Outgunned, outmaneuvered, and outsmarted!

Democrat House Impeachment Managers were not up to the task!

This is how somber they "should" have looked when the voted originally

The Democrats though that they had all the advantages!

  • Unpopular President (even with many GOP lawmakers)!
  • Dastardly story of nefarious quid pro quo!
  • An adoring and helpful median repeating their talking points non-stop!
  • An 18-1 witness advantage!
  • Last minute "bombshell" NYT leak "just at the right time"!

Yet, they still couldn't pull it off. In fact, they couldn't even get enough votes to subpoena additional witnesses (including John Bolton from the aforementioned "bombshell" leak). But this is what happens when you start the race late, try to finish before it's over, have a poor strategy, and are unable to think on the fly. I could write for hours and hours and still not cover all of the individual acts of foolishness and over-the-top self-degrading political acts from those Democrats responsible for this blatant and astounding failure.

The first problem was that they never had a case that ever had a chance of convincing Republicans (much less 20 or more in the Senate) that they should vote to impeach a President. Andrew McCarthy said it best in his most recent column. There really isn't any solid and set criteria for what is and is not an impeachable offense "other" than it needs to be something so egregious that the public becomes outraged enough to make it impossible for the Party of the President to back him/her. This is not much different than a prosecutor having to take into consideration whether they feel that they can secure a guilty verdict. They are not encouraged (or really allowed) just to bring charges they cannot prove against an accused out of some sort of personal vendetta or personal spite. Make no mistake, this was personal for the Democrats, and it never stood a chance.

Ironically it appears that this impeachment hearing will come to a close with the RCP average in a virtual tie (with 47.8% of the population in favor and 47.8% of the population against the removal of the President). That falls far short of the sort of public outrage required to force a guilty verdict.

The second major problem was that the manner in which this impeachment worked put House Managers up against an all star legal team, put together by the President. This was not Democratic politicians against Republican politicians. This was partisan politicians against professionals who work the law and the courts as a matter of their career. The difference was staggering and oh so clear.

President's legal team!

Democrats started off repeating themselves over and over, droning on for three days, with each of the seven managers repeating the same talking points in just a slightly different manner. They are now running through closing arguments, repeating much of the same talking points from the opening over and over and over and over... and quite obviously falling completely on deaf ears. They might have some newfound complaint over the "unfairness" of everything, given they only had an 18-1 witness advantage, and that the President actually was allowed to make his own defense, and the Senate was able to make their own rules.

But the President's defense team all played different parts, and (contrary to Nancy Pelosi and media critique) did so very effectively. Had they not been effective in their arguments, there is no way that this thing would be coming to a close without at least additional witnesses. They picked apart the basis for the House case piece by piece, making logical arguments, legal arguments, political arguments, constitutional arguments, all while refusing to dive into the mud and play the Democrat's game with them. It was impressive in both what they said and did and for what they "did not" say and do. They made the idea of additional witness not only unnecessary, but probably convinced many GOP Senators that doing so would be setting a bad precedent (which ultimately convinced Murkowski on her no vote).

The bottom line is that Democrats overplayed their hand and were likely bitterly disappointed that the NYT Maggie Haberman leak did not have the effect that they probably expected it to (and make no mistake, that was a coordinated effort). Mitch McConnell and the President's defense team played that whole thing perfectly, never flinching, never acknowledging it as a serious issue, and ultimately driving the entire Democratic Party and most of the media stark raving mad, because the coordinated "bombshell"  just never stuck. Republicans had seen this play out during the Kavanaugh hearing, they gave into it, it became a circus (which was the goal) and the adults in charges were not going to allow this impeachment to head down the same rabbit hole.

At the end of the day, the Democrats had a very weak hand, a very weak strategy, and got outmaneuvered through the entire process. But wanna take bets as to whether they try this fiasco a second or third time?

Us long timers go into them more, must admit not much really comes out of that, just kills some time and for me reminds me to check other sources.

