This is a preliminary look at the latest polls and how the demographics break down if you look at how the partisanship is breaking down. There was a little bit more to the 2016 spreadsheet, but at the end of the day this was the basic starting point. Ignore the top lines and use the demographic breakdowns from the cross tabs and then use a traditional weighting scheme based on the past few elections. As you can see if you weigh their samples by a traditional or an expected demographic breakdown, those large polling leads start to implode just a bit. Sorry, but there will be no election where only 26% of the electorate are Republicans.
The numbers right now look pretty consistent with 2016 when it comes to Democrats and Republicans, but not so much with Independents. Biden is getting roughly 89% of Democrats and Trump is getting 87% of Republicans. Clinton got 89% and Trump got 88% of their Party vote in 2016. Biden is getting the same 8% of Republicans that Hillary got, while Trump is getting a slightly smaller number of Democrats (6% vs 8% ) than he did in 2016. The Independents are currently running about
I do recall, however, that Trump made inroads down the stretch with the independent vote even as most of the media pollsters remained pretty stubborn in showing Clinton polling ahead in independents. The larger amounts of independent pollster, especially the tracking polls were more favorable for Trump (and more accurate) when it came to Independents. That is where that movement came from and drifted the final number to the more accurate result.
I had a lot more pollsters in 2016 to work with. I will continue to search for more and hopefully more (especially the tracking polls) might become available in the next few weeks. But for now, it appears that Biden holds a lead between four and five points, which may or may not be enough for him to be comfortable right now. This is about two points more favorable to Trump than the current RCP averages and about three points more favorable to Trump than what you will see from 538.
The difference between right now and 2016 is that in 2016 my spreadsheet only moved marginally the last couple of weeks towards Trump, whereas RCP and 538 moved much more dramatically down the stretch. We'll see if 2020 is more of the same or something different.

Yes it is Roger... but it was the previous survey that had Biden up by two points. I am only using pollsters that will be updating their numbers at least once a week. They will constantly change.
RCP Average 9/3 - 9/15 49.2

I just posted the RCP poll average Biden +6.2% which is higher than the General election in September of 2016.
Digging deeper you can see that the educated suburban women who voted for Trump are not going to vote for him again
Looks like Nursing Home Rog completely missed the ENTIRE POINT of the spreadsheet and the post.
About par for the course.
My post had the latest results 6.2%
I know how to use spreadsheets and you manipulated the numbers to fit your beliefs
Your spreadsheet shows a 4.2% advantage for Biden. You said that you excluded Rasmussen, so you lied!
I thought that you don't approve personal attacks, but you just did it now!
Scott you said
In 2016 I was within a couple of tenths of a percent of the final number with a modified version of this same spreadsheet. (note: this does not include the recent updates to Rasmussen which would reduce Biden's lead to 4.2%)
The spreadsheet includes Rasmussen and shows the results is 4.2%
I caught your lie!
Scott Yes it is Roger

Yep. Both are true.
But for now, it appears that Biden holds a lead between four and five points
The latest poll shows 6.2%
Looks like Nursing Home Rog completely missed the ENTIRE POINT of the spreadsheet and the post.

like i've been saying for a while now...
there's stupid, and then there's "alky stupid."
Roger , is it true you live in a rental?
The whore lie about Biden is still alive!
In 2016 I was within a couple of tenths of a percent of the final number with a modified version of this same spreadsheet. (note: this does not include the recent updates to Rasmussen which would reduce Biden's lead to 4.2%)
The spreadsheet includes Rasmussen and shows the results is 4.2%
Did I say it did not include Rasmussen?
Nope...
I stated that if did not include "recent updates to rasmussen".
Look at the date of the Rassmussen poll on my spreadsheet. It's 9/8 - that was last weeks poll.
Do you understand yet?
It's pretty simple.
When I wrote this post (it was scheduled) - Rasmussen had not yet released their 9/15 poll. So my spreadsheet has the 9/8 poll on it, which had Biden ahead (on the topline) by 2. The 9/15 poll was an improvement for Trump (mainly in Independents where he is now leading). But overall he went from -2 to +1.
So Roger...
When I replace the 9/8 Rasmussen poll with the 9/15 poll... the averages regarding independents move in Trump's favor as does the overall number.
But that wasn't IN the spreadsheet I posted. Which is why I made the note.
I can only assume that you are the only one not bright enough to figure this out... or "ARE" you bright enough with your genius IQ and everything?
During last night’s ABC town hall, when asked whether he could have done more to stop the coronavirus pandemic, Trump responded: “I don't think so.”
It's on tape. Trump knowingly downplayed the dangers of the virus, and nearly 200,000 Americans have died. We must vote him out.
Moreover...
I am totally aware that RCP has a different average- because they are just averaging the top line results (reported by the pollsters themselves).
It provides nobody with anything of substance if I just repost the same damned thing here. There would be no point in it.
As explained (in the post) I am only using the crosstabs from these pollsters to garner an average of these demographics. If these pollsters are correct, then the Dem/Rep/Ind breakdown will also be correct....
My top line is simply to use those cross tabs with a partisan breakdown that is consistent with the past few elections (and specifically 2016 - since it is the last Presidential election).
So certainly my spreadsheet could turn out wrong if there is some huge surge in Democratic or Republican turn out that upsets the conventional apple cart.
But this completely eliminates the situation where a pollster takes a poll and uses a sample where 41% of the respondands are Democrats and 26% are Republicans. That makes NO SENSE and should not ever be used as a top line result.
The recent. Fine. But it still looks like posted your it to make it look better for the President.
RCP and fivethirtyeight differ with you.

