The fine line between standing up for something and just being a plain old bully...

Let's be clear here folks... the black lives matter and antifa movement is no longer just a bunch of snotty kids causing trouble. It's become a criminal enterprise, not much different from any other organized crime organization. They come, make threats, shake you down, and if you do not comply, they will set your business on fire, and maybe even break some bones.

The only difference is that they don't want your protection money, they want your blind obedience to their cause... or else.

Now some of them may have started out thinking that they were the ones wearing the white hats and some of them may still believe that they are (although the black face masks should be a dead giveaway).  But it's become clear that the rank and file is not interested in the cause as much as they are interested in the violence, the anarchy, and ultimately the power that they have been provided or perceived to have been provided.

It has become much like the occupy movement that afflicted the country a few years ago. Started out with a murky vision of something nondescript and ended up turning into something even less specific than that. Ask ten different occupy movement members what they were protesting or what they were hoping to accomplish and you got ten different answers. I would guess that you would find much of the same if you asked ten antifa members why they just burned down a building or tossed a homemade bomb at a cob. Probably anything from being bored on a Friday night, to killing a cop, to ending systemic racism, to crashing the entire American government.

But herein lies the problem. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and most everyone that travels down the paved road of good intentions ends up losing themselves. The more ends justify the means thinking you allow yourself, the less moral your intentions become. Eventually all that matters is winning or losing. Once you cross over that way of thinking, you can never be the hero, you can only be the tyrant.

Make no mistake, the means for change and real revolution is to move the masses to your way of thinking. No real lasting change has come from a minority of militants bullying the majority into submission. Only temporary oppression and some sort of dictatorship style government comes from those actions.

If your cause was just and obvious, then people would follow you without having to be threatened, cancelled, or otherwise forced at the tip of a sword. Might rarely means right. The bully may ultimately get what he wants through fear and intimidation, at least until a bigger bully comes along and puts them in their place. Then that bigger bully is the hero for a little while, until people notice he is just another bully.

The trick is to lead without intimidation and without threats or coercion. If you cannot lead people through practical appeal and logical arguments, then perhaps your cause is simply not as just as you believe it to be.

Can we really deny Trump that Nobel Peace Prize? He was already nominated for facilitating an end to hostilities between Serbia and Kosovo; now he can add the UAE/Israel peace treaty and the Bahrain/Israel peace treaty.

Meanwhile, Obama brokered a "beer summit" between a black Harvard professor and a cop.

The President is stepping over the edge of Civil War.

Armed militias have been the classic tool of authoritarian regimes in for the past century, from Hitler’s brown shirts to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

Only last month, I heard the Iraqi prime minister describe his struggle to curb Iranian-backed militias in his country that have killed peaceful protesters. In Belarus and Moscow, autocrats are using personal security forces to attack pro-democracy activists. In Hong Kong, once a rule of law bastion, police sent or trained by Beijing are helping the mainland crush protesters.

Now President Donald Trump has openly joined the pro-militia crowd.

Claiming to be the law-and-order president, Trump is stoking racial tensions rather than seeking to calm them. He is encouraging armed supporters who show up in racially troubled towns and cities with their rifles at the ready.

He cheered on a pro-Trump caravan of trucks that drove into downtown Portland, Oregon, on Saturday as “GREAT PATRIOTS,” even though video showed them hurling paintballs and pepper spray, and driving into protesters, leaving one dead from an unsolved shooting.

And on the eve of a visit to Kenosha, Wisconsin, he defended Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old rifle-toting pro-Trumper accused of killing two people; they were protesting the police pumping of seven bullets into the back of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man.

Details of the Rittenhouse shooting remain unclear but don’t impact the essential point: Armed vigilantes like this young man are being encouraged to show up and take on demonstrators. Down that road lies civil war.

Indeed, civil war was on the GOP agenda at their recent convention. Trump inspired vigilantism by billing all protesters as “left-wing mobs” and “anarchists, agitators and criminals who threaten our citizens.” All demonstrations are violent and organized by Democrats, in Trump’s fantasy version, while Joe Biden is controlled by “dark forces.”

The convention even used fake video — of supposed riots in American cities — that was actually stock footage of a protest in Spain.

No surprise, this follows on Trump’s praise for torch-wielding neo-Nazi supporters in Charlottesville, Virginia, and vast overstatement of the threat from a loose anti-fascist coalition known as antifa.

The president has praised armed vigilantes who have invaded statehouses and shown up in small cities and towns such as Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, after fake social media rumors that antifa was invading. What perfect fodder for Russian hackers to spur violence in our country!

