This outta "improve" Seattle!

Seattle Reconfiguring Hiring To Favor “Social Justice Advocates”

Despite all of the damage and unrest, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan is still refusing any federal help in restoring the rule of law to her city. If they’re going to handle the problem themselves, so be it, I suppose. But what does she plan to do? In yet another instance of bowing to mob rule, Durkan and the City Council have decided that the way to calm the masses is to change the way they hire municipal government workers. What that has to do with the death of George Floyd is anyone’s guess, but the new plan certainly sounds woke enough to fit the 2020 narrative. Going forward, if you want a job with the city, you’ll need to prove your social justice credentials before anyone worries about whether or not you’re actually qualified for the job you’re seeking. (Free Beacon)

Just when you think you have some of the dumbest local politicians in the country, another city steps up and says "hold my beer". Well technically I have a house in the suburbs of Minneapolis / St Paul and an alternate home in Seattle, so I guess they're both sort of my "local politicians" at this point. Just have to bang my head against the wall regardless of where I am.

Tomorrow my wife is heading downtown Seattle for a ballet class, which I would normally accompany her since I always enjoy that area of the city... but with everything else going on, it looks like a quiet Friday night hanging out at home. While we technically have a Seattle address, we are far enough away from downtown that none of this affects us where we live. But it sure has taken it's toll on the social life.

A Democratic Senate Is Looking More Likely
Jessica Taylor
notes that in the five U.S. Senate races the Cook Political Report currently rates as Toss Ups — Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Montana and North Carolina — Democrats outraised Republicans by about $42.6 million to $24.1 million in the second quarter — a difference of $18.5 million.

Jonathan Bernstein:
“The longer this election cycle goes on, the better the prospects for Democrats have looked. Right now, they not only have raised more money, but actually have an apparent polling lead in all five of those toss-up races, according to the RealClearPolitics averages, although several states (especially Montana) have had limited surveys so far.

“The Cook Report lists five more contests, including Alabama, as leaning Republican. If Trump really is down by nine points or so nationally, then it’s possible Democrats could pick off one or two of them…

“The real blowout possibilities start to kick in if Trump slips a little more. Then it starts to look possible for Democrats to win four of the five lean-Republican seats, or even one or two of the four likely Republican contests. In that case, the possibility of an aggressive legislative agenda starts to look much more likely. “

Trump’s 50% Problem
First Read says President Trump has a 50% problem:
50% of all registered voters in our poll “strongly” disapprove of the president.
50% say there is no chance at all they will vote for him.
50% say they’re “very uncomfortable” about his candidacy.
51% are backing Joe Biden in the horserace, versus 40% for Trump.
“One of the old maxims of American politics used to be that an incumbent (for any office) needs to be at 50% to be safe for re-election* — otherwise there’s a majority of voters who exist that don’t support him or her. But Trump has a different problem at hand: He’s got 50% (or more) of the national electorate saying they strongly oppose him.”

*Yep. That's what Ch used to say.

Trump’s Virus Non-Message
The Wall Street Journal editorial board:
“A more significant reason voters are souring on Mr. Trump’s virus management is his unwillingness to be candid or consistent about the disease’s likely toll…

“Mr. Trump’s messaging has caromed from saying the virus isn’t a problem, to the economy must shut down to crush it, to the economy must open and everything will soon go back to normal, to barely talking about it at all as cases rise. Now his aides are filling the vacuum by attacking the government health expert who sees it as his role to warn of worst-case scenarios.

“This is a mess, and if it continues Republicans will be routed in November…”

NATE COHN SAYS:
Even If the Polls Are Really Off, Trump Is Still In Trouble
“With Joe Biden claiming almost a double-digit lead in national polls, one question still seems to loom over the race: Can we trust the polls after 2016?

“It’s a good question. But for now, it’s not as important as you might guess. If the election were held today, Mr. Biden would win the presidency, even if the polls were exactly as wrong as they were four years ago.

“The reason is simple: His lead is far wider than Hillary Clinton’s was in the final polls, and large enough to withstand another 2016 polling meltdown.”

Team Trump Plots New Ways to Make Him Feel Good
Daily Beast: “As Trump’s re-election campaign has struggled to tear down former Vice President Joe Biden with less than four months until Election Day, the president’s staff have devoted considerable resources to finding novel ways to make him feel better about the crumbling world around him.

