Some (ahem) wonderful Minnesota news

Trump Admin Denies Minneapolis $500m Riot Damage Bailout Request

More Than 150 Minneapolis Police Officers File PTSD Claims, Prepare To Leave The Force

Twenty percent of Minneapolis Police planning to quit
the force and the numbers are going to continue to rise
A lawyer who represents police officers has been contacted by more than 150 current officers who seek to file for disability benefits, a move taken before they leave the force. Most of the officers claim they are suffering from PTSD and that the stressful situation since the killing of George Floyd has become the last straw.

Shooting in Minneapolis are double that of last year

More than 240 people have been shot, 13 fatally, since May 25, according to police. On Thursday evening, nine people were shot and one was killed in a span of six hours. One of the wounded was a pregnant woman.
More than 1,500 instances of gunfire have been reported across the city, nearly double the number during the same period a year ago, according to police data citing 911 calls and ShotSpotter technology. Police scanner traffic has been jammed with reports of other violent incidents, including robberies and carjackings.

Ten to one, if you took a poll right now in Minnesota, our Governor's approval ratings have probably improved dramatically since the whole thing started. The strategy seems pretty foolproof if you are a Democratic Governor. Just fuck things up beyond all belief. Make every decision wrong. Use horrible data to justify sill decisions. Stick with both the horrible data and the bad decisions through thick and thin.

Then blame the President for everything that you fucked up... even if he had nothing to do with it.

We see it work every single day with liberals across the country.

THINGS ARE LOOKING REALLY GOOD FOR TRUMP

‘In the Real Polls We’re Doing Very Well’

“President Trump’s management of this summer’s crises has triggered what Democrats detect as a tectonic shift in the political landscape, with party leaders suddenly bullish about not only taking back the White House but also wresting control of the Senate, as well as expanding their House majority,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump’s incumbent advantages have steadily eroded since the spring, with the president now trailing presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in virtually every public poll nationally and in battleground states, as well as lagging behind the former vice president in fundraising for May and June.”

“Trump and his advisers insist that their campaign’s internal data show the race as more competitive — ‘In the real polls, we are doing very well,’ the president claimed Friday — and that he can gain momentum in the weeks ahead with a disciplined message and a brutal, sustained assault on Biden’s character, ideology and mental acuity.”
___________

WELL, ACTUALLY NOT SO GOOD...

Virus Reshapes Presidential Race In Sun Belt

CBS News Poll: “The coronavirus outbreak is reshaping the presidential race in three key Sun Belt states. Joe Biden is now leading President Trump by six points in Florida, and the two are tied in Arizona and competitive in Texas, where Biden is down by just a point to Mr. Trump.”

“Biden has made gains in part because most say their state’s efforts to contain the virus are going badly — and the more concerned voters are about risks from the outbreak, the more likely they are to support Biden.”

ACTUALLY, NOT GOOD AT ALL

Biden Builds Lead In Texas

A new Dallas Morning News-University of Texas Tyler poll in Texas finds Joe Biden leading Donald Trump in the presidential race, 46% to 41% with 14% undecided.

TEXAS WOULD ABSOLUTELY SINK TRUMP.

AND HERE COMES MORE TROUBLE?

Tammy Duckworth Bursts In VP Contention

Politico: “Tammy Duckworth is no longer an afterthought in the Democratic veepstakes.”

“The Illinois senator and Purple Heart recipient has landed squarely in the conversation after a high-profile clash with Tucker Carlson last week and her advocacy against politicization of the military in the weeks prior.

“The attention hasn’t escaped Biden’s vetting team. It has stepped up information-gathering on Duckworth recently, scrutinizing her legislative record and talking to her colleagues.”

Florida Shatters Single-Day Infection Record

Florida reported another record-breaking number of coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, logging 15,300 new positive cases.

The Washington Post reports it’s THE MOST by any state in a single day since the pandemic reached the United States.

Florida is set to hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville next month and has ordered schools to reopen five days a week.

WILL STATE AUTHORITIES ACTUALLY GO AHEAD AND DANGEROUSLY REOPEN SCHOOLS?

WILL THE CONVENTION EVEN TAKE PLACE?
WILL IT TAKE PLACE INDOORS?
WILL PEOPLE NOT MAINTAIN DISTANCING?

