Only 1.8 million jobs added?

US employers hire 1.8M despite new COVID-19 shutdowns - Unemployment 10.2%
Economists surveyed by Refinitiv expected the report to show that unemployment dropped to 10.5% and the economy added 1.6 million jobs.

“We have seen a very troubling increase in COVID-19 cases in many states that had reopened for business, but we continue to be cautiously optimistic that the overall U.S. economy has turned a corner, and that the solid job gains announced today will be sustained," said Tony Bedikian, managing director of Citizens Bank.

Same old same old, huh? There was much buzz that this was going to be a disappointing Jobs report, but it turned out to be "unexpectedly" good again. Not as good as June, but damned good numbers non-the-less.

There seems to be a very tepid reaction by many regarding this turnaround. I think plenty of people were expecting that the new wave of Covid cases would be causing a much greater amount of problems than it has. I think people generally are over Covid and are ready to go about their collective businesses (with or without the risks involved).

Certain math challenged posters here keep talking about 55 million people here without jobs..

Well if the unemployment rate is roughly 10 percent and very roughly 180 million Americans are in the work place what is a good guestimate of the actual number ???

Numbers are from the top of my head...

Florida Health Directors ORDERED to Keep Quiet
August 7, 2020 at 10:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

As Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) “pushed this summer for schools to reopen, state leaders told school boards they would need Health Department approval if they wanted to keep classrooms closed,” the Palm Beach Post reports.

“Then they instructed health directors not to give it.”

“Following a directive from DeSantis’ administration, county health directors across Florida refused to give school boards advice about one of the most wrenching public health decisions in modern history: whether to reopen schools in a worsening pandemic.”

Said school Lake County School Board Marc Dodd: “When we voted to reopen schools, I’ll be honest and tell you I did it because we are under an executive order to do so. Do I think they’re safe? ABSOLUTELY NOT.”

Trump Fails to Stall Rape Accuser’s Lawsuit
August 7, 2020 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“President Trump can’t stall a defamation lawsuit filed by a New York advice columnist who claims he raped her two decades ago, a judge ruled, allowing the two sides to start digging for evidence,” Bloomberg reports.

“E. Jean Carroll, who went public with her claims last year and sued Trump after he called her a liar, will now seek to depose the president as well as get a DNA test from him to compare with a sample on a dress the author said she wore at the time of the alleged attack.”

just checked the numbers, right before pandemic we had a workforce of 165 million.

Unemployment rate is 10.2%

16.8 million people out of work. That's a lot but way off the 35 million roger now says. Though that's an improvement from the 54 million he said earlier.

The US economy added another 1.8 million jobs in July, a sharp slowdown from June and a small step for an economy that's still down 12.9 million jobs during the pandemic.

It was the third-straight month of improvement after the spring lockdown that decimated the labor market, and the July job gain exceeded economists' expectations. Even so, it was far fewer than the 4.8 million jobs added in June.

The unemployment rate fell to 10.2%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, but remains above the Great Recession high of 10% that was reached in October 2009 just before the Obama administration announced that bailout money, that saved the automobile industry.

The Republicans went crazy about the deficit, that has now reached a record number!

Systemic racism still exists.

Miya Anderson grew up watching cop shows on TV, wanting to be one. But it wasn’t until after her 18-year-old brother was gunned down in 2009 that she knew it was her calling.

“I had some really good police officers that helped me and my family out during that time. And I wanted to be that person that, you know, help people,” Anderson said.

She was 13 at the time.

Nearly a decade later, Anderson pursued her dream and applied to be a Philadelphia police officer. But twice she was denied for reasons she and others say are arbitrary and racist-- a car crash she was not involved in, and having several odd jobs.

“It’s very unfair. And the only reason behind it is because I’m Black, honestly, to be totally honest. That’s just what it is,” Anderson, now 25, said.

It’s a sentiment shared by many rejected applicants who are Black and Hispanic. And the data shows that minority applicants are overwhelmingly denied entry into the academy more than their white counterparts.

0% Philadelphia police cadets in the most recent academy class who are Black
According to Philadelphia police statistics, nearly 70% of applicants who show up to orientation to take the reading and agility tests are Black, Hispanic, Asian or other. And 31% of applicants are white.

Yet, in the last year, 71% of recruits who make it into the police academy are white. Only 29% were people of color.

January’s recruit class had no Black recruits.

Biden Campaign Cancels Trip Upstairs

WILMINGTON, DE—Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Biden campaign has canceled the presidential candidate's much-anticipated trip upstairs due to health concerns.

Biden had planned to go upstairs, get a bite to eat from the refrigerator, and return to the basement, but due to coronavirus fears, will be remaining down there indefinitely.

"Sorry, Joe -- that trip upstairs is getting postponed," an aide told a crestfallen Biden after he had gotten all dressed up for the first time in weeks, excited to see the sunshine and get some fresh air. "Maybe sometime in the fall we can go. I know we promised you. Now, Joe, don't give me that look. You know that won't help."