“They tell him tales of his sagging poll numbers being fake. They’ve concocted ways of convincing him that the adoring crowds he loves on the campaign trail are still there and ready. They’ve pledged that the social, racial, and economic crises ravaging the nation are ephemeral. And they’ve carried his water as he seeks to reassert his authority over situations falling beyond his control.”

"Republicans are sounding alarms after Democratic Senate candidates outraised their GOP opponents in the first six months of the year, a gulf driven largely by small-dollar online contributions,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Democratic candidates in the 11 most competitive Senate races collectively raised $67.3 million in the second quarter of the year, $20.5 million more than their Republican counterparts, according to fundraising reports filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission. The total includes two Republicans who gave almost $6.5 million to their own campaigns.”

Mary Trump said she blames “almost 100 percent” her grandfather, Fred Trump — the family patriarch whom she describes as a “sociopath” in her 214-page memoir of sorts — for creating the conditions that led to Trump’s rise and, ultimately, what she views as his dangerous presidency.

Axios

President Trump demoted campaign manager Brad Parscale and replaced him with his deputy, hours after a brutal new round of polls showed Trump losing five of six swing states — and sinking into a double-digit hole nationally.

Why it matters: Trump's announcement — on Facebook, in the midst of a Twitter outage — shows that he knows he's losing. It's obvious to all around him: All the data shows it. The family knows it. And with 110 days until the election, the president now admits it.

A recent spate of Fox News polls particularly infuriated Trump, Axios' Alayna Treene hears.

One official said Trump still brings up a warning by Fox News' Tucker Carlson last month that Trump "could well lose."Look for more changes to come.

The towering Parscale is a longtime Trump family digital guru who engineered the online side of Trump's 2016 upset.

He gets to stay, demoted to senior adviser. Trump really can't fire Brad: He knows too much, and he built the digital infrastructure the campaign relies on.He was replaced by his deputy, Bill Stepien, a Trump loyalist and longtime Republican operative. Stepien worked on Trump's 2016 campaign, then was White House political director before moving to the campaign.

One top Republican told me Stepien, who once was Chris Christie's top aide, is an expert at a vital skill in Trumpworld — candidate management.

Another power center is senior adviser Jason Miller, effectively the campaign's chief strategist, who has frequent conversations with Trump.

Behind the scenes: Trump lost confidence in Parscale after the Tulsa debacle, Axios' Jonathan Swan reports.

The switch is partly cosmetic: Jared Kushner — who gave Parscale the news that he was out — was calling the shots before, and calls them now.

What's next: A Trump confidant tells me the campaign believes it can make up ground with suburban voters by trying to tie Joe Biden to calls to defund police.

"I look forward to having a big and very important second win," Trump said on Facebook. "This one should be a lot easier as our poll numbers are rising fast, the economy is getting better, vaccines and therapeutics will soon be on the way, and Americans want safe streets and communities!"

The best text I got when the news broke: "The real campaign manager reports to the Oval every day, anyways."

That, of course, is Donald Trump.

He needs his advisers to suck his mushroom penis.

Activist Angela Davis said in an interview that resurfaced this week she’s rallying behind Joe Biden because it’s crucial to back the candidate “who can be most effectively pressured” by the left.

In the interview, which took place in November 2019 on the YouTube show Going Underground With Afshin Rattansi, Davis admitted neither Joe Biden or President Donald Trump reflects her political views. However, she said Biden is far more likely to take mass demands seriously.

“I don’t see this election as being about choosing a candidate who will be able to lead us in the right direction,” said Ms. Davis in the video clip. “It will be about choosing a candidate who can be most effectively pressured into allowing more space for the evolving anti-racist movement.”

Donald may also meet some of the criteria for dependent personality disorder, the hallmarks of which include an inability to make decisions or take responsibility, discomfort with being alone, and going to excessive lengths to obtain support from others. Are there other factors that should be considered? Absolutely. He may have a long undiagnosed learning disability that for decades has interfered with his ability to process information. Also, he is alleged to drink upward of twelve Diet Cokes a day and sleep very little. Does he suffer from a substance- (in this case caffeine-) induced sleep disorder? He has a horrible diet and does not exercise, which may contribute to or exacerbate his other possible disorders. The fact is, Donald’s pathologies are so complex and his behaviors so often inexplicable that coming up with an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis would require a full battery of psychological and neuropsychological tests that he’ll never sit for. At this point, we can’t evaluate his day-to-day functioning because he is, in the West Wing, essentially institutionalized. Donald has been institutionalized for most of his adult life, so there is no way to know how he would thrive, or even survive, on his own in the real world.

