WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of hate groups operating in the United States rose 7 percent to an all-time high last year, the Southern Poverty Law Center said on Wednesday, attributing the increase largely to anti-immigrant rhetoric from President Donald Trump.
The SPLC, which has tracked hate groups since 1971, found there were 1,020 operating in the United States in 2018, breaking the 1,018 record set in 2011. It marked the fourth consecutive year of growth.
The group blamed Trump, whose administration has focused on reducing illegal and legal immigration into the United States.
"The words and imagery coming out of the Trump administration and from Trump himself are heightening these fears," Heidi Beirich, director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, told reporters on a conference call. "These images of foreign scary invaders threatening diseases, massive refugee caravans coming from the south. This is fear-mongering."
The White House has repeatedly rejected charges of bias leveled at Trump, often citing the effects that a strong economy have had on minority communities. It did not respond to a request for comment on the report on Wednesday.
The SPLC defines hate groups as organizations with beliefs or practices that demonize a class of people. The number of groups has risen 30 percent since 2015 when Trump declared his presidential candidacy.

NASA has issued a grave warning that a monster chunk of the Antarctic Brunt Ice Shelf is dangerously close to snapping off from Antarctica.
Massive cracks will release a mammoth iceberg into the Atlantic Ocean. The frightening report comes amid recent NASA satellite imagery that has been charting the increasing cracks, which were first observed in 2016, reported The Express.
“Cracks growing across Antarctica's Brunt Ice Shelf are poised to release an iceberg with an area about twice the size of New York City,” said NASA, before adding, “It is not yet clear how the remaining ice shelf will respond following the break, posing an uncertain future for scientific infrastructure and a human presence on the shelf that was first established in 1955.”
Scientists are unsure just how damaging the breakoff will have on the rest of the ice shelf, but it could be devastating to the continent’s research stations and scientists.
The British Antarctic Survey, which discovered the hole in the ozone layer in 1985, is located on the Brunt Ice Shelf.
NASA released satellite images that show massive cracks running across the shelf.
In 2016, scientists observed one of the most troubling fissures, dubbed “Halloween Crack,” which is sliding eastward and increasing the amount of ice likely to fracture.
“This rocky formation impedes the flow of ice and causes pressure waves, crevasses and rifts to form at the surface,” said NASA.
