I will give you an example: Issac Newton's mechanical static universe was a theory that was accepted 350 years. If was even believed with unquestioned faith by people who though it was the work of God.
However in the late 19th century the theory started to break down as the studies of electromagnet radiation reveled phenomena that contradicted the predictions in Newton's theory.
