- Did we just see a kindlier gentler Donald Trump?
- Was there ever two people more uncomfortable in each other's presence than Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi standing together waiting for the President to come in and start his speech.
- Did Trump actually "snub" Pelosi's handshake or did he turn away "just in time" to not notice she extended her hand?
- It's difficult to explain to a 17 year old who doesn't follow politics why half the audience won't clap for the idea that unemployment is at an all time low for minorities...
- What the heck were the Democrats chanting when they attempted unsuccessfully to disrupt the speech?
- On a scale of one to ten, Nancy gave us an 11 in immaturity when she "ripped up" her hard copy of speech.
- Trump has a lot to run on... almost too much!
- It probably wasn't a coincidence that Trump highlighted several black people last night.
- Was it just me, or did that toddler not seem to care much that his deployed father was home?
- How can you nitpick fact check some of these claims with a straight face after listening to Adam Schiff's argue the day before that Jared Kushner would take us to war is you didn't impeach Donald Trump.
- What exactly was so "dark" about talking up the State of the Union, or is that just what MSNBC "always" says about a Trump speech once it's over?
- What exactly was so "powerful" about the Democratic response? I thought it was below average (at best).
I will be very curious as to how the polls look regarding this one. I would suspect that they will (once again) be much higher than the CNN and MSNBC panels would have you believe. Interestingly none of the cable news channels provided (or reported on) any snap polling. Perhaps nobody will actually even do a poll?
But it's pretty hard not to acknowledge that Trump provided a pretty good speech, that is made possibly by having a pretty good amount of ammunition to assist. Lot's of things to brag about (whether Democrats agree that he deserves credit or not) and that makes the State of the Union speech much easier to give.

Trump claimed the economy is “the best it has ever been.” But GDP growth fell to 2.3% last year and economists predict further slowing this year.
He said he brought about low unemployment by reversing “years of economic decay” and “failed economic policies,” when in fact over 1 million more jobs were added in the 35 months before he took office than in the first 35 months since.

Taegan Goddard:
Here’s what we’ve seen so far this week:
The Iowa caucuses were a complete fiasco with the full results still not complete more than 36 hours later.
President Trump gave one of the most divisive State of the Union addresses in history, beginning with a refusal to shake Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s hand and ending with Pelosi ripping up his speech.
The Senate will later today vote to acquit President Trump on impeachment charges, even though a majority of Americans think he should be removed from office.
It’s safe to say it’s going to be an insane year in politics.
Trump Dismisses Suggestion That He ‘Learned a Lesson’
President Trump dismissed Sen. Susan Collins’s (R-ME) comment that he had “learned a lesson” from impeachment, the Washington Post reports.
When asked about Collins’s comment during a lunch with news anchors ahead of the State of the Union address, Trump said that he’d done nothing wrong.
Said Trump: “It was a perfect call.”

Actually according to RCP polling averages, a plurality 48.1% are against removal of the President. So there are less people wanting him removed than wanting him acquitted... which doesn't make a "majority" regardless of how bad liberals are at counting, math, numbers and things like that.
So not sure why the idiot Goddard believes this makes Republicans wrong for acquitting him (not to mention the charges were nonsense from the start and history will judge them that way).

Dems Leave Chair Empty At State Of The Union To Honor Fallen Hero Soleimani
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Washington has a long history of using empty chairs to make political statements, from "empty-chairing" politicians who don't show up to hearings to leaving chairs empty to protest gun violence.
The practice continued at tonight's State of the Union address, as Democrats left a lone chair empty in the audience to honor their fallen hero General Qasem Soleimani.
"We wanted to call attention to the violence Trump has wrought against innocent freedom fighters," Nancy Pelosi said. "This is just one way we continue to call out his callous oppression of America's enemies. Any enemy of America is an enemy of me, I always say, and Trump needs to understand that principle."
In a controversial part of the speech, Trump said, "Terrorism is bad," drawing boos from the Democrats' side. "Read the room!" shouted one congressman. "Too soon!"
"I mean, we're usually against terrorism," said Senator Chuck Schumer, "but if Trump is against it, it must be the best thing ever."