A new survey from Gallup shows that 50 percent of U.S. adults identify as Democrat or leaning Democrat as of June compared to just 39 percent identifying as Republican or leaning Republican. That’s an enormous shift from the beginning of the year, when the same survey showed 47 percent of U.S. adults identifying as Republican and 45 percent identifying as Democrat.
https://www.statista.com/chart/22302/party-affiliation-in-2020/
The party affiliations have shown the Republican percentage is at record low levels.
Most of the polls are fairly accurate.
50 vs 39 doesn't effect the results of the polling.

*Toss-ups: North Carolina, Maine, Iowa, Georgia, Montana
*Could flip under the right conditions: Georgia, Michigan, South Carolina, Texas, Kansas, Kentucky, Alaska

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.) — Coronavirus infections in the Dakotas are growing faster than anywhere else in the nation, fueling impassioned debates over masks and personal freedom after months in which the two states avoided the worst of the pandemic.
The argument over masks raged this week in Brookings, South Dakota, as the city council considered requiring face coverings in businesses. The city was forced to move its meeting to a local arena to accommodate intense interest, with many citizens speaking against it, before the mask requirement ultimately passed.
Amid the brute force of the pandemic, health experts warn that the infections must be contained before care systems are overwhelmed. North Dakota and South Dakota lead the country in new cases per capita over the last two weeks, ranking first and second respectively, according to Johns Hopkins University researchers.
South Dakota has also posted some of the country’s highest positivity rates for COVID-19 tests in the last week — over 17 percent — an indication that there are more infections than tests are catching.

So the polls your don't accept as accurate don't use a different percentage that alters the results.
Wow... it's like explaining things to a toddler.
No Roger... I use every poll in the group (which is like every pollster that put out cross tabs in the past week or so).
I don't pick and choose pollsters.
I don't change any of the numbers that they provide.
I don't "adjust" them as Nate Silver does.
I simply use the cross tabs as they are provided by the pollster.
I ignore all top lines as they are irrelevant to the spreadsheet.
When all is said and done I have a sample from nine different pollsters averaged out by how the Democrats will vote, how the Republicans will vote and how the Independents will vote.
You are free to argue all day wrong that this is the WRONG WAY to do it. But it's not done to make anyone look good or bad. It's exactly the same way I did it in 2016.
Or just look at it this way, Roger... it's an alternate manner for judgement. The more analysis and statistical calculations there are, the better. We all shouldn't just follow 538 like sheep.
Btw...
If you go back to November of 2016 I have a post (on election day before the polls closed) suggesting that the early exit polling was in line with my spreadsheet in regards to the partisan breakdown. I also suggested that Hillary was going to win by 2 points (but not necessarily win the electoral college).
This was all based on this same basic model and I suggested this before "any" votes had actually been counted. Yet, I was correct.
So my spreadsheet was more accurate than either RCP and 538 four years ago. I wouldn't bet on either RCP or 538 getting it any more right in 2020. But you never know... which is the deal, huh?
South Dakota Covid-19 data

Barr brings the pain -
Attorney General William Barr told the nation's federal prosecutors to be aggressive when charging violent demonstrators with crimes, including potentially prosecuting protesters for plotting to overthrow the U.S. government, people familiar with the conversation said.
In a conference call with U.S. attorneys across the country last week, Mr. Barr warned that sometimes violent demonstrations across the U.S. could worsen as the November presidential election approaches. He encouraged the prosecutors to seek a number federal charges, including under a rarely used sedition law, even when state charges could apply, the people said.
...
Federal prosecutors have charged more than 200 people with violent crimes related to the protests, most of whom face counts of arson, assaulting federal officers, or gun crimes...
In the call last week, Mr. Barr urged prosecutors to seek federal charges whenever possible, two of the people said. He listed a number of additional statutes they could potentially use, including one addressing conspiracies or plots to overthrow the government. Legal experts say the rarely used statute could be difficult to prove in court and potentially run up against First Amendment protections.

Scott should take time off for the same reasons!
The top spokesman for the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services is taking a leave of absence, the agency announced Wednesday, days after he promoted dangerous conspiracy theories during a Facebook Live video.
In the video, first reported by the New York Times, Michael Caputo, who is HHS' assistant secretary for public affairs, charged that scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "don't want America to get well." He also urged Trump supporters to load up on ammunition in preparation for a violent left-wing rebellion when the president wins re-election.
Caputo also said in the video he's been having health issues and that his "mental health has definitely failed."

