History is burning

Smoke and flames rise during a fire at the landmark Notre Dame Cathedral in central Paris on April 15, 2019, potentially involving renovation works being carried out at the site, the fire service said.
The roof of Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral collapsed Monday as a massive fire ripped through the structure.
The city's mayor and firefighters warned people to stay away from the area. There have been no confirmed deaths, according to Paris police, while a French government official said no injuries had yet been reported.
President Emmanuel Macron will be going to the scene of the fire, according to an Elysee official. He mourned the landmark in a tweet.

Paris Mayor Anne Hildago and firefighters warned people to stay away from the area. There have been no confirmed deaths, according to Paris police, while a French government official said no injuries had yet been reported.

@realDonaldTrump
So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!

Maybe he can throw them paper towels to clean up their tears.

Large fire spread quickly.

Or as ilyan omar would put it, something is happening to some church in Europe.

The Paris fire chief just informed the government they can't save Nortre Dame

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The windows are put together with lead. It melts quickly and they are lost forever.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The fire department said that they can't use overhead tankers, because it would destroy the structures.

Glad I got a chance to see it twice before this happened. Almost made me want to join a church. But it's a shame for everyone else who hasn't been there. Devastating day for the whole world.

It was made of oak wood

Sad very sad....at least I got a chance to see it this past spring....an amazing feeling when entering the cathedral You felt embrace by God and the souls of the many that built it....Truly a loss for the world and puts into perspective how menial trump and US politics are....I'm sure the second guessing will start now and how could they not save the building.....but the surrounding area was built in a different era.....and difficult to get around with big equipment....no luxury of time or building due to its age.....!!! As ballz pointed out with his stupid remark.....can't fix idiots....!!!!

Commonsense said...

ironically, the structures were destroyed anyway.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The 1st responders were trying to save everything.

Even the Nazi's didn't destroy this structure

Paris is on my bucket list. I am so sad.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

construction scaffolding is still holding up.

But I bet that the construction workers accidentally started the fire.

Commonsense said...

A lot of people were asking the same thing. A it was it was almost an hour before anyone say water being poured on the fire.

The good news is they save all of the removable art work. Not sure about the written records dating back to the 11th century.

Commonsense said...

But I bet that the construction workers accidentally started the fire.

We'll see. The fire spread awfully fast for an accident.

It’s 850 yrs old CS

You’d think with France’s proximity to Germany they’d be better at fire suppression

Such an idiot....maybe he could have thrown wet paper towels from the street!!!! The fire spread because the wooden structure is older than the US!!! Nice to see cramps is also an expert on fires and how they spread......sad so much expertise coming from the peanut gallery of the WH and coral gables.....

anonymous said...

You’d think with France’s proximity to Germany they’d be better at fire suppression

And many people would think you lost your mind....but I would not....

Commonsense said...

I'll bet you they eschewed a fire suppression system because it would have took away from the aesthetics of the building.

Commonsense said...

Too early to tell if it was an accident or arson.

But I wouldn't be awfully surprised if it was arson.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The main structure has been saved!

Originally built in 1161.

Almost 300 years before Columbus in 1492.

Which would prove what cramps. Hindsight is 20/20? ....eschewed ????? LOL I'd be willing to bet you heard that somewhere else....

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The structure was built largely with oak wood, 850 years ago. The wood would burn incredibly quickly.

Alky level construction work. Set the damn thing a blaze.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The construction work includes cutting steel with torches sometimes.

"The faithful of Paris sung hymns as France’s Notre Dame Cathedral was engulfed in flames.

Media outlets have shared footage of crowds gathered in prayer and song, standing in vigil as the roof and spire collapsed amidst flames of Our Lady of Paris, while fire began to overtake the rest of the famous Gothic twelfth-century cathedral."

Praying does a lot of good.

Wow an American president frustrated and saying something he knows nothing about. Kind of like Obaunghole musing on the gulf oil spill

- President Barack Obama has privately expressed his frustration to senior government officials that the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has not been stopped and has made clear his feelings about it.

“Plug the damn hole,” he has told them, according to aides.

No, he didn't. It was a reasonable question most laymen were asking. As it turned out it might have a viable last chance option.

One tiny bit of good news in the tragedy. "For the last half-decade or so, an architectural historian named Andrew Tallon worked with laser scanners to capture the entirety of the cathedral’s interior and exterior in meticulous 3D point clouds."
