Fauci vs Paul

Sen. Paul: Based on the idea that recovering Corona virus patients are developing immunity and that it can be beneficial as donated. Studies show that the recovering covet 19 patients from the asymptomatic to the very sick are showing significant antibody response. Studies show that SARS and MERS also viruses induce immunity for at least two to three years, and yet the media continues to report that we have no evidence that patients who survive coronavirus have immunity. I think actually the truth is the opposite. We have no evidence that survivors of coronavirus don’t have immunity and a great deal of evidence to suggest that they do. The question of immunity is linked to health policy and that workers who have gained immunity can be a strong part of our economic recovery.

The silver lining to so many infections in the meat processing industry is that a large portion of these workers now have immunity. Those workers should be reassured that they likely won’t get it again instead of being alarmed by me or courts, that there is no evidence of immunity. You’ve stated publicly that you’d bet at all that survivors of coronavirus have some form of immunity. Can you help set the record straight that the scientific record as is as being accumulated is supportive that infection with Corona virus likely leads to some form of immunity? Dr. Fauci, right?
Dr. Fauci: Yep. Thank you for the question, Senator Paul. Yes, you’re correct that I have said that given what we know about the recovery from virus such as coronaviruses in general or even any infectious disease, with very few exceptions, that when you have antibody present, it is very likely indicates a degree of protection. I think it’s in the semantics of how this is expressed. When you say has it been formally proven by longterm natural history studies, which is the only way that you can prove one, is it protected, which I said and would repeat is likely that it is, but also what is the degree or tighter of antibody that gives you that critical level of protection and what is the durability? As I’ve often said, you know, again, you can make a reasonable assumption that it would be protective but natural history studies over a period of months to a years will then tell you definitively it’s, that’s the case.
Sen. Paul: And I think that’s important because in all likelihood is a good way of putting it. The vast majority of these people have immunity instead of saying there is no evidence, you know, the who kind of fed into this by saying no evidence of immunity. And in reality there’s every evidence stacking up. And in fact a lot of the different studies have shown that it is very unlikely that you get it again in the short term. With regard to going back to school, one thing that was left out of that discussion is um, mortality. I mean, shouldn’t we at least be discussing what the mortality of children is? Um, this is for Dr. Fauci as well. You know, the mortality between zero and 18 in the New York data zero, it’s not going to be absolutely zero, but it almost approaches zero between 18 and 45. The mortality in New York was a 10 out of 100,000.
So really we do need to be thinking about that. We need to uh, observe with an open mind what went on in Sweden, where the kids kept going to school. The mortality per capita in Sweden is actually less than France, less than Italy, less than Spain, less than Belgium, less than the Netherlands, about the same as Switzerland. But basically I don’t think there’s anybody arguing that what happened in Sweden is an unacceptable result. I think people are intrigued by it and we should be, I don’t think any of us are certain when we do all these modelings, there’ve been more people wrong with modeling than right. We’re opening up a lot of economies around the, around the U S and I hope that people who are predicting doom and gloom and saying, Oh, we can’t do this, there’s going to be, the surge will admit that they were wrong.
If there isn’t a surge, because I think that’s what’s going to happen in rural States. We never really reached any sort of pandemic levels in Kentucky and other States. We have less deaths in Kentucky than we have in an average flu season. It’s not to say this isn’t deadly, but really outside of new England, we’ve had a relatively benign course for this virus nationwide and I think the one size fits all that we’re going to have a national strategy and nobody’s going to go to school is kind of ridiculous.
We really ought to be doing at school, district by school district and the power needs to be dispersed because people make wrong predictions and really the history of this, when we look back, we’ll be of wrong prediction after wrong prediction after wrong prediction. Starting with Ferguson in England. So I think we ought to have a little bit of humility in our belief that we know what’s best for the economy and as much as I respect to Dr. Fauci, I don’t think you’re the end all.
I don’t think you’re the one person that gets to make a decision. We can listen to your advice, but there are people on the other side saying there’s not going to be a surge and that we can safely open the economy and the facts will bear this out. But if we keep kids out of school for another year, what’s going to happen is the poor and underprivileged kids who don’t have a parent that’s able to teach them at home are not going to learn for a full year. And I think we ought to look at the Swedish model and we got to look at letting our kids get back to school. I think it’s a huge mistake if we don’t open the schools in the fall. Thank you.
Dr. Fauci: Mr. Chairman, can I respond to that even though there are only 32 seconds left?
Chairman: Yes. And you might make it clear whether or not you suggested that we shouldn’t go back to school in the fall.
Dr. Fauci: Well, uh, first of all, uh, Senator Paul, thank you for your comments. I have never made myself out to be the end all and only voice in this. I’m a scientist, a physician and a public health official. I give advice according to the best scientific evidence. There are a number of other people who come into that and give advice that are more related to the things that you spoke about, about the need to get the country back open again and economically. I don’t give advice about economic things. I don’t get advice about anything other than public health. So I wanted to respond to the second thing is that you use the word we should be humble about what we don’t know and I think that falls under the fact that we don’t know everything about this virus and we really better be very careful, particularly when it comes to children because the more and more we learn we’re seeing things about with this virus can do that we didn’t see from the studies in China or in Europe for example, right now children presenting with COVID-16 with COVID-19 who actually have a very strange inflammatory syndrome, very similar to Kawasaki syndrome.
I think we’ve got to be careful if we are not cavalier and thinking that children are completely immune to the deleterious effects. So again, you’re right in the numbers that children in general do much, much better than adults and the elderly, and particularly those with underlying conditions. But I am very careful and hopefully humble and knowing that I don’t know everything about this disease. And that’s why I’m very reserved and making broad predictions. Thank you. Thank you, Senator Paul.

