Under questioning from Adam Schiff, Taylor said that Zelensky and his aides believed it was a bad idea to interfere in U.S. elections, but that the Ukrainian president was still planning to go on CNN to announce the investigations Trump wanted.
Asked if they are "Never Trumpers," as the president has alleged, Taylor said that he is not. Kent said he is a career diplomat who has carried out the policies of both Democratic and Republican presidents.

Bribery
Primary tabs
Definition
Corrupt solicitation, acceptance, or transfer of value in exchange for official action.

Overview
Bribery refers to the offering, giving, soliciting, or receiving of any item of value as a means of influencing the actions of an individual holding a public or legal duty. This type of action results in matters that should be handled objectively being handled in a manner best suiting the private interests of the decision maker. Bribery constitutes a crime and both the offeror and the recipient can be criminally charged.

Proof of bribery requires demonstrating a “quid pro quo” relationship in which the recipient directly alters behavior in exchange for the gift. Because the relationship does not occur directly enough, campaign donations from corporations or individuals to political candidates do not constitute bribery. Another element of proving bribery includes proving intent to influence the discharging of another’s official duties. Some statutes also require proof that both parties understand and agree to the arrangement. Attempts to bribe exist at common law and under the Model Penal Code, and often, the punishment for attempted bribery and completed bribery are identical. Solicitation of a bribe also constitutes a crime and is completed regardless of whether the solicitation results in the receipt of a valuable gift.

Last week's outrage is as full of shit as the rest have been

Attorney General William P. Barr said Wednesday that he did not remember President Trump ever asking him to hold a news conference declaring the commander in chief broke no laws in a controversial phone call with the leader of Ukraine, but acknowledged discussions with the White House on how his department would communicate to the media about the matter.

At an event in Memphis about a Justice Department crackdown on gun violence, a reporter inquired, “Mr. Attorney General, did the president ask you to publicly defend him regarding the Ukrainian call, and if so, why did you not want to do that?”

“If you’re talking about press reports that he asked me to have a news conference, the fact is, I don’t remember any such request,” Barr said. “In fact, my recollection is that I told the White House that we would do what we would normally do, and that is issue a press statement, which we did, and that was not an issue. There was no pushback on that.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This could be a bombshell for one reason. If it is true, that the President was on a cell phone, because even the Russians could have been listening into the conversation.

One of Taylor’s staffers was present at the meeting and the restaurant, and overheard the phone conversation.

The staffer told Taylor that Trump asked Sondland about the status of “the investigations,” Taylor testified in his opening statement.

“The member of my staff could hear President Trump on the phone,” Taylor said, “asking Ambassador Sondland about ‘the investigations.’ Ambassador Sondland told President Trump that the Ukrainians were ready to move forward.”

Under questioning later, Taylor affirmed that he understood “the investigations” to mean the investigations Trump wanted Ukraine to announce into the 2016 U.S. elections, the Bidens and Burisma, the natural gas company on whose board Hunter Biden sat.

The other thing is that they were attempting to extort gift.

It is not a quid Pro quo because it is irrelevant because extortion is a crime.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Taylor testifies that when Sondland was asked what Trump thought of Ukraine, "Sondland responded that President Trump cares more about the investigations of Biden." Here's the motive. Trump only saw Ukraine policy as a means to get the political dirt he wanted!

Whether or not did the two witnesses provided the smoking gun, doesn't matter.

Scott Walker is right about one thing a week is the Democrats have to get more first hand information about the President and his alleged crimes and misdemeanors.

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace argued that William Taylor's testimony in front of the House Intelligence Committee was very damaging to President Trump.

Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, testified on Wednesday about the Trump's desire to convince Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

Following the Democrats' questioning of Taylor, Wallace warned that it was too early to conclusively judge Taylor's testimony because the Republicans hadn't had their turn questioning the witness. Despite that, he said, "Having said that, I think that William Taylor was a very impressive witness and was very damaging to the president. First of all, as you pointed out, he took very copious notes at almost every conversation — when he put quotes in his opening statement, he said those were direct quotes from what was said. It also doesn’t hurt that he has a voice like Edward R. Murrow."

Alcohol addiction is a complex disease with psychological, biological and social components, and like other chronic illnesses, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Some people can drink alcohol—and even over-indulge on occasion—without it becoming an issue. For others, drinking can turn into mild, moderate or severe "alcohol use disorder," the term doctors and clinicians now use instead of alcoholism, alcoholic or alcohol abuse.

Why do some people become addicted to alcohol or other drugs while other people don't?
Multiple risk factors come into play, including age, genetics, biology, environment and social influences, but one aspect applies across the board: alcohol affects our brain's reward center. When we eat good food, listen to music or exercise, our brain releases bursts of dopamine, a feel-good chemical that urges us to "do that again!" According to research by biological psychologists, individuals who are more susceptible to addiction—as well those who are genetically susceptible to certain mental health disorders—likely have lower levels of dopamine in their brains. These biological differences in brain chemistry are not choices.

Research also shows that when the brain reward centers for these individuals are flooded with alcohol- or drug-induced levels of dopamine, the connection between drinking, the resulting pleasure and cues linked to the experience "teach" the brain to seek drugs or alcohol at the expense of healthier goals and activities. In short, the need for addictive substances becomes hardwired in the brain, to the point that the brain can't distinguish between healthy rewards and drug rewards.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, "This is why a person who misuses drugs eventually feels flat, without motivation, lifeless and/or depressed, and is unable to enjoy things that were previously pleasurable. The person needs to keep taking drugs to experience even a normal level of reward—which only makes the problem worse, a vicious cycle."

Does the medical community recognize alcoholism as a disease?
Yes. Since 1956, the American Medical Association (AMA) has identified alcoholism as a disease characterized by compulsive decision-making, impulsive behavior and relapse. The AMA's disease theory of alcoholism is based on the following criteria:

Biological in nature (illness exists in and of itself)
Does not go away or heal on its own
Exhibits observable signs or symptoms
Is progressive (can get worse—even fatal—if left untreated)
Has a predictable timeline of development and recovery.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Will Republicans will actually admit is racism? It's a question on a lot of progressive minds in the wake of Donald Trump demonizing female congresswomen of color with the "go back" canard that white nationalists and other assorted racists have long used to abuse anyone with heritage they dislike, whether that heritage is Jewish, Irish, Italian, African, Latin American or Muslim. Telling someone to "go back" is, in the ranks of racist statements, right up there with calling a person the N-word or some other rank slur. Yet, there still appears to be resistance among Republicans to admitting that is racism, which leads many on the left to wonder: If this doesn't count, then what could possibly count?

The answer, it's becoming quite clear, is that there is no limit. There's no line in the sand, no sentiment so ugly, where most Republicans will cave in and admit, OK, that's racist.

Interestingly enough... I saw the part just prior to this segment here. Where Jordon reads Taylor's statement. Not just once, but several times. The statement is nonsensical.

The smiling is a nervous type of smile when you are trying to conceal embarrassment. The reality is that William Taylor provided nothing new for the Democrats today that we hadn't already heard.

But this segment here from Jordon "was" new. We hadn't gotten a chance to see the ridiculousness of his statements and the complete ludicrously of how "far removed" he actually is to the things he is testifying about.
