Why slow Joe will win 2020

There is a longstanding old fashioned Presidential theory that pretty much says you can throw everything else out and determine the winner or every Presidential election based on a single criteria.

Who would you rather have as a neighbor?

Who would you prefer to give a spare key to. Who would you prefer to lend to and borrow power tools from. Who would  you prefer to invite to your barbecue. Or most obvious of them all... who would you prefer to just drink a beer with.

Going back in time the first Presidential election I really remember was Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. There was really little political appeal about a peanut farmer turned southern Governor, but everyone thought he a was a good guy. Honest Christian. The sort of guy you could trust living next door and if you thought he actually drank beer, well he's that sort of guy. Ford was okay, but seemed a bit stiff and stuffy for most.

The next election of course brought forward Ronald Reagan, who looked like an actor playing a nice guy on television (likely because he was an actor). He was a combination of Ward Cleaver, Andy Griffin, and Jim Anderson. He was the neighbor you wanted. Probably had a nice polite family too, and had an older son who would come over and volunteer to mow your lawn for free because he was just that sort of kid.

After that we had a less likable George Bush Sr... but he was more likable than Michael Dukakis. He was the neighbor who was a stand up guy, but probably got upset if your kids played on his neatly manicured lawn. But he was going to be a trusted guy in the neighborhood, even if he wasn't going to be your best friend.

Then came Bill Clinton. Who didn't want to have a beer or case with old Bill. Probably complain and laugh about Hillary being a prude in bed and take you to the strip club and buy you table dances. You may or may not trust him with your house key, but you invited him to everything.

After that came the younger George Bush. This Bush had less stuffiness and was more down home than his dad. He came across as the guy who probably owned every power tool known to mankind and half of them were sitting in other neighbors garages because he was constantly loaning them out. He was a grill master who invited you over for beer and brats at least twice a month.

Then we hit Barack Obama. Certainly the Obamas looked like a 2000's version of a black leave it to Beaver or Father knows best cast. While he ran against people who might have otherwise qualified as being the beer guzzling key sharing all star neighbors, there was something to be said about trusting your key and sending out invites to a black family (as racist as that might sound today).

Then we hit a snag in 2016 with a couple of people that almost nobody probably wanted as their neighbor. The lesser of two evils so to speak. But at the end of the day, going to a strip bar with Bill now sounded a little creepy, and the fact that Bill complained about Hillary was different when she was the one you were considering. Donald and Melania may not seem like the warmest couple on the planet, but at least you didn't have to worry about a neighborhood feud where enemies of the Trumps ended up committing suicide in suspicious manners.

So here we are in 2020. We still don't care much about living next to the Trumps. We may or may not want to share your house key with them. The same problems exist. But his opponent is no longer the horribly damaged Hillary Clinton. It's slow Joe Biden. Biden may be sort of dumb, he might forget your name, not to mention where he last saw your power tool he borrowed. But you are okay with inviting him over for a beer and barbecue.

So by the who do you want as a neighbor standard... this election (like it or not) goes to Dementia Joe and Jill Biden.
