The increase in new jobs fell short of the 165,000 forecast of economists polled by MarketWatch. Wall Street was expecting a dropoff, however, after a surprisingly robust 256,000 gain in the prior month.
The unemployment rate, meanwhile, stayed at a 50-year low of 3.5%.
What’s more, an a broader measure of joblessness known as the U6 rate fell to 6.7% to mark the lowest level on record.
The sturdiest labor market in decades has shielded the economy from a broad slowdown in global growth triggered in part by the U.S. trade war with China. Skilled workers are so hard to find companies are afraid to lay anyone off in case the economy speeds up.
Used to be that 150,000 was the magic number. Reach 150,000 and your job market was doing well and keeping up with the increase in population growth. Today, population growth is lagging and with the boomers retiring, we probably don't even need 150,000 anymore to keep up.
So it's sort of funny to witness the negativity of a job report that comes up with 145,000 jobs, keeps unemployment at a historically low 3.5%, and sets a record for the lowest U6 rate (6.7%) of all time? These reports shouldn't just be good news, they should be considered historically good news.
But with an election coming up, and the media wanting a new President, we can expect to see everything good downplayed and everything even remotely marginal to be played off as near economic disaster.

An unes[ectedly low report....however, the record of consecutive months of job growth started by Obama remains intact....no thanx to trump.......BWAAAAAA!!!!!
Actually Opie... the entire economy can be praised onto Ronald Reagan. Everything that has happened since then (all the good stuff anyways) can be attributed to him. 100% (including the Clinton economy and the good parts of the Obama economy).
It may sound silly, but no less silly than giving credit to Obama for an economy driven by policies 180° from what he advocated.
... the entire economy can be praised onto Ronald Reagan
Opinions are just like assholes, Lil Scotty.... especially idiotic ones.....BWAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! And I guess you deny the fact that Obama reversed the Busch disaster and is the root cause of today's economic growth of 2% and constant job creation!!!! Oh well, now you go to the absurd length that Mr Jelly Bean created today's economy!!!!!!!! Most amusing to say the least!!!
The Three Socialist Stooges of CHT don't have a clue.
Actually Denny...
The economy was stubbornly flat through even the best of Obama years, and we were just told that 1% or 2% growth with a weak labor market was the new normal. Those old blue collar jobs were gone and everyone needed to "learn to code".
Krugman and other liberal Keynesian economists suggested we would never see 3% again without a "magic wand" and that manufacturing in the United States was forever lost. They also predicted a market collapse, a recession or even a depression after Donald Trump was elected... because (of course) he would dispense with the tax and spend Keynesian policies and go back to the horrors of tax cuts and deregulation. Trump has literally undone most of Obama's economic policies and did so quite a while ago.
The problem for people like you, Denny... is you obviously do not understand how different the Obama polices were vs the Trump policies. There is no way that with Trump policies in place, that the inherently opposite (and long gone) policies of the Obama administration are what is keeping our economy going.
With regard to the economy, we owe it all to Reagan? To George W. Bush? To Trump?
Then why was the economy so good during the Clinton years?
And why the disaster of Geo. W. Bush?
Apparently there IS now some slowing down. Neither exaggerating nor denying that is truthful.
Meanwhile, and probably more important:

‘You’ve Hit a Shocking New Low’
January 10, 2020 at 9:42 am EST
Preet Bharara slams Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) for asserting on Fox News that Democrats “are in love with terrorists. We see that they mourn Soleimani more than they mourn our Gold Star families.
“I realize that you are a politician and that hyperbolic, hyperpartisan claptrap is the unfortunate fashion of the day. But even allowing for the new normal of nastiness in political rhetoric, your casual slur of countless good Americans hits a new bottom…
“You are not a talk radio host or a carnival barker. You are a pastor, an attorney and a sitting member of Congress. Therefore, the evidence would suggest you should know better. To utter such garbage, which you know to be false and defamatory, goes against all the training and teaching you must have received. But you got your cheap shot across, and perhaps that’s all that matters to you.”

The same can also be said to some who post such claptrap cheap shot garbage here.
Novelists Offer $200K for White House Press Briefing
January 10, 2020 at 8:03 am EST
Bestselling novelists Stephen King and Don Winslow have offered to donate $200,000 to a children’s hospital if the White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, will hold a press conference, The Guardian reports.

