DNC convention tanking...

Did anyone actually realize it was happening?
Preliminary estimates show that viewership for the first night of the Democrats’ virtual convention was down compared with the opening of Hillary Clinton’s nominating party four years ago.

An estimated 18.7 million people watched coverage between 10 and 11 p.m. on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC, the Nielsen company said. Four years ago, opening night drew just under 26 million viewers.

Let's not forget that 18.7 million viewers had no other network options to watch. This all all the networks combined. Most Americans were probably streaming Netflix, watching a movie on HBO, or checking out the Impractical Jokers on TruTV. But for comparison purposes, the first season of Donald Trump's "The Apprentice" averaged just over 22 million viewers while competing against the other networks.

The only questions is whether or not Trump and the RNC will do any better?

President Donald Trump reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin several times in the years prior to running for election, according to new documents released by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Although The messages do not reveal collusion between Trump and Putin over the 2016 election. The links between his campaign and Moscow were detailed elsewhere in the report. But they do show Trump repeatedly flattering Putin, including one letter congratulating the strongman on being named Time’s “Person of the Year” in 2007. Trump told Putin: “You definitely deserve it.” He added: “I am a big fan of yours!”

And you worry about television ratings.

A virtual campaign is the first time ever.

It was necessary because the President mishandled the coronavirus pandemic in January when he said that it would just disappear.

USA TODAY
I never expected the Democratic convention to inspire me:
former Republican state chair
Jennifer Horn, Opinion contributor 1 hr ago

I am an original anti-Trump Republican. I first articulated my opposition to Donald Trump's destructive and narcissistic nature in 2011, when he was considering a run for president in the 2012 cycle. I decided then that I would never vote for him and I declared my support for Joe Biden months ago. Even so, I was unprepared to be as moved by the nature of the Democratic convention as I have been.

With the parameters dictated by COVID restrictions that prevent any large-scale gatherings like party rallies, even political insiders were anticipating that the convention would be, at best, uninteresting.

Instead, it has turned out to be some of the most inspirational programming I’ve seen in a very long time. And as a lifelong Republican who has spent much of the past 12 years advancing conservative principles and working to elect Republicans, that’s saying something.

Democrats aren't leading with anger
We are living through one of the most divided, uncertain moments in our nation’s history. America’s heart aches from the loss of over 170,000 lives in a pandemic in just five and a half months, racial unrest that has swept across the land, and economic despair, with as many as 30 million Americans unemployed.

Under the circumstances, it would have been easy for the Democrats to spend four nights trashing the president with abandon and every Republican in Washington right along with him. It would have been easy for them to give in to the urge to lead with anger and further divide our nation. Instead, they spent the first two nights trying to mend our divide, bringing together the most inclusive, bipartisan coalition of Americans in support of Joe Biden that we have ever seen.

From the National Anthem on opening night, sung by a diverse choir of singers from every state to last night’s nomination roll call that reflected the true colors of our country, to the broad collection of speakers from every race, gender and both major parties, this convention has lifted our spirits and allowed us to hope that maybe —just maybe — we could have a president who would put the unity and well-being of our nation above himself.

In a moment when Trump is trying to silence dissent and suppress the vote, the Democratic convention gives a voice to America’s diversity. The speakers list includes, among others, several Republican leaders, Latinos, African-Americans, black LGBTQ elected legislators, and dozens of strong women leaders. And 115 Native Americans from 37 different states will participate.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

It is this diversity of ethnicity, culture and thought that distinguishes this convention, not just from past Democratic events, but from the upcoming Republican convention as well. As the Democrats are expanding their reach and broadening their inclusion, Republicans are doing exactly the opposite. Under Trump, the Republican Party has shrunk and fewer and fewer Americans feel welcome in their ranks, especially minorities and women.

By contrast, women from both sides of the aisle are playing a key role in this convention. On Monday night, Christie Todd Whitman, a former Republican who was New Jersey governor and head of the Environmental Protection Agency in the George W. Bush administration, gave voice to GOP women across the country who want a president who will lead with dignity and empathy. Former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke with elegance and hope about what is possible if America chooses Joe Biden.

On Tuesday night, Cindy McCain, widow of Sen. John McCain, shared the story of the special friendship between her husband and Biden. She reminded us, just when we needed it most, that in fact there is still at least one man left in Washington willing to cross the aisle and embrace his friends on the other side.

