The Post Office’s Problem Isn’t Trump
Democrats cry sabotage. But mail volume is way down, and the USPS is losing billions of dollars.

Two months into his new job, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is being keelhauled by Democrats for alleged sabotage of the U.S. Postal Service. Nearly 200 House Democrats signed a letter this week accusing him of acting to “accelerate the crisis” at the USPS. Apparently they missed the post office’s news release last Friday, when it reported losing another $2.2 billion last quarter. Congress has only itself to blame for this mess.

 

That red ink is no fluke of circumstance. The post office is meant to be self-sufficient, but it hasn’t broken even for years. Total losses since 2007 run to $78 billion, according to a May report by the Government Accountability Office, which said that the “USPS’s current business model is not financially sustainable.” It’s a Blockbuster service in a Netflix world.

Overall mail volume peaked in 2006, at 213 billion pieces. As of last year, it was down 33%. More than half of what remains is “marketing mail.” Maybe you noticed while searching for a birthday card amid the real-estate fliers. Over the same period, however, the number of delivery points served by the USPS increased by 9%, from 146 million to 160 million.

There are more addresses than ever, but less mail than at any time since 1985. It’s similar on the retail side: Customer visits fell from 1.06 billion in 2010 to 812 million last year, down 23%. Yet total retail offices dropped 4%, to 34,613. The USPS’s package-delivery business is growing, but it can’t make up the difference.

This is one of those deals where the President of the United States has absolutely zero to do with the budget of the USPS or what sort of cuts are being required in order for this US department to remain solvent. It doesn't take a genius to figure out if you are requiring more mail drops to deliver less mail, that this means more work while being provided less money.

There isn't a business in the world that would simply continue to expand their work load while their revenue goes down. Dominoes doesn't open more stores or hire more delivery drivers if there are less pizzas to deliver. Sears won't open more stores or hire more employees if nobody is coming into their stores to buy their products...

Likewise, the postal service should not be expanding their delivery routes even as they are seeing large decreases in the amount of mail they are delivering. Believe it or not, the USPS does not exist to assist with the concept that Democrats want to have the entire country vote by mail.

Ask yourself some questions. When was the last time you mailed a letter? Do you still pay your bills by mail? Do you send Christmas cards anymore or do it electronically?  What do you actually do to keep the USPS afloat?

But apparently a USPS that is used to delivering pretty much advertisements, political propaganda, and credit card offers, is suddenly going to have no issues when 100 million Americans all decide one day to start using their services... but just for a couple of weeks. The fact that just the mail in voting in a variety of primary situations ended in fiasco should not come as a shock to anyone... yet it does.

Not only does this apparently shock liberals (who seemingly have no business sense what-so-ever), but they are so completely confused by it, that they generally feel that it must be some sort of conspiracy. Obviously no conspiracy can exist unless the "bad orange man" is involved, right?
