Since as early as April, Mueller's team has been asking witnesses in the Russia probe to turn over phones for agents to examine private conversations on WhatsApp, Confide, Signal and Dust, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Fearing a subpoena, the witnesses have complied with the request and have given over their phones, the sources said.
While it's unclear what Mueller has discovered, if anything, through this new request, investigators seem to be convinced that the apps could be a key to exposing conversations that weren't previously disclosed to them.
A spokesman for the special counsel declined to comment.So this story has become the tipping point for me. For the first time I am actually starting to feel a little pity for Robert Mueller and wonder if the man is still "all there". No longer even providing a basic pretense of conducting anything "other" than a witch hunt, the poor guy has obviously gone full on Trump Derangement Syndrome.
There may be multiple ways of looking at this story, but there are fundamental realities that we can all logically infer from this latest "move" on Mueller's part.
- That after over two years of investigating, they are still "looking" for evidence that they obviously still believe must exist, even if they cannot find it. Rejecting the obvious alternative that there was no "collusion" the Special Counsel has concluded that they must have been hiding it all through encrypted messaging software on their cell phones.
- Contrary to the logic of the source in this case, people are not worried about a subpoena, or else they wouldn't be turning over their phones willingly. The worst case end result of a subpoena would be that they would have to turn over their phones. It's logically impossible to be afraid of being force to do something that you otherwise are perfectly willing to do on your own. Again, the more logical explanations here is that witnesses are willingly turning over their phones, because they have nothing to hide.
- Lastly, if this story was worth it's salt, then the sources wouldn't just know that Mueller has requested and received cell phones, the source would also be able to tell us (at least in a generic sense) whether anything of value was found. The concept that the source knows everything "other" than what has been discovered, is quite literally the same thing as the source in this story admitting that nothing has actually been discovered. There is no history of this Special Counsel leaking half the story.
Let's be honest here folks. This is the special counsel's equivalent to throwing a Hail Mary, and leaking the story allows for the narrative that they are still moving forward. But ultimately both the action and the leak smell like a combination of desperation and a stubbornness. This entire thing has cost millions of dollars to the tax-payer, costs millions of dollars in attorney's fees to those involved, and has obviously invaded the privacy of nearly everyone touched.
At this point Mueller better have more than just a few process crimes to show for this intrusion. Otherwise we are witnessing a brutal misuse of investigative powers.

Probably 95%+ of police officers are not going to commit excessive force but some do. I know a lot of African American men. Almost every single one of them has been stopped for driving while black.
