"You made the point that the president has blocked witnesses and that's true but some of your critics have said that the House could have done a lot more to exhaust the alternatives, to go through the entire process through the courts and get - to see if they would rule on witnesses," Stephanopoulos said.
The ABC News host pointed to Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), a moderate who Democrats hoped would vote in line with them to call additional witnesses. She has since said she would vote against the Democrats' calls for additional witnesses and in line with Republicans. Collins made it very clear she believes the House should have waited for the courts to rule on witness testimony.
Certainly Collins, Murkowski, Romney and others could later choose to hear from new witnesses depending on how compelling the House argument is. But getting to 51 vote becomes harder and harder if you cannot depend on Susan Collins to be a sure thing.
More to the point, which of these other witnesses are going to really forward the case. John Bolton wasn't even subpoenaed or called by the House in the impeachment hearing phase. They obviously didn't feel his testimony was important or needed to prove their case. He's just another guy who will say he didn't care for how Trump was handling things, but has no first hand knowledge of any quid pro quo deal (likely because there never was any quid pro quo deal made). Why now (that this is so close to falling apart) do they demand that this unnecessary witness is suddenly necessary at the core? Why now, when there is literally no reason to believe he has anything "new" to offer?
Because they are just looking to drag this out a little longer. The longer they can drag it out, the better they believe it is politically. They also know that once the Senate votes to dismiss or acquit, that this whole thing is going to go away, and the general public will not tolerate the Democrats trying to reopen the same can of worms twice. They need to act fast and they have very few cards to play.