Historic for women, minorities, USA
And Wednesday, in a momentous occasion, Sen. Kamala Harris, the daughter of Black and Indian immigrants, will become the first woman of color to win the vice presidential nomination of a major party. It is a historic moment for women, for minorities, for our country, and it lights the path for generations of young American women to follow.

Donald Trump marked it by calling her “nasty.”

In an election where women will make the difference to the outcome, and in a world where women are finally rising to the equal status they long ago earned, Democrats are embracing their leadership, respecting their experience and listening to their voices.

Donald Trump is calling them housewives and trying to scare them with rhetoric about “low income housing” coming to their suburban neighborhoods.

I am still a Republican, and I am sure I will continue to advocate for conservative governance in the years ahead. But as I watch the Democratic convention programming, filled with strong accomplished women, I feel drawn to each one of them.

When I look at the Democratic production as a whole — an amazing fabric stitched with threads of every color and design — I can’t help but wonder what next week’s Republican convention will look and sound like.

How will Donald Trump’s circus of hate and exclusion compare? The truth is, it can’t.

From four years ago.

These are my comments in response to the op/ed in the Washington Post by the former CEO of General Motors.

I am grounded in the Midwestern Values I learned from my parents. They got married in 1937, in the middle of the Great Depression, brought upon this country by a Republican President. My father was a hard working man. He took me and my younger brother fishing, hunting and spent thousands of hours with us, and taught us the trade that carried both of us through the years.

My parents made us look at the CBS news, with Walter Cronkite during the civil rights efforts and Dr Martin Luther King J. to get rid of discrimination of all kinds in our society. Donald Trump is doing his best to separate us into groups that despise each other. He has implied that people should take "second amendment" solutions if he does not win the election, because it's rigged. His allegations against those of Hispanic descent and many others, are contrary to the beliefs of Dr. King and the majority of Americans. The list of lies, distortions and hateful comments would fill a book.

I have voted in every general election since 1962. I have been watching politicians, reading history books, and paid attention to what affects each party had on the country. For the most part, although I have disagreed with and would not vote for the Republican candidate since 1980. In every one of those years, I didn't fear the opponent of the other party. If they won, it was the choice of the people. But this year is different, and sorry, it's not because I have been a victim of propaganda and told how to see this election.

I have come to a clear and rational decision that Donald J. Trump poses a threat to our great country and the world, if he is elected President of the United States, and becomes the chief executive and commander in chief of the greatest fighting force in he history of the world. Like Mr Akinson said about Hillary Clinton, she has made mistakes, but she has the capacity to learn from those mistakes. Donald J. Trump is never, ever, going to admit he made any mistakes and he will act as he and he alone, can and will make decisions that can endanger freedom, our republic and democracy that our founders gave us all those years ago. He does not have he character of judgment to sit in the Oval Office as President. He changed his story last night. I don't believe a word he said.

This is sadly a given! These terroristic groups have always existed! Decent politicians have just always kept them in check! I have confidence that our military and law enforcement will support the Constitution and the law when push comes to shove!

The racist rodent bastard is a coward

The former head of the National Counterterrorism Center said he would not be surprised if right-wing domestic terrorist groups stage attacks in the United States around this November’s presidential election.

“It certainly wouldn’t surprise me, particularly if the administration loses,” said Russ Travers, who was the center’s acting director when he was fired by President Trump’s hand-picked acting director of national intelligence.

Trump, who is behind in all national polls, has repeatedly claimed that the expected widespread use of mail-in ballots during a national pandemic will lead to “massive fraud and abuse” and an election result that is “rigged” against him. “The political rhetoric is such that you could very easily see some backlash” from white supremacist or other right-wing terror groups, Travers said.

Travers is not alone in his assessment. An Aug. 17 Department of Homeland Security analysis also warns of possible election-related attacks. “We assess ideologically-motivated violent extremists and other violent actors could quickly mobilize to threaten or engage in violence against election or campaign-related targets in response to perceived partisan and policy-based grievances,” says the document, which was obtained by Yahoo News.

