My father was employed with the FBI in DC and as a newly married man with a son, he would never have been drafted for WWII when it began.
He volunteered to go. He was credited with piloting 51 B-17 missions over Germany and other parts of Europe. When he and his crew reached a target area, the sky was often black with flack.
He volunteered for some missions that were especially dangerous, because he had only cloud cover at the target with no accompanying Tuskegee airmen for protection.
If he had been shot down and either captured or killed, as many of our bomber crews were, he would have been a hero.
NOT a "loser" or a "sucker" for volunteering to go.
