In her first speech since Joe Biden selected her as his running mate, Senator Kamala Harris told multiple lies. To wit:

False. The pandemic and its associated lockdowns, not the president, are responsible for the economic contraction. Donald Trump is not the president of the euro zone, which suffered through an even more dire economic contraction in the second quarter: minus 40.3 percent, on an annualized basis, as against minus 32.9 percent in the US. The U.K. suffered a contraction of 59.8 percent, also on an annualized basis. Donald Trump is not the prime minister of the United Kingdom. The U.S. economy did slightly better than Germany’s in the second quarter. And it’s questionable to compare the current crisis to the Great Depression, which was not only deep but lasted more than a decade. The U.S. added 1.8 million jobs in July and Goldman Sachs predicts 25 percent (annualized) GDP growth in the current third quarter, which would mark an end to the U.S. recession after two quarters.
“Just look where [Trump and Mike Pence] have gotten us. . . . Millions of kids who cannot go back to school,” Harris said.
Wrong. It is not Donald Trump’s decision whether kids go back to school, because the federal government does not run schools, but he has urged the schools to reopen. The primary reason kids cannot go back to school is opposition from teachers’ unions. The second-largest teachers’ union is threatening to strike if schools reopen.
“Six years ago, in fact, we had a different health crisis,” Harris said. “It was called Ebola. We all remember that pandemic.”
Incorrect. Ebola was an outbreak, not a pandemic, according to the World Health Organization.
“This virus has impacted almost every country,” Harris said. “But there’s a reason it has hit America worse than any other advanced nation. It’s because of Trump’s failure to take it seriously.”
Wrong. Several advanced nations have suffered more fatalities per million population than the U.S.: Belgium, the U.K., Spain, Italy, Sweden. Donald Trump is not in charge of any of these countries.
In order to appeal to disaffected black voters who might lean toward protest voting (Kanye) or not voting (2016), Democrats ingeniously picked the one black candidate whose parents are not from America, whose ancestors had slaves, and who spent her career locking up black men.
I’m happy to report that Paul Howard, Fulton County, Georgia’s district attorney, has gone down to crushing defeat in his primary race. Howard, who has been the DA for more than two decades, lost his runoff race with Fani Willis by more than 45 points.
Readers will recall that Howard charged Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe with felony murder in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. Brooks had fired a taser gun at Rolfe. Howard had recently declared a taser to be a deadly weapon under Georgia State law.
Charging Rolfe with murder is indefensible. It’s doubtful whether Rolfe even committed a crime. And Howard didn’t wait for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to complete its investigation.
The overcharging of Rolfe appeared to be an attempt by Howard to salvage victory in his primary race. Polling showed Howard to be well behind Willis, who ran ahead of him in the first round. Howard was laboring under charges of sexual harassment and corruption.
Now, Howard can fully devote himself to defending against these charges, plus an investigation into the way grand jury subpoenas were issued by his office in the Rayshard Brooks case.
Willis will become the new DA. Apparently, she faces no Republican opposition.

Journalists have long jumped back and forth between Democratic Party politics and media gigs. The job is the same. The venue is different.
I bring this up because, as my former colleague Sean Davis points out, Nick Pacilio, Kamala Harris’s former press secretary, is now in charge of deciding announcing what the president of the United States can and can’t say on Twitter to his 85 million followers. Twitter has already removed debatable contentions by the president — or, contentions no more misleading than any number of Joe Biden allegations. The point of removing tweets, I assume, has more to do with being able to call Trump a liar than worrying about his spreading misleading information.
But the optics are remarkably terrible for Twitter. It’s almost certainly true that whoever holds the job of senior communication manager at the social-media giant will be ideologically progressive like the company’s CEO. But could you imagine what the nightly reaction on CNN and MSNBC would be if Mike Pence’s former spokesperson was seen censoring Joe Biden’s tweets during a presidential election? Said Trump: “She was so angry, such hatred with Justice Kavanaugh. I’ve never seen anything like it. She was the angriest of the group, and they were all angry.”
He then went after Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who he called “not even a smart person” who “goes out and yaps,” seemingly upset that a politician has the nerve to deliver public speeches.

Biden’s pick of Kamala Harris was expected. What happened next, however, was not. And it spells trouble for the incumbent.

