Now if things react the way that they have over the past two-three weeks, these numbers will likely go up (rather than down) starting today or tomorrow. But the good news is that these numbers were actually a fairly reasonable drop from last weekend's numbers. It's starting to look like we are past the plateau and on the way down.
Now the argument rages about what will happen when states start to reopen. Let me explain this in a way that everyone should understand.
It doesn't matter.
We cannot stay locked down forever and there is no empirical evidence at this point to suggest that waiting another week or month is going to change what happens once society reengages. Either the virus will start spreading again, or it won't. That is just as true today as it will be next week, or as it will be next month.
In fact, there is still no empirical evidence that areas of the world that locked down are in any better position today than the areas of the world that didn't lock down. In the United States, the States that shut down early didn't produce any sort of slower spread than the states who did nothing. It appears (empirically) to have hit urban and densely populated areas more heavily regardless of the response.
More to the point. Nobody actually knows what is going to happen when we lift the house arrests. Not Fauci, not Birx, not the doctors on the front lines, not the President, and certainly not the Governors. We are no longer guided by the original concept of flattening the curve (that ship sailed weeks ago). We are not guided now by what appears to be little more than raw fear mongering, dishonesty, and (go figure) political partisanship.

Rather, it only might have seemed such because it was mistakenly compared to the number of deaths reported on the CDC’s COVID-19 Cases in the U.S. page, which as of May 3, 2020, displayed a total of 65,735 deaths:
