Recount in Kentucky House races ends in tie
Associated Press ADAM BEAM,Associated Press 10 hours ago

FILE - In this Jan. 8, 2019 file photo, incoming state Rep. Jim Glenn, D-Owensboro, is sworn in during a ceremony at the Kentucky House of Representatives in Frankfort, Ky. Election officials in Kentucky are reviewing ballots cast in a Kentucky House race where Glenn was elected by just one vote. The Democrat defeated Republican state Rep. DJ Johnson by one vote in November. But the Republican-controlled state legislature ordered a recount in the race after Johnson asked for it. (AP Photo/Timothy D. Easley, File)

OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) — A recount in a Kentucky state House race originally won by a Democrat by a single vote has ended in a tie after the local board of elections decided to open and count five absentee ballots that had previously been rejected. It's unclear what comes next.

Democrat Jim Glenn defeated former Republican state Rep. DJ Johnson on Election Day by a one-vote margin. Kentucky does not have automatic recounts, and the Kentucky State Board of Elections certified Glenn as the winner. He was sworn in on Jan. 5 and has an office and been assigned to committees.

But the Republican-controlled state legislature ordered a recount at Johnson's request, relying on a state law that allows candidates in legislative races to contest election results.

Saturday, the Daviess County Clerk's Office recounted more than 12,000 ballots by hand. Glenn emerged from that process ahead by three votes. But after a personal appeal from Johnson, the Daviess County Board of Elections — which consists of two Republicans and two Democrats — voted to give Johnson one of those votes back, putting him down by two.

The board then reviewed 17 absentee ballots that they had unanimously rejected on Election Day. This time, the board decided five of those ballots were legal, and opened them. Johnson received three of them, Glenn received one and one ballot was blank. That made the final results a tie, with each candidate receiving 6,323 votes.

The next step is for the Daviess County Clerk's Office to send a report to the Election Contest Board, a legislative panel of six Republicans and three Democrats which must decide what to do next and eventually give a report to the House of Representatives, which has the ultimate say in the matter. A state law indicates the board must choose the winner by drawing lots.

Doesn't look like there was any rule changing. The recount was ordered and executed in accordance to laws and rules already in place.

An alarming new study found that Antarctica is losing six times more ice each year than it was 40 years ago. Researchers believe the accelerated melt could cause sea levels to rise at a quicker rate than predicted in coming years.

"That's just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak," the study's lead author, Eric Rignot, who serves as a research scientist for both NASA and the University of California — Irvine, said in a university press release. "As the Antarctic ice sheet continues to melt away, we expect multi-meter sea level rise from Antarctica in the coming centuries."

From 1979 to 1989, Antarctic glaciers saw some 40 billion tons of ice melt each year. That amount jumped to 252 billion tons each year starting in 2009, the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found after observing data from 176 drainage basins over 18 regions.

(MORE: Easter Island's Statues Placed in 'Ridiculously Predictable' Locations)

Currently, the Antarctic ice sheet holds about 90 percent of the world's ice, and if it were all to melt, sea level would rise some 240 feet, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. If the rest of the glacier ice on Earth were to melt — a measly 25 feet on top of Antarctica's drastic total — every coastal city on the planet would flood.

It's not global warming it's man made climate change.

The U.S. Treasury reported that October’s deficit was $100 billion, an increase of $37 billion or 58% from a year ago. While one month may not be a trend, it puts the full-year deficit on a path from $779 billion in fiscal 2018 to $1 trillion in fiscal 2019 . And this is when the economy grew at a 3.5% annual rate in the September quarter .

October 2018’s deficit increased $37 billion from a year ago

After fiscal 2018’s deficit increased from $666 billion to $779 billion, the first month of fiscal 2019’s deficit increased from $63 billion to $100 billion. This was largely driven by increased spending in Medicare (up $28 billion) and defense ($9 billion). The jump in Medicare may be an anomaly, but it does look like this year’s deficit is on a path to break $1 trillion.

Not to be overlooked is the interest on debt increasing by $4 billion, which at the same monthly amount will add about $50 billion to the deficit in fiscal 2019. And should continue to grow.

Perhaps you should clarify what you really believe. Certainly the deficit over Trump's first four years is not going to reach 8 trillion dollars. Doesn't matter what credentials someone has, existing verifiable facts, simple math, and common sense takes precedence over something "an" economic stated (or didn't state - since you have yet to supply the source).

Considering the CBO tracks our budget year by year, and neither of the first two years are anywhere's near 1 trillion... it would require the budget deficit to jump to well over 3 trillion a year in both 2019 2020. There is no possible way that this happens.