"This is malarkey, that's what it is," Biden grumbled as the aide locked the basement door behind him. "What kind of country is this where you can't go grab some snacks from the fridge whenever you want? This whole hugger-mugger pandemic is just a real big brouhaha, that's what I think, anyway."

Biden was placated somewhat when someone found a stack of old Columbo DVDs to help him whittle away the hours.

Trump’s disengagement from the nitty-gritty of governing is not new. Nor is his penchant for contradicting his own administration on matters large and small.

But after nearly four years of daily presidential mistruths, polls show a strong majority of Americans don’t trust what Trump says about the pandemic, or his bizarre claims of success in fighting it — a distinct liability as he faces reelection with more than 160,000 Americans dead from COVID-19 and a 10.2% unemployment rate.

Now as he enters the twilight of his first term with dimming prospects for a second, the president is finding that Republicans are notably less willing to indulge his inclinations, ideas and persistent magical thinking amid a seemingly never-ending national crisis.

Election Day is the next milestone for Trump. Unless the Russians attack our election systems and alter vote totals, poisoning the result and grinding the country to a halt, the president will lose bigly. We rightly assume Russia will do this—and don’t get me wrong; we should take this very very VERY seriously—but it’s no sure thing. Consider: Joe Biden is already pissed at Putin for dragging his son Hunter into the public eye; it’s now his personal mission to destroy him. If Russia attempts any more election fuckery, that will only give Joe even more incentive to go hard at that little KGB twerp, which means confiscating the hundreds of billions of dollars Putin and his cronies have parked in Western banks. Putin’s hold on power in Russia is tenuous right now; there have been massive protests in some of the eastern oblasts. Can he afford to risk all that cheddar for four more years of Trump? Furthermore, even if Russia does do its thing, cheating only works if the vote totals are close—and this is going to be a blowout. Think Reagan-Mondale, Nixon-McGovern, Cowboys-Bills.

Trump will huff and puff and cry foul, but if he goes down, nothing he says or does will change the result. His cultists will be angry, but—newsflash—they’re angry already. (And really, after four years of MAGA, they can go fuck themselves.) Meanwhile, for the rest of us, the catharsis of a Biden victory will be off the charts. There will be joyful shouting, hollering, and weeping. There will be dancing in the streets. There will be sex. There will be nights of restorative, Ambien-free sleep.

But even after he loses the election, Trump will remain in the Oval Office until noon on January 20. He has the New York indictments looming, and the rape case the press never talks about, and god knows what all when Biden takes over and appoints an AG who isn’t a foreign spy and mob toady. That gives him two full months to concoct an escape plan to avoid a post-presidency of litigation, prosecution, asset forfeiture, and prison.

There are three ways to elude that fate:

First, Trump could resign and have Pence pardon him—the Nixon template. That won’t work, because, first, Pence is a co-conspirator, and second, some of the crimes are state crimes, and a presidential pardon doesn’t work with state crimes. Also, if you’re Pence…why would you even do that? Mother will allow him to pardon Trump for rape?

Second, Trump could drop dead. The novel coronavirus seems not to bother him, but he’s in his seventies, morbidly obese, and in poor health due to shitty diet and rampant drug use—plus the stress must be brutal, even for a narcissistic sociopath. He is pretty obviously unwell. Would anyone be surprised if he stroked out? (If there is an afterlife, of course, he will be delivered to Hell instantaneously, where his infernal torment—maybe a vegan yoga retreat and sweat lodge that goes on for all eternity?—will be worse than prison, but let us confine ourselves in this space to temporal matters).

Third, he could flee. That would look like this: In December, he makes one last state visit to Saudi Arabia. He brings his namesake son, his charity-cheating son, his feckless daughter, and her criminal husband. Once in the Kingdom, he formally resigns, gets political amnesty, and the Trump family lives out their lives as guests of Jared’s BFF, Mohammad Bone-Saw. (Or maybe he’d go to the UAE, where Betsy DeVos’s brother now lives. Crown Prince or Eric Prince, pick your poison.)

That’s what a smart man would do—but Trump is not smart, as the Axios interview conclusively shows. Because he’s never faced any real consequences for his lifetime of crimes, Trump will likely assume that this will also be the case going forward. Odds are, he will ride it out and hope for the best, giving We The People the opportunity to indict him, try him, convict him, and lock him up—and in so doing, make America great again.

Kput'z shut the fuck

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that New York schools will be able to open for in-person instruction this fall, leaving the ultimate decision on reopening up to local authorities.

Cuomo said the infection rates due to COVID-19 are low enough so the districts can begin to reopen next month. Friday's decision is meant to be a preliminary one, as the first day of school is still a month away. Each district had to submit their own plans to reopen that are being reviewed by the state Health Department.

The nation's largest school district, New York City, is expected to start classes Sept. 10. The district plans to allow students to choose either online learning or a hybrid plan with as many as three days of in-person instruction.
