Which side "really" represents a cult?

Column: Call Trumpism what it is: a cult
The comparisons have come hard and fast, at least since 2015. Trump is like Silvio Berlusconi, like Adolf Hitler, like Boris Johnson. A 2018 film called “The Trump Prophecy” took the evangelical route, comparing Trump to Cyrus the Great, the 6th century BC Persian monarch chosen by God to free Jewish captives in Babylon.

But maybe it’s time to stop searching for the exact analogy for Trump, be he Cyrus or Boris, Adolf or a Silvio. What demands analysis is less the arrogant 73-year-old mediocrity in the Oval Office, but the worshipful attitude so many Americans have toward him.
A lot of nut jobs have peddled lies to Americans before, and even styled themselves as messianic. But at no time in history have so many Americans been drawn to what’s looking increasingly like a cult. I don’t use the term recklessly.

Well it's one thing to compare Donald Trump to Hitler. After all Democrats have declared every Republican President (and most Republican candidates) to be "Hitler" going all the way back to Ronald Reagan. But by tossing Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, and Silvio Berlusconi in with Hitler, this writer is basically making the case that every conservative politician is evil and every country who elects a conservative is quite obviously part of a larger cult.

Here is the reality, folks. I know many Trump supporters and many Trump haters. What I an assure you without question and without exception is that the Trump supporters I know have not changed one bit as people. What I can assure you without question and without exception that pretty much every Trump hater has become a noticeably different person (at least when it comes to politics) since Trump has taken office.

The first sign that someone has been taken in by a cult is not a continued normal existence within their normal lives, with no noticeable changes in behavior. The first sign that someone has been taken in by a cult is noticeable change in behavior, additional emotional arguments, and a basic need to preach to and lecture everyone about how right they are about their new found beliefs. Like the born again Christian who just cannot accept that "others" do not share their new found religious insights and demand that if others just read a line of scripture or two or came to a service, that they too would see the light!

It has become obvious that one of the biggest traits of those suffering from Trump derangement syndrome is projection. They apparently see their own traits and behaviors as the traits and behaviors of those they disagree with. As they scream and holler about Trump, lose their collective minds over mundane issues, and are constantly on the edge of emotional breakdown... they apparently believe that Trump supporters are just as agitated and emotional as they are.

But Trump supporters are neither agitated or emotional. They might be frustrated with the silly impeachment  charade. They might believe that the President would be better off with more subdued behavior and less twitter rants. But ultimately 95% of them will associate their feelings about the President with the economy, judicial nominees, the decrease in migration problems, better trade deals, and a foreign policy that does not involve the United States bowing down to others and ceding our own place in the world.

Ironically these real world tangible issues don't seem to matter to the Trump haters. They have their own imaginary issues with Trump's personality, certain behavior that offends them, as well as just a generic concept that Trump is somehow "unpresidential" and that their personal opinions about the man actually matters more than the tangible results he has produced as President. Just like the born again Christian, they continue to insist that if you would take the time to read some scripture and attend their church, that you too would see what they see.

If you refuse, then apparently you are part of a cult. At least that appears to be their logic.

Two little problems with what Ch says. Remember how many foreign leaders began to scratch their heads when Obama haters painted Hitler mustaches on Obama posters? "Why would they do that?" one foreign leader asked Obama. "Why would they put a Hitler mustache on you just because you want affordable health coverage for all Americans?"

Of course, let us be willing to admit that opponents of Geo. W. Bush also painted Hitler mustaches on him, largely because of what seemed to be an almost dictatorial (Cheney-driven) insistence on invading Iraq against the advice of most of our allies, still regarded as one of the biggest American foreign policy mistakes of our time.

So the Hitler comparisons will always be with us.

But the thing that makes it more appropriate in the case of Trump is this: NUMEROUS Republican leaders in off the record conversations with journalists and Democratic party leaders, have admitted that they are fed up with the erratic actions of Trump, his unwillingness to pay attention to the best advice of his military and civilian counselors, his reliance instead on his own supposedly superior gut instincts in decision making, his reckless tweeting of statements that hurt his own cause and the cause of his own supporters, his all too frequent use of absolute lies which he repeats and repeats in the Goebbels inspired conviction that a lie spoken often enough will be believed.

