Both vying for the same voters?

Maybe it should be titled "Beto and Butthead".

Another liberal dem now running for president. Seth Moulton, MA state rep and Iraq war vet. New flavor of the month.

Myballs said...

Actually not state rep. But at least he and OH rep Tim Ryan opposed pelosi for speaker. So both get points for that.

They represent the next generation of the Democratic party and quite possibly the next change in direction of the country.

The Democrats have to unite with the candidate to defeat Trump in the next election. Too many Bernie Sanders supporters, didn't even vote in the last election.

The necessity to defeat Trump will unite the country. If the candidate can provide a vision for the country, that can get the suburban women voters, and if he or she can find a way to get a significant percentage of the older, white men, Trump will have a tough time in the vital swing states.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Biden/Buttegieg, some Democrats like that picture.

I don't want Sanders or Biden on the ticket.

We don't need another baby boomer generation President.

Roger,

I think the Democrats should rely on their blue wall of industrial great lake states (where there is no need to visit or campaign), and then run tens of millions of dollars in spanish advertising in California to increase Hispanic output.

They should insult voters who might vote against them. Maybe something like "deplorable" but it has to be fresh and new, which is where someone like Beto or Buttigeig come into play. What insult to lay on people who might vote against them?

Then rely on the fact that media pollsters consistently show them 6-12 points ahead to make them feel overconfident.

Since cramps does not believe in evolution....the evolving D party is moving beyond an old white dying party and is moving towards the future instead of the past like trump and Lil Scotty are heading;.;;;;;Good!!! Progress is good, living in the past with hating gays women and non whites is passe and inclusion is the new black.....LOOL

USA TODAY Opinion Tom Nichols,USA TODAY Opinion 18 hours ago

The president of the United States, like all elected officials and public servants, swears to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies. But there is one responsibility the president must bear alone, and that is the obligation to act as the commander in chief, the guardian of our national security and the defender of our nation from malevolent foreign powers. The Mueller report makes clear that Donald Trump has failed miserably in this sacred obligation, and instead has traded his constitutional duty for his own safety.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s conclusions laid to rest some — but not all — of the legal issues surrounding the Russian attempts to subvert our democratic processes. As the report notes, Mueller’s team could not find a specific agreement between the Trump campaign and the Russian government to cooperate in an operation against American institutions.

For this, we should be grateful, but that’s about as far as the good news goes.

As a team of writers at Lawfare put it, Trump’s people “were aware the Russians sought to help them win. They welcomed that assistance. Instead of warning the American public, they devised a public relations and campaign strategy that sought to capitalize on Russia’s illicit assistance. In other words, the Russians and the Trump campaign shared a common goal, and each side worked to achieve that goal with basic knowledge of the other side’s intention. They just didn’t agree to work toward that goal together.”

The Democratic candidate doesn't need to spend millions in California, Oregon and Washington. They have to focus on getting the midwest swing states Trump won, and Florida.

Since the Trump base, is not going to abandon him, the Democratic candidate has to concentrate on the states Clinton lost.

The Democrats candidate have to be positive, no anti-Trump brigade. Clinton lost because too many people didn't like her.

I think the demographics is destiny argument pretty much got blown out of the water in 2016.

The election that made Nancy Pelosi speaker of the house? That got millions more votes nationwide? That election?

I don't think they'll like Warren any better nor any of the other 20 dwarfs running for president.

Add to that a booming economy, low unemployment, and rising wages you would have to be crazy to change course.

Trump is in a good if not better position than Obama was when he won his second term.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The Democrats won the popular vote by more than 8.6 million votes in 2018.

Well, other than the mainstream media hates Trump with the white hot passion of a thousand burning suns, and would deem it an honor to have licked the bottom of Obama's dress loafers.

The election that made Nancy Pelosi speaker of the house?

Wasn't really all that extraordinary given that the party in power always lose seats in the midterm.

However, I suspect a great many people have buyers remorse now.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

I don't think that the good economy will be the major issue in this election.

We don't know how to economy will be doing almost 1.5 years away.

We don't need another baby boomer generation President.

The Republican party is going to try and label the Democrat as the party of socialism.

*The major of Americans want a higher minimum wage.

*The majority of Americans want health care for all.

*The majority of Americans want access to higher education without crippling debt.

The Republicans will be calling them socialism.

The Democratic candidate has to be positive about the future and not fight the past battles.

Commonsense said...

The Democrats won the popular vote by more than 8.6 million votes in 2018.

By spending money and driving turnout in states Clinton was going to win anyway while they ignored the states that were must wins.

If you are arguing the Democrats were strategically stupid, you have a good case.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The wild card is the possibilty of a primary election opponent in the Republican party.

Historically speaking, when the incumbent President faces significant opposition from within the party, the incumbent has lost reelection.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Hillary Clinton was strategically stupid in 2016.

PA
MI
WI

72,000 votes lost the election.

Don't forget that Arizona, is now a swing state, IMO.

You're delusional. The economy is always a major issue if not the defining issue in presidential elections.