The largest four single deficits ranged from 1.15 to 1.55 trillion (2009-2012) and were not close to a four year 8 trillion dollars.

The "final" deficit numbers from 2017 (Trump's first year) was 715 billion according to the CBO. 2018 final numbers are expected to be between 800 billions and 900 billion.

It's possible that Trump's full eight years would be around 8 trillion, but that wouldn't be exactly shocking (Obama's eight years were $7.75 trillion).

So why don't you just solidify what you actually meant, where you got your numbers, and then apologize for being wrong.

the theory has many surprising and counterintuitive consequences. Some of these are:

Relativity of simultaneity: Two events, simultaneous for one observer, may not be simultaneous for another observer if the observers are in relative motion.
Time dilation: Moving clocks are measured to tick more slowly than an observer's "stationary" clock.
Length contraction: Objects are measured to be shortened in the direction that they are moving with respect to the observer.
Maximum speed is finite: No physical object, message or field line can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum.
The effect of Gravity can only travel through space at the speed of light, not faster or instantaneously.
Mass–energy equivalence: E = mc2, energy and mass are equivalent and transmutable.
Relativistic mass, idea used by some researchers.[9]

If I was on a spaceship and traveling at the speed of light the clock onboard would run normally. The same clock on earth would run thousands of times faster. Time and speed are relative to the speed in a vacuum.

I studied this long before you were born with dementia.

So who's wrong here?

My math may be wrong....but the deficit spending under Obama blew your mind.

So despite a strong economy, the supply side theory you have believed ever since we met is a steaming pile of shit.

C.H. Truth said...

Rat...

what Kimberly Amadeo is doing is going all the way out to 2028 - when the debt is supposed to have increased to 23.683 Trillion. The 2017 actual national debt is 14.665 Trillion, which is a difference of a little over 9 trillion.

Meaning right now we are projected to add 9 trillion dollars over the deficit between the years 2018-2028. I suspect (the article she reference has no particular mention of 8.1 trillion) that she believe that the 2018 deficit will be around 900 billion, and thus the deficit will grow over the next 10 years by 8.1 trillion.

So the concept is a play on words. Suggesting that with Trumps first budgets that the 10 year projections would increase by 8.1 trillion.

The only thing that makes sense here is that she is using Trump's projection of "eliminating deficits" and comparing that suggestion with where we will be in 10 years, to come up with him increasing the debt by 8.1 trillion.

Bottom line... the article she posted show that the deficit will be at 17.946 trillion by the end of 2020 (which would be Trump's first four years) and the deficit waas 14.167 trillion when he took office.

By her own linked and referenced article the deficit is projected to increase by 3.779 trillion over that time (far less than the first four years of Obama's Presidency).

Commonsense said...

If I was on a spaceship and traveling at the speed of light

Einstein would be laughing his ass off at you since nothing with mass can travel at the speed of light. Mass becomes infinite.

But if you could travel at the speed of light your clock wouldn't run at all. It would forever be at a dead stop.

The time you put in to studying General Relativity is no more that it took to copy and paste from a physics web site.

My math may be wrong....but the deficit spending under Obama blew your mind.

well duh. it should've blown everyone's mind. for two reasons -

1) he doubled the fucker. doubled it. in only 8 years. accumulating more debt by himself than all of his predecessors COMBINED.

2) we have nothing to show for it. nothing. as in not a fucking thing.

So despite a strong economy, the supply side theory you have believed ever since we met is a steaming pile of shit.

it's not supply side's fault that we spend it faster than we take it in, alky.

civics 101 - all spending originates in the house. if budgets are to be balanced and debts/deficits are to actually be reduced, it all starts there. in the house.

fully two thirds of all spending is on entitlements. welfare. and welfare by every other name is still fucking welfare. all so our "leaders" can buy votes.

our debt just about exceeds the total wealth of the fucking planet. trump's wrong. we can't grow our way out of THAT. without entitlement reform we're just jerking off.

Commonsense said...

Roger without looking can say exactly what E = mc2 equation means?

C.H. Truth said...

btw...

Her own linked referenced article projects that the full eight years 2017-2024 would show an increase of 7.329 trillion - which would be a slowing of the 7.75 trillion we saw over the 8 years of Obama.

Everyone wishes (or should wish) that we could eliminate deficit spending. But the reality is that nobody had the political courage to do so, because doing so would require a massive overhaul to our entitlement programs.

Here is the funning thing: from Amadeo's article:

Instead, his budgets would add $8.3 trillion in four years. It would increase the U.S. debt to $25 trillion.