Virus DEATHS Take Long-Expected Turn for the Worse

Associated Press:
“A long-expected upturn in U.S. coronavirus deaths has begun, driven by fatalities in states in the South and West, according to data on the pandemic. The number of deaths per day from the virus had been falling for months, and even remained down as states like Florida and Texas saw explosions in cases and hospitalizations — and reported daily U.S. infections broke records several times in recent days.

“Scientists warned it wouldn’t last.
A coronavirus death, when it occurs, typically comes several weeks after a person is first infected.
And experts predicted states that saw increases in cases and hospitalizations would, at some point, see deaths rise too.
Now that’s happening.”

CH TRIED TO MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT THE FACT THAT CASES WERE GOING UP, BUT NOT DEATHS.

NOW DEATHS ARE RISING TOO.

ALMOST EVERYTHING CH HAS EVER SAID ABOUT THE VIRUS IN HIS CRAVEN LOYALTY TO TRUMP'S OVERWEENING IGNORANCE HAS BEEN PROVED WRONG.

Mounting Evidence Points to Covid Refugees from Mexico as a Major Factor in Border-State Spikes

Evidence continues to mount that spikes in Covid cases in U.S. border states are due to successive waves of infected people fleeing Mexico's dysfunctional and overwhelmed hospitals to get American medical care at least as much, if not more than, to the re-opening of those states' economies. This matters because officials in border states are beginning to base policy decisions for partial lock-downs on grounds that lifting them is what caused the spikes.

Although the states and hospitals do not release nationality or immigration status information, several Border Patrol agents told the Center for Immigration Studies that, per policy, they have been transporting to U.S. care facilities increasing numbers of illegal Central American border-crossers they apprehend who report Covid-like symptoms, as well as Cubans, Venezuelans, Ecuadorans, and other nationalities.

Florida migrant towns become coronavirus hot spots in U.S.

Per capita, Florida ranks relatively low in its rate of new COVID-19 cases, at about 31st in the country, according to data complied by Johns Hopkins University. But the state has seen an upswing in new COVID-19 cases since it began gradually lifting restrictions on businesses and movement last month, especially in the past week. The increase may at least partly be due to expanded testing. Still, the uptick has been pronounced in some communities, including Immokalee.

The secluded town of 25,000 north of the Everglades has reported more than 1,000 cases, outpacing in recent weeks the rate of infection in Orlando, which has a population 10 times bigger and is home to a busy international airport. The number of total cases in Immokalee has surpassed those in Miami Beach, with more than 900, and St. Petersburg, which has more than 800, according to state health department statistics.

Meanwhile, the percentage of tests that have come back positive in Collier County, home to Immokalee, is the highest in the state among counties that have tested more than 5,000 people.

Sales Perez knows many people who have gotten sick in this rural town known for its tomato farms. A close friend got ill, the friend’s brother was hospitalized and a cousin of the two brothers died with the virus.

Outbreaks have also erupted in other impoverished and immigrant communities in rural Florida, such as Indiantown, a small community with a large population of Guatemalan and Mexican immigrants northwest of West Palm Beach, and Belle Glade, a predominantly black town south of Lake Okeechobee.

Phoenix AZ, and Texas counties order MORGUE TRUCKS in latest grim sign of rising COVID-19 rates

HuffPost Jul 12th

Morgue trucks are being ordered by Texas counties and Phoenix, Arizona, as the skyrocketing number of COVID-19 cases in the states move into the next chilling phase: an overwhelming death toll.

Even as Arizona county morgues are reaching capacity, White House officials insisted to Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego recently that everything is under control and that she’s being too demanding reaching out for help, she told local ABC15 TV Friday.

“I’m heartbroken ... it’s been a rough week for me,” Gallego said. “We are losing too many Arizonans,” she added, and again urged Republican Gov. Doug Ducey to mandate face masks in public throughout the state. She and other mayors are also pleading with Ducey to restrict business activity to help stem the spread of the disease.

The morgue at Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, is at 96% capacity. The Maricopa County Unified Command Center is working with the local Department of Emergency Management to “secure a contract for refrigerator trucks” to serve as makeshift morgues, officials said in a statement.

The city’s largest hospital network, Abrazos Health, has also ordered “refrigerated storage,” even though it currently has “adequate morgue space,” according to officials.

Arizona is steadily breaking records for daily new cases of COVID-19. Cases in the state hit nearly 120,000 Saturday after jumping 3,038 in a single day, with a total of 2,151 deaths, according to the state health department.

Gallego said Phoenix is the “largest city in the country that has not yet received federal surge testing” help, even though she has been requesting it “for months.”