While the DHS document appears to indicate that such attacks might come from across the political spectrum, white supremacists are the only group it cites specifically. “We continue to assess lone offender white supremacist extremists and other lone offender domestic terrorist actors with personalized ideologies, including those based on grievances against a target’s perceived or actual political affiliation, policies or worldview, pose the greatest threat of lethal violence,” says the document, which was prepared by DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis in coordination with several other offices, as well as with the National Counterterrorism Center.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) fired back: “It is despicable when a President of the United States thinks it is appropriate to call for a boycott of a US company where there are thousands and thousands of American workers employed.”

The company employs 60,000 people in Ohio, a battleground state.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Sources are reporting that Trump has dealt a killer blow in his ongoing war against his sworn enemy, the U.S. Post Office. In a move of sheer, mind-blowing brilliance, Trump directed the Post Office to put his face on every single stamp, forcing the Democrats to reverse course and abolish the institution once and for all.

The new stamp, dubbed "The Trump-Stamp," to be used on all pieces of mail features a smiling Donald Trump, with the caption "GREATEST PRESIDENT EVER."

Don Lemon broke the news in a tearful address to the nation last night. "Our democracy is over," he said. "It doesn't exist anymore. I will never send another piece of mail ever again, and neither should you or else you're a racist."

Antifa and BLM responded by marching on local post offices and burning them down. Enthusiastic Trump supporters quickly bought up all the stamps. They are now selling for $3,000 apiece online.

QAnon is an elaborate, unfounded conspiracy theory alleging that President Donald Trump is secretly saving the world from a group of prominent Satanic cannibals that run the world. The group has been linked to several violent, criminal incidents, including a train hijacking, kidnappings, a police chase and a murder.

The new policy states that “Pages, Groups and Instagram accounts associated with these movements and organizations will be removed when they discuss potential violence."

QAnon, militia movements and violent movements tied to protests will now no longer be allowed to purchase ads on Facebook. QAnon ads, which often pushed merchandise, were allowed on the platform before Wednesday’s announcement.

of President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has reached a new high, according to a recent CNN poll.

Fifty-eight percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s COVID-19 response and 55 percent say they think the worst is yet to come in the pandemic. People who know someone who’s contracted the virus had increased from 40 percent from a CNN poll in June to 67 percent.

Trump’s disapproval rate was in the CNN poll from early June.

The new poll was conducted from Aug. 12-15 with a sample size of 1,108 respondents and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

About 8 in 10 Americans say they are angry with how the country is going and 68 percent say they are embarrassed by the way the U.S. has responded to the pandemic, according to the poll.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Donald Trump rise to the White House can be traced to President Reagan’s economic policies that “hollowed out the middle class.”

That’s according to an economic historian who laid out a slew of sobering data on income, taxes, Chinese imports, debt and more that he connected to across-the-board tax cuts that began in 1980.

“(Reaganomics) paved the way for Trumpism,” John Komlos, a former Duke economics professor and professor emeritus of economics and economic history at the University of Munich, said last week during a talk at the John Hope Franklin Center. “That to me is where our problems started, because it created a great amount of inequality.”

Komlos cited “economic dislocations” in three Rustbelt states as one of the main reasons Trump won over voters who had gone for Barak Obama in 2008 and 2012.

This dislocation includes low and stagnating wages, increasing indebtedness, downward social mobility, declining relative incomes “and the hopelessness accompanying them while at the other end of the income distribution the economy was simply booming.”

“People without a high school diploma, they are really hurting,” Komlos said. “They are the ones that Donald Trump loves. Some people are doing marvelously, and other people are really behind the eight ball. And Trump would not have won otherwise.”

Komlos said he’s met people who support Trump simply for “vengeful reasons.”

“I can understand that; the system didn’t treat them well.”

He cited a three-decade process that started with Reaganomics and its tax cuts, which he says favored the rich by increasing their wealth and political clout. In tax year 1985, for example, he said the top 1 percent gained a $350,000 windfall while the typical household received $3,500, and the poor received a couple of hundred dollars (all in today’s dollars).

Reaganomics also hurt the middle class by crushing unions, he says.

Komlos blamed Democrats, too. Financial deregulation and hyper-globalization under President Clinton accelerated the process of hurting the middle class, according to the economist.

“George Bush Jr. continued to pamper the superrich with his tax policies,” Komlos says. “The process culminated with Barack Obama’s bailing out the super-rich and his disregard of Main Street. This is fermentation for people in despair.”

