Does anyone really believe this?

Pelosi says leadership won't pressure moderates to back impeachment
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that party leaders will apply no pressure on rank-and-file members to support the articles of impeachment against President Trump that are expected to hit the House floor next week.

While the House Democratic Caucus is overwhelmingly supportive of the impeachment effort, several moderate members are holding out ahead of the votes amid concerns that backing the effort might alienate voters in their battleground districts heading into the 2020 election.
Pelosi maintained on Thursday that the choice is entirely theirs to make.

The articles are expected to be voted on by the House Judiciary committee today and then a vote will be put to the full House next week. Meanwhile McConnell has agreed to allow the President to bring forward his own defense. At this point, it sounds like we will something like opening statements being brought by both sides, with questions about how many (if any) witnesses will be called.

Republicans have gone from their demand that they would call everyone from Hunter Biden to Adam Schiff, to now suggesting that there may be "no" witnesses called at all. The new line of reasoning is that they would move from opening statements to a quick vote of acquittal. The question will be whether or not the GOP Senators can agree one way or the other with the idea of a quick vote or whether some of the more moderates are going to want a pretense of a trial before the foregone acquittal vote takes place.

I think if the GOP remains solid in both the House and Senate, while there are a handful of Democratic defections in one chamber or the other, the idea of pushing this through quickly make sense. If the GOP can show that there is no bipartisan support for impeachment and that there "is" bipartisan opposition, that will go a long way to justifying a quick acquittal vote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Thursday that he didn’t believe any Republicans in the Senate planned to vote to remove President Donald Trump from office should the House impeach him next week, saying he even expected some Democrats to side with GOP lawmakers.

“There is no chance the president is going to be removed from office,” McConnell told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Thursday evening. “My hope is there won’t be a single Republican who votes for either of these articles of impeachment. And Sean, it wouldn’t surprise me if we got one or two Democrats.”

The remarks came as lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee held a heated markup session on two articles of impeachment related to Trump’s demand that the leader of Ukraine announce the opening of an investigation into a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, and his son Hunter. One article focuses on abuse of power and the other on obstruction of Congress.

Well the House had a chance to hold a fair and open hearing... and instead they cut it short because going to court to compel additional witnesses would take too long politically.

They haven't appeared to have changed the minds of the two Democrats who voted against the probe, and they may have actually lost one or two others. So if you take issue with how there isn't going to be any chance to change people's minds, take it up with Nadler, Schiff, Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats.

The real problem here Denny...

and there isn't really any way around it...

The impeachment argument is a "dud".

The House hearings were a bust.

There just isn't a case here to convince Republicans to remove the President. If the House truly was like a prosecutor and impeachment was the same as an indictment, then the thing a prosecutor is obligated to do before bringing a case is to have an honest and objective believe that they can actually win the case in court.

No DA would allow a prosecutor to take a case to court, knowing full well they are going to lose. But that is exactly what the Democrats are going to do next week. Vote to bring a dead end case to Trial.

You think?

What makes you believe that the Senate trial will be any better for Democrats than the House hearings were? At this point, neither side has any real reason to drag things out. It's more than possible that we hear some arguments, hear from no new witnesses, and then we get nearly a straight Party line vote.

The problem here Rog... and what I don't think you seem to get is that this isn't an issue of evidence, arguments, witnesses or anything else.

At issue are legal arguments that are entrenched. Nobody is going to change their minds on what they believe constitutes "abuse of power" or "obstruction of Congress".

You seem to have this fantasy that some witness will come forward and everyone will go "wow" - there will be blinking lights, loud noise, streamers and confetti, and then everyone will believe like you do.

Not.
Going.
To.
Happen.

The fact is that when there are as many legal scholars who follow the belief that the law allows the President to set terms and conditions and that even if he had engaged in quid pro quo (which actually never happened) it wouldn't be any sort of "abuse of power".

The fact that you support and defend the investigations into Trump and his campaign during the 2016 election makes you a hypocrite if you find the same sort of action "illegal" if it might happen to a Democrat. That is not lost on people.

Secondly, as Turley, McCarthy, and plenty of others have argued, the President has every right to invoke privilege. These are two equal branches of the Government and their inter-branch disputes are not something to be declared as an impeachable offense. The House could have gone the contempt of congress route or gone to court to secure a Judicial ruling.

Again... the fact that Eric Holder, Louis Lerner and others refused to testify for Congress (along with documents being withheld), without anyone deciding that Obama should be impeached is another point for Trump and another show of hypocrisy by the left.

But what people will remember are the facts.

- Democrats brought two articles of impeachment that for the first time in 240+ years did not include an actual settled crime.
- Democrats brought them on a purely partisan basis, with no buy in from anyone on the other side of the aisle.
- Democrats brought them, knowing full well that they would fail.

Those are the only facts that people will remember. The whole Ukraine deal will fade away (especially since there was no actual quid pro quo) and the obstruction of Congress will go down as little more than hypocrisy (considering how often members of the executive branch fail to comply with Congressional subpoenas).