I want to focus on a couple of these items here. The first is purely a semantic argument being made between politicians. The fact remains that the way most every virus like this behaves is that people garner immunity to it once they have contracted and beaten it. There is no real argument to be made against the concept that "we don't know what we don't know". But from what we "do know" it would seem that Covid-19 immunity is much like it is with any virus.

What Paul  here is suggesting is simply because we have not had a "year or so" to verify what appears to be the case, doesn't mean that there is no "evidence" that we develop immunity. In fact, all of the evidence so far suggests that Covid-19 immunity will be like any other virus. It would actually be a much better argument to suggest that there is no current evidence to suggest that people are not garnering immunity after contracting Covid-19.

Fauci basically half agrees with Paul on this subject by claiming that it's a reasonable assumption that cannot be "proven" without time. But Paul's point is still valid here. The reports from the media (and Democrats) that there is no evidence of immunity is simply not true.
_______

The second issue is Paul's argument that we are ignoring much of the empirical data that suggests that children are not subject to the effects of Covid-19.  As Paul points out the data shows that the rate of death among children approaches zero, and that the rate of death among those between the ages of 18-45 is about 10% of the death rate of the seasonal flu (or about 0.01%).

In this case, Fauci uses the concept that "we don't know what we don't know" to suggest that we should be more careful than "cavalier". I have heard a little about Kawasaki syndrome being tied to Covid-19, but there still appears to be no real medical evidence of the link. Moreover, Kawasaki syndrome is prone to infants and toddlers, not school aged children. Doesn't make it any less dangerous, but it also doesn't really make an argument against reopening schools.

What Fauci is arguing is a careful approach, but on this particular subject I would guess that he will eventually be overruled. Unless there becomes something very defining that changes the reality that school aged children are not being affected by Covid-19, the idea of cancelling school next fall seems more than just a little over-excessive.
_______

If I was Dr Fauci, I might decide to pick my battles a little more carefully. There needs to be some validation of empirical data and some suggestion that the task force doctors are willing to accept it, rather than just continue to rely on worst case scenarios. There is an issue of credibility and Fauci (like anyone) can lose it as easily as he had earned it.

