Battleground state polls show another nailbiter!

The Memo: Trump's battleground ratings sound warning for Democrats
New battleground state polls sent tremors through Democratic circles Monday, underlining that President Trump has a fighting chance of reelection despite his mediocre national standing.
The polls, from The New York Times and Siena College, tested the three leading Democratic 2020 candidates — former Vice President Joe Biden and Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) — against Trump in the six states that Trump carried by the narrowest margins in 2016. Those states are Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The polls showed Warren defeating Trump only in Arizona, Sanders doing so in three of the states and Biden doing so in four. All of the Democrats lost to Trump in North Carolina, which President Obama carried narrowly in 2008. Even in Biden’s case the results were hardly conclusive. His edge was 5 points in Arizona and smaller everywhere else: 3 points in both Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and just 2 points in Florida.

This is actually one of several polls showing these battleground states as pretty much toss ups at this point. You can tie the fact that impeachment is significantly underwater in these states as proof positive that the Democrat strategy of relying on "national polls" is damaging and could be fatal.

I am not much for "predictions" anymore, but if you put a gun to my head, I would say that for a Democrat to beat Trump in the Electoral College, that person might have to win nationally by upwards of 4-5 percent. Imagine the howling if Trump loses somewhere in the vicinity of 50-46 and still wins the electoral college (possibly by more than 2016).

For one, Trump will have a record amount of money to spend. We also know that Trump is not going to waste that money buying Spanish speaking ads in the State of California. He's going to spend it all where it matters, while conceding places like California, New York and other large liberal population centers. He might lose California and New York by eight or nine million votes, and not blink an eye (and why would he).

Moreover, while your liberal lame stream media is the only voice in town in other places (helping the Democrat run up the score in safe states, and possibly closing the gaps in lost states) - their voice will not be as resounding in the states that Trump will campaign in. This also significantly increases the chances that a Democrat will win the popular vote (again) and lose the electoral college.

But let's be clear here. Everyone understands the rules and everyone understands that popular vote doesn't matter. There should NOT be (although there will be) much wailing and complaining if Trump loses the popular vote again, but is still elected President!

Even though the 2016 election breakdown was 36D/33R/31I, the most recent Fox poll is 49% Dem. And even with that obvious poll engineering, the pollsters couldn't get a majority in favor of impeachment.

Of note: only 38% of indies support impeachment.

Sondland Updates Impeachment Testimony

“A critical witness in the impeachment inquiry offered Congress substantial NEW testimony this week, revealing that he told a top Ukrainian official that the country likely WOULD NOT receive American military aid UNLESS it publicly committed to investigations President Trump wanted,” the New York Times reports.

“The disclosure from Gordon Sondland, the United States ambassador to the European Union, in four new pages of sworn testimony released on Tuesday, confirmed his involvement in essentially laying out a QUID PRO QUO to Ukraine that he had previously not acknowledged.”

Politico:
“The acknowledgment of a potential quid pro quo is an explosive shift that threatens to UPEND claims by Trump allies that military aid was not used as a bludgeon to advance Trump’s domestic political interests.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Predictions this far out there don't mean much.

If the Democrats get the impeachment proceedings in public, sooner than the President desires, the swing states will probably look better for the Democratic candidate, of course depending upon who gets the nomination.

C.H. Truth said...

Sorry Denny...

Nobody (currently against impeachment) is changing their minds. In fact the most recent FOX news poll shows a four point drop in impeachment support from three weeks ago. I suspect that as things move forward that more and more people will realize that this is nonsense.

Certainly people care more about the great economic news. Markets hitting all time highs, the economy still chugging along, and the jobs report was much better than most people expected.

People care way more about their own pocketbooks, than silly impeachment hearings over perfectly legal things that liberals feel are "improper".

So that is why Trump's approvals are going up (not down) and why I suspect he will continue to be more popular in the battleground states.

WASHINGTON — As President Trump’s first C.I.A. director, Mike Pompeo was briefed by agency officials on the extensive evidence — including American intercepts of conversations between participants — showing that Russian hackers working for the government of Vladimir V. Putin had interfered in the 2016 American presidential campaign. In May 2017, Mr. Pompeo testified in a Senate hearing that he stood by that conclusion.

Two and a half years later, Mr. Pompeo seems to have changed his mind. As Mr. Trump’s second secretary of state, he now supports an investigation into a discredited, partisan theory that Ukraine, not Russia, attacked the Democratic National Committee, which Mr. Trump wants to use to make the case that he was elected without Moscow’s help. “Inquiries with respect to that are completely important,” Mr. Pompeo said last month. “I think everyone recognizes that governments have an obligation — indeed, a duty — to ensure that elections happen with integrity, without interference from any government, whether that’s the Ukrainian government or any other.”