Today my friends in Atlanta (black) saw a Facebook message from their old barber (black) imploring them all to vote for Trump. Don’t think that Trump’s message doesn’t resonate with a certain sector of black men. Also, barbers have a lot of sway in the black community.
One of the other factors in the poll, according to Rasmussen, is that they didn’t over sample Democrats as do many other polls. Their sample was 37 were Democrats, 33% Republican and 31% independent of likely voters.
In 2016 it was 36% Democrat 33% Republicans and 31% Independents
In 2018 it was 37% Democrat 33% Republicans and 30% Independents
No reason to believe that Rasmussen is getting it wrong while everyone else is getting it right.
South Dakota has about 800,000 population vs California 39.51 million
.
Do the math asshole
Per capita
New York - 1704 deaths per million (2nd)
California - 370 deaths per million (26th)
Illinois - 676 deahs per million (11th)
North Dakota - 232 deaths per million (38th)
South Dakota - 217 deaths per million (40th)
Try again Roger...
Deaths increased +83%
Apply the current rate of infections, South Dakota went up 83%
South Dakota Covid Map and Case Count https://nyti.ms/2R3luxd
Gallop
50 percent of U.S. adults identify as Democrat or leaning Democrat
as of June compared to just 39 Republicans.
It's per population not likely voters. But I question the veracity of Rasmussen of likely voters vs adults.
That can intentionally alter the results of the poll.
Jesus Roger...
Give it up. The two states combined have 50 deaths since the beginning of the month (or over two weeks). They are averaging 1.5 deaths a day.
South Dakota (where we both once lived) had 37 deaths in August. They are on pace for about 42 in September. That would be an increase of 5 deaths or it might just be an anomaly.
New York has almost zero new infections right now Scott.

Never heard of Gallop? Is that a polling firm run by former members of Gallup and the fictional creature from Lord of the Rings named Gollum?
What I can tell you Roger... is that there has never been an election where 50% of the electorate was Democrat. The highest we have EVER seen was the 2008 great recession fiasco of John McCain and the 2012 reelection of Obama. Those where 38%-32% and 38%-32%
Still not anywhere in the range of 50%.
Per capita!
Which is the same as "per million" idiot.
South Dakota
26 per 100K
Per Capita Roger....
People have died in:
New York at a rate of 7.85 that of South Dakota PER CAPITA
Illinois at a rate of 3.11 that of South Dakota PER CAPITA
California at a rate of 1.7 that of South Dakota PER CAPITA
Do you understand math....
at all?
Per capita or per million, you can use the same method to get accurate results
Use your spreadsheet to get the per Capita rate of each state
In the past four Presidential elections the average partisan breakdown:
37.25 Democrat
33.50 GOP
28.75 IND
You are going back to the first months to get your numbers.
Post the results of the last month and see what you get!
The independent number is not going to be as high as the last election.
Al Gore actually election George W Bush!
Roger... This is quite simple
New York has 19 million people and over 33 thousand dead.
That is one out of every 575 person. Dead.
or 0.0017 per capita
South Dakota has 884 thousand people and only 184 dead
That is one out of every 4804
or 0.000208 per capita
Either way... well over 7 times as many people are dead in New York per capita than in South Dakota.
This isn't high level calculus Roger.
I understand the math Scott.
In regards to the COVID-19 infection and death in South Dakota, I'm talking about the death rates since the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Not from January 1st!

193 new cases
South Dakota Covid Map and Case Count https://nyti.ms/2R3luxd
Well Roger...
Since the beginning of the month
California "your state" (through yesterday) vs South Dakota (through today)
Death per capita (September)
0.00004089
0.00002598
Still nearly twice as many Californians are dying as South Dakotans. That number will grow for California when they report numbers today (South Dakota has already reported).
Apply the same math for the last month.
How many different ways do you want me to prove you wrong Roger?
I understand why, because California is more densely populated than South Dakota. So the infection rates are going to be higher here.
But Governor Noem has refused to require mask requirement or any other methods to reduce the number of cases and deaths.
This is the problem.
He knew in January that COVID-19 was the greatest medical crisis in the last 100 years.
We have recordings that show that he knew how dangerous it was.
He lied to the people. The excuse is he didn't want to scare people.
After Pearl Harbor, FDR said that we face a threat and prepare for war!
Trump lied repeatedly and thousands of lives were lost because he refused to act out and save our country from the pandemic. He was admitted that he didn't want to slow down the economy, because it would help him win again.
That's a deregulation of duty to protect the people of the United States of America.

That is why she has an approval rating that is through the fucking roof. You have quite obviously lost your South Dakotan roots, Roger. You are full scale West Coast Liberal now. Not even a hint of mid-western left in you.
I still know actual people from South Dakota and I know a hell of a lot of people from out state Minnesota. South Dakotans could't be happier with Governor Noem, while there is a lot of unhappiness with Walz and his draconian statewide mandates... especially in the rural areas of Minnesota where they are seeing no outbreak.
People from the midwest love their personal freedom and don't want to just give it away to political elitists who think they know better. South Dakotans are certainly not going to take advice from Gavin Newsom and Californians.
South Dakota has an unemployment rate of 6% where California is sitting over 13%. That is pretty much entirely because Governor Noem did not make everyone shut down their businesses and stay inside.