The Trump administration told Gallego to send residents to Walgreens for testing, triggering long lines in crushing Arizona heat for some 50 available tests at the stores.

Federal officials recently told Gallego that they will step up testing efforts.

Morgues are also overwhelmed in Texas, where COVID-19 cases hit another daily record Saturday of 10,351, pushing the total to more than 250,000,000 with a total so far of 3,112 deaths.

The morgue in Nueces County, where Corpus Christi is located, hit capacity Wednesday and ordered a second refrigerated truck from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Guatemala limits deportations from the U.S. as coronavirus cases surge in both countries

The Guatemalan government has placed a cap on the number of people the U.S. can deport on a weekly basis, a spokesperson for the Central American country’s government told the Miami Herald.

The new measures, which went into effect about three weeks ago, were launched because the country says it has continued to receive U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportees with coronavirus, said Ana Patricia Letona, a spokesperson for Guatemala’s foreign ministry.

“Due to current restrictions and to not overrun the country’s capacity, there are currently only two weekly flights with a total of 50 passengers each. This way, we can monitor and track each person before they are sent to their communities,” Letona said, noting that the new measures are in stark contrast to how many deportees the country was accepting monthly before the pandemic, which was about 4,000.

In March that number went down to about 1,900, Letona said. As cases of COVID-19 continued to surge globally in April and May, and the number of deportees with COVID-19 being repatriated began to climb, the country began accepting about 700 a month. However now, Guatemalan officials are only accepting about 100 people a week, or about 400 a month.

The country’s tight deportation restrictions have created an overwhelming backlog of Guatemalan nationals stuck in ICE detention who are waiting to be deported, according to detainees, immigration lawyers and advocates.

L.A. teachers union says schools can't reopen unless charter schools get shut down, police defunded

A major teachers union is claiming that the re-opening of schools in its district cannot occur without several substantial policy provisions in place, including a "moratorium" on charter schools and the defunding of local police.

United Teachers Los Angeles, a 35,000-strong union in the Los Angeles Unified School District, made those demands in a policy paper it released this week. The organization called on local authorities to "keep school campuses closed when the semester begins on Aug. 18."

The union outlined numerous major provisions it says will be necessary to reopen schools again, including sequestering students in small groups throughout the school day, providing students with masks and other forms of protective equipment, and re-designing school layouts in order to facilitate "social distancing."

"The 28-mile trip was unremarkable. The motorcade used the normal protocol for golf trips, led by a police car and using lights and sirens as necessary to stay together through red lights and to discourage other traffic from cutting into the line of black SUVs and vans.

Some pedestrians at the end held out cell phones to take video. Others flipped us off.

At the entrance were a small group of protesters, including one dressed as the grim reaper, carrying a scythe sign reading “137K.”

Today marks the president’s 86th day trip to Sterling.

It’s Trump’s Call on GOP Convention

“After months of insisting that the Republican National Convention go off as scheduled despite the pandemic, President Donald Trump is slowly coming to accept that the late August event will not be the four-night infomercial for his reelection that he had anticipated,” the AP reports.

“After a venue change,
spiking coronavirus cases and
a sharp recession,
Trump aides and allies are increasingly questioning whether it’s worth the trouble,
and some are advocating that the convention be scrapped altogether.

Conventions are meant to lay out a candidate’s vision for the coming four years, not spark months of intrigue over the health and safety of attendees, they have argued.

“Ultimately, the decision on whether to move forward will be Trump’s alone.”

Science!!

A commentary published in the journal Pediatrics, the official peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, concludes that children infrequently transmit COVID-19 to each other or to adults and that many schools, provided they follow appropriate social distancing guidelines and take into account rates of transmission in their community, can and should reopen in the fall.

The authors, Benjamin Lee, M.D. and William V. Raszka, Jr., M.D., are both pediatric infectious disease specialists on the faculty of the University of Vermont's Larner College of Medicine. Dr. Raszka is an associate editor of Pediatrics.

The authors of the commentary, titled "COVID-19 Transmission and Children: The Child Is Not to Blame," base their conclusions on a new study published in the current issue of Pediatrics, "COVID-19 in Children and the Dynamics of Infection in Families," and four other recent studies that examine COVID-19 transmission by and among children.

CONCLUSIONS
In a population-based study in Iceland, children under 10 years of age and females had a lower incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection than adolescents or adults and males. If you are pro reopening schools this fall, please read these points and actively think about them.

Questions for School Openings:

• If a teacher tests positive for COVID-19 are they required to quarantine for 2-3 weeks? Is their sick leave covered, paid?