No one was shocked by Joe Biden’s pick of California Senator Kamala Harris. For months people had guessed and assumed she would be Biden’s veep. The other names on the list didn’t seem to make much sense. Many of the women on that list lacked the kind of visibility and excitement that Kamala innately possessed, not to mention Kamala’s digital army and heaps of charisma. But Kamala had been impressive, commanding, and serious in the debates. Some sexist pundits worried that she had been too commanding and impressive.
So that was all expected. What happened next, though, was something that few of us saw coming. Even I, who am completely dead inside, was all of a sudden incredibly moved by the idea of Kamala Harris as vice president. And I was not alone. The sentiment and the excitement, the pride that women around the country felt, almost no one, perhaps not even Harris, could have predicted.
And while Instagram was a sea of Kamala photos and non-Fox cable news was an ocean of gushing pundits, some of whom had at one point been skeptical of the senator from California, it became really clear who were the biggest losers of the Kamala Harris veep pick: Donald J. Trump, and especially the boring mediocre white guy he calls his Veep, Mike Pence.
Lara Bazelon, a professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law who wrote a scathing New York Times opinion piece last year titled “Kamala Harris Was Not a Progressive Prosecutor,” also joined “Skullduggery” to discuss Harris’s selection. Bazelon said she wrote the piece because Harris called herself a “progressive prosecutor” when she started campaigning for president.
“I knew that that was completely inaccurate,” Bazelon said. “She opposed the legalization of marijuana; she opposed bail reform; she opposed DNA testing for a death row prisoner who many people believe is innocent named Kevin Cooper; she fought to uphold wrongful convictions.”
Bazelon said Harris has reversed her positions since becoming a senator, suddenly taking “classically progressive” stances.
“I think it was because progressives called her out during the presidential run and because she understood the zeitgeist was moving on criminal justice quite far to the left and she had to go there,” Bazelon said. “Even though 2015 seems like yesterday from the perspective of progressive prosecution, it’s about 100 years ago. ... It’s a different era.”

I’m happy to report that Paul Howard, Fulton County, Georgia’s district attorney, has gone down to crushing defeat in his primary race. Howard, who has been the DA for more than two decades, lost his runoff race with Fani Willis by more than 45 points.
Readers will recall that Howard charged Atlanta police officer Garrett Rolfe with felony murder in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. Brooks had fired a taser gun at Rolfe. Howard had recently declared a taser to be a deadly weapon under Georgia State law.
Charging Rolfe with murder is indefensible. It’s doubtful whether Rolfe even committed a crime. And Howard didn’t wait for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to complete its investigation.
The overcharging of Rolfe appeared to be an attempt by Howard to salvage victory in his primary race. Polling showed Howard to be well behind Willis, who ran ahead of him in the first round. Howard was laboring under charges of sexual harassment and corruption.
Now, Howard can fully devote himself to defending against these charges, plus an investigation into the way grand jury subpoenas were issued by his office in the Rayshard Brooks case.
Willis will become the new DA. Apparently, she faces no Republican opposition.

When CNN hired Sarah Isgur, a former Jeff Sessions spokeswoman and now staff writer at The Dispatch, last year to be a political editor at its Washington bureau, left-wing media types put on a full-court press to smear her professionalism. The CNN newsroom — which, last I looked, included former Obama official Jim Sciutto — was reportedly “demoralized” by her very presence. Conservatives, and it’s probably fair to say that Isgur is a pretty moderate one, aren’t welcome in mainstream journalism. We don’t need to go through all the numbers and polls to stress this point. Journalists have long jumped back and forth between Democratic Party politics and media gigs. The job is the same. The venue is different.
I bring this up because, as my former colleague Sean Davis points out, Nick Pacilio, Kamala Harris’s former press secretary, is now in charge of deciding announcing what the president of the United States can and can’t say on Twitter to his 85 million followers. Twitter has already removed debatable contentions by the president — or, contentions no more misleading than any number of Joe Biden allegations. The point of removing tweets, I assume, has more to do with being able to call Trump a liar than worrying about his spreading misleading information.
But the optics are remarkably terrible for Twitter. It’s almost certainly true that whoever holds the job of senior communication manager at the social-media giant will be ideologically progressive like the company’s CEO. But could you imagine what the nightly reaction on CNN and MSNBC would be if Mike Pence’s former spokesperson was seen censoring Joe Biden’s tweets during a presidential election? I have no doubt Democrats would be calling for congressional hearings.

No one was shocked by Joe Biden’s pick of California Senator Kamala Harris. For months people had guessed and assumed she would be Biden’s veep. The other names on the list didn’t seem to make much sense. Many of the women on that list lacked the kind of visibility and excitement that Kamala innately possessed, not to mention Kamala’s digital army and heaps of charisma. But Kamala had been impressive, commanding, and serious in the debates. Some sexist pundits worried that she had been too commanding and impressive.
So that was all expected.
What happened next, though, was something that few of us saw coming. Even I, who am completely dead inside, was all of a sudden incredibly moved by the idea of Kamala Harris as vice president. And I was not alone. The sentiment and the excitement, the pride that women around the country felt, almost no one, perhaps not even Harris, could have predicted.
And while Instagram was a sea of Kamala photos and non-Fox cable news was an ocean of gushing pundits, some of whom had at one point been skeptical of the senator from California,