The sales numbers come as the president's niece, who is also a clinical psychologist, called on Trump to resign in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos that aired on Wednesday.

“I saw firsthand what focusing on the wrong things, elevating the wrong people can do — the collateral damage that can be created by allowing somebody to live their lives without accountability,” she said. “And it is striking to see that continuing now on a much grander scale," she also told ABC.

Mary Trump's “Too Much Is Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man" was released on Tuesday, one day after a New York judge lifted a temporary restraining order preventing her from promoting the tell-all.

U.S.—Hackers have been blamed as Joe Biden posted a complete, coherent thought on Twitter earlier today.

As soon as Twitter support saw that Biden had posted several complete sentences in a tweet, they immediately locked his account down, suspecting a hack.

"The full, rational sentences were a dead giveaway," said a Twitter IT guy. "If you're gonna pretend to be Joe Biden, you have to add in several rambling asides, some made-up words, and three or four major gaffes. It clearly wasn't him, so we took steps to lock down his account."

"Hackers, you know, thhhhe--the thing that, that hacks--hackers are dangerous," said Joe Biden in a statement to the press. "Back in my day, hackers were the guys who would cut down your telegram wire and listen in on the ol' party line. My cousin, Velma, she once said..." At this point, he abruptly fell asleep.

Meanwhile, President Trump's account posted several deranged rants about random stuff, assuring everyone that his account had not been compromised.

STEPHANOPOULOS: That's exactly what the White House says. They say it's a book of falsehoods that you're writing out of financial self-interest. Basically, you're lying for money.

TRUMP: It makes perfect sense that they would say that. Projection is a powerful thing. But if I had wanted money or revenge, I would've done this ten years ago, when it was infinitely safer. And he was still a very public figure. But neither one of those things interested me. I was living my life. I was beyond -- you know, well beyond what had happened 20 years ago with my family. And it would've served no purpose, other than getting revenge or maybe making some money.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And what do you say to the people who say, "America knew exactly what they were doing when they elected Donald Trump. He's kind of an open book"? What don't they know?

TRUMP: Yeah, I don't think that's at all true. Because outside of New York, I don't think people really quite understood the truth behind his business record and his financial failures, which are legion and serial. Beyond that, it was such a complex election, there was so much going on that -- I don't think the choices -- that people had to make were necessarily based on an honest appraisal. You know, there was so much interference from so many different sources. And the other thing that I think is really important to realize -- and that I certainly didn't realize before 2016 -- was just how enabled he would be. Which maybe I should've seen coming, 'cause --

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, it's one of the things you write about. You say that --

TRUMP: Yeah.

STEPHANOPOULOS: -- basically, he was enabled -- institutionalized, is your word, his whole life. What did you mean by that?

TRUMP: As I say, there's a through-line from the house to Trump Management, which was my grandfather's company in Brooklyn, to the Trump Organization, which my grandfather helped Donald set up in Manhattan, to the White House. And those are all situations and circumstances in which Donald has always been protected and continues to be protected from his inadequacies, from his incompetence, from his lack of knowledge, from his failures.

And he's always had support of more powerful people. He's always had people protecting him from his mistakes, or from people who would try to hold him account. And he's always been amply financed. So you know, as I also write, how do we gauge this man's ability to function in the real world, as he's never really had to? And that, to me, is quite terrifying.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You're a trained clinical psychologist.

TRUMP: Yes.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You come to the conclusion he's a narcissist.

TRUMP: I avoid -- I explicitly avoid diagnosing him.

STEPHANOPOULOS: I was gonna ask about. Do you have any qualms --

TRUMP: Sure.

STEPHANOPOULOS: -- as a psychologist, laying out the possible things that he could be suffering from?

TRUMP: No. I think it's useful, especially since so many other people have done it. And I thought it was important to address that -- since it has been such an important issue -- especially given the Goldwater rule -- versus the duty to warn that a psychologist and psychiatrist have been grappling with.

So I wanted to address all of that without explicitly saying, "This is his diagnosis." He is not my patient. He's never been my patient. I do, however, have access to information about him that nobody else has had. So it was a lot easier for me to put the diagnoses that are out there in context of his developmental history.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Boil it down. What's the single most important thing you think the country needs to know about your uncle?

TRUMP: He's utterly incapable of leading this country. And it's dangerous to allow him to do so.

If someone had suggested five months ago that we would be seeing more than 3 million cases and 135,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. by mid-July, I wouldn’t have believed it.

But now it’s distinctly possible that, five months from now, half of all Americans could have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, and more than 800,000 Americans may die in this extraordinary outbreak. That is what many of our most prominent public-health experts now expect.

Could their projection models be off base? Maybe. But don’t count on it. As bad as the health consequences, disruptions, restrictions, and fear of the last five months have been, things could get a whole lot worse.

We have no plans from the President "just live with it"

President Trump has vowed that the nation’s schools must reopen for the fall semester, but neither he nor his administration has detailed a plan for how to do so safely.

Trump has boasted that the United States leads the world in coronavirus testing, yet he has declined to produce a national testing plan, and in many communities tests can take a week or longer to process, rendering their results all but useless in slowing the spread.

And with case numbers spiking from coast to coast and fears mounting of additional outbreaks this fall and winter, Trump’s most clearly articulated plan to end the covid-19 pandemic is to predict the virus will “just disappear” and to bank on a vaccine being ready “very, very soon.”
While most developed countries have managed to control the coronavirus crisis, the United States under Trump continues to spiral out of control, according to public health experts, with 3.3 million Americans infected and more than 133,000 dead.

There is no cohesive national strategy, apart from unenforced federal health guidelines. Instead, the administration is offering a patchwork of solutions, often in reaction to outbreaks after they occur. Although Trump and his team declare sweeping objectives, such as reopening schools, they have largely shirked responsibility for developing and executing plans to achieve them, putting the onus instead on state and local authorities.

Ilhem Messaoudi, an immunologist at the University of California at Irvine, likened the absence of a national plan to “going on a road trip and not having a map,” a circuitous and sickening journey that has left everyone from governors to schools superintendents to local hospital leaders “stuck in the mud” and “flailing around.”

“It’s a complete disaster,” Messaoudi said. “This is how this administration has handled this entire pandemic — conflicting messages, knee-jerk reactions, lack of cohesive plans and undermining the CDC and attacking science on a regular basis.”
Trump’s approach was on display Tuesday in the White House Rose Garden, where the president delivered a rambling, stream-of-consciousness set of remarks for 54 minutes on a medley of topics, only briefly addressed the current coronavirus surge and offered no agenda to arrest it other than a vague promise of a vaccine. Meanwhile, Trump’s advisers inside and outside the White House advanced a character assault on Anthony S. Fauci, the government’s top infectious-disease expert.

In response to a request for details of the administration’s plans on a range of coronavirus challenges — including school reopenings, testing, contact tracing and managing future outbreaks — the White House press office offered a lengthy list of actions the federal government has taken or is planning to take to support states and localities.

“President Trump has led an historic, whole-of-America coronavirus response — resulting in 100,000 ventilators procured, sourcing critical PPE [personal protective equipment] for our front line heroes, and a robust testing regime resulting in more than double the number of tests than any other country in the world,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Matthews said in an emailed statement. “This leadership will continue as we reopen the economy, expedite vaccine and therapeutics developments, and continue to see an encouraging decline in the U.S. mortality rate.”

The challenges the administration is facing, however, were underscored Sunday when Education Secretary Betsy DeVos struggled in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash to articulate a plan for schools to reopen safely for the 2020-2021 academic year starting soon.

Scaramucci Wants to See Trump ‘Humiliated’

“Merely beating Donald Trump in November won’t be enough for Anthony Scaramucci, who briefly served as the president’s communications chief but is now seeking to oust his former boss and help elect Democrat Joe Biden,” Bloomberg reports.

Said Scaramucci: “He has a chance here to really get humiliated, which I hope he will. The economy’s in shambles as a direct result of his decision making and the politicization of a health-care crisis. And so for all those reasons, he’s obviously incompetent and so we’ve got to seek his removal.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Pelosi urges Trump to 'ask for directions' on virus crisis
jul 16th 2020 2:39PM

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday compared President Donald Trump to “the man who refuses to ask for directions” as she pleaded with the White House to seek input from the nation's scientific leaders to reverse the rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths.