As Paul stated (very accurately) the models and predictions have been wrong, wrong, and more wrong. Being an expert is generally not associated with being overzealous in your original assumptions without regard to the data.  Being an expert ultimately means making decisions based on the best known information (rather than worst case scenarios) and ultimately being an expert requires being correct more often than not.

Well, Ch, after weeks and weeks of falsely claiming that me, myself, and I was not listening as well as I should to the expert medical advice of Drs. Fauce and Birce, it now seems you have developed a surprising antipathy toward Fauci's honest opinions. Could that be simply because the genuine expert medical advice of the better experts is exactly what Fauci is continuing to say it is, despite what Trump and you want to hear? Could it be that neither the Covid-19 virus nor Dr. Fauci are willing to play along with Trumpian politics on this?

The majority of Americans are still in favor of being careful rather than cavalier about how we deal with this very difficult matter.

This is what struck me as the central dilemma for Dr. Fauci during the exchange where Paul thunder on how wrong the models were.

Government agencies, including Fauci's own at the National Institutes of Health, are being inundated with calls and emails from nervous people, just as they were during the Ebola and SARS scares.

GOP Caught Between Fauci and Trump
May 12, 2020 at 5:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Republican senators are conceding that Dr. Anthony Fauci’s testimony warning about moving too quickly to reopen the US economy is inconsistent with President Trump’s push to ‘liberate’ various states and quickly get the country back to business,” CNN reports.

“But the GOP is split

about whether Trump should be more cautious with his own public statements

or if it’s Fauci who is being too much of an alarmist,

as Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky appears to be asserting.”
_________

Well, if there has been anything Trump has not been, it's cautious.

And now the GOP would probably do better to stay split and lean a bit more toward the side of caution.

Which, however, in all likelihood it will NOT do, and suffer the probable consequences.

We already have a good idea, the overwhelming majority of children (99.99%) are asymptomatic or show mild symptoms and, more importantly, do not spread the virus to adults.

That is what the empirical evidence shows. It's supremely ironic that Dr. Fauci ignores this evidence in favor of anecdotal reports of children with Kawasaki syndrome possibly linked the the coronavirus.

He's the one who dismissed early studies of Hydrochloroquine as anecdotal demanding further research. Guess to him anecdotal evidence is OK as long as it fits a narrative.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Afraid of what we may find out about Covid-19 and its possible effect on children between now and the summer?

That would not be anecdotal.

No, I don't think it make an impact on the current findings.

However, I don't think plans to re-open schools should wait until your pray for results.

Joe Scarborough:
“Republican incumbent senators in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Maine and North Carolina face serious threats from their Democratic opponents in recent polls.
Once-safe states such as Kansas and Georgia are in play, and Trump himself is losing head-to-head matchups with presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida.
Recent polls show the two are even tied in traditionally Republican strongholds like Georgia and Texas.

“With the prospects of a historic Democratic landslide building with every Trump news conference,
every deranged tweet,
every racist remark,
wouldn’t now be the time for Republican candidates to stand up, speak out and finally stop following a man so ill-equipped for the presidency?

“To quote Trump himself, with control of Congress and the White House slipping away:
‘What the hell do they have to lose?'”

I have no problem accepting Fauci's medical expertise, Reverend.

As pointed out, he agreed in principle with much of what Rand Paul suggested and is making the point that he does not provide "economic advice" which is an acknowledgement that his "opinion" is quite literally based on worst case scenarios and will remain mostly cautious. He acknowledges that there are other sides to this (but those are not his concern).

That being said, Fauci is in no manner, shape, or form saying that things cannot start opening back up or that certain restrictions cannot be loosened.

Unlike you... I can hear both sides of what Fauci is suggesting.

But at the end of the day Fauci is only one side of the equation and he is not (as he suggested today) the "end all be all" of what we do.