Is Trump a Mussolini-in-waiting, or simply an amoral leader willing to use any tactic to get votes? And even if “only” the latter, how will it undermine the country?

Jason Stanley, author of “How Fascism Works: the Politics of Us and Them,” warns against underestimating Trump’s intent just because this isn’t Europe — with its history of fascist regimes. “We’ve seen an increasing attempt by Trump to mobilize militias in classic fashion,” the Yale philosophy professor told me.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

“He’s attempting a Mussolini. We’ve got militias roaming the street. He’s certainly captured one of the political parties and turned it into a cult of the leader,” Stanley said. Even though the U.S. military is neutral, warns Stanley, the president “has made himself a spokesman for the police, has large number of ICE agents behind him.”

Harvard’sDaniel Ziblatt, author of “How Democracies Die,” believes Trump’s strategy is “not as coherent as it might seem. He’s improvising.

“What certainly is worrying is that he is activating certain elements of his wilder base to take law into their own hands. That can easily get out of control.”

Ziblatt adds that this encouragement of militias is “terribly destructive to democratic norms. A second term would be incredibly dangerous. If he can win an election for this, then the norms are gone.”

Of course, the prospect for militia interference during voting, or if Trump loses the election, is also extremely scary.

This is why it is so important for the Democratic Party to undercut Trump’s promotion of civil war by making clear that Trump is the main force fueling violence.

So Biden’s message this week to those who seek racial justice should be repeated over and over by the candidate: “Rioting is not protesting. Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting. It’s lawlessness, plain and simple. And those who do it should be prosecuted.”

A retired judge appointed to review the Justice Department’s motion to drop charges against former national security adviser Michael Flynn said on Friday that calling the agency’s actions “irregular,” which he did in June, “would be a study in understatement,” Axios reports.

Said Judge John Gleeson:
“In the United States, Presidents do not orchestrate pressure campaigns to get the Justice Department to drop charges against defendants who have pleaded guilty — twice, before two different judges — and whose guilt is obvious… There is clear evidence that this motion reflects a corrupt and politically motivated favor unworthy of our justice system.”

He volunteered for some missions that were especially dangerous, because he had only cloud cover at the target with no accompanying Tuskegee airmen for protection.

If he had been shot down and either captured or killed, as many of our bomber crews were, he would have been a hero.

Short for “anti-fascist,” the label “antifa” gained notoriety in 2017 over the course of several high-profile conflicts between left-wing protesters and the far right in Berkeley, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Charlottesville; and elsewhere. But antifa has been a staple of radical politics across Europe, Latin America and beyond for decades. Even in the United States, this tradition of militant antifascism has a long history under the banner of the Anti-Racist Action network. Despite this history, and a litany of journalistic “explainers” over the past three years, antifa remains largely misunderstood. Here are some of the most popular myths.

Myth No. 1

Antifa is a single organization.

On May 31, President Trump tweeted, “The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization.” Attorney General William P. Barr echoed his sentiments by arguing that antifa is “a revolutionary group that is interested in some form of socialism.” Right-wing figure Chuck Callesto even claimed that Sen. Rand Paul intended to “SUBPOENA ANTIFA plane records, hotel records, all travel records & all funding.”

But Trump cannot designate “ANTIFA” as a terrorist organization because antifa is not an organization. Rather, it is a politics of revolutionary opposition to the far right. There are antifa groups, such as Rose City Antifa in Portland and NYC Antifa, just as there are feminist groups, such as Code Pink. But neither antifa nor feminism is itself an organization. You cannot subpoena an idea or a movement. That’s not to say that antifa doesn’t exist, of course. Antifa is “very real,” as Rep. Jim Jordan has argued, but not in the monolithic, hierarchical way in which he and many other Americans are accustomed to thinking of political associations.

Myth No. 2

Antifa masterminds violence at Black Lives Matter protests.

Police stations were burned, squad cars were destroyed, and property was damaged across the country after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May. Days later, Trump was quick to blame the violence on “ANTIFA and the Radical Left.” The president also promoted a far-right conspiracy theory that a 75-year-old racial justice protester in Buffalo who was shoved to the ground by police, fracturing his skull, “could be an ANTIFA provocateur.” Rudolph W. Giuliani concurred, claiming that “antifa sprang into action and in a flash hijacked the protests into vicious, brutal riots.”