Is this laughable or what? When an administration is THAT afraid of facing the press...
Who says it's fear?
Great for the America First Agenda. Terrible for the Socialist Democrats .
James...
The idea that Ronald Reagan is responsible for today's economy was sarcasm and no more or no less realistic that Obama's old Keynesian over regulation and stimulus spending is responsible for today's economy that is working under tax cuts and deregulation.
While economists will generally agree that there is a lag between policy and results, they are talking months (not years). But hey, if you really believe that Trump's policies are horrible and won't take hold for another year or two, wouldn't it be unfortunate if a Democrat was elected in 2020 only to see a big recession in 2021 or 2022?? Knowing that it will take multiple years before the new policies take effect?
“I realize that you are a politician and that hyperbolic, hyperpartisan claptrap is the unfortunate fashion of the day. But even allowing for the new normal of nastiness in political rhetoric, your casual slur of countless good Americans hits a new bottom…
I believe that it is an entirely lucid and accurate argument to say that Democrats put up way more of a fuss over Trump killing Soleimani than they have over any of the hundreds of U.S. military deaths that Soleimani was responsible for.
Do you recall any unified outrage from Democrats over any specific attacks? Did they respond with the same outrage when Iran shot down our drone, killed an American soldier, or attacked our Embassy? Because I certainly don't. I believe it went largely unnoticed by Democrats.
The only unified outrage was at Trump for killing Soleimani or when we withdrew from the joke of a Nuclear deal.
So you can clutch your pearls all you want here... but to pretend that the criticism isn't valid is a blatant lie. Democrats have to live with their actions. If they do not want to denounce the Iranian attacks and terror killings, then they should accept the consequences instead of playing victims.
Dopie failures mount , unable to grasp sarcasm .
Why did members of our military officials say they were stunned when Trump, after having chosen to respond less aggressively, became so enraged by the attacks on our embassy* that he opted for the most extreme (hence "stunning") of the options offered to him, thus opening a can of worms we may long have to deal with.
*which were rather ineffective and were soon called off
Why Did Trump Order Strike on Soleimani?
January 10, 2020 at 10:13 am EST
Wall Street Journal: “Mr. Trump, after the strike, told associates he was under pressure to deal with Gen. Soleimani from GOP senators he views as important supporters in his coming impeachment trial in the Senate.”
SO IS THAT THE REAL REASON?
Trump Surprised People Didn’t Rally Around Him
January 10, 2020 at 12:17 pm EST
President Trump “actually was surprised” his decision to kill Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani wasn’t “a unifying event for the country,” New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman told CNN.
Said Haberman: “He actually was surprised this was not more of a unifying event for the country, which is what he expected it was going to be. Something more along the lines of what you saw around the Iraq War lead-up.”
GOSH. HE THOUGHT EVERYONE WOULD JUST LOVE HIM FOR IT.
Time for him to be shown the door.
Trump Has Made Us All Stupid
January 10, 2020 at 12:28 pm EST
David Brooks: “Donald Trump is impulse-driven, ignorant, narcissistic and intellectually dishonest. So you’d think that those of us in the anti-Trump camp would go out of our way to show we’re not like him — that we are judicious, informed, mature and reasonable.
“But the events of the past week have shown that the anti-Trump echo chamber is becoming a mirror image of Trump himself — overwrought, uncalibrated and incapable of having an intelligent conversation about any complex policy problem.”
Collins Apologizes for [Stupidly] Saying Democrats Love Terrorists
January 10, 2020 at 12:20 pm EST
Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) apologized for accusing Democrats of being “in love” with terrorists.
Said Collins: “Let me be clear: I do not believe Democrats are in love with terrorists, and I apologize for what I said earlier this week.”
Wages are up
401Ks are up
Job creation is up
Wealth creation is up
Property values are up
Only the stupid would think this is stupid
David Brooks: “Donald Trump is impulse-driven, ignorant, narcissistic and intellectually dishonest. So you’d think that those of us in the anti-Trump camp would go out of our way to show we’re not like him — that we are judicious, informed, mature and reasonable.
uh huh.
you are so judicious, so informed, so mature, and so reasonable, you swooned at the crease in 0linsky's trousers...
That first encounter is still vivid in Brooks’s mind. “I remember distinctly an image of--we were sitting on his couches, and I was looking at his pant leg and his perfectly creased pant,” Brooks says, “and I’m thinking, a) he’s going to be president and b) he’ll be a very good president.” In the fall of 2006, two days after Obama’s The Audacity of Hope hit bookstores, Brooks published a glowing Times column. The headline was “Run, Barack, Run.”
https://newrepublic.com/article/68823/the-courtship
perhaps brooks was overcome by the musky odor of 0linsky's scrotum.
“But the events of the past week have shown that the anti-Trump echo chamber is becoming a mirror image of Trump himself — overwrought, uncalibrated and incapable of having an intelligent conversation about any complex policy problem.”
yep. which is exactly why trump wastes no time on daily press briefings anymore davey.
salami needed killin'. it wasn't even close to being a complex policy problem. this ain't fucking rocket science son.
Why did members of our military officials say they were stunned when Trump, after having chosen to respond less aggressively
Which Military officials, James... and what specifically did they state? Do you have any names? Direct quotes? ANYTHING????
Because the plan to kill Soleimani was not conjured up by Trump and a couple of buddies over a round of golf. That plan to kill Soleimani was provided to him by the Military commanders. If they didn't believe that this plan was reasonable, then why would they have presented it?
So you should answer this for all of us:
Why would anyone in the military be "stunned" that top military commanders recommended a plan to kill Soleimani. Who would be "more" qualified on the subject than the very top brass military commanders who would provide these options to the President? Who would be so qualified as to suggest that a plan provided by the military and presented to the President by top military commanders be so "shocking".
The only "shocking" thing here is that you still fall for this nonsense.
rrb shows up and we have brilliant comments about smelly scrotums

