On December 20, 1954, some 62 years before Donald Trump would be sworn in as president of the United States, Dorothy Martin and dozens of her followers crowded into her home in Chicago to await the apocalypse. The group believed that Martin, a housewife, had received a message from a planet named Clarion that the world would end in a great flood beginning at midnight, and that they, the faithful, would be rescued by an alien spacecraft.
Unbeknownst to the other “Seekers,” three of their group—Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter—were not there to be saved, but to observe. Psychologists from elite institutions, they had infiltrated the pseudo-cult to study Festinger’s recently elaborated theory of “cognitive dissonance.” The theory predicted that when people with strongly held beliefs were presented with contrary evidence, rather than change their minds they would seek comfort and “cognitive consonance” by convincing others to support their erroneous views.
Festinger’s prediction was right. When neither the apocalypse nor the UFO arrived, the group began proselytizing about how God had rewarded the Earth with salvation because of their vigil. His subsequent book, When Prophecy Fails, became a standard sociology reference for examining cognitive dissonance, religious prophecy, and cult-like behavior. What the three researchers probably never predicted, though, was that over half a century later Festinger’s theory would be applicable to roughly 25 percent of the population of the United States and one of its two major political parties. Nor could they have foreseen that the country’s salvation might well depend on its ability to deprogram the Trump cult’s acolytes—an effort that would require a level of sympathetic engagement on the part of nonbelievers that they have yet to display.
The very things responsible for the success of democratic transition are under near constant assault from Trump and his Republican abettors.
Democracy, especially liberal democracy, has always been dependent on the trust and belief of the self-governed. It is one thing to implement tangible measures to prevent the decay of bedrock institutions, and when it comes to voting rights, elections, the courts, and restraints on executive power, we know what these measures should look like. It’s another, far tougher thing to figure out how to maintain the legitimacy of these same institutions—and how to restore it once lost.
This says the Coldheartedtruth about where we are going and thoughts on how we need to restore the nation to the nation to the Republic for which it stands.

I fear that the growth of dictatorships that have been happening in places like Turkey and others is taking place here in the nation of the longest organized democratic government in history.
This is absolute truth about this situation today "The funny thing is that the people who continually looses their grip on reality and cannot control their rage are never-Trump liberals. Roger is exhibit A."
The theory predicted that when people with strongly held beliefs were presented with contrary evidence, rather than change their minds they would seek comfort and “cognitive consonance” by convincing others to support their erroneous views.
Despite increasingly apocalyptic warnings from U.N. officials, 2018 has seen a number of high-profile defeats for policies aimed at fighting global warming. Politicians and voters pushed back at attempts to raise energy prices as part of the climate crusade.
It started in June with election of Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Ontario residents overwhelmingly voted Ford’s conservative coalition into power on a platform that included axing the Canadian province’s cap-and-trade program.
Roughly ten thousand miles away in Australia another revolt was brewing. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull saw his power base crumble within days of failing to pass a bill aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Back in the U.S., $45 million was being pumped into the battle over a Washington state carbon tax ballot measure. Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee, who has 2020 presidential ambitions, supported the measure though refiners, but other opponents outspent carbon tax supporters.
The Inslee-backed measure called for taxing carbon dioxide emissions at $15 a ton in 2020, which would increase at $2 a year above the rate of inflation until the state meets its emissions goals
Can't imagine why people would react to a reduction of their standard of living based on a branch of "science" that is no better at prerdicting than astrology.

Can't imagine why you fell for such a thinly veiled opinion piece short on facts and heavy on BS....Gee, I get it cramps, you are a believer of BS.....as Alfred E Newman said....what, me worry??? It's not my problem and therefore we can ignore it....I guess those massive flooding and fire events were just coincidences.....so sad.....
IF, Socialism is a winning Ideal , then those who believe must be able to personally change the course of GW by billions of individual acts of using less, living on less and self depervation.
However, here not one single GW true believer does.