But neither the Justice Department, the FBI nor the press have found evidence to corroborate the grandiose allegation that the most widespread and significant political upheaval this country has seen in half a century was masterminded by one shadowy organization. Not even in Portland. Antifa groups are simply not numerous enough, nor their memberships large enough, nor their politics influential enough to have achieved such massive destruction. Militant anti-fascist groups heavily vet potential members to prevent infiltration from law enforcement or the far right. Some don’t open their ranks to new members at all. Significant investments of time and energy are expected. Such high barriers to entry necessarily keep numbers low.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Myth No. 3

Antifa is affiliated with the Democratic Party.
In August, a fake antifa website began to redirect users to Joe Biden’s campaign site. Though it was clearly a ploy to associate the Democratic Party with antifa, right wingers seized upon the apparent conspiracy. Speaking about the Democrats that same day, Trump claimed that “in my book, it’s virtually part of their campaign, antifa.” According to Ann Coulter, the Democrats are “the Antifa Party.” And columnists have argued that “antifa riots may be part of [a] Democrat power grab” or even that “antifa is the militant wing of the Democratic Party.”

Not only is there no evidence to support such allegations — which are more of an effort to associate liberalism with lawlessness than anything else — but Democratic leaders have routinely condemned antifa and political violence more broadly. For example, in 2017 Nancy Pelosi denounced “the violent actions of people calling themselves antifa” after destructive protests against right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos in Berkeley. When a reporter recently asked Joe Biden, “Do you condemn antifa?,” he responded, “Yes, I do.”

Nor is there any antifa love affair with the Democrats. The vast majority of antifa militants are radical anti-capitalists who oppose the Democratic Party. Some may hold their noses and vote for Biden in November, but many are anarchists who don’t vote at all.

Myth No. 4

Antifa is funded by liberal financiers like George Soros.

Right-wing conspiracy theorists have alleged that egalitarian protest movements, such as Occupy Wall Street or the women’s marches, have been secretly funded for many years by liberal financiers like George Soros. Trump is among those who have accused Soros of funding antifa, while other conservatives, such as Rep. Ken Buck, have dog-whistled this anti-Semitic trope by asking in more general terms “who is funding these violent riots.” Similarly, Rand Paul asked, after being confronted by protesters in D.C.: “Who paid for their hotel rooms? Who flew them in?”

There is no evidence that Soros or any other 1 percenter is bankrolling antifa groups. Receiving financial support from a billionaire would be anathema to their anti-capitalist politics. Like most anarchist, anti-authoritarian or radical groups, antifa organizations don’t have much money at their disposal. What they do have generally comes from members or occasional solidarity fundraisers. Unlike political parties, unions or nongovernmental organizations, they don’t require significant funds. The International Anti-Fascist Defense Fund collects small donations primarily for legal and medical support, but that hardly constitutes the moneyed boogeyman that Republicans have conjured.

Commonsense said...

create increased fear of anti-fascist groups

There's nothing anti-fascist about them. They are are fascist to the core.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Myth No. 5

Antifascists are the 'real fascists.'

Recently Barr described antifa as deploying “fascistic” tactics, and Donald Trump Jr. characterized the movement as having moved “to the book burning phase.” The Internet is awash with articles about how “antifa are the real fascists,” as the Spectator’s Toby Young put it, or the “brownshirts” of the Democratic Party, in radio host Michael Savage’s words. After Charlottesville, Trump called antifascists the “alt-left,” a term that did not stick. These portrayals are often supported by references to antifascists’ disruption of the events of their (far-right) political opponents — a strategy famously deployed by fascists.

Indeed, antifascists and fascists have one thing in common: an illiberal disdain for the confines of mainstream politics. In every other way they are worlds apart. As opposed to their far-right adversaries, antifascists are feminist, anti-racist, anti-capitalists who seek to abolish prisons and police. Comparing antifascists to fascists only makes a bit of sense if one divorces the tactics from the underlying views that animate them. Such comparisons stem from the misguided horseshoe theory: that ultimately political extremes meet. But fascists are the real fascists because they pursue a truly fascist agenda.

Prosecutor Resigns Over Pressure from William Barr

“Federal prosecutor Nora Dannehy, a top aide to U.S. Attorney John H. Durham in his Russia investigation, has quietly resigned from the U.S. Justice Department probe – at least partly out of concern that the investigative team is being pressed for political reasons to produce a report before its work is done,” the Hartford Courant reports.

“Colleagues said Dannehy is not a supporter of President Trump and has been concerned in recent weeks by what she believed was pressure from Barr — who appointed Durham — to produce results before the election. They said she has been considering resignation for weeks, conflicted by loyalty to Durham and concern about politics.”

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

The October surprise might not happen.

There’s one less investigator investigating the investigators.

The Hartford Courant reports that Nora R. Dannehy resigned from the Durham investigation this week. That decision, the paper says, was at least partly motivated by alleged attempts at speeding up the investigation for political reasons by Attorney General Bill Barr.

