A Witch A Witch !!!

Poll: Half of Americans say Trump is victim of a 'witch hunt' as trust in Mueller erodes


Amid signs that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference may be near its conclusion, a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll finds that trust in Mueller has eroded and half of Americans agree with President Donald Trump's contention that he has been the victim of a "witch hunt". Support for the House of Representatives to seriously consider impeaching the president has dropped since last October by 10 percentage points, to 28 percent.

Who thinks it's a "witch hunt"?
  • 86% of Republicans  
  • 54% of Independents
  • 14% of Democrats

This is a little bit of a preemptive poll imho. The true test will be how Americans feel about the probe once the investigation is over and we find out what Mueller found (or didn't find). The left will only be able to confuse people with arguments about transparency for so long if there isn't definite direct evidence of collusion. 

Some, or should I say many,  are arguing that this poll is proof positive that the President's efforts to undermine Mueller have been successful. I might argue that the recent leaks/buzz/rumors of an anti-climactic report with no new allegations above and beyond the known indictments might be as much responsible.

It appears that the President is pivoting a little bit away from this being "personal" and is sort of invoking a Presidential standard where he argues that "no other President" should have to go through something like this. I think that is a good play. 

If Mueller's probe comes up empty, I would suspect we will see some calls for an overhaul of the whole Special Counsel laws and at least some transparent limitations on the independence of such a probe. 

Moreover, if it turns out that there were people working on this Special Counsel probe who were involved with the Steele dossier during the election, then we might be looking at a serious problem for the legitimacy of the entire probe. The entire idea of a special counsel is to remove any issues with conflicts of interest. That should certainly apply (with steroids) to who is involved in this sort of probe. You don't need to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire as it pertains to conflict.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled in favor of the Trump administration by deciding federal officials can detain immigrants at any time for possible deportation after they have served their time in the U.S. for other crimes.

The 5-4 decision reversed the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which said officials have to detain these immigrants immediately or they are exempt from ever being detained.

Justice Samuel Alito delivered the majority opinion for the court, and he was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh. Justices Steven Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan dissented.

RICHMOND —A federal appeals court seemed skeptical Tuesday that President Trump is illegally profiting from foreign and state government visitors at his luxury hotel in downtown Washington or that his financial gain comes at the expense of local competitors.

The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit was reviewing a novel case brought by the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia involving anti-corruption provisions in the emoluments clauses of the Constitution.

The once-obscure clauses were designed to prevent undue influence on government officials but have never been applied in court to a sitting president.

One judge, Dennis W. Shedd, suggested the president may actually be driving up business at other local hotels because of people who would be drawn to Washington to protest Trump’s policies and would not choose to stay at the president’s namesake hotel.

Another, Paul V. Niemeyer, noted the president had already stepped back from day-to-day management of the Trump International Hotel. Forcing the president to give up his financial interest would not remove the Trump name from the business, the judge said, and foreign dignitaries would still book rooms and events at the venue.




At the 4th Circuit, the names of the three judges randomly assigned to each panel are made public on the morning of an oral argument.

All three in the Trump hotel case were nominated to the bench by Republican presidents -- Niemeyer by President George H.W. Bush, Shedd by President George W. Bush and Quattlebaum by President Trump.

When the two Democratic attorney generals first greeted each other in the ornate, wood-paneled courtroom, they joked about the luck of the draw.

“Did you pick the panel?” Frosh joked, slapping his palm to his forehead in mock


If the judges do not rule in their favor, he said, they would consider appealing for rehearing by a full panel of the 4th Circuit and still would not be surprised to see the case reach the Supreme Court.

I understand more about the Constitution and our democratic republican form of democracy than you. The founding fathers feared the overreach of the executive branch. But that aside.

I would support a Constitutional amendment to repeal the electoral college system. That's highly unlikely.

But the states have the right to control how their electoral college votes are counted. If they pass laws that allegate their electoral college votes to the person who got the popular vote victory.

The Constitution has powers over state laws, and the states cannot pass laws that violate the Constitution. In my not so humble opinion that the state legislatures laws will be upheld by the Supreme Court.

If such laws were in effect for the 2016 election, in Pennsylvania ,Michigan and Wisconsin, we would not have this fucking disaster in the White House.

Just one or two problems with the electoral college compact.

1. There is no official finding as to what the certified popular vote is nation wide. The Constitution never set up a mechanism for a national election, it only envision state level elections. The only "popular vote" we know of is what the news media tells us and they are certainly not an official certification body that would be required by law.

2. The electors represent the voters of the state when voting for President and Vice President and not the will of the voters in any other state. The legislators cannot disenfranchise their own voters in favor of voter from any other state. There at a minimum be 14th amendment equal protection concerns, especially of only a relatively few states participate in the compact.

Just a couple of thing the genius with the strength A's in history and civics never considered.

The USSC will overturn the compact. Unamiously if it ever goes into effect.

However, I don't believe it will get that far. Once Trump wins the popular as well as the electoral vote in 2020, then liberals will forget the whole idea and dropped the compact.