While Fauci is given a fairly significant amount of capital based on his expertise... credibility (with anyone) is fleeting when you start to get things wrong.

I believe in empirical data because it's very difficult to argue reasonably against empirical data. I believe very strongly that when you start to go against empirical data (in either direction) you risk losing your credibility.

Fauci is in danger of losing credibility by ignoring the reality that school aged children have simply not been affected by this virus to any real degree in comparison to things like the flu and pneumonia. There comes a time when being cautious has to be replaced with being "realistic".

Nobody (regardless of pedigree) is above having to follow reality, hard empirical evidence, and logical common sense.

Brit Hume blasts media coverage of Russia probe: 'The worst journalistic fiasco' I've seen in my career

Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume told "The Story" Tuesday that the coverage of the FBI's Russia investigation has proved to be the "worst journalistic fiasco" in half a century.

Hume also responded to news that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan had delayed any immediate resolution to the Michael Flynn case after the Justice Department filed last week to drop the prosecution of the former national security adviser

"I'm not surprised to hear that Judge Sullivan wasn't prepared to accept what the [DOJ] wanted to do without some process going forward," Hume said. "I think he was prepared to pronounce the sentence and he had already let it be known in open court that he didn't have much use for Michael Flynn, and basically suggested he was a traitor at one point, remarks that he later tried to walk back."

Hume told host Martha MacCallum that while it is not clear whether former President Barack Obama "directed" the Russia investigation behind the scenes, coverage of the probe has been a low point in the history of American reporting.

"As for the journalism involved in the pursuit of that story, the collusion narrative that we lived with for so very long before it was blown up in the Mueller report, it was the worst journalistic fiasco of my more than 50-some years of journalism," Hume said. "It was a disaster."

Hume recalled that New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet stated last year that he had "built our newsroom to cover one story," the Mueller investigation

"[I]t ended up going nowhere [and] it was a terrible journalistic misjudgment
and it was rooted in their view, in my opinion, of Donald Trump that when this charge arose, they thought so little of him and that he was such a terrible person that it had to be true," he said.

"The Washington Post and The New York Times pursued it relentlessly: Their coverage did not reflect any real doubt that it may not turn out to be true at any time, and in the end it all blew up."

Covid-19 and Partisan State Control

There are 10 states above the national average in deaths per million.

There are 21 states with Republican governors and where both legislative houses are under Republican control. Not one of those state’s deaths per million is over the national average.

Again, there are 10 states above the national average in deaths per million. 5 of those 10 states are under exclusive Democratic control (among 15 states under exclusive Democratic control). And 5 of those 10 states have divided partisan control between the legislature and governor (among 13 states with divided partisan control).

Of the top-3 states, with the highest deaths per million, all 3 are under exclusive Democratic control.

NO, MR. PRESIDENT, WE HAVE NOT PREVAILED, HEALTH OFFICIALS MAKE CLEAR

At Senate Hearing, Government Experts Paint Bleak Picture of the Pandemic
Fauci: Too early opening could be 'really serious'

WASHINGTON — Two of the federal government’s top health officials painted a grim picture of the months ahead on Tuesday, warning a Senate panel that the coronavirus pandemic was far from contained, just a day after President Trump declared that “we have met the moment and we have prevailed.”

The officials — Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, and Dr. Robert R. Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — predicted dire consequences if the nation reopened its economy too soon, noting that the United States still lacked critical testing capacity and the ability to trace the contacts of those infected.

“If we do not respond in an adequate way when the fall comes, given that it is without a doubt that there will be infections that will be in the community, then we run the risk of having a resurgence,” said Dr. Fauci, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who is at the forefront of efforts to find a coronavirus vaccine.

If states reopen their economies too soon, he warned, “there is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control,” which could result not only in “some suffering and death that could be avoided, but could even set you back on the road to trying to get economic recovery.”