Mr. Pompeo’s spreading of a false narrative at the heart of the Ukraine scandal is the most striking example of how he has fallen off the tightrope he has traversed for the past 18 months: demonstrating loyalty to the president while insisting to others he was pursuing a traditional, conservative foreign policy. Mr. Pompeo, 55, now finds himself at the most perilous moment of his political life as veteran diplomats testify to Congress that Mr. Trump and his allies hijacked Ukraine policy for political gain — and as congressional investigators look into what Mr. Pompeo knew of the machinations of Mr. Trump and Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer.

OOOOPS!!!!!

ASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump's move last year to tax imported steel triggered jeers but also cheers. Its goal — to raise steel prices — threatened to hurt the legions of U.S. manufacturers that depend on steel.

But at least it would benefit U.S. steel companies and the Americans who work for them. That was the idea, anyway.

Yet Trump's 25% tariffs, it turns out, have done little for the people they were supposed to help. After enjoying a brief tariff-induced sugar high last year, American steelmakers are reeling. Steel prices and company earnings have sunk. Investors have dumped their stocks.

The industry has added just 1,800 jobs since February 2018, the month before the tariffs took effect. That's a mere rounding error in a job market of 152 million and over a period when U.S. companies overall added nearly 4 million workers. Steelmakers employ 10,000 fewer people than they did five years ago.

"Even with these very high tariffs, the industry has not been able to take advantage," said Christine McDaniel, a senior research fellow at Mercatus Center, an economic think tank at George Mason University.

Trump's pledge to rejuvenate the steel industry had helped him win votes in the 2016 election in such key states as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. His inability to deliver a boom for the industry raises doubts about how he'll fare in those states in 2020. Voters will be weighing whether to move on from Trump or reward him for at least taking the fight to foreign steel mills.

Sherrod Brown Says GOP Senators Admit Trump Is a Racist
November 5, 2019 at 5:33 pm EST

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) told the Late Show with Stephen Colbert that his Republican colleagues in the Senate privately admit that President Trump is “racist” and “misogynist.”

Said Brown: “Most Republican senators, when you talk to them individually, quietly, will acknowledge that Trump is a racist. They’ll acknowledge that Trump is a misogynist, they’ll acknowledge he has trouble telling the truth.”

He added: “It’s pretty clear that Republican senators, I mean they’re not going to go down as profiles in courage. It’s pretty clear that they like the tax cuts that Trump gave them. They like the attacks on the environment and on labor rights, and they like the young right-wing judges. And they’re all scared of their base. They’re all scared of a Republican primary from a Trump supporter that could take them out.”

Days before the July 25 call, Volker warned Giuliani that the Biden-Ukraine narrative was not credible.
Volker transcript,

Page 203: “And I said to Rudy in that breakfast the first time we sat down to talk that it is simply not credible to me that Joe Biden would be influenced in his duties as vice president by money or things for his son or anything like that. I’ve known him a long time, he’s a person of integrity, and that’s not credible.”

According to Mr. Volker, he had breakfast with Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Giuliani’s associate Lev Parnas at the Trump Hotel six days before the phone call between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky. During their meeting, Mr. Volker tried to convince Mr. Giuliani that the allegations against Mr. Biden and his younger son, Hunter Biden, were not credible. Mr. Volker said he tried to explain to Mr. Giuliani that if Ukraine wanted to investigate possible corruption in one of its companies, Burisma Holdings, that was one thing, but Mr. Volker said he tried to warn Mr. Giuliani not to tie it to the Bidens because it would be seen as political.

Giuliani could be facing charges for tampering with the elections next year.

Harrowing new details have emerged in the slaughter of three Mormon mothers and six of their children after cartel gunmen opened fire in a grisly ambush in Mexico on Monday.

Nine members of the LeBaron family were attacked eight miles apart on Monday while traveling in a convoy of three SUVS on a dirt road.

One hero mother died shielding her seven-month-old daughter who survived, it has since emerged. And a 13-year-old boy hid his siblings from gunmen in bushes and walked 13 miles for help, loved ones say.

Police confirmed they have arrested a suspected drug lord after the killings which left one vehicle torched and riddled with bullets.

Your deep state conspiracy theories have been shredded by a Republican!