It’s already got people from all across this country who are going to be part of it, and together, we’re going to make change. And if people out there see it and want to be part of it, I hope they go to elizabethwarren.com and join us. Because this is how we’re going to build the movement that will change America.”
Of course it is to the willingful ignorants like yourself cramps....If you ever had a thought for yourself instead of being a brainwashed cultist who hates women and gays.....you might see it in the light of being factual....Like Rat hole yesterday who claimed arctic ice melting was causing sea level rise, your intellect is most damaged....LOLOLOLOLOL

well alky,
you post certainly doesn't lack irony. and a smattering of psychological projection as well.
let's take them one at a time, shall we?
voting rights -
you guys are the undisputed champs at blemishing the voting rights of American's everywhere. for years our elections have been plagued by fraud, outright theft, the dead voting, and in mexifornia's case, you legalized ballot harvesting in order to keep counting until you win your way to one party rule.
elections -
this is the one that drips with the most irony. your candidate went apeshit at the concept of trump challenging the result of an election. said it would be a threat to democracy or some such horse shit.
she lost. so what does she do? yep, challenges the result of a fair and square election, concocts a phony russia story to explain away her epic fail, and even advocates for a rule change to shitcan the electoral college. my goodness did she feel entitled or what?
the courts -
it was your hero, FDR, who originally tried to pack the USSC and elevated a klansman to the highest court. the left has a long and storied history of using the court to achieve what they could not secure at the ballot box. and your most shameful escapade of late was to attempt to destroy the life and career of a truly good and decent man, all because of the fear of losing your precious right to murder the unborn. THAT was the embodiment of everything that is evil.
restraints on executive power -
suddenly this is an issue? skeets was swinging around his phone and pen like a cowboy with a lasso and you cheered him on because you agreed with his policy attempts. you gave no consideration to the constitutionality of his actions. you even had members of the CBC in congress willing to grant the guy even MORE executive power, while simultaneously abdicating their own congressional power. skeets even managed to get his actions unanimously overturned by the USSC a dozen fucking times.
so you see alky, the whining coming from your friends at the new republic is at best a realization of YOUR actions on the left. and perhaps there's a new year's resolution in there somewhere addressing the points they've made. i've laid it out there for them. let's see if they can rise to the occasion.
Climate "science" that is no better at predicting than astrology.
cognitive dissonance
Alright Rog...
Explain this for us all?
Considering that cognitive dissonance is all about not being able to accept certain facts that interfere with someone's deeply held (political, religious, social, etc) beliefs...
What do the facts actually say?
Has our climate/warming models been at all accurate in predicting our planet's warming? Is there any manner to argue that the climate models from the 90's (go back and watch Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth) were not outlandishly wrong? Polar ices would be gone. Coastal areas would be underwater from a rise in the oceans. Our current temperatures should be considerably (as in multiple degrees) warmer than we are.
Your counter arguments will be to give us some meaningless and disproven statistic about 97% of scientists, or to assume/conclude that our "current" climate models are going to be more accurate going forward.
But none of that addresses the actual question as to whether or not our climate scientists have effectively predicted anything so far that has actually come true, much less predicted enough things accurately to be seen as having been vindicated by previous models?
Your beliefs that 97% of scientists are all in agreement (in spite of it being proven wrong) along with your blind faith that climate models "will be" more accurate moving forward... is a great example of ignoring the more relevant and pertinent facts (simply because those facts do not back your beliefs).
That choice to "deflect" the questions of past measurable accuracy of warming predictions, into... well anything "other" that the past measurable accuracy (or inaccuracy as it were) of warming predictions... is by the very definition....
Cognitive dissonance.
So unless you can come back with evidence of ice caps being gone, or parts of California washing into the ocean, or evidence that we are 4-5 degrees warmer today than we were in 1990...
You are just showing us your cognitive dissonance.
Of course it is to the willingful ignorants like yourself cramps....If you ever had a thought for yourself instead of being a brainwashed cultist who hates women and gays.
Cognitive dissonance anyone? Not being able to face facts is a terrible thing.