The report cites colleagues of Dannehy’s, who told the paper that, in the Courant’s words, she “has been concerned in recent weeks by what she believed was pressure from Barr — who appointed Durham — to produce results before the election.”

Citing the same anonymous colleagues, the paper also reports that Dannehy has been considering resignation in recent weeks amid “concern about politics.”

The report offered few specifics about the reasons for Dannehy’s concerns. But it notes that other “Durham associates” believe that Barr has been pressuring him to produce some sort of result before the November election.

Trump's greatest vulnerability is the economy – just ask poor Americans
by Rev. William Barber

Yes, the Dow is at a record high and unemployment rates are lower than they have been in decades – but 140 million people are also poor or low wealth

Sixty per cent of African- Americans are poor or low income, as are 64% of Hispanics, but the largest single racial group among America’s poor and low income – 66 million Americans – are white.

Rather than offer a report on the State of the Union, Donald Trump used his annual primetime slot in the House of Representatives to host a re-election rally. The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, summed up the sentiment of the House majority when she stood behind Trump and ripped the text of his speech in half. “I tore up a manifesto of mistruths,” she later said. But of all the lies he told, the president is proudest of the economy he claims is booming. Poor and low-income Americans know that the economy is, in fact, his greatest vulnerability.

Yes, the Dow is at a record high and official unemployment rates are lower than they have been in decades. But measuring the health of the economy by these stats is like measuring the 19th-century’s plantation economy by the price of cotton. However much the slaveholders profited, enslaved people and the poor white farmers whose wages were stifled by free labor did not see the benefits of the boom.

In America today, 140 million people are poor or low wealth. While three individuals own as much wealth as all of them put together, the real cost of living has soared as wages have stagnated.

"Since the 1970s, the number of people who are paying more than a third of their monthly income in rent has doubled, and there is not a single county in the nation where a person working full-time at minimum wage can afford to rent a two-bedroom apartment.

"Sixty per cent of African Americans are poor or low-income, as are 64% of Hispanics, but the largest single racial group among America’s poor and low-income – 66 million Americans – are white.

While Trump stirs racial fears by attacking “sanctuary cities” and black political leaders, there are more white Americans who are unable to meet their basic needs than at any time in this nation’s history. Every day in America roughly 700 people die from poverty. When seven young people died from vaping, Trump called it a national emergency. But for the past four decades, Republicans have racialized poverty while Democrats have run from it, adopting euphemisms like “those who aspire to the middle class” to talk about poor people. By accepting the lie that everyone does better when the economy does better, both parties paved the way for the extremism of a plutocratic presidency.

We know that elites whose stock portfolios and personal taxes have benefited from the Trump tax cuts are going to stand by this president. But those people are an extreme minority – a literal plutocracy – in this nation. The question in 2020 is not whether Trump’s most ardent supporters will stand by him, but whether Democrats will embrace an agenda that can inspire poor and marginalized people to engage in a political system that has simply overlooked them for decades.

Even if Trump doesn’t lose a single vote from 2016, we know he lost the popular vote by more than 3m and won the electoral college by 77,000 votes across Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. If just 3-5% of the poor and low-income people in those states who did not vote in 2016 were motivated to turn out this fall, Trump wouldn’t have a chance. Each and every one of those people, black, white and brown, knows this economy isn’t working for them.

In Kentucky last year, the incumbent governor, Matt Bevin, sought re-election in a state Trump won in 2016 by 30 percentage points. But poor and low-income white people in Appalachia and black and brown people in Louisville and Lexington worked together through the non-partisan Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival to insist that access to healthcare, living wages and high-quality public education for all Kentuckians were not left or right issues, but right or wrong issues. And on each of the issues, Trump and Bevin were wrong. Trump flew in to rally his base for Bevin, but his challenger won. And when the victor, Andy Beshear, gave his victory speech on election night, he quoted the moral language of the Poor People’s Campaign.

As we look toward another election this fall, we know Trump’s campaign is going to be all about the economy. But we also know that message rings hollow for the vast majority of Americans. The work now must be to build power for a broad coalition that can give voice to issues affecting poor and low-income Americans and compel Democrats to speak to them, up and down the ballot.

Yes, Trump’s presidency is a threat to our democracy. But it is not enough to simply resist Trump’s extremism. We must rally together to follow the lead of those who know that this economy isn’t working for most of us. Now is the time to unite and rise together. Now is the time to address poverty and revive the heart of our democracy.

Attorneys for George Floyd’s family on Friday refuted defense claims that Floyd died of complications stemming from a drug overdose while in the custody of Minneapolis police officers in May.

