Are Americans moving on the shutdown?

https://www.emerson.edu/sites/default/files/Files/Academics/ecp-national-pr.pdf
Voters are split on who to blame for the shutdown with 42% blaming the President, 36% blaming the Democrats in Congress, 6% blaming the Republicans in Congress, and 16% blaming everyone. About 1 in 4 voters (27%) have noticed a difference in their personal lives because of the shutdown.
Voters generally favor increasing enforcement of immigration laws at U.S. borders with 55% in favor and 24% opposed. The wall is not seen as a solution at the border for 41% of voters, while 59% believe it could be a solution. 26% believe it is the best solution while 33% believe it is one of several potential solutions for border security.
I am still a little surprised that more people are not blaming everyone. It takes two to tango, nothing can get done till both sided compromise, etc... It's logically counterintuitive to give anyone a pass in this situation.

But I think that goes the heart of the matter. People are more prone to be partisan and absolute when it comes to these things in 2019 than they were a few years ago. Nobody seems to want to concede an inch on their political opinions. They are stuck in the idea that they are correct and everyone else is wrong. The reason you are seeing six out of seven people taking sides is because of our heavy ability to allow cognitive dissonance and bias confirmation control our collective brain function.

All that being said, a 42-36 percent split is about as close to even as we have seen so far. Not sure if the President's address and subsequent proposal moved the needle, but I would offer that the closer these numbers are, the better chance we have of getting something done.

It really is quite simple. Everyone is smart except Donald J. Trump. That’s why they all are billionaires and all got elected President. Only Trump does not know what he is doing. Only Trump does not know how to negotiate with Vladimir Putin. Anderson Cooper knows how to stand up to Putin. The whole crowd at MSNBC does. All the journalists do.

They could not stand up to Matt Lauer at NBC. They could not stand up to Charlie Rose at CBS. They could not stand up to Mark Halperin at NBC. Nor up to Leon Wieseltier at the New Republic, nor Jann Wenner at Rolling Stone, nor Michael Oreskes at NPR, at the New York Times, or at the Associated Press. But — oh, wow! — can they ever stand up to Putin! Only Trump is incapable of negotiating with the Russian tyrant.

Remember the four years when Anderson Cooper was President of the United States? And before that — when the entire Washington Post editorial staff jointly were elected to be President? Remember? Neither do I.

The Seedier Media never have negotiated life and death, not corporate life and death, and not human life and death. They think they know how to negotiate, but they do not know how. They go to a college, are told by peers that they are smart, get some good grades, proceed to a graduate degree in journalism, and get hired as analysts. Now they are experts, ready to take on Putin and the Iranian Ayatollahs at age 30.

in other news, trump has given sanders the nod to suspend white house press briefings for a while...

"“Look, we’re in the business of getting information to the American people, not making stars out of people that want to become contributors on CNN,” she said. “We’re more than happy to take questions, but we think there should be a certain level of decorum and a certain level of honesty and responsibility that comes with that."

Republicans Losing Badly on Shutdown Once Again

“History is not a good predictor of President Trump. He defies convention in nearly every way. He has flouted most political norms and lived to tell the tale. To apply the lessons of the past to the politics of today is largely a fool’s errand,” the Washington Post reports.

“That said, there might be something to learn from the government shutdowns of 1995-96 and 2013.

“Republicans are in almost the same position that forced them to cave those two times (if not worse). That doesn’t mean they will give in again, but it does suggest that a dire set of circumstances has forced their hand before. To the extent they stick it out, it will be because of one thing: Trump’s stubbornness. And it risks coming at the type of political cost they very clearly feared in the past.”

The Dictator in the White Supremacist House is using intimidation against his enemies.

President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen is postponing his plan to testify before Congress in February because of concerns about his family's safety, according to Cohen's adviser Lanny Davis.

Davis cited "ongoing threats" to Cohen's family from Trump and the president's current personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in the decision to postpone his Feb. 7 appearance before the House Oversight Committee.

A spokesman for committee chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., as well as spokesmen for the White House and Giuliani, had no immediate comment.

Trump as recently as last week had urged people to "watch" Cohen's father-in-law, Fima Shusterman, who was placed on probation in the mid-1990s after pleading guilty in a case in which he was charged with conspiring to defraud the IRS.

Michael Cohen postpones House testimony, blames Trump "threats"

President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen said that he will postpone his scheduled Feb. 7 testimony before the House Oversight Committee due to "threats against his family from President Trump and Mr. Giuliani," as well as his cooperation in ongoing investigations, his lawyer said Wednesday.

The big picture: Cohen has been ordered to report to prison on March 6, leaving him less than 4 weeks to reschedule his testimony. House Democrats issued a statement on Jan. 13 warning Trump about obstructing congressional investigators and potential witness intimidation, following the president's tweets and comments about Cohen's father-in-law, Fima Shusterman.

Shusterman pleaded guilty in 1993 to federal income tax fraud related to his taxicab business in New York, and loaned at least $20 million to a major Chicago cab operator mentioned in the FBI warrants used to raid Cohen’s home, office and hotel room last April.

The full statement from Cohen's lawyer:

"Mr. Cohen volunteered to testify before the House Oversight Committee on February 7th. Due to ongoing threats against his family from President Trump and Mr. Giuliani, as recently as this weekend, as well as Mr. Cohen's continued cooperation with ongoing investigations, by advice of counsel, Mr. Cohen's appearance will be postponed to a later date. Mr. Cohen wishes to thank Chairman Cummings for allowing him to appear before the House Oversight Committee and looks forward to testifying at the appropriate time. This is a time where Mr. Cohen had to put his family and their safety first."