Trump's Fiscal Year 2019 budget projects the debt would increase $8.3 trillion during his first term. That's almost as much as Obama added in two terms while fighting a recession. Trump has not fulfilled his campaign promise to cut the debt. Instead, he's done the opposite.

So actually I was wrong. The article she references only goes to $23.8 trillion over the ten year period. So she is either factually wrong (which in this case is possible) - or she is arguing that the projections (which seem to match up to the CBO totals) are actually wrong... and she is "correcting them" with her analysis about how the tax cuts won't help because of the laffer curve, and how business investment won't happen or won't help, etc, etc, etc...

She is using her own expertise to override budget projects to the tune several trillion dollars.

But the reality is that there absolutely nothing in that article she references that actually suggests that the deficit will increase 8.1 trillion dollars in four years. Nada, nothing, zilch.

She is simply banking on people who read her being too stupid to know the difference or too lazy to actually fact check her statements to the sources.

"Roger AmickFebruary 1, 2019 at 5:44 AM

His budgets will add $8.3 trillion in four years.

In eight years it will increase by $16.6 trillion"

So Roger believes it explodes by $16.6
Trillion in 8 years of Trump.

Wrong again. A student with even a minimal amount of knowledge in Relativity could quote the definition in his sleep.

Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared,

You're a fraud.

Stopping 99% of illegal crossing is something that is never going to be economically plausible (i.e. it will cost more than any economic issue caused by immigrants).

Firstly lets think about how many soldiers it will take to realistically guard a stretch of land from people crossings - to make this answerable the following assumptions are made

we're talking about civilians crossing unarmed without 'tactical' or other assistance
all parts of the border can be realistically crossed and clear lines of sign are possible between posts
the military are guarding it independently and assistance from other agencies is limited to after the crossing has been stopped
soldiers are paid at some standard rate for their time guarding the boarder and are not expecting special pay for this service
The objective is to catch them alive and soldiers have the appropriate tools for this including communication equipment as required
normal border crossing can be manned by the normal agencies responsible for this with minimal military assistance
So your going to need 1-2 soldiers every 500 meters plus an equivalent number for night time with maybe more for key times and some for lunch time lets call this 5 soldiers every 500 meters

number of stations = (3145*1000)/500 = 6290

number of soldiers = 125800*5 = 31450

Willful Ignorance and cognitive dissonance are the reason why Scott loves the President.

He obviously has the same mental illness.

Some intelligence officials reportedly say that President Trump has displayed "willful ignorance" when presented with analysis from the intelligence community, according to Time Magazine.

The magazine reported Saturday, according to anonymous senior aides, that Trump allegedly has difficulty paying attention during briefings and that intelligence officials often work to keep Trump's attention by using visual aids, allegedly keeping points to two or three sentences and frequently repeating Trump's name and title.

The report details multiple instances in which Trump appeared to lack understanding on certain subjects.

In one briefing on South Asia, Trump allegedly claimed that Nepal and Bhutan were parts of India, Time reported, citing interviews with intelligence officers and congressional officials. Trump's advisers then reportedly informed him that Nepal is an independent nation and Bhutan is an independent kingdom.

The report comes after Trump clashed last week with intelligence leaders over their assessment of Iran's nuclear developments.

He said in a tweet on Wednesday that his intelligence leaders, who testified in front of the Senate that Iran is not seeking to develop its nuclear weapons capabilities, were "wrong" in their assessments.

"The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran. They are wrong!" Trump tweeted, adding in a subsequent tweet that the intelligence chiefs "should go back to school."

Trump then blamed the media for the rift between him and the intelligence community, claiming that the press mischaracterized the Senate testimony.

For the second straight year, the Treasury Department will have to borrow $1 trillion to pay for the government's growing budget deficit, a consequence of juiced government spending and smaller revenues as a result of the late 2017 tax cuts, Bloomberg reports.

The big picture: Treasury borrowing surpassed $1 trillion during President Obama's first term as government spending soared amid the stimulus to combat the 2008 financial crisis, but it has steadily declined in the years since, settling down to $519 billion in 2017 before nearly doubling last year.

Go deeper: U.S. borrowing spiked 84% in 2018 to nearly $1 trillion

Energy equals Mass x speed of light squared.

Mass does become increasingly massive with speed and when it reaches the speed of it becomes too massive to go away faster.

That's why the speed of light cannot be exceeded. Star Trek Gene Roddenberry used "warp drive" an impossible concept as far as we humans know yet.
