WASHINGTON — President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions.
As late as 7 p.m. Thursday, military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations.
Officials said the president had initially approved attacks on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries.
The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off, a senior administration official said. Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down, the official said.!!!

The European and GFS forecast models are in strong agreement on the development of a blocking ridge of high pressure from near Greenland into western Europe. The setup is related to a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) that has prevailed since late April and that could intensify next week. Often a blocking high over Greenland leads to cooler, cloudier conditions in western Europe, but in this case an upper-level trough is positioned over the eastern Atlantic, west of France. The Greenland high will arc around and to the north of the trough and into western Europe. This topsy-turvy pattern, known as a rex block, can last for a number of days.

“In a negative NAO, it depends where the trough over the Atlantic sits,” explains Leon Brown, head of global meteorological operations for IBM Watson Media and Weather. “A little further west and you get a plume of heat from Africa to western Europe (as next week), or a little more to the east and the heat keeps across central and eastern Europe with northwest Europe much cooler. There can be a sharp divide, especially for western Iberia, France and the U.K.”
Brown adds: “Next week is interesting since the upper trough may become a slow moving cut-off low for a few days. If so we may see several plumes or heat episodes moving from Iberia to France and reaching the U.K. to southern Scandinavia. These plumes normally don't last that long though over the west and destabilise with some severe storms and local flash floods as the upper trough moves eastwards. Next week may last a bit longer and perhaps until the weekend, by which time the heat would have time to build and break some June records!"

Appearing on CNN’s “New Day” on the morning after President Donald Trump aborted a military attack on Iran, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Forces Committee called the president Iran policies incoherent and said the country was in no way prepared to go to war with a Pentagon in “chaos.”
Speaking with host John Berman, Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) said he was pleased that the president aborted the attack on Iran and added that there needs to be way more diplomacy before the United States takes the fateful step of getting into another war in the Iran.
“So as of 7:00 last night, the planes were in the air,” Berman detailed. “As of 8:00, the attack was called off. What message does that send to you and to the world about the coherence of the Trump administration’s policies toward Iran?”
“I don’t think there’s any coherence,” Peters replied. “We don’t have a strategy to deal with this escalation from the administration. Of course the Department of Defense is in chaos right now — we have an acting secretary going to another acting secretary and many of the key positions aren’t filled.”
“It’s difficult to engage in these kinds of actions if you don’t have coordinating leadership and permanent leadership,” he added. “You can’t do it when the department is in chaos and you’re not engaging your allies.”

The Senate needs to act now to prevent a major military confrontation with Iran.

With tensions escalating, and American carriers and bombers heading to the Middle East under Trump and Bolton's watch, the danger of this war cabinet forcing a conflict with Iran has never been higher.
Senators from both parties are working to include an amendment in the National Defense Reauthorization Act (NDAA) -- which will likely be voted on in the coming days -- that would deny President Trump funding for a war with Iran without congressional approval.
The Udall-Kaine amendment is the best chance the Senate has of halting Trump's march to war. Every senator needs to be hearing from their constituents right now that the amendment MUST be included in the NDAA.