So Trump's not capable of having an intelligent conversation about any complex policy problem?
Silly tweets and bombastic campaign speeches exhaust his abilities?
Collins Says She’s Working to Allow Witnesses
January 10, 2020 at 1:29 pm EST
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) told the Bangor Daily News that she is working with a “fairly small” group of senators to ensure that an initial resolution on President Trump’s impeachment trial rules allows for witnesses.
Said Collins: “I am hopeful that we can reach an agreement on how to proceed with the trial that will allow the opportunity for both the House and the president’s counsel to have witnesses if they choose to do so.”
Not at all. 20M listeners heard Limbaugh interview him just this week.
Just because a few preening Whitehouse reporters no longer have a stage to act on. Good for the rest of us.
re 12:35
Ch, are the points made in posts 11:40 and 11:45 above "nonsense"?
Answer concerning the first, then concerning the second.
The Emergency Impeach Thingy is stalled until sometime next week, maybe?
Which Military officials, James... and what specifically did they state? Do you have any names? Direct quotes? ANYTHING????
the pederast is referring to that maggie haberman article from a few days ago making that claim... anonymously, un-sourced.
"few preening Whitehouse reporters"
Exactly
re 12:51:
I sure hope Limbaugh didn't ask Trump anything the least bit demanding.
LOL Was Trump sitting on Limbaugh's lap?
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) told the Bangor Daily News that she is working with a “fairly small” group of senators to ensure that an initial resolution on President Trump’s impeachment trial rules allows for witnesses.
there's a smaller group of senators who gets to decide that definitively.
a group of ONE - mcconnell.
Yes James...
The idea that Maggie Haberman knows what Trump is thinking is nonsense.
As is the idea that military officials are shocked with each other.
As is the idea that Senators pressured the President into killing Soleimani when Congress was not even briefed on the matter.
It's all nonsense James...
Why would you believe any of it?
Jane , the economy is so great you can't talk about it.
Alky and Distopia Denney agree 2020 is not going to be about the Economy , do you agree?
Wonder if Ch believes this?
U.S. Targeted but Missed Iranian Commander in Yemen
January 10, 2020 at 1:34 pm EST
“The U.S. military recently targeted but failed to kill Iran’s senior military commander in Yemen around the time it conducted the drone strike that killed an Iranian commander in Baghdad,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The highly classified operation against Abdul Reza Shahlai in Yemen shows that the U.S. operation that killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad last week was more ambitious and multifaceted than the Trump administration has disclosed.”
Why would you believe any of it?
because they are THAT desperate. trump has been consistently kicking their ass on every issue since inauguration day.
and he's been systematically destroying 0linsky's legacy in the process.
I see the POS "pastor" and political_lire waterboy has been busy carrying their water over here. Without any regard to topic. Typical.
But let me help you out. Some things are confidential and secret and should be kept that way such as secret military actions. Other things like Hillary destroying subpoenaed emails and destroying physical devices such as her blackberry should have been produced for investigators and are in fact criminal even if they were not prosecuted.
But anyways WHAT A GREAT WEEK FOR REPUBLICANS AND AMERICANS !!!