Zelensky says Trump should not have blocked aid: "We're at war."

In a wide-ranging interview with TIME magazine and other European publications, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly pushed back on President Trump for withholding military aid this summer while the country was in the midst of a war with Russia.

Why it matters:
The question of whether Trump froze aid in order to pressure Ukraine to announce investigations into his domestic rivals is now at the heart of the impeachment inquiry. Zelensky denied that he ever spoke with Trump about the aid "from the position of a quid pro quo," but criticized the U.S. for its treatment of Ukraine and frequent labeling of the country as corrupt.

Highlights
On whether Trump wanted to exchange aid for investigating the Bidens

"Look, I never talked to the President from the position of a quid pro quo. That’s not my thing. … I don’t want us to look like beggars. But you have to understand. We’re at war. If you’re our strategic partner, then you can’t go blocking anything for us. I think that’s just about fairness. It’s not about a quid pro quo. It just goes without saying."

On how the U.S. can help Ukraine amid peace talks with Russia
"As for the United States, I would really want – and we feel this, it’s true – for them to help us, to understand us, to see that we are a player in our own right, that they cannot make deals about us with anyone behind our backs."

"When America says, for instance, that Ukraine is a corrupt country, that is the hardest of signals. ... Everyone hears that signal. Investments, banks, stakeholders, companies, American, European, companies that have international capital in Ukraine, it’s a signal to them that says, ‘Be careful, don’t invest.’ Or, ‘Get out of there.’ This is a hard signal."

"America, first of all, has its direct relations with Russia. To influence Russia, to make everyone see that this [war] is a big tragedy, and that it must end, I think that Mr. Trump can speak directly, and I think they do talk about these things."
On Trump saying Ukraine is a corrupt country

"I don’t need to change his mind. During my meeting with him, I said that I don’t want our country to have this image. For that, all he has to do is come and have a look at what’s happening, how we live, what kinds of people we are. I had the sense that he heard me. I had that sense. At least during the meeting, he said, ‘Yes, I see, you’re young, you’re new, and so on."

Reality check:
Trump on Monday falsely tweeted that Zelensky declared during the interview that "President Trump has done nothing wrong with respect to Ukraine and our interactions or calls."

Ukraine Aid Was Released After Federal Lawyers Said Trump Freeze Was Illegal: Report

The president has claimed that he was the one to release the funds, and that there was no quid pro quo for his call to investigate Joe Biden.
____________

It wasn’t Donald Trump who released the promised military aid to Ukraine, but the State Department, after lawyers determined that the White House freeze on the funds was illegal, several sources have told Bloomberg.

Trump has claimed he released the aid on September 11. But five sources told Bloomberg that $141 million of the money was actually authorized to be released several days earlier after lawyers determined that the White House Office of Management and Budget and, therefore, the president, had no legal standing to block the funds. The decision was outlined in a classified memo to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, according to Bloomberg.

“I’d withhold again and I’ll continue to withhold until such time as Europe and other nations contribute to Ukraine because they’re not doing it,” Trump said. “Everybody in the administration knows that what I want, and I insist on it, is that Europe has to put up money for Ukraine also. Why is it only the United States putting up the money? … Germany, France, other countries should put up money.”

At one point, Trump said the United States was contributing “the bulk of the money,” but

But other countries are doing it, and the U.S. isn’t even the majority contributor of total official development assistance.

According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, EU institutions top the OECD’s list of the top 10 donors of official development assistance to Ukraine, with $425.2 million contributed on average for 2016-2017. The U.S. was second with $204.4 million in assistance, closely followed by Germany, which contributed $189.8 million on its own, in addition to contributions it would have made through the European Union.

Your argument and supporting document is nothing more than a "yeah but" line... as is you admit that the aid was provided, that there was no actual quid pro quo... "but" you want to qualify the whole thing with some sort of nefarious explanation.

You may "believe" anonymous accounts of the stories of the heroic deep state going around the President to "prevent him" from breaking the law (even though it's not against any laws), but anonymous "stories", your belief, and $5.00 will get you a cup of coffee.

Whoever the State Department lawyer is who supposedly pulled rank on the President of the United States was not a witness who testified as such, nor has that person been identified, nor has anyone with any true first hand knowledge or authority confirmed anything about the State Department defying some Presidential order to prevent the President from doing something nefarious.

Actually the opposite is true.

The actual people who were responsible for releasing the aid are ON RECORD as not only saying that there was nothing underhanded going on, but that the delay was actually not unusual. They also are providing the same information as the White House for the delay, and there is no mention anywhere in the official records of events some coup taking place to override the President.

You can sit around and pretend that the official statements from the officials responsible are all a bunch of lies and cover up... and that the real truth lies in the anonymous unsubstantiated stories in the liberal biased media.

That's your tin foil hat to wear. Nobody will take it from you.

But it's not evidence or proof or reality.

The evidence still 100% shows that the aid was released and there was nothing provided in return.
