The post fact generation

So for people my age, two plus two will always equal four. It doesn't matter if a majority of the people in the class thought the answer was five, someone was offended by even numbers and demanded it be three, or if someone wrote a ten thousand word page essay explaining why the equation is just part of the larger burden that white society puts on people to force them into a box and that the answer four is a symbol of tyranny. For us, two plus two equalling four is a fact that simply will not change.

But we are starting to deal with the consequences of a new generation of Americans growing up who are being taught that pretty much any and all facts are subjective. There is a certainly rigidness about facts that simply rub these people wrong. Or perhaps, more to the point, there is a certain rigidness about facts that allows for the accusation that someone is wrong, when in fact they strongly believe it all should just be a matter of upbringing, opinion, or attitude.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made the argument the other day that "moderate" policies (aka realistic policies) should be discounted with little more than a "meh". Ocasio-Cortez argued that we need "ambitious acts of vision" (whatever that means) rather than the cynical policies of management. One can only assume that the $93 trillion dollar Green New Deal would be one of those "ambitious acts of vision" that Ocasio-Cortez is looking for.

But herein exposes the problem. Generally one might believe that with just a little bit of cursory research that the Green New Deal would be exposed as being impossible to pay for. In fact, it should be so obvious, that nobody would disagree. But in today's society all of this becomes more a matter of gamesmanship, salesmanship, and whether or not you can convince enough people that the obvious really isn't obvious. Ocasio-Cortez can convince the gullible that she is right by citing the crazy idea that our military loses trillions of dollars a year, or that we could somehow tax wealth to pay for this.

To some degree, these facts actually become "partisan".

Think about this for a second. Shouldn't the "fact" that $93 trillion cannot be paid for with military accounting errors or by taxing "wealth" be the overriding factor? Shouldn't we focus on what actually is factual and what is actually is real rather than focus on what we can "convince" people is factual or real? Shouldn't the adults on both sides be able to come to terms with obvious realities?

Because the real problem is that convincing enough people that two plus two is equal to five doesn't actually make it five. If you start using that premise in your statistical and mathematical formulas and attempt to formulate real engineering solutions with factually incorrect additions, you will fail. You will fail 100% of the time and those failures could have serious consequences.  Likewise, convincing people that we can pay for a $93 trillion program doesn't change the fact that it cannot and will not work in our tangible actual society. If you tried to enact this outrageous idea, society would fail.

The idea of "ambitious acts of vision" makes for great campaign strategies. Make promises. Convince people that the impossible is possible. Demand that others are simply lazy and cynical for not agreeing with you. Garner your political office.

But then what?

The hard part about this is really understanding whether someone like Ocasio-Cortez is dumb and naive enough to believe in what she is saying, or if she is smart enough to be simply taking advantage of a post fact generation that thrives on such stupidity and naivety. I lean towards the former, but I wouldn't discount the possibility of the latter.

And here comes the fact trump will drill the US into the deepest hole evah....1 trillion deficits forever!!!!

Trump to release $4.7 trillion budget with domestic cuts, billions for wall
President Trump’s proposal — which locks in $1 trillion in deficits, boosts spending and includes cuts to the social safety net — stands as a sharp challenge to Congress and the Democrats trying to unseat him.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

DOA

It's designed to satisfy his base.

Trump’s “Budget for a Better America” also includes dozens of spending cuts and policy overhauls that frame the early stages of the debate for the 2020 election. For example, Trump for the first time calls for cutting $845 billion from Medicare, the popular health care program for the elderly that in the past he had largely said he would protect.

His budget would also propose a major overhaul of Medicaid, the health care program for low-income Americans run jointly with states, by turning more power over to states. This would save $241 billion over 10 years.

Other agencies, particularly the Environmental Protection Agency, State Department, Transportation Department, and Interior Department, would see their budgets severely reduced.

The house will never let it come to a vote.

It's politics, nothing else.

The previous generation, the Greatest Generation, saved the world by sending Orwell’s rough men into the crucible of war in the interest of peace. My generation, the Baby Boomers, was to live the life purchased for us by the boys of Normandy, the Ardennes, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and other killing fields. White marble crosses and Stars of David in these places testify to the enormous price of that purchase. And live we did. What a party we threw ourselves. So, as I reflect on the goodness of the job my generation has done, I apologize. I apologize for it all.

I apologize that we Boomers bankrupted this great nation. We made all manner of promises to ourselves while leaving you the bill. Herbert Hoover once quipped that “blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt.” He was only partially right; it’s far worse than that. I’m not talking about $22 trillion in treasury debt or even the exponential rate at which it’s growing. I’m talking unfunded liabilities.

Were one to add today’s treasury debt to the unfunded Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid promises we’ve made to ourselves on your behalf — valued somewhere in the $120 to $200 trillion range depending on assumptions about discount rates, life expectancies, etc. — the total would exceed the market value of the United States of America. (I think that prior to pulling the most powerful lever in the world, every U.S. citizen should be made to write $120,000,000,000,000 in a box on his or her voter registration form.)

[...]

I don’t know which is more distressing. Both are personally tragic, economically wasteful, and manifest the worst angels of our nature. While some cite true and truly horrific historical wrongs needing correction, the majority of my minority students seem to view preferences and set-asides — not as compensation for past crimes, but as a post-modernist slur. My experience tells me that incalculable harm is being done intra-psychically and otherwise. I grieve for my black students, as bright and capable as any group I’ve ever taught, who feel themselves discriminated not against, but in favor of, because others feel they can’t otherwise compete.

So let’s review the bidding. My generation has spent its inheritance, beggared its kids, spiked the nation’s education infrastructure, and is at risk of substituting one type of racism for another in the interest of ending racism. On one side of the political ledger we’ve gifted the country Donald Trump, George W. Bush, Chris Christie and Rick Perry (today’s secretary of energy, for those of you without a scorecard). On the other, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid (he’s retired but he still deserves honorable mention), Blago (same although in prison) and Maxine Waters. And things are no better in the Old World.