Terry Jones of Monty Python passed on last month, but his spirit was present at the Iowa caucuses last night as "none of the above" emerged as the apparent winner. The combined efforts of the comedy writers of Tinseltown couldn't have produced a sillier outcome. A technical glitch delayed the delegate count, but the contingent, in this case, reveals the necessary: The Democrats don't have a clue whom they want as a presidential candidate, because the Democratic Party has become a suppurating stew of contending resentments. Do they want a recycled Communist to soak the successful and distribute the spoils to self-defined losers in the form of student-loan forgiveness or subsidized health care or a job-killing minimum wage? Do they want an eco-gender icon who flatters the faddish predilections of young urban professionals? Do they want a feminist standard-bearer with an aggressive redistributionist agenda? Do they want an African-American candidate to embody the rejection of "white privilege" and correct the supposed original sin of slavery? Or do they want an aged, empty vessel whose only qualification is a past association with a Democratic Party that once upon a time won elections?
Democratic voters don't want any of these. No doubt the Iowa Democrats will release results eventually, although challenges and recriminations may persist for a while. But the actual vote, whatever it is, will show a degree of fragmentation among Democratic voters never seen since the party's founding. The radical vote is big enough to block Biden, a shadow of the crafty, nasty politician who crushed Paul Ryan in the 2012 vice-presidential debates, a pathetic figure who says what his handlers made him memorize when you pull the string at the back of his neck. Bernie Sanders, the one candidate who came into the primaries with a national reputation and a field organization, lacks the credibility to unite the radicals, and Elizabeth Warren is too shrill, too extreme and too crazy to do anything but siphon votes away from Sanders. The black candidates have withdrawn from the race. Pete Buttigieg may emerge in front of the pack because he's everyone's second choice.
Thus pops the bubble of intersectionality, the calculus of resentment that was supposed to align the interests of all the oppressed of the world. Feminists ignore the vulgar exploitation of the Super Bowl halftime show because Shakira and JLo are Hispanics, and therefore oppressed people who are entitled to use their sexuality as an expression of power (they also ignore the misogyny of rap and endemic violence against women in the Muslim world for the same reason). Urban metrosexuals ignore the fact that the tax burdens of failing municipalities erode their prospects, because they don't want to seem insensitive to the needs of the homeless or the problems of minorities.
Except they don't. The young urban liberals who rally around Buttigieg are backing the great gentrifier of South Bend, the bane of minority residents. They didn't vote for Cory Booker, who marketed himself as Obama Lite. They abandoned Elizabeth Warren because they actually pay taxes. Sanders has lift from the children's crusade of university layabouts who never learned what socialism actually is, but can't seem to gather a quorum of grownups. And none of the crew appeals to minority voters, whose degree of enthusiasm will determine the turnout, and possibly the result, of the 2020 presidential election.
The Democrats can't unite because they have nothing around which to unite. Resentment is not a unifying platform, because the resenters resent each other as much as they do the opposition. The whole premise of left-wing politics has been daffy from day one, and the slapstick at the Iowa Caucuses is just life imitating art.

Mitt Romney will vote to convict President Trump.

