Death toll rises in Georgia as Governor Kemp reopens state
So let's start with the opening paragraph:Some states, including Texas and Tennessee, have seen spikes in new coronavirus cases and deaths following the relaxation of social distancing measures. A model from researchers previously based at MIT previously projected that the death rate could double after lifting social distancing measures in Georgia.
First of all Texas has not seen a "spike" in new cases. They had peaked at around 1441 back in mid April and have not reached that plateau again. Yesterday they reported approximately 850 cases. Today they have reported less than 400. Tennessee saw a two day increase (which would not have had anything do with reopening) and since then, the numbers have been normal, if not falling. Secondly, an MIT model is not a fact. It's a guess.
Moving on to what is actually happening:
Still, Gov. Brian Kemp lifted the statewide shelter-in-place order for most residents on May 1, with the exception of the elderly and “medically fragile.” Since then, there have been 155 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to state data, and six deaths.
At the same time, the number of new cases has been declining over time. After reaching a peak of 898 new cases on April 20, the next highest was 788 on April 27 and has dropped off significantly since then. However, the state tracker says that some confirmed cases over the last 14 days may not yet be accounted for due to pending test results or unreported illnesses.
So there really isn't any indication that there actually has been a rise in cases or deaths, although they suggest that the data is incomplete. For reference, New York (which is still shut down) reported over a 1000 deaths since May 1st vs the single digit daily reported by Georgia.
But wait... there is more to the story. Perhaps the ending will provide some cover for a giant headline that doesn't appear to be justified by the story itself.
The pandemic has disproportionately affected the black population in Georgia, which makes up about 32 percent of the total population. More than 10,000 COVID-19 patients are black, out of 29,011 cases in the state as of May 4, which is greater than any other racial group.
Well there you have it. The headline might be bogus, but we now know that the Covid-19 virus is racist.

Americans clearly oppose the reopening of restaurants, retail stores and other businesses, even as governors begin to lift restrictions that have kept the economy locked down in an effort to combat the coronavirus pandemic, according to a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll.
The opposition expressed by sizable majorities of Americans reflects other cautions and concerns revealed in the survey, including continuing fears among most people that they could become infected by the coronavirus, as well as a belief that the worst of the medical crisis is not yet over.
About half of states have eased restrictions on businesses, but Americans’ unease about patronizing them represents a major hurdle to restarting the economy. Many Americans have been making trips to grocery stores and 56 percent say they are comfortable doing so. But 67 percent say they would be uncomfortable shopping at a retail clothing store, and 78 percent would be uncomfortable eating at a sit-down restaurant. People in states with looser restrictions report similar levels of discomfort as those in states with stricter rules.
Americans continue to give President Trump negative marks for his response to the outbreak, while offering widely positive assessments of their state governors, a trend that has been consistent throughout the pandemic.
Trump’s ratings are 44 percent positive and 56 percent negative, in line with where he was two weeks ago and only slightly worse than a week ago. Governors earn positive marks from 75 percent of Americans, about the same as a week ago. Partisan differences remain sizable, with nearly 8 in 10 Republicans but just about 2 in 10 Democrats rating Trump positively. In contrast, governors earn big positive majorities across the parties.
Americans also overwhelmingly approve of the way federal public health scientists, including Anthony S. Fauci, have dealt with the challenges from the coronavirus. Fauci’s positive rating stands at 74 percent