• If that teacher has 5 classes a day with 30 students each, do all 150 of those students need to then stay home and quarantine for 14 days?

• Do all 150 of those students now have to get tested? Who pays for those tests? Are they happening at school? How are the parents being notified? Does everyone in each of those kids' families need to get tested? Who pays for that?

• What if someone who lives in the same house as a teacher tests positive? Does that teacher now need to take 14 days off of work to quarantine? Is that time off covered? Paid?

• Where is the district going to find a substitute teacher who will work in a classroom full of exposed, possibly infected students for substitute pay?

• Substitutes teach in multiple schools. What if they are diagnosed with COVID-19? Do all the kids in each school now have to quarantine and get tested? Who is going to pay for that?

• What if a student in your kid's class tests positive? What if your kid tests positive? Does every other student and teacher they have been around quarantine? Do we all get notified who is infected and when? Or because of HIPAA regulations are parents and teachers just going to get mysterious “may have been in contact” emails all year long?

• What is this stress going to do to our teachers? How does it affect their health and well-being? How does it affect their ability to teach? How does it affect the quality of education they are able to provide? What is it going to do to our kids? What are the long-term effects of consistently being stressed out?

• How will it affect students and faculty when the first teacher in their school dies from this? The first parent of a student who brought it home? The first kid?

• How many more people are going to die, that otherwise would not have if we had stayed home longer?

30% of the teachers in the US are over 50. About 16% of the total deaths in the US are people between the ages of 45-65.
We are choosing to put our teachers in danger.

These are nothing more than straw men. What we do know is that we robbed our children out of nearly a year of development which is forever and will effect the child for the rest of his/her life.

So Roger says lets rob children out of another year of their lives because some teacher might be scared to get the disease.

If the teacher is scared then let them quit. There are plenty people who will take the job.

What’s happening

When President Ronald Reagan left office, he defined America as a “shining city on a hill,” a country that other nations would look to as a model of prosperity and freedom. Reagan, like many other presidents and politicians, lauded the country for its “American exceptionalism,” the set of beliefs that the country’s history, values and politics make it distinct and worthy of respect and leadership on the world stage.

But amid dueling crises — the coronavirus pandemic and the racial reckoning — belief in American exceptionalism has been deeply shaken. A staggering 62 percent of Americans no longer see their country as the “shining city on a hill” that Reagan once imagined, a Yahoo News/YouGov poll revealed. Outside the U.S., Europeans’ trust in America has also deteriorated, according to a European Council on Foreign Relations poll.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Americans are facing the highest coronavirus case count and death toll in the world, a lack of national pandemic strategy and a financial crisis, while grappling with the country’s dark racial legacy. Doctors lack proper personal protective equipment, governors have been left to handle their states’ responses without much aid from the federal government, and hospitals in multiple states have been overwhelmed to the point of having no ICU beds. The pandemic’s effects on health and unemployment have hit communities of color the hardest, especially Black, Latino and Native American populations. And months into the crisis, Americans marched for racial justice as the protests against the police killings of Black Americans became what may be the largest protest movement in the history of the country.

Why there’s debate

The U.S. coronavirus response and the racial reckoning have brought into question where America stands on the world stage. Most agree — and polls show — that the U.S.’s response to the pandemic has negatively affected its global reputation.

Some believe this is the end of American exceptionalism. They say the public health crisis marks the end of America’s status as a superpower, as international health experts criticize the country’s virus response. They point to many pandemic response failures — from the country’s inability to produce even the most basic medical equipment for its health care workers to its struggle to restart sports. It’s time for America to learn from the rest of the world on the coronavirus response, they say. America’s standing in the world order may shift soon, they warn, pointing to the possibility of the crash of the U.S. dollar and the decline of the value of an American passport.

Others point to America’s failures to grapple with its racist past. They say the structures that caused the racial injustice now being protested have been in place for decades, and the pandemic and recent police killings of Black Americans simply forced them into the spotlight, causing many white Americans to reckon with them for the first time. American exceptionalism has always been hypocritical, they say, arguing that the country struggles to fix its own problems while proclaiming its superiority to the rest of the world.

American exceptionalism has always been hypocritical, they say, arguing that the country struggles to fix its own problems while proclaiming its superiority to the rest of the world.

