huh.

interesting twist of logic. so now it's completely appropriate for the LGBTQWERTY community to "use religion" to discriminate those who devoutly practice said religion.

i see.

apparently this 'commissioner' would have us remove all religious protections and references to religion from our first amendment.

furthermore, this commissioner would have the relatively new phenomena of gay marriage overrule and override religious freedom which has been codified in our constitution since the nations founding.

and to top it all off, these two clowns could've selected a different baker from the fucking start and avoided the entire situation.

i think the colorado commissioners would be well served by practicing some of the tolerance that they love to preach.