10 GOP Senators May Buck Trump on War Powers
January 14, 2020 at 7:21 am EST

“As many as 10 Republican senators are considering bucking President Trump on a resolution that would limit his ability to take military action against Iran,” The Hill reports.

“The increasing number is the latest sign of growing GOP frustration over the Trump administration’s justification for the drone strike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.”

A Narrative Collapses as Trump Tweets
January 14, 2020 at 5:26 am EST

New York Times:
“In the 10 days since it carried out the drone strike that killed Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, the Trump administration has been struggling to draft an after-the-fact narrative to justify it. On Monday, President Trump put an end to that hash of explanations.”

Tweeted Trump:
“It doesn’t really matter, because of his horrible past.”

“Until that message on Twitter, the administration had insisted in various ways that General Suleimani, Iran’s most important military official, was planning myriad “imminent” attacks. The unraveling of the explanations accelerated over the weekend after Mr. Trump said four embassies were under immediate threat, a charge that his own administration could not back.”

GOP Faces Reckoning on Impeachment Witnesses
January 14, 2020 at 6:40 am EST

Politico:
“The GOP has tried to stay focused on its game plan to shut down Democratic hopes of locking in witnesses at the outset of the trial, but it’s become increasingly clear the party will face an internal reckoning during the trial as it defends its Senate majority and faces a president who demands complete loyalty.”

Playbook:
“The Senate GOP leadership line on witnesses has softened in recent days. They clearly don’t want to be boxed in, and want to see how the process goes and how members feel in a few weeks.”

Top Republicans Reject Trump’s [Hitler-Like] Call for Dismissal
January 13, 2020 at 9:33 pm EST

“Top Senate Republicans on Monday rejected President Trump’s call for outright dismissal of the impeachment charges against him, but continued to grapple with the shape of the Senate trial that could begin as soon as this week,” the Washington Post reports.

“Most Senate Republicans are eager to stage a trial that ends with Trump’s acquittal and vindication on charges that he abused the power of his office in his dealings with Ukraine and obstructed a subsequent investigation in the House. But over the weekend, Trump urged the Senate simply to dismiss the charges against him — without hearing arguments from House prosecutors or his own legal team.

“On Monday, senior Republicans said immediate dismissal could not win approval in the chamber, where Republicans hold a 53-seat majority.”

Giuliani Wants to Join Impeachment Defense
January 13, 2020 at 7:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 131 Comments

Rudy Giuliani has pressed President Trump to make him part of the team of lawyers who will argue the case against his removal from office on the Senate floor, CNN reports.

Giuliani has argued that he knows the case against the President inside-out.

The Huffington Post first reported that Giuliani is lobbying Trump to join the team.

State Department officials involved in US embassy security were not made aware of imminent threats to four specific US embassies, two State Department officials tell CNN, further undermining President Trump’s claims that the top Iranian general he ordered killed earlier this month posed an imminent threat to the diplomatic outposts.

“The White House is urging Senate Republicans to preserve the option of moving to swiftly dismiss the charges against President Donald Trump after opening arguments in his impeachment trial,” CNN reports.

“Republicans are debating including in the Senate resolution, which would govern the rules of the trial, a provision to dismiss the charges, something that would require 51 votes and would stop the trial in its tracks.”

What Makes Bloomberg’s Campaign Different
January 13, 2020 at 4:10 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 65 Comments

Washington Post: “The thing that makes Bloomberg different is he can knock on all doors at once. Bloomberg is running aggressively to win the Democratic nomination but he is simultaneously building out a general election machine to defeat President Trump, with a new structure — data, field organizing, advertising and policy — that aims to elect Democrats up and down the ballot even if the party’s voters reject the former New York mayor this spring…”

“Bloomberg’s data operation, cryptically called Hawkfish, aims to incorporate expensive demographic and targeting data, parts of which can later be fed back into the party’s databases or repurposed for the broader fight against Trump and Republicans. The fact that he is a candidate gives him greater access to party data than he would otherwise have, and as a candidate he also benefits from lower television ad rates in swing states before their primary contests than he would if he simply advertised against Trump as a regular citizen.”

HE WILL SPEND AS MUCH AS ONE BILLION DOLLARS TO DEFEAT TRUMP, REGARDLESS OF WHO THE DEM NOMINEE IS.