The Democratic speaker urged Trump to invoke the full power of the Defense Production Act to boost much-needed supplies for coronavirus testing and treatment as a weary nation battles the outbreak.

“Mr. President, admit it, you’ve gone down the wrong path, ask for directions, ask for directions from the scientists,” Pelosi said Thursday at the Capitol. "They know best."

Tensions are rising as Congress considers the next virus relief package with no apparent endgame in sight to the pandemic that now threatens longer-term economic and societal turmoil than first envisioned.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is poised to release the GOP’s $1 trillion package as soon as next week. That plan is a counteroffer to the sweeping $3 trillion proposal that House Democrats approved in May, before the latest spike in coronavirus cases and hot spots.

Months after McConnell hit “pause” on new spending, as he puts it, Republicans now face a potentially more dire situation. They had hoped the pandemic would ease and the economy would recover. Instead, coronavirus cases are spiking, states are resuming shutdowns and parents are wondering if it's safe to send children back to school.

“There were some that hoped this would go away sooner than it has,” McConnell said Wednesday during a hospital visit in Kentucky, where he urged people to WEAR MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCE.

"The straight talk here that everyone needs to understand: This is not going away," McConnell said.

This would be the fifth virus rescue bill since spring. Such an unprecedented federal intervention has occurred as Congress races to provide a comprehensive national strategy to try to bring the pandemic under control.

Polling shows Americans are increasingly uneasy over Trump’s handling of the outbreak. Members of Congress are hoping to ease the health and economic crises before many of them, like the president, face voters in November.

McConnell is straining to keep rising COVID costs down as Republicans revolt over deficit spending. But Pelosi's $3 trillion coronavirus aid bill, once dismissed by Republicans as a liberal wish list, now seems not as far-fetched.

“People are dying,” Pelosi said. “If we don’t invest the money now, it will be much worse.”

The article continues...

President Trump built his political brand by stoking the nation's culture wars, but search data is showing us how much harder it's been for him to replicate that success while running against another white man in his 70s — and while there's a coronavirus pandemic.

The big picture: Google Trends data shows Trump's "Sleepy Joe" name-calling isn't generating nearly the buzz "Crooked Hillary" (or "Little Marco") did in 2016. Base voters who relished doubting President Obama's birth certificate aren't questioning Biden's.

Tech platforms are beginning to take more responsibility. And the coronavirus is a more unifying, longer-lasting fear than the president predicted.
Why it matters: Trump's struggle to find a line of attack that takes off against Joe Biden may be driving him to diverge more politically.

Other factors are working against Trump's playbook. Tech platforms are increasingly moving to shut down hate speech and flag misinformation, killing the sources of some of Trump's favorite conspiratorial material.
And search metrics suggest that, for the most part, a nation with more than 125,000 dead from the coronavirus has less patience for the president's usual tactics.
Trump's attempts to find an alternate culture-war footing with Confederate statues and police defunding — highlighted by his Mount Rushmore speech on Friday — appear to face their own limits.

Google Trends data shows that searches for "coronavirus" are far outpacing those for "statues," "police" and "antifa."
The president's disconnect with popular sentiment on two issues of the day — the virus and protests against structural racism — has led to some self-inflicted wounds, including his sparsely attended rally in Tulsa and his tweet about an elderly Buffalo protester being shoved by police.
Trump's continued attack line about Biden "not leaving his basement" hasn't taken hold measurably with voters, according to the search data. Biden's actions in terms of social distancing largely align with a majority of voters' own anxieties.
The Trump campaign didn't respond to a request for comment.
Between the lines: Conspiracy theories that benefitted Trump in the past often were formed in dark corners of the internet before bubbling up to more mainstream pundits — but now Big Tech is more aware than ever of its influence on society.

The president's earlier lever for a Biden-linked conspiracy theory revolved around son Hunter Biden's work with the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, which Trump tweeted about last week for the first time in months.
But Ukraine attacks present some challenges for Trump. They were publicly litigated at length during his impeachment trial — and serve to remind the public that Trump was impeached only months ago.
What's next: Trump isn't changing to meet the moment. He's moving away from comprehensive police reform, digging in as a law-and-order candidate and looking for another way to mobilize against Biden that can stick.
