Two more Democrats concede that funding a wall might be necessary

www.politico.com/story/2019/01/29/border-wall-government-shutdown
House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries of New York told reporters Tuesday his party was “willing to support fencing where it makes sense, but it should be done in an evidence-based fashion.” And House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer wouldn’t rule the idea out in a discussion with reporters.
Drip, drip, drip...  Jon Tester from the Senate (who is part of the negotiating committee) and at least one other Democrat from that same committee are also on board with providing funding for some sort of border barrier. That would put a majority of the committee in favor of border wall funding.

Meanwhile, others from the Democratic Party (including some on the committee) are continuing to argue against any barrier funding what-so-ever. Pete Aguilar, for instance, is on record as saying that he could support the $5.7 billion for border security (or even more) as long as it does not involve any funding of sort of barrier.

I think that if there is an area where the Democrats can lose support for this, is to agree to much more money in border security, but hamstring the Department of Homeland Security in how they get to spend it.  At a certain point, it seems like a childish ploy to provide funding for border security, but tell the border security agency that they cannot spend a dime of it on what they call the "backbone" of their security efforts... because Democrats don't want to hand Trump any sort of political victory.

Perhaps the bill should simply include an amount for border security, and we could allow the Department of Homeland Security and the Border Security Agency more specifically to draw up their own plans for the best use of the funding. If Democrats are right, then the agency would not waste a single penny on an ineffective barrier.

Marc A. Thiessen:

"Trump should call [the Democrats'] bluff. He should go back to the experts at the Department of Homeland Security and ask them:

If Democrats refuse to give you the addition physical barriers you have said are essential to secure the border, what other funding would you need to make up for it?

How many extra border agents would you need in the absence of a wall? How many more canine units? How much more for improved coordination with state and local law enforcement in our border communities? How many more Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for interior enforcement? How much for underground sensors, radar, unmanned drones and fixed towers with infrared cameras? How much more advanced detection technology at our ports of entry? How many more portable scanners to detect smuggled narcotics, weapons and other dangerous materials? How much for construction of new ports of entry? How many more immigration judges? How much for employment eligibility verification? How much more in humanitarian assistance and medical support for those detained at the border? How many more detention beds and temporary housing units for migrant families? How much more for DNA testing to establish family relationships? How much to set up a new system that will allow Central American minors to apply for asylum in their home countries?

The total, he should tell the border professionals, can be far more than $5.7 billion. Just tell me what you need — the sky's the limit."

WE NEED A REAL PRESIDENT

Donald Trump has never really believed what his intelligence community tells him
Chris Cillizza

Trump slams intel chiefs: 'Extremely passive and naive'

MUST WATCH

(CNN)On Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted. About how his own intelligence community was wrong.

Tweeteth the President:
"The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran. They are wrong! When I became President Iran was making trouble all over the Middle East, and beyond. Since ending the terrible Iran Nuclear Deal, they are MUCH different, buta source of potential danger and conflict. They are testing Rockets (last week) and more, and are coming very close to the edge. There economy is now crashing, which is the only thing holding them back. Be careful of Iran. Perhaps Intelligence should go back to school!"

The context: In an appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, the country's top intelligence officials delivered their annual global threat assessment. In it -- and their answers to questions posed by members of the committee -- the collective intelligence community offered views on the threats posed by ISIS, North Korea and Iran that ran directly counter to Trump's public comments.

On Iran in particular, Trump said this in 2018 by means of explaining his decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal: "It is clear to me that we cannot prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement."

On Tuesday, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said this: "We do not believe Iran is currently undertaking the key activities we judge necessary to produce a nuclear device."

This is, of course, shocking. From Coats to CIA Director Gina Haspel to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Trump picked most of the people who make up the upper echelon of the intelligence community.

Presumably he did so because he trusted their judgment and knew that he needed experts in the field whose decades of experience could and would provide him the necessary context to make decisions on massive geopolitical issues.

To then not only disagree with the assessment of those experts -- the experts you chose! -- but do so publicly (in front of your 50-plus million Twitter followers) simply because their conclusions don't jibe with your own is absolutely unreal.

But because this is Trump, the surreal has become almost pedestrian. In fact, this isn't even the first time Trump has thrown intelligence experts under the bus because, well, he doesn't like what they say.