Dr. Fauci’s remarks, during a high-profile — and partly virtual — hearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, along with those of Dr. Redfield, made clear that the nation had not yet prevailed.

They appeared to rattle the markets, driving the S&P 500 down as investors weighed the potential of a second wave of infections against Mr. Trump’s promises that the economy would bounce back once stay-at-home restrictions were lifted. Worrisome reports of spikes in infections in countries like China, South Korea and Germany, where lockdowns had been lifted, seemed to confirm the American officials’ fears.

Here in Washington, Dr. Fauci and Dr. Redfield, who have been barred by the White House from appearing before the Democratic-controlled House, drew a very different picture of the state of the pandemic than the president, who has cheered for a swift reopening, championed protesters demanding an end to the quarantine and predicted the beginning of a “transition to greatness.”

Dr. Fauci told senators that coronavirus therapeutics and a vaccine would almost certainly not be ready in time for the new school year, that outbreaks in other parts of the world would surely reach the United States and that humility in the face of an unpredictable killer meant erring on the side of caution, even with children, who have fared well but have recently shown new vulnerabilities.

Dr. Redfield pleaded with senators to build up the nation’s public health infrastructure, even as he acknowledged that the C.D.C. had not filled 30 jobs authorized by Congress last year to expand its capacity to track outbreaks, and had yet to put in place a “comprehensive surveillance” system to monitor outbreaks in nursing homes, which have been hard hit by the pandemic.

TRUMP'S PROPAGANDA BARRAGE IS NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL

Expectations for Safe Gatherings Slip

May 13, 2020 at 7:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“As the coronavirus spreads across the country, Americans are curbing their expectations about when it will be safe for gatherings of 10 or more people, with about 2 in 3 adults now saying it will not be until July or later before those events can happen,” according to a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll.

“The findings provide more evidence that Americans remain worried about the threat of the virus and cautious about efforts to lift stay-at-home restrictions and to reopen businesses, even as many governors have begun to move in that direction. In the face of plans in many states to gradually ease those limitations, significant majorities of Americans continue to emphasize the need for social distancing and other safety measures.”

pastor pederast would prefer we remained locked down for at least a couple of years while driving the national debt to $50 TRILLION.

then tens of millions of lives are destroyed, millions are dead BUT...

...the dream of cloward-piven is achieved with those harmed or killed considered an acceptable level of collateral damage.

this is why we know he's not a real 'pastor.'

no true man of the cloth wishes this level of harm to this many Americans.

CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL ALSO TELL THE TRUTH

CDC Anticipates More Virus Flareups
May 13, 2020 at 7:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Advice from the nation’s top disease control experts on how to safely reopen businesses and institutions in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic included detailed instructive guidance AND SOME MORE RESTRICTIVE MEASURES THEN THE PLAN RELEASED BY THE WHITE HOUSE last month. The guidance, which was SHELVED by Trump administration officials, also offered recommendations to help communities decide WHEN TO SHUT FACILITIES DOWN AGAIN during future FLAREUPS of COVID-19,” the AP reports.

“The Associated Press obtained a 63-page document that is more detailed than other, previously reported segments of the shelved guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It shows how the thinking of the CDC infection control experts DIFFERS FROM THOSE IN THE WHITE HOUSE managing the pandemic response.”

truth, pederast?

fauci himself said that he is not the "end all."

therefore, all he shared was an opinion.

an opinion NOT SHARED by many physicians and epidemiologists as qualified as him.

fauci has the luxury of a cushy government job with an income in a very generous six figures. neither his employment nor his income are at risk. what a luxurious arrangement. and with the blinders of that arrangement firmly in place, of course he recommends a shutdown without end. heads he wins, tails we lose.

he bears no risk and suffers no burden while espousing his informed OPINION.

wow. he's really gone a whole inch or two out on a very long limb, hasn't he?

