Misinformed, stupid, or just flat out dishonest?

Take your pick. But honest isn't even in the ballpark!

We watched Steven Mnuchin talk about this very subject yesterday afternoon (probably in the middle of dementia Joe's nap time). Every American who has provided the Government with direct deposit (though tax returns or other manners) will get a direct deposit. There are also websites to go in order to provide this if they currently do not have it. Those who would like a prepaid debit card can get one mailed to them. Only as a last resort is there a physical check involved, and nobody nowhere nohow has suggested that Donald Trump will be signing them personally.

Moreover dementia Joe goes on making up shit about how Trump is preventing an inspector general to oversee the funds that have not even started going out to anyone yet. Since there is no process in place, there is nobody overseeing anything to be prevented from doing so. Nor has Trump made any statements or provided any speculation that he plans on interfering in any way (even if he could).

Meanwhile Biden lists off a bunch of things that he says "Democrats want" that have already been agreed upon and was passed in the Senate 100-0 and by unanimous voice vote in the House.

Either this is the most misinformed Presidential Candidate in modern history, the guy is dumber than a box of rocks, or he assumes the American public is dumber than a box of rocks and is blatantly lying to them. Either way Democrats would be well advised not to let him be heading up their Party in 2020. He's a complete disaster.

How to Live with Coronavirus
April 3, 2020 at 5:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 98 Comments

Andrew Sullivan:
“The goal is not to ‘beat’ the virus, because it can’t be beaten. Now that it’s a pandemic, it’s here to stay. The goal is not to fight it, or wage war on it. COVID-19 is not a rival military. The goal is to find the optimal path to living with it.

“I want Anthony Fauci making that decision. Right now, as complete a shutdown as possible is the only sane option. And going forward, we should always lean on the side of the preservation of life rather than the maximization of wealth. Every life counts. And if we make that collective pro-life decision — and, mercifully, we are — we are also saying something quite profound about who we are as Americans. We are saying that the lives of the elderly, and the poor, and the vulnerable matter more, when all is said and done, than our GDP. I cannot see how such a society can go forward after such an experience without instituting the kind of universal health care that these values represent.

“It’s hard to go through such ordeals without wanting them to mean something. Out of AIDS came marriage equality, a permanent shift in the relationship between gays and society. Out of this plague, let us erect in its memory another fitting monument that will never age, crumble, or pass away: health care for all.”

Georgia Beaches Reopen

“Some of the state’s most popular beaches will be allowed to reopen Friday night due to Gov. Brian Kemp’s (R) statewide order superseding that of some city-level shelter-in-place mandates,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“Georgia beach communities, including Tybee Island, had closed in response to local mandates imposed to limit the spread of COVID-19.”

a timeless classic:

One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages. That one party can just impose the politically difficult but critically important policies needed to move a society forward in the 21st century. It is not an accident that China is committed to overtaking us in electric cars, solar power, energy efficiency, batteries, nuclear power and wind power. China’s leaders understand that in a world of exploding populations and rising emerging-market middle classes, demand for clean power and energy efficiency is going to soar. Beijing wants to make sure that it owns that industry and is ordering the policies to do that, including boosting gasoline prices, from the top down.

So there you have it. If only America could drop its inefficient and antiquated system, designed in the age before globalization and modernity and, most damning of all, before the lantern of Thomas Friedman’s intellect illuminated the land. If only enlightened experts could do the hard and necessary things that the new age requires, if only we could rely on these planners to set the ship of state right. Now, of course, there are “drawbacks” to such a system: crushing of dissidents with tanks, state control of reproduction, government control of the press and the internet. Omelets and broken eggs, as they say. More to the point, Friedman insists, these “drawbacks” pale in comparison to the system we have today here in America.

I cannot begin to tell you how this is exactly the argument that was made by American fans of Mussolini in the 1920s. It is exactly the argument that was made in defense of Stalin and Lenin before him (it’s the argument that idiotic, dictator-envying leftists make in defense of Castro and Chavez today). It was the argument made by George Bernard Shaw who yearned for a strong progressive autocracy under a Mussolini, a Hitler or a Stalin (he wasn’t picky in this regard). This is the argument for an “economic dictatorship” pushed by Stuart Chase and the New Dealers. It’s the dream of Herbert Croly and a great many of the Progressives.