And sure, American want health care for all until they actually find out what that means. Then, not so much,

Nor do I particularly care to subsidize some gender studies major partying.

anonymous said...

By spending money and driving turnout in states

So they should be ignored???? Sure helped turn the congress blue by almost eliminating R's in both Ca and NJ!!!! BTW...what did Clinton have to do with 2018? I recall she lost in 2016. It sure showed us the potential of 2020!!!!!

C.H. Truth said...

So Roger...

Your belief is that Americans would rather have free stuff than have a good job in a great economy so that they can live a good lifestyle and pay for it themselves?

I think that is the major difference between conservatives and liberals, and why liberalism is constantly looking to attract the "next" generation. Boomers and now Generation X voters have grown up and realize that there is never any "free lunch". Everything comes with a price tag. They are much more satisfied earning their own way and paying for things with their own money, than they are wanting someone else to give them more stuff.

Why would you really want to build a Party around the concept that you have to give away free stuff to the people who don't want to work for themselves? What sort of people does that "really" appeal to?

Like when Carter won in '68?

Idiot

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

In a normal election year, the economy is always a major issue if not the defining issue.

Donald Trump is the President and his base may be dropping off a little bit. The Mueller report is the wild card.

Most Americans support Obamacare. Personally I don't want Medicare for all. But we need to get health care for everyone.

The Democratic candidate can't let the Republicans define the issues. He or she can win a significant electoral college victory, if they define the issues.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Carter was not the incumbent President, jackass.

Bill Weld entering the Republican primary election, could very well, elect the Democratic candidate.

Going back to 1968, when LBJ had opposition, he declined to accept the nomination of my party. Carter was elected.

Four years later, Carter had opposition and Reagan won, then carried 49 states.

George H.W Bush had opposition, and Bill Clinton beat him.

George W Bush didn't have any opposition, and beat Kerry in a landslide!😭

Biden and Bernie are not going to get the nomination, the generational change is going to elect Harris, Buttigeig, or one of several others.

Gerald Ford was the incumbent President in 76, he faced significant opposition in the primaries, and George Wallace won several states. Carter won.

In 1980, Carter did have opposition in the party and Reagan won, and in 1984, who did not have any opposition, won 49 states.

If Harris doesn't win in the now early primary state and her home state of California she has no chance to win the dem nomination. Currently she is polling third behind Sanders and Biden in that state. She has no chance of winning in the electoral college.

Buttigeig may be qualified to be ambassador to Norway. He is the current flavor of the day but very doubtful as a nationwide candidate. Will be interesting how he stands after the dems hit 31 candidates.

Trump has taken many blows below the belt but will be swinging back hard with the IG report and Barr finally looking into Obama era corruption that carried into the Trump presidency. He has to be a prohibitive favorite right now, but who knows what the future brings.

I'm looking forward to hear Mueller answer Republican questions under oath when the dems bring him in to testify. They may wish they had moved on.

I don't think that Arthur Weld, or is it Henry Weld? I forget... it really going to pose a real challenge.

Carter was challenged by Ted Kennedy. Kennedy won several states. George Bush was challenged by Pat Buchanan. Buchanan didn't win any states, but was a legitimate threat.

Seriously, short of Democrats crossing over, and Bill Krystol, who is going to vote for Weld?

Calling him opposition is stretching it a bit. He'll be gone by next Easter, if not Lent.

Buchanan wasn't the reason Bush lost the election. It was Ross Perot.

Another one entered the race. Another veteran.

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) announced his 2020 presidential campaign early Monday, becoming the 20th candidate seeking the Democratic nomination.

Moulton, who emerged a leader of the Democrats challenging Rep. Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) path to the Speakership last fall, said in a video that he is running because "we have to beat Donald Trump, and I want us to beat Donald Trump because I love this country."

The former Marine's campaign platform includes a focus on gun control, national security and addressing climate change.

"Decades of division and corruption have broken our democracy and robbed Americans of their voice," Moulton said in his announcement video. "It's all led to an administration that's turned away from our values and is shredding our moral authority."

Commonsense said...

It's almost like you have to say "so what"?

One thing I will says is I don't think there enough money from Democrat donors to go around.

And the big Democrat donors are not likely to be sympathetic to Socialism.

Commonsense said...

Ok
But prove me wrong about the incumbents who lost due to primary opposition

There have been only two incumbents that have lost re-election since WWII.

Carter was the only one with a significant challenge from within his own party and that is because he was already a weak president.
Bush lost because he had a significant third party challenger they took nominally Republican votes away from him. And he had the ill fortune of running during an economic recession.

So no, primary opposition is not the cause of incumbents losing, as I said if you get significant opposition in a primary you are already weakened.

What they had in common was they were running during a sluggish economy and that's why they lost.

Yeah, we know...

It was the fact that Papadapoulos heard something and then told someone else something... but never actually was provided or provided any evidence of anything. All before he technically even joined the Trump campaign. .

Yeah, that's it!
That's the ticket!!

That game of telephone started four investigations including a 22 month $30 million Special Counsel!
