- Carter Page was put under surveillance via a FISA warrant after the FBI swore that they had verified evidence that led them to believe he was working with foreign agents to commit criminal actions. He obviously wasn't.
- George Papadopoulos was approached by an FBI informant named Steven Halper. Halper was assigned by the FBI to specifically gather information from the Trump campaign.
- Sam Clovis (another campaign aid) was also approached by the same FBI informant Steven Halper.
Neither Page or Clovis (or anyone else for that matter) were ever charged with anything having to do with conspiring or coordinating with Russians. Papadopoulos was charged with a process crime of giving misleading information regarding the timing of his employment with the Trump campaign and given less than a month in jail.
Was there actually good reason to believe that the Trump campaign was "conspiring" with the Russians, and would anyone with any sense believe that they would engage these three particular players if they were?
Also keep in mind that by putting these people under warrant and investigation, it allows them to gather pheriprial information. They could (because of a FISA warrant) check any and all of Page's emails, possibly giving them "legal" access into the Trump campaign email system.
Perhaps it's all on the up and up. It's possible that our DOJ and FBI (under Obama) was simply incompetent and downright stupid, rather than cleverly corrupt. But with all of the rest of the proven bias, and known corruption uncovered by the I.G. I wouldn't want to just "sweep this under the rug" and give them that benefit of the doubt.
Obviously they didn't provide anyone any benefits of any doubts themselves.