Don't confuse the POS waterboy with facts and logic. He's just a failed waterboy.
Rep. Jim Jordan
@Jim_Jordan
Great news week for the President:
-Eliminated Soleimani
-New sanctions on Iran
-140k more jobs this month
-Dow clears 29,000
-Court allows $3.6 billion for the Wall
No wonder Pelosi announced she’ll finally send the articles to the Senate
So Trump's not capable of having an intelligent conversation about any complex policy problem?
he's exhibited an exquisite ability to do just that.
he just can't be bothered to do it with the unserious asshats of the DNC steno pool press corps.
assholes like jim acosta are not automatically entitled to a platform.
There is the rub.
😊systematically destroying 0linsky's legacy in the process.☺

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump to restructure the United States's top trade relationships have cost American companies $46 billion since February 2018, and U.S. exports of goods hit by retaliatory tariffs have fallen sharply, according to an analysis of Commerce Department data.
The lion's share of the higher tariff costs, some $37.3 billion, stemmed from duties on imports from China, said Washington-based consultancy Trade Partnership Worldwide, which calculated cumulative tariff costs through November 2019, the latest data available.
Exports of U.S. goods hit by retaliatory tariffs from China and other countries fell by 23% in the 12 months ended November, compared with 2017, before the tariffs began, the analysis showed. Even when retaliatory tariffs have ended, those exports haven't bounced back, said Trade Partnership Vice President Dan Anthony. https://tmsnrt.rs/2Tg8IO7
Seasonally adjusted U.S. Commerce data released on Tuesday showed the overall U.S. trade deficit narrowed to a more than three-year low in November.
The Trade Partnership uses raw, not seasonally adjusted, data, which is specific enough to match tariff codes to categories of goods, and then break it down by state. It conducted the analysis for Tariffs Hurt the Heartland, which includes a coalition of more than 150 business associations and the Farmers for Free Trade coalition.
Two states that hold early primaries in the 2020 presidential election, Nevada and New Hampshire, saw their exports of goods facing retaliatory tariffs drop by nearly twice the national average, Anthony said. Nevada exports integrated circuits and New Hampshire produces computer and electronics products.
Trump's trade policies have not been a key issue to date for Democrats seeking their party's nomination.
China's Vice Premier Liu He is slated to sign a Phase 1 trade deal at the White House on Jan. 15 at the White House, China's commerce ministry said on Thursday.
As part of that deal, the United States will halve 15% tariffs imposed in September 2019 on $120 billion in Chinese goods, but 25% tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese goods applied earlier will remain in place.
U.S. exports of goods subject to retaliatory tariffs in China were 26% lower in the 12 months ending November than in 2017, while exports of items not facing such tariffs were 10% higher than 2017 levels, Anthony said.
Total U.S. exports were higher than in 2017, but retaliatory tariffs slowed growth in 2018 and exports have declined in 2019, he said.
Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports in February of 2018. U.S. exports to countries that retaliated with tariffs of their own were 15% below their 2017 levels in the 12 months ending November 2019, he said.
After Washington rolled back these tariffs for Mexico and Canada, the two countries eliminated retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in May, but U.S. exports of affected products have not rebounded.
"The expectation was that trade would start growing again, but that hasn't happened in the last six months," Anthony said. "It raises questions about all other exports that have declined. There's no guarantee that those sales will rebound if or when those retaliatory tariffs go away."
Which retarded Socialist said this:
"“December’s jobs report caps a year of growing uncertainty in our economy, rising desperation in farm country and surging costs of living for hard-working families,”