I have no idea why I still have the capacity to be shocked by such things. A few years ago, during the worst part of the Iraq war, I wrote a column saying that Iraq needed a Pinochet type to bring order to Iraq and help develop democratic and liberal institutions. To this day, I get vicious hate mail from liberal and leftist readers for my “pro-dictator” stance. Meanwhile, Thomas Friedman, golden boy of the NYT op-ed page, is writing love-letters to dictatorships because they have the foresight to invest in electric batteries and waterless toilets or something. It looks like there’s reason to hope I was wrong about Iraq (I certainly hope I was). But at least I favored a dictatorship of sorts — for another country! – because I thought it would lead to a liberal democracy. Here, Friedman lives in a liberal democracy but has his nose pressed up against the candy store window of a cruel, undemocratic, regime and all he can do is drool over the prospect of having the same power here. It’s disgusting.

“The bombshell move to remove Michael Atkinson comes as the administration is struggling to cope with a coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 3,000 Americans.

“Trump has blamed Atkinson repeatedly for letting the complaint get to Congress and letting the impeachment unfold… He has weighed removing him for months, but has been periodically talked out of it.”

Doug Mills/The New York Times
C.D.C. says all Americans should wear masks. Trump says the rule is voluntary.

In the daily coronavirus briefing Friday President Trump said that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention was urging all Americans to wear a mask when they leave their homes, but he immediately undercut the message by repeatedly calling the recommendation voluntary and saying that he would not wear one himself.

“With the masks, it is going to be a voluntary thing,” the president said at the beginning of the briefing at the White House. “You can do it. You don’t have to do it. I am choosing not to do it. It may be good. It is only a recommendation, voluntary.”

“Wearing a face mask as I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens — I don’t know,” he added, though he stopped receiving foreign dignitaries weeks ago. “Somehow, I just don’t see it for myself.”

Mr. Trump’s announcement, followed by his quick dismissal, was a remarkable public display of the intense debate that has played out inside the West Wing over the past several days as a divided administration argued about whether to request such a drastic change in Americans’ social behavior.

And it came at a particularly contentious briefing where the president insulted reporters, jousted with his own administration and returned to pugilistic form.*

Mr. Trump again dismissed the recommendation of Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, for a national stay-at-home order,** saying he would leave such demands to the governors. But he did say that the federal government would pay hospitals to treat coronavirus patients, instead of allowing people to buy heavily subsidized insurance on the Affordable Care Act’s insurance exchanges, as many Democrats have urged.

The mask debate has played out in public and in private. Mr. Trump said Americans who choose to comply with the C.D.C.’s recommendation should use a basic cloth or face mask, not medical- or surgical-grade masks that are used by hospital workers and emergency workers. He also said people must still follow social distancing guidelines, which he called the “safest way to avoid the infection.”

Senior officials at the C.D.C. have been pushing the president for days to advise everyone — even people who appear to be healthy — to wear a mask or a scarf that covers their mouth and nose when shopping at the grocery store or while in other public places.
_________

* His new more humble nice guy act didn't last long.

**Is that why Dr. Fauci was not present for the briefing?
Is he about to be fired too?

Don't bother to do what the CDC or Dr. Fauci are advising,
Trump is saying.

U.S. Beset by Denial and Dysfunction as Virus Raged
April 4, 2020 at 9:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

“By the time Donald Trump proclaimed himself a wartime president — and the coronavirus the enemy — the United States was already on course to see more of its people die than in the wars of Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq combined,” the Washington Post reports.

“The country has adopted an array of wartime measures never employed collectively in U.S. history — banning incoming travelers from two continents, bringing commerce to a near-halt, enlisting industry to make emergency medical gear, and confining 230 million Americans to their homes in a desperate bid to survive an attack by an unseen adversary.

“Despite these and other extreme steps, the United States will likely go down as the country that was supposedly best prepared to fight a pandemic but ended up catastrophically overmatched by the novel coronavirus, sustaining heavier casualties than any other nation.”

C.H. Truth said...

Doug Mills/The New York Times

Doug Mills should pay attention. Trump and the task force have been talking about scarves or a non-medical version of a mask for probably the last week or so.

Dr Birx has gone back on forth with the concept of recommending masks because they are afraid that non-essential citizens would use up the medical masks needed for medical professionals and first responders... and because they believe that people would relax their social distancing.

The idea has been to recommend some sort of cloth mask or scarf which has been a consistent message.

Top Sanders Advisers Urge Him to Drop Bid