Komlos said the United States blew an opportunity to drastically restructure its economy and make it fairer when the bottom fell out in 2008-2009.

“The rich and powerful were on their knees, they were bankrupt,” he said. “That’s the only time when you could have really put the economy on a bigger path.”

He added that the taxpayer bailout “was the biggest transfer of wealth from bottom to the top in history of mankind.”

And Komlos said Obama’s choice of Timothy Geithner, a former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, to be his first secretary of the treasury was the “worst decision Obama made in his life.”

“(Geithner) didn’t care about Main Street, he cared about banking,” Komlos said. “Obama is not blameless by any means.”

He noted that Citibank and Bank of America had a combined market value of $24 billion in March 2009. Today they are worth $400 billion.

“The taxpayer didn’t get a cent of the capital gains,” Komlos said.

“We’re in bad shape folks, we’re in much worse shape than we think … because all these problems are not even recognized.”

He added: “Do not blame Hillary’s ‘basket of deplorables’ for heaven’s sake. They are the victims. They did not create the system and they do not understand the system and they are being manipulated in a big way.

“My argument is it’s the economic policies that led to the deplorables, and vengeance on us.”

Rest can be found here

“I want to retire as quickly as possible. Financial freedom will give me the flexibility to do that,” says Schill, 38, who had her salary restored after ten weeks. By that point, she found a new daycare for her children that was 20% cheaper. That put more money back into her pocket to invest, a plus since stocks were at bargain prices, she says.

“I’m going to keep plowing toward my retirement goals,” says Schill. “You can’t time the market. You have to remove the emotion regardless of the wild ride.”

After stocks sold off in the spring, some Americans, like Schill, are happy with their retirement balances again following the market rebound.

On Tuesday, the S&P 500 rose 0.2% to 3,389.78, eclipsing its previous Feb. 19 high to finish at the highest closing level on record. That means this year’s bear market, or a drop of more than 20% from a peak, from the February high to the lows on March 23 was the shortest in history, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.

While retirement accounts saw sharp swings in the second quarter due to the uncertainty surrounding the outbreak, investors boosted their IRA contributions, driving record-breaking flows to retail retirement accounts while contributions to 401(k) plans remained steady, according to Fidelity Investments.

Bouncing back: Retirement savers cash in after shrugging off stock market woes in the spring

'Insulin or groceries': How reduced unemployment affects struggling Americans from California to Mississippi

So why is the stock market at records while the U.S. economy is in one of the sharpest economic downturns since the Great Depression? Here’s what the experts say:

Why a record in a recession?

Although stocks are back at highs, millions of out-of-work Americans are still suffering after a mind-boggling 56.2 million Americans sought unemployment aid in just 21 weeks.

But there have been signs of improvement in the labor market recently, which has helped rejuvenate investor optimism for the recovery.

“It’s not so much about good versus bad news. The market cares about whether things are getting better versus worse,” says Ryan Detrick, senior market strategist at LPL Financial. “The economy is still nowhere near its output prior to the pandemic. But things are getting better.”

---Former president Barack Obama will deliver his Democratic convention speech tonight from the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, a location intended to underscore “our very democracy is at stake” in this election, CNN reports.

Excerpt from Obama’s Speech
“I never expected that my successor would embrace my vision or continue my policies. I did hope, for the sake of our country, that Donald Trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously; that he might come to feel the weight of the office and discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care. But he never did.”

Former Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA) crossed party lines and endorsed Joe Biden for president.
--Said Dent in a piece written for CNN:
“Biden is fundamentally a decent and honorable man who
respects the American tradition,
supports the rule of law,
embraces America’s friends and allies,
and will restore some semblance of normalcy to the functioning of government.
That’s all I want — and not too much to ask of a President.
Biden will perform these duties respectfully and with dignity.”

Facebook Removes 790 QAnon Groups
“Facebook said on Wednesday that it had removed 790 QAnon groups from its site and was restricting another 1,950 groups, 440 pages and more than 10,000 Instagram accounts related to the right-wing conspiracy theory, in the social network’s most sweeping action against the fast-growing movement,” the New York Times reports.
“Facebook’s takedown followed record growth of QAnon groups on the site, much of it since the coronavirus pandemic began in March.”