In an intelligence community assessment dated January 6, 2017, the heads of the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency concluded this:
"We assess Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election. Russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency. We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump."

Pretty cut and dry, right? The intelligence community concluded that interference in the 2016 election was directed by Putin and had the clear goal of helping Trump and hurting Hillary Clinton.

And yet, Trump chose not to heed those conclusions because, again, they didn't fit his feel for what had actually happened.

At a press conference following a summit with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, in 2018 -- and with Putin standing at a podium next to him -- Trump made his view plain about Russia's interference campaign: "I hold both countries responsible. I think that the United States has been foolish. I think we've all been foolish. ... And I think we're all to blame."

All to blame!

GOP Favorability Sinks
January 30, 2019

Gallup: “As the longest government shutdown in U.S. history came to an end, Gallup polling suggests that the Republican Party’s image has suffered more than the Democratic Party’s. The GOP’s favorability rating fell to 37% from 45% in September. At the same time, Americans’ favorable views of the Democratic Party remained stable at 45%.”

And he slammed people who called illegal immigrants undocumented workers.

“Illegal immigration is wrong, plain and simple. Until the American people are convinced that we will stop future flows of illegal immigration we will make no progress on dealing with the millions of illegals who are here now,” Schumer said.

here's an idea -

let's treat border security exactly like NY and VA are treating abortion.

let's kill the beaners right up to and after they've crossed the border...

“So in this particular example, if a beaner is illegally crossing the border, I can tell you exactly what would happen…the beaner would be allowed to cross. The beaner would be kept comfortable. The beaner would be resuscitated if that’s what the border patrol agents desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the agents to decide if the beaner should live.”

i think that's an acceptable compromise. treat an illegally crossing beaner like planned parenthood treats a baby.

let it cross, then kill it.

Suffolk County currently has about 300 confirmed members of the gang, along with another 200 associates identified, police said.

How many have been charged with crimes?
The situation is fluid. In January, 17 MS-13 members were arraigned in Nassau County and charged in connection with crimes that ranged from murder and drug trafficking to conspiracy and weapons possession. Swept up in the 21-count indictment was Miguel Angel Corea Diaz, the man who Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas identified as the leader of East Coast operations for the gang.

Suffolk police have made 330 arrests of 220 individuals since the Brentwood murders of two teenage girls in September 2016, according to District Attorney Timothy Sini, the county’s police commissioner until early January.

The government shutdown over the wall and his pathological lying behavior is causing the Republicans in ways that we haven't seen since 2010. And it is not going to get better soon.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell never wanted a government shutdown over funding (or lack thereof) for President Donald Trump's border wall. Shutdowns, McConnell argued, rarely work out politically for the party in power. "There is no education in the second kick of a mule," he was fond of telling anyone who asked.

Boy, was Mitch right.

In the wake of the 35-day government shutdown, a new Gallup Poll shows favorability for the Republican Party dipping to just 37% -- down from 45% when Gallup last polled the question in September 2018. (The Democratic favorable number was largely unchanged: 44% in September, 45% now.)

The poll was in the field from January 21-27. While the shutdown ended on January 25, Gallup said that 70% of its interviews for the poll were already done by the time the deal was reached.

The same poll showed that 50% believed Democrats in Congress acted "more responsibly" in the shutdown negotiations, while just 39% said Trump acted as the more responsible party.

You don't have to be a polling genius to understand what's going on here. The shutdown -- the longest in American history -- tarnished an already banged and battered Republican brand. No ifs, ands or butts about it.

The Point: Given the damage they've already sustained, the prospect of another government shutdown in 16 days has to terrify every single Republican looking toward 2020. And what's even more terrifying? No one -- not even Donald Trump himself -- knows what he will do when faced with another shutdown showdown.

-- Chris

I have to wonder when the Republicans are going to shout Your Fired!

In a Thursday morning tweetstorm, the president told Republican negotiators they are “wasting their time” because Democrats do not plan on providing money for a wall. He also falsely declared that the border wall is already being built and made the case that the high murder rate in Mexico has spurred migration to the United States.

“Democrats, despite all of the evidence, proof and Caravans coming, are not going to give money to build the DESPERATELY needed WALL. I’ve got you covered,” Trump tweeted. “Wall is already being built, I don’t expect much help!”