MVP Mahomes is wearing one. Too cool.
You will believe this no matter what.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi ripped into President Donald Trump in a private meeting with Democrats Wednesday, just hours after the two jousted in a silent sparring match during his State of the Union address.
Pelosi, addressing her caucus Wednesday morning, said she felt “liberated” after defiantly ripping up Trump’s speech for the world to see, tearing up each page as she stood behind the president after he concluded his annual address.
“He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech,” Pelosi told House Democrats, according to multiple sources in the room. “What we heard last night was a disgrace.”
Democrats gave Pelosi a standing ovation after she concluded her remarks, coming just hours before the Senate will vote to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial. The California Democrat then went on to salute all seven House impeachment managers by name, according to attendees.
"She said that he disgraced the House of Representatives by using it as a backdrop for a reality show," Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) said leaving the meeting.
Pelosi’s remarks follow the latest turn in the long-running feud between the two party leaders, which played out during Trump’s annual address in front of the Congress and millions of viewers.
Before Trump even started the hyper-partisan speech — which frequently resembled one of his campaign rallies — the two got off on a sour note when the president seemingly snubbed Pelosi by refusing to shake her hand.
For the next 80 minutes, Trump delivered a speech that included a highlight reel of his presidency with a few reality show twists thrown in. The move enthralled Republicans, who lavished Trump with praise and disgusted Democrats, who hissed and booed, later calling Trump’s speech a disgrace.
Pelosi's dramatic gesture — tearing up the speech on national television — was in some ways uncharacteristic for the speaker, who is known for being publicly restrained and has urged her members to respect the office of the presidency.
But it’s also an indication that Pelosi has lost patience with Trump post-impeachment, with the president unwilling to acknowledge any wrongdoing even as some Republicans condemn his behavior.
Speaking to the caucus, some Democrats said Pelosi appeared distraught and frustrated by Trump's speech.
Pelosi specifically called out Trump’s decision to award the divisive conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the middle of the speech.
“He dishonored the State of the Union as an institutional practice,” said Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.). “It was kind of outright pandering to his base. It was just a disgraceful display.”
House Republican leaders were quick to condemn Pelosi — while offering no criticism of Trump's handshake snub — calling her late-night response a petty tantrum. Trump himself weighed in in his own way, rapidly retweeting more than a dozen people criticizing Pelosi's actions, many with the hashtag "PelosiTantrum" on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, the speaker's top lieutenants were quick to come to her defense.
"As far as I'm concerned, a shredder wasn't available, so she did what she needed to do," House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) told reporters after the caucus meeting.
"When someone won't even shake the hand of the speaker of the House, it tells you where their priorities lie," added Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Katherine Clark (D-Mass.).
It was a campaign speech.
WASHINGTON, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Republican U.S. Senator Mitt Romney said on Wednesday that he will vote to convict President Donald Trump on the impeachment article charging abuse of power, breaking with his party to support removing Trump from office, the New York Times reported.
“I believe that attempting to corrupt an election to maintain power is about as egregious an assault on the Constitution as can be made,” Romney told the New York Times. “And for that reason, it is a high crime and misdemeanor, and I have no choice under the oath that I took but to express that conclusion.”
Romney, a moderate, had sided with Democrats in calling for more witness testimony in Trump's impeachment trial, a move Republicans blocked.
Once the party's standard-bearer as its 2012 presidential nominee, Romney has at times been out of step with a party now fully behind the president. (Reporting by Lisa Lambert; Editing by Tim Ahmann)

"The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust," Romney said on the Senate floor. "What the president did was wrong, grievously wrong."
"What Romney said was wrong, grievously wrong."
He is ignoring his constituents and the actual FACTS
Few Americans think the senate made the right decision in barring witnesses
As the Senate impeachment trial nears its end, a new HuffPost/YouGov poll finds Americans saying, by an 8-point margin, that senators should have allowed witnesses first.
Americans say, 42% to 34%, that the Senate made the wrong decision when it voted not to allow any witnesses in the impeachment trial.
Some earlier polls had found much broader support for calling witnesses, with even many Republicans supportive of the idea.
In the wake of the Senate’s vote along almost entirely partisan lines, however, public opinion is now similarly polarized:
77% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say the Senate made the wrong decision,
while just
13% of Republicans and Republican-leaners say the same.
Both parties face negative ratings for their handling of the impeachment inquiry:
Americans disapprove of Democrats’ conduct by an 8-point margin,
and of Republicans’ actions by a 15-point margin.
Those who’ve followed at least some news about the trial say,
50% to 40%, that Democratic senators are playing politics rather than making a good-faith attempt to get to the truth.
By a somewhat wider margin,
57% to 28%, they say Republican senators are mostly playing politics as well.