Even political_lire which one uniformed poster dumps here regularly without any regards to thread relevance or originality (omission and rewording are two of their regular tools) and without even attributing them (stealing or plagiarizing take your pick). And like the opening of a movie which proclaims "Greatest movie since birth of Christ" with some attached critic's name, one old poster thinks political_lire and the movie which bombed at the box office and faded away deserve that acclaim still.

No one cares or goes to see it or reads the lengthy posted tripe here from certain posters.

The other day, it was down to around 6 million people watching the impeachment. The other 312 million have tuned it out.

Liberals never understand that there are polls that "matter" and polls that don't. I'll take a 60-40 polling advantage on a hot button topic that everyone cares about and states that it will have an effect on their vote, than a 75-25 advantage on an issue that doesn't affect anyone's vote.

I read a poll where only 15% of Americans believed that Impeachment would play a major part in their vote (and even fewer percentage of independents)... and that was in the middle of the trial. How many do you suppose will still give a rats ass 6 months from now? Oh, and how many of those will vote "against" Democrats for putting the country through an exercise in futility.

Everyone remembers the big unfair snub when it happens, but at the end of the day, the Patriots will still be remembered as beating the Rams (not the Saints) and LSU still beat Clemson (not Ohio State)... even though at the time many people thought those teams were "robbed" by the officials.

and let's be clear... when this is all behind us, what will be ultimately remembered is that the Democrats did a shoddy job in their impeachment hearing and didn't bother to get the goods that they claimed that they could. The dishonest "spin" (and it is spin) that this is on the Senate will go away when people settle into the facts.

and very likely the Democrats will lose a Senator or two (at the very least on the obstruction charge)...

and the facts will show that it was a completely partisan decision to impeach the President (over something that was proven in the Senate to not be an impeachable offense).

Let's be honest here Reverend Hypocrite!

Democrats just never sold anyone but the Trump haters and misinformed that they EVER had an impeachable case. I am not sure that they actually "believed" themselves that they had a real impeachable case.

They tossed around a lot of silly rhetoric, saying things like "this was worse than Nixon" or "if this isn't impeachable, then nothing is" which required a stern amount of self control to avoid a belly laugh...

So rather than argue that Trump did was "impeachable" they relied on the rhetoric, distortions, and outright lies. Anyone who watched the trial would have no choice but to come to the conclusion that the idea that there was "nothing to see" in Ukraine with the Bidens is the biggest lie since "you can keep your doctor". Oh, and it wasn't just Hunter... did you listen to the money made by his brother, and other family members abroad while he was Vice President...

(or wait... let me guess... you tuned that whole part out, didn't you?)

But the reason it matters is because THE ENTIRE REASONING of impeachment relies on the concept that NOBODY made a dollar off Joe Biden's political influence, and THAT THE ENTIRE IDEA has been debunked.

When quite obviously it was not only never debunked, the evidence is overwhelming that Biden traded his influence to make his family rich.

But I digress... the reason why Democrats focused on the lack of evidence (and wanted everyone else to play along)... is because they had a fighting chance to convince people that there "was" evidence of the elusive "quid pro quo" that never actually materialized...

But they never, ever, ever, ever had a chance to convince people that their case was good enough to bring forward in the first place...

That is where the Trump team attacked them, and where they won the day. Because ultimately "proof" of a non-crime is irrelevant... and especially so when that "proof" is hearsay, rumors, presumption or a "he said" "they disagree" witness who Democrats never bothered to talk to... but we are supposed to assume had the goods!

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Thursday moved to drop the threat of punishment to oil and gas companies, construction crews and other organizations that kill birds “incidentally,” arguing that businesses that accidentally kill birds ought to be able to operate without fear of prosecution.

Conservation groups said the proposed new regulation from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, which operates under the Department of Interior, would substantially weaken the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and put millions of birds in danger. The threat of fines and prosecution has, for decades, helped prod industries to take steps to protect birds, like affixing red lights on communication towers, they say.