No need to thank us, we’re going out happy, spending your hard-earned dollars on early-bird specials and Jazzy scooters. History, we know, will be kind. Paraphrasing that paragon of insight and clear thinking, Homer Simpson: “Our generation will never be useless. Future generations can always use us as a bad example!”

Roger

His proposed military spending would put us at 619 billions. Approximately 29 billion more than 2017, but still 80 billion LESS than we were spending in 2011. In other words, all Trump is doing is reversing the decline in Military spending that took place over Obama's second term.

This is hardly reckless spending...

8 billion on building a border barrier is approximately what we have averaged over the past several years going back to Bush being President. Again, hardly reckless spending.

between the two, we are looking at 38 billion.

And yes, Roger... he pays for the military increase with an offset decrease in non-defense military spending, which means discretionary outlays will remain fairly flat. They probably rise less than 10 billion for the fiscal year.

btw... discretionary outlays for 2017 were 137 billion short of where they were in 2011. At 6.3% of the GDP, it's the lowest percentage of spending since 2001.

So Trump cannot do much more to reduce spending at a discretionary level. It needs to come from mandatory spending.

moreover, the projected revenues continue to be record setting and according to the CBO will continue to grow at a consistent pace (in spite of the lies that the tax cuts reduced revenues).

So again...

Your answer is to not spent the 38 billion, and then not cut anywhere else, and then continue to blame the President for deficits?

Is that what you are arguing?

C.H. Truth said...

Moreover...

I would like to see more specifics on the Medicare and Medicaid arguments. Generally speaking when a liberal says that there are "cuts" to these programs, it actually means that there is a just a cut to amount of "increase" in spending. So I would be curious if we would actually be spending "less".

Moreover, it sounds to me as if the President is talking about transferring more of the costs to the States (which is what the medicare medicaid expansion called for anyways). So I would like to know how much of that is already built in and just being "blamed" on Trump.

His cutting $845 billion from Medicare

we'll see about that. i've already glanced at the breathless MSM reporting on the issue. and true to form they're freaking the fuck out just like they're supposed to.

C.H. Truth said...

The spending plan calls for a cut of nearly $1.5 trillion in Medicaid over 10 years and for $1.2 trillion to be added for a new “Market Based Health Care Grant” — that is, the block grants that would start in 2021. It also would eliminate funding for Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act has gone to about three dozen states over the past five years.

So the $845 amount is derived.

As explained in the article, most of the "literal" cuts are going towards reducing payments to doctors and "cutting out fraud". The former is nothing new (we've been doing it for years and it's always been a bad idea) and later is simply rhetoric.

There is a proposal that would limit the growth to the pace of inflation... which is still and "increase" but a decrease from the increase that otherwise would be proposed.

The rest is the difference between what Medicare is paying vs a "Health Care Grant" and the elimination of the medicare expansion.

Not that any of this will actually see the light of day. Neither chamber of Congress is going to pass any of this (other than the likely reduction of payments to doctors - which just insures that less doctors will take medicaid and medicare).

Nancy Pelosi raised more than a few eyebrows earlier this year when, the same day she became speaker, she appeared to open the door a crack to impeaching President Trump. Pelosi (D-Calif.) had been reluctant to entertain the idea, but now that the 2018 election was over and Democrats had the power to do it, maybe she was coming around?

Turns out, not so much. In an interview with The Washington Post Magazine, Pelosi says flatly that she opposes impeachment. Her comments are the strongest indication yet that Democratic leaders intend to let voters — and not impeachment hearings — decide this issue in 2020. But while that’s probably the safest and most politically prudent course, that doesn’t mean her party will accept it.

“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi told The Post. “This is news. I’m going to give you some news right now because I haven’t said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country.”

She added about Trump: “And he’s just not worth it.”

I don't often agree with Dick Cheney but...

A chummy discussion between Vice President Pence and former vice president Richard B. Cheney quickly turned into a vigorous back-and-forth over President Trump’s foreign policy at a private gathering Saturday, with Cheney comparing the president’s instincts to those of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, according to a transcript obtained by The Washington Post.

At the closed-door retreat hosted by the American Enterprise Institute in Sea Island, Ga., Cheney respectfully but repeatedly and firmly pressed Pence on a number of the president’s foreign policy moves. Cheney expressed concerns at such actions as taking a harder line toward U.S. allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and deciding to withdraw troops from Syria during what he fretted was “the middle of a phone call.”

Cheney also worried aloud to Pence that “we’re getting into a situation when our friends and allies around the world that we depend upon are going to lack confidence in us” and then offered a blunt criticism of the current administration’s response to foreign policy challenges.

“I worry that the bottom line of that kind of an approach is we have an administration that looks a lot more like Barack Obama than Ronald Reagan,” he said.

Cheney’s questions for Pence — which prompted Pence to joke about the lack of “softball” topics — provide a revealing glimpse into the churning and often strained debates inside the Republican Party, where longtime hawks such as Cheney have increasingly balked at Trump’s engagement with autocrats and his noninterventionist approach to U.S. military efforts in the Middle East.

Enter 63red Safe, an app which the Daily Beast reports is like Yelp, except for determining whether a business will protect customers from roving squads of antifa supersoldiers or let them dine while packing heat.

No, seriously, that’s pretty much what it does. The app (free on Google Play and Apple’s App Store) asks users to answer a handful of questions about local businesses, then marks it as either “safe” or “not safe” for conservatives based on the results.

“I’m trying to position it as an everyday ‘where can I go eat safely’ app,” 63red founder Scott Wallace told the Beast.