Dear Madam Speaker:

Thank you for your letter of January 3, 2019, sent to me after the long Shutdown began, inviting me to address the Nation on January 29th as to the State of the Union. As you know, I had already accepted your kind invitation, however, I then received another letter from you dated January 16th, 2019, wherein you expressed concerns regarding security during the State of the Union Address due to the Shutdown. Even prior to asking, I was contacted by the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Secret Service to explain that there would be absolutely no problem regarding security with respect to the event. They have since confirmed this publicly.

Accordingly, there are no security concerns regarding the State of the Union Address. Therefore, I will be honoring your invitation, and fulfilling my Constitutional duty, to deliver important information to the people and Congress of the United States of America regarding the State of our Union.

I look forward to seeing you on the evening on January 29th in the Chamber of the House of Representatives. It would be so very sad for our Country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location!

Sincerely,

Donald J. Trump

Stay tuned, James said Pelosi said...

It was unclear how Trump would address lawmakers Jan. 29, as the House and Senate must pass a concurrent resolution for a joint session of Congress to hear the president.

The sparring over the president’s annual address to Congress — a typically mundane event — comes as the partial federal government is in the midst of the longest shutdown in U.S. history, with 800,000 federal workers forced to go without pay and states scrambling to mitigate the impact on the poorest Americans.

Pelosi had sent a letter to Trump this month inviting him to deliver his annual address at the Capitol. But with Democrats and the White House at an impasse over Trump’s long-promised U.S.-Mexico border wall, Pelosi wrote to Trump again last week urging him to delay the speech, or deliver it in writing.

Pelosi, Trump send dueling letters as shutdown drags on
President Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) exchanged letters Jan. 16 and 17 that symbolize more political jabs in the long shutdown fight. (Monica Akhtar/The Washington Post)

Trump responded by denying Pelosi the use of a military plane for a trip to Afghanistan. Pelosi accused Trump of then publicizing her and other lawmakers’ plans to make the journey on a commercial flight, forcing them to abandon the trip. The White House has denied Pelosi’s claims.

Pelosi’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s letter. Asked about the State of the Union by reporters outside the House chamber Wednesday afternoon, Pelosi simply responded, “Stay tuned.”

ISN’T IT RICH? [UPDATED]
Ilhan Omar is a national embarrassment to Minnesota. The embarrassment continues with Omar’s tweet in the matter of the abused Covington Catholic high school students. Here is a quiz for students of defamation law in the context of the current controversy. How many times does Omar libel “the boys” with false statements of fact damaging their reputation in the brief tweet below? Omar, by the way, has some 450,000 followers on Twitter.

Follow-up question: is it too much to hope that she finds out the hard way?

-The boys were protesting a woman's right to choose & yelled “it’s not rape if you enjoy it”
-They were taunting 5 Black men before they surrounded Phillips and led racist chants
-Sandmann’s family hired a right wing PR firm to write his non-apology 🤦🏽‍♀️https://t.co/fG8AUCuDTr https://t.co/bOA6yFsIjW

Press That Sicced Mob On Teenagers Based On 10-Second Video Clip Unsure Why Some People Call Them 'Fake News'

U.S.—News outlets that incited an outraged internet mob against a group of Catholic school students based on a 10-second video clip, with no apparent attempt to fact-check or verify the information whatsoever, reported Monday that they are confused as to how some people could possibly consider them "fake news."

"I just don't get it," one CNN reporter said. "We worked really hard to fact-check the video a few days later and everything." He pointed out that without the media, no one would be around to misinform the public on important events, allowing people to quickly draw conclusions before all the facts are in. "What are people going to do---form their own conclusions after reviewing all the facts themselves? That'll never work."

A Washington Post journalist pointed to the news organization's slogan on the wall, "Democracy Dies in Darkness." "Our democracy would die without our hard work slanting the news to a particular worldview without bothering to check if our facts are accurate. It says so right there on the wall."

At publishing time, one reporter had proclaimed that while the story concerning Covington Catholic and the Native American protester was factually inaccurate, it was "morally right."

Trump’s Disapproval Hits Record High Amid Government Shutdown
Net approval matches presidential low for second time since shutdown began

January 23, 2019
57% of registered voters disapprove of Trump’s job performance; 40% approve.

46% of voters described the ongoing shutdown as a crisis, up 7 points from last week.

49% of voters mostly blame the president for the shutdown; 35% blame Democrats in Congress.

As the partial government shutdown entered its second month Monday, the share of voters disapproving of President Donald Trump’s job performance reached its highest point of his first two years in office.

According to the latest Morning Consult/Politico poll, conducted Jan. 18-22, 57 percent of registered voters disapprove of Trump’s job performance — more than any other survey in Trump’s two years in office — while 40 percent approve. The 17-percentage-point deficit matches two previous lows of the Trump presidency: in the first weekend of the shutdown, which began on Dec. 22, and in the wake of his comments regarding the fatal riots in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017.

Eighty-one percent of Republicans strongly or somewhat approve of Trump’s job performance in the national, online survey of 1,996 registered voters, while the same share of Democrats who strongly disapprove of him. Sixty percent of independent voters disapprove of Trump — the highest share among those voters since Trump became president.

The people are blaming the President, not Nancy.