But while the pandemic has mostly brought pity and criticism from other nations and frustration within American borders, the mass protests for racial justice have also brought, for some, a reason to hope. When thousands of Americans marched for justice, citizens of other countries followed suit, spilling into the streets. Some say this shows that other nations still look at America as a model for social change. The decline of American exceptionalism, they say, could ultimately be what makes the country stronger than ever before.

Sen. Cornyn says
‘we still don’t know’ if kids can get COVID,
as Texas reports 550 cases

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said during a TV interview on Thursday that it’s unclear whether children can get and transmit COVID-19. That same day, Texas reported more than 550 COVID infections in children 9 and younger.

Cornyn’s comment comes as the Trump administration has pushed this week for schools to reopen in the fall, with the president going as far as to threaten to cut off federal funding for those that don’t. In Texas, officials have said schools must reopen in August with few exceptions.

Asked about reopening schools, Cornyn said during an interview on NBCDFW that “the most important thing is safety.”

“The schools can open but if parents don’t feel comfortable sending their children back, then they won’t,” Cornyn said. “I think we’ve got a long way to go in regaining their confidence.”

He continued:
“The good news is, if you look at the numbers, no one under the age of 20 has died of coronavirus.”

“We still don’t know whether children can get it and transmit it to others," he said.

Texas reported 1,722 confirmed cases in people 19 and younger, including 550 in children 9 and younger as of Thursday.

At least one Texan under the age of 18 is reported to have died from the coronavirus, a 17-year-old girl from Lancaster, who died in April, according to health officials there, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Cornyn’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but told the TV station that the senator “could have been more precise with his language.” Cornyn’s staff says he was referring to a tweet from Scott Gottlieb, the former commissioner of Food and Drugs, that said: “Balance of data clearly shows they’re less likely to become infected and less likely to transmit infection.

“But IMHO we need to have humility on this question and recognize we don’t fully understand all the risks; and while kids are less vulnerable, less risk doesn’t mean no risk,” Gottlieb said in the tweet.

The Democrats’ vying to take on Cornyn in November hammered him for the comments on Friday.

Royce West, a longtime state Senator from Dallas, called Cornyn’s remarks “irresponsible and asinine.”

“The problem here is that John Cornyn has lost touch with Texas,” West said. “If he had closer connections to the people, and to more families who have been impacted by this terrible disease, he wouldn’t engage in such irresponsible conduct.”

Former Air Force pilot MJ Hegar said “it is inexcusable that once again Senator Cornyn, who is tasked with making critical decisions about our government’s response to COVID-19, doesn’t know basic publicly available information about it.

“For the health and safety of Texans, it is time to send Cornyn packing,” Hegar said.

First cases of coronavirus-related inflammatory syndrome identified in children in South Carolina
7 hrs ago

Two children in South Carolina have been diagnosed with the coronavirus-related pediatric inflammatory syndrome, according to the state's Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The children are both under the age of 10, DHEC said in a news release Sunday. One is located in the Midlands region in central South Carolina. The other is in the Pee Dee region in the northeastern part of the state.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C, is a potential complication seen in some children and teenagers following Covid-19 infections or exposure to those with Covid-19.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health advisory to doctors across the country in May, warning them to be on the lookout for the syndrome. Symptoms include fever, stomach pain, vomiting, a rash and fatigue, according to the CDC.

"We continue to see more and more young people, especially those under 20, contracting and spreading COVID-19, and we know MIS-C is a threat to our youngest South Carolinians," State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said in a news release. "MIS-C is a serious health complication linked to COVID-19 and is all the more reason why we must stop the spread of this virus.

"Anyone and everyone is susceptible to COVID-19 as well as additional health risks associated with it, which is why all of us must stop the virus by wearing a mask and stay six feet away from others," Ball said. "These simple actions are how we protect ourselves and others, including our children."

Experts are still learning about MIS-C and trying to determine why some children experience it while others do not.

But two recent studies -- both published last month in the New England Journal of Medicine -- show MIS-C can cause serious symptoms and is potentially fatal. They showed that 80% of patients with MIS-C required treatment in intensive care.

In one report, CDC researchers analyzed 186 cases from 26 states between March 15 and May 20.

Patients were hospitalized for a median of seven days and 20% required ventilation to help them breathe. Four patients, or 2%, died. The median age of patients was 8 years old. Just 7% of patients were under a year old, most of the rest were between a year old and 14, and 16% were aged 15 to 20.

The second report, by the New York State Department of Health, examined 99 children with suspected or confirmed MIS-C who were hospitalized between March 1 and May 20. In that study, the median hospital stay was six days.