BUT REMEMBER, IT'S NOT ABOUT MONEY. IT'S ABOUT FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

White House Expects Defections on Witnesses
January 13, 2020 at 3:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

“The White House is preparing for some Republican senators to join Democrats in voting to call witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial, which could get underway in the coming days,” CBS News reports.

Senior White House officials says “they increasingly believe that at least four Republicans, and likely more, will vote to call witnesses. In addition to Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah and possibly Cory Gardner of Colorado, the White House also views Rand Paul of Kentucky as a ‘wild card’ and Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee as an ‘institutionalist’ who might vote to call witnesses, as one official put it. “

James...

I hope you realize that without names attached to these numerous GOP Senators or numerous Republican leaders... that those of us that pay real attention will write these off as nonsensical claims.

The Hill is reporting little more than speculation on the part of a Democratic Senator who insists that he knows Senators who are willing to not only buck the President, but also buck the 90% of Republicans that backed him on killing the Iranian terrorist leader.

The Hill (Politicalwire, etc) are actually pretending that because Tim Kaine says it's so, that it must be. The "real" headline would be that the Democrat who is sponsoring the resolution is claiming that there are Republicans who will back him.

Kaine literally said... "Probably about 10" - which is now being circulated as some backbone of fact. This is based on the misguided belief that certain Senators up for reelection would be willing to piss off the people who elected them... for political purposes? Voting (even symbolically) to limit the President's ability to kill terrorists would be a death sentence to most GOP Senators who would make that vote.

At this point, there are two and only two who have made "ANY" statements of support for the resolution. There is one other Senator on record as saying he might be willing to look at it, if the wording was different (as to not upset the constitutional authority of the President to protect the country). But that is a far cry from actually voting for it. The other names are the same ones that "always" come up, but rarely ever come through for Democrats. None of them have made any statement of support.

C.H. Truth said...

So James...

Do yourself a favor. Wait till there is actually a vote on these things. Wait till there are actually 10 Senators willing to denounce the killing of a Terrorist that 90 plus percent of Republicans supported... before you pretend that you know something.

Let's wait to see how many (if any) Republicans vote for witnesses at the trial. Collins (for instance) just speculated very negatively about the concept of bringing in "new" testimony and stated that Democrats the House should have done their own investigating rather than demand it of GOP Senators.

These stories in Politico, the Hill, Politicalwire, etc... are nearly always wrong. I find it amusing that people still fall for it like it's real news.

France, Britain, Germany trigger Iran nuclear deal dispute mechanism

France, Britain and Germany formally triggered the dispute mechanism in Iran's nuclear deal on Tuesday, the strongest step the Europeans have taken so far to enforce an agreement that requires Iran to curb its nuclear program.

The European powers said they were acting to avoid a crisis over nuclear proliferation adding to an escalating confrontation in the Middle East.

In a statement, they said they still want the nuclear deal to succeed and were not joining a "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran by the United States, which abandoned the deal in 2018 and has reimposed crippling economic sanctions.

Triggering the dispute mechanism amounts to formally accusing Iran of violating the terms of the agreement and could lead eventually to the reimposition of U.N. sanctions that were lifted under the deal.

Iran has gradually rolled back its commitments under the accord since the United States quit. Tehran argues that it has the right to do so because of Washington's actions.

"We do not accept the argument that Iran is entitled to reduce compliance with the JCPoA," the three European countries said in a joint statement, using the formal name of the agreement, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

In triggering the dispute mechanism, "our three countries are not joining a campaign to implement maximum pressure against Iran. Our hope is to bring Iran back into full compliance with its commitments under the JCPoA.”

Giuliani Crony’s Evidence to Be Used In Impeachment
January 14, 2020 at 6:04 pm EST

“The House Intelligence Committee released new evidence related to the impeachment inquiry of President Trump, including information turned over by Lev Parnas, an indicted former associate of Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani,” Politico reports.

“The material also includes a previously undisclosed May 2019 letter from Giuliani to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the letter, Giuliani asked for a meeting with Zelensky as the former New York City mayor was pursuing investigations targeting former Vice President Joe Biden.

“The transmission, which reflects the unfinished nature of the House’s impeachment inquiry, comes ahead of an expected House vote on Wednesday to formally send the impeachment articles to the Senate for a trial.”