The White House’s initial argument that there was no quid pro quo was based on what Mr. Sondland had said in a text message. His testimony showed that that was truly just a talking point. So hearing Mr. Sondland confirm the quid pro quo enhances the credibility of arguably the most important anecdote in this investigation, which other witnesses have described. Now we have the person directly involved in it saying it under oath.

His revised testimony is a particularly serious blow to the president. Mr. Sondland is not part of a “Deep State.” He’s not a “radical Democrat.” He’s a political appointee who gave a million dollars to the president’s inaugural.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Beshear, the state's attorney general, leads Bevin by about 8,000 votes.

President Trump won the red state in 2016 by 30 points, and held a rally in Lexington on Monday night to try to drum up support for Bevin. Bevin, however, is deeply unpopular in Kentucky, and Beshear ran against him on several important issues, including education and health care. Beshear's father, Steve Beshear, was a two-term governor of Kentucky.

A federal court on Thursday approved new district boundaries for the Virginia House of Delegates that were drawn by a court-appointed expert and are likely to benefit Democrats in November’s state election.
The U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Virginia voted 2 to 1 to finalize the map, which would put six Republicans into districts that would probably become majority Democratic, according to an analysis of recent elections by the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project. Several of those Republicans hold leadership positions — including House Speaker Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights).
Federal judges ruled last year that 11 of Virginia’s House of Delegates districts in the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas were racially gerrymandered — designed to concentrate black voters and deprive them of representation. After the General Assembly failed to agree on a redistricting plan last fall, the judges appointed Bernard Grofman, a professor at the University of California at Irvine, to draw new boundaries.

Democrats appeared to score two substantial wins Tuesday night in elections that showed the party continues to gain ground in key suburban areas, a warning sign to Republicans a little less than a year before President Trump faces reelection.

In Kentucky, Attorney General Andy Beshear (D) declared victory over Gov. Matt Bevin (R) by just over 4,600 votes out of more than 1.4 million cast, an apparent upset election in one of the more conservative states in the country.

In Virginia, Democrats reclaimed control of the state's General Assembly for the first time in two decades, building on big gains the party made just a year after Trump took office.

In both cases, suburban voters delivered for Democrats.

It was not a good night for Republicans. Democrats are celebrating in one of the reddest states after Andy Beshear declared victory over incumbent Republican Gov. Matt Bevin in Kentucky, who said he'd not concede. In Virginia, Democrats won majorities in both the House and Senate, giving the party full control of the state government and solidifying what was once a swing state into a stronghold for the party. Things were more optimistic for Republicans in Mississippi, where they held on to the governor's office, beating back a veteran Democrat's bid for another potential election-night stunner.

Democrats’ claim of victory Tuesday in Kentucky’s gubernatorial race, as well as the Democratic takeover of the Virginia state legislature, left Republicans stumbling and increasingly uncertain about their own political fates next year tied to an embattled and unpopular president.

Many allies of President Trump’s rushed to explain away the poor performance of incumbent Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) as an anomaly, while other GOP veterans expressed alarm about the party’s failure in a state where Trump won by nearly 30 percentage points in 2016 — and where he just campaigned this week.

While Bevin was unpopular, he was also a devotee of the president, embracing Trump’s agenda and his anti-establishment persona. And in the contest’s final days, Bevin sought to cast his candidacy as a bulwark against House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry of Trump.

But Bevin’s attempt to nationalize his cause by stoking conservative grievances about the impeachment process was not enough to overcome his problems nor was Trump’s raucous rally for the governor on Monday — raising questions about Trump’s political strength as he faces a barrage of challenges and a difficult path to reelection.

A woman who attracted fame for her middle-finger gesture to Donald Trump has continued her opposition to the president and his party by flipping a Republican seat in a local government race – and will now legislate for an area including some of the president's property empire.

An image of Juli Briskman raising her middle finger at the presidential motorcade in October 2017 became a symbol of American anger at the White House as voters raged at Mr Trump’s plans to introduce harsh policies restricting the residency rights of child migrants as well as his response to the disaster in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria.

At the time of the photo, Mr Trump had been heading to the Trump National Golf Club, some 20 miles north of the White House.

Now Ms Briskman, a lifelong resident of Loudon County in Washington DC’s neighbouring state of Virginia, has won a seat on the region's board of supervisors – and will legislate for an area that includes the Trump golf resort he had been visiting that day.

"Looking forward to representing my friends and neighbours in Algonkian". she tweeted shortly after her victory.