But industry leaders and administration officials said they expected businesses to continue to voluntarily protect bird habitats. Removing the threat of punishment, they said, would bring regulatory certainty and eliminate legal disputes over whether the law covers birds killed unintentionally, whether from an oil spill or the blade of a wind turbine.

Aurelia Skipwith, director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, called bird conservation “an integral part” of the agency’s mission. By specifying that entities should be held liable only if they can be proven to have set out to kill birds, she said, “we are taking action today to make sure our rules and regulations are clear.”

This impeachment (as Turley and many others wrote this morning) will be defined by the fact that the Democrats in the House did a half assed job of investigating THEIR impeachment drive...

and then expecting the GOP Senate to clean up their mess!

The truth is that impeachment is supposed to be a serious thing. The Clinton impeachment hearings lasted much longer, both sides called witnesses, and the entire thing was "preceded" by a months long special counsel that had already clearly investigated the facts.

This House Impeachment "held" the articles from the Senate "almost" as long as they spent investigating it in the first place.

If this had been a reversal, there isn't a liberal media member in the world that would have demanded that a Democratic Senate bend to the will of a GOP House that simply refused to perform their own due diligence and rushed less than thought our impeachment articles on a Party line vote (in which there was bi-partisan opposition).

Definition of a Sham trial

Started by an accuser ("whistleblower" with no first-hand evidence, a political animus and without "whistleblower" status as defined on the forms he filled out) who the defense was not allowed to confront. This was supposedly URGENT and an IMMINENT THREAT to our Republic.

Defense was not allowed to cross examine witnesses.

Any attempt to protect presidential rights in court was deemed an ABUSE OF POWER to not just succumb to the will of Congress but really Schiff.

Witness testimony was done in secret location where any "leaking" was a crime (though somehow much leaking was done by the accusing side).

Defense was not allowed to call own witnesses.

Witnesses were advised by the "judge" and "prosecutor" even on answering questions (from Republicans attending, though leaking any actual witness "facts" would be a crime)

Under a cloud of suspicion that the prosecutor (Schiff) and judge(Schiff) had colluded with the original accuser in bringing charges, making him (Schiff) a fact witness.

Accused witnesses passing this secret screening were then brought into a public re-enactment.

Then was voted on and passed on partisan vote and passed to a different committee without witnesses and presidents counsel was finally permitted to be part of the process.

Then committee voted and passed again on a fully partisan vote.

This total SHAM went to a full house where is was a totally partisan vote except for the Democrats who crossed over to support the President.

Then the house in this matter went on vacation, went on talk shows, sat on any action etc for 33 days.

WHAT A DISGRACE by the HOUSE DEMOCRATS

cowardly king obama said...

I should have added that late in the "trial" when presidents counsel was "invited" to participate in this SHAM they declined after receiving no accommodations.

The role of the Senate in an impeachment trial is to be presented of the House case by the House managers and responded to by the Presidents counsel.

They then are to deliberate and vote. If they want to further examine testimony they can recall witnesses. Kind of like a jury in their chambers except juries can only ask for actual testimony or exhibits or to have questions answered by a judge.

With what was presented to the Senate they should have thrown this whole thing out with the same respect given to the president. NONE.

Of course in this closely divided nation with such a partisan FAKE NEWS state press that was not a politically practical action. But every non-partisan who followed can easily see what took place. And the tide has turned.

Nice story, but that's all it is. Reality is that this was the House's choice! There is no legal considerations that suggests impeachment "taking too long" is grounds for not garnering witness testimony that you claim you want.

Again... Nixon impeachment HEARINGS in the house were at 10 months when he resigned (largely because some court cases went against him).

So the lesson to be learned in all of this... if you want to impeach a President, make sure to take your time, investigate it fully, interview everyone...

Because the case you bring to trial is the case you are going to have to make... just like in the real world, you cannot ask the Judge and Jury in the middle of the trial to "continue your investigation" for you!

The Rest of the world 2 million. The problem is the world is just not doing its share, again.