Trump Pushes CDC to Revise Down Its Death Tally
May 13, 2020 at 8:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“President Trump and members of his coronavirus task force are pushing officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to change how the agency works with states to count coronavirus-related deaths,” the Daily Beast reports.

“And they’re pushing for revisions that could lead to far fewer deaths being counted than originally reported, according to five administration officials working on the government’s response to the pandemic.”

GOOD NEWS! CHARIOT'S A-COMIN'!!!

It Feels Like 2008 Again
May 13, 2020 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Josh Kraushaar:
“Republicans are growing increasingly worried that President Trump’s shaky political position will not just cost them the presidency, but also sweep in a Democratic Senate majority and further diminish their House minority. The latest round of polling shows the president losing to Joe Biden, as well as Democrats gaining ground in red-state Senate seats that once looked like long shots, from Georgia to Montana to Kansas. There’s a growing chance that Democrats may capture control of the Senate with a seat or two to spare.

“The current political environment is reminiscent of 2008, two years after Democrats swept control of the House and Senate under President George W. Bush. It’s mostly remembered for Barack Obama’s historic election, but the Democrats’ downballot dominance was just as remarkable. Riding deep dissatisfaction with GOP leadership, Democrats expanded their Senate majority to a near filibuster-proof margin and won House seats in some of the most reliably conservative territory in the country.”

BUT...BUT WASN'T GEORGIA SUPPOSED TO BE SOLID REPUBLICAN?

Dead Heat In Georgia
May 13, 2020 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“An internal poll conducted by a group backing Gov. Brian Kemp (R) showed a deadlocked presidential race in Georgia and tight contests for both U.S. Senate seats, underscoring the challenges Republicans face keeping the state in the GOP column,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“The poll pegged Joe Biden at 47% of support and President Trump with 46%, within the margin of error of 4 percentage points. A small number of voters – just 5% – said they were undecided and 2% declined to answer.”

27 Million Have Lost Their Health Insurance
May 13, 2020 at 7:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Roughly 27 million people have likely have lost job-based health coverage since the coronavirus shocked the economy, according to new estimates from the Kaiser Family Foundation,” Axios reports.

“Most of these people will be able sign up for other sources of coverage, but millions are still doomed to be uninsured in the midst of a pandemic.”

Trump Reverts to Tactic of Accusing Foes of Felonies
May 13, 2020 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Washington Post:
“Since writing ‘HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY’ at 8:10 a.m. on Sunday, Trump has used his Twitter account to make or elevate allegations of criminal conduct against no less than 20 individuals and organizations.

"Since Sunday, he has tweeted more often about alleged crimes by his perceived opponents than he has about the pandemic ravaging the country with mass death and unemployment.

“The list of purported culprits Trump has charged include
two television news hosts,
a comedian,
at least five former officials from the FBI and Justice Department,
the state of California,
a broadcast television station
and at least five top national security officials from President Barack Obama’s administration.”

*** NOTICE OF CONSTANT SPAMMING and USE OF TAEGAN GODDARD's POLITICAL_LIRE ***

Regular readers of this blog know the constant spamming, lying and obsession for that left-wing Taegan Goddard blog by a cerain poster. That poster james, also called the "pastor" (which he claims to be even if you can't tell by his actions) is the POS responsible and considers his mindless rude behavior his hobby.

He has descended so far into TDS and desperation he fills every discussion thread with what people have described as an avalanche of spam. Today is no different. He even gets his edited news from that site. Every day he repeats what that site posts, regardless of topic. It gets so bad he feels the need to even repeat his spam multiple times in a single thread as well as posting in every active thread the very same spam.

He has exhibited the same mental deterioration as Joe Biden and his postings should be given the same consideration. Both their heads will probably explode when it becomes obvious that Trump will win a second term. Biden will not even notice his head did.

got a new boilerplate, look forward to using it anytime necessary. I'll count on the "pastor" to note any grammatical errors, that's his whole game.