At a press conference that followed a pretrial court hearing in Minneapolis, civil rights attorney Ben Crump said it was the four criminally charged former officers — Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao — who caused Floyd’s death.

Chauvin, who held his knee to Floyd’s neck for over eight minutes, is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death. Kueng, Thao and Lane are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

“They are trying to say that the knee on [Floyd’s] neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds was reasonable,” Crump said. “They are trying to claim some asinine theory about an overdose. America saw what happened. The world saw what happened. And so, who are you going to believe, your eyes or these killer cops?”

In July, Floyd’s family filed a civil lawsuit in federal court against the city of Minneapolis and the four former officers involved in the Black man’s killing.

Floyd died in police custody on May 25 after officers responded to a report of a counterfeit $20 bill that was used at a convenience store. Video taken at the scene showed a handcuffed Floyd being restrained on the ground by Chauvin. Floyd, 46, repeatedly told the officers he couldn’t breathe, according to the video and the criminal complaint in Chauvin’s case.

Floyd’s death sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and led to discussions in several cities about defunding the police — a proposal that would reallocate funding from police departments to other programs and social services.

Attorneys for Chauvin, Lane, Kueng and Thao all appeared in court in Hennepin County on Friday. They’re seeking separate trials for their clients, the Washington Post reported, as each defendant tries to distance himself from his co-defendants and Floyd’s death.

Defense attorney Thomas Plunkett, who represents Kueng, argued in court documents last month that Floyd had fentanyl in his system at the time of his death and had recently taken methamphetamine, Courthouse News reported. The drugs, coupled with Floyd’s health issues, caused his death, Plunkett argued in court documents, citing toxicology reports that determined Floyd had the drugs in his system, Courthouse News reported.

A press release issued in June by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said Floyd had fentanyl and meth in his system, but said his death was caused in part by restraint and neck compression. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

The claims that Floyd contributed to his own death more than the actions of the officers did outraged Floyd’s family and his supporters.

“It’s really a desperate defense,” Chicago attorney Antonio Romanucci, Crump’s co-counsel, said following Friday’s hearing. “They want to coincidentally say that whatever drugs were in his system killed him at the same time that the knee on the neck and the pressure on his back killed him. When you look at this from a legal perspective, the causation perspective, those drugs did nothing to him because we know that he had situational awareness. He was cooperative.”

Terrence Floyd, one of Floyd’s brothers, said he wants the officers to be held accountable.

“Growing up, that’s what I was taught,” he said. “Be accountable for your actions. If you do the crime, you do the time. So why is it different for these guys? It shouldn’t be different. It will not be different. ’Cause we will get justice for my brother.”

Toxicology reports didn't just determine that Floyd had drugs in his system. They determined that he had enough Fentanyl in his system to kill three people.

Moreover, the cause of death according to what the medical examiner will be forced to testify to at trial will not be what he wrote in the immediate death certificate (which was rushed along to satisfy prosecutors).

He will be forced to testify to the actual medical examinations that took place after the initial reports. This testimony is going to say that there was liquid in his lungs consistent with drowning and that there is neither medical evidence to show strangulation or a heart attack (which is what the two initial death certificates suggested).

So I guess, Roger...

That the jury in this case will be provided with the actual "science" - which will show he drowned in his own body fluid in a manner that is consistent with a Fentanyl overdose, which would also be medically and scientifically consistent with the amount of Fentanyl showing in the toxicology report.

Unless of course...

You don't believe they should "listen to science".

The fact that the medical examiner stated in memos to the prosecutors that there was 11 ng/ML of Fentanyl is irrelevant.

The defense believes he was and the kid will be allowed to plead not guilty by reason of self defense.

The prosecutor doesn't get to make that decision for him.

And ultimately you do understand that it goes to a jury... and all 12 of those people will all need to believe that he was not acting in self defense.

Seriously Roger... you don't have to be a lawyer to understand that every prosecutor will claim the people they charge are guilty. But you do understand that every has the RIGHT TO A TRIAL and to be judged by other American citizens... not by the media or social media.

The facts are not in dispute. The first dead sex offender chased him into a parking lot, threw some sort of explosive at him, he charged at the 17 year old and got shot for his efforts. The second dead sex offender attacked the 17 year old with his skateboard and started hitting him on the head.

Now you might not believe that was enough to justify self defense, but unless you move to Wisconsin and get picked to be on the jury, you don't get to make that decision.

Donald Trump has fallen further behind Joe Biden following bombshell reports that the president knowingly misled Americans about the dangers of COVID-19 and privately disparaged dead U.S. soldiers as “suckers” and “losers,” according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.

The survey, which was conducted from Sept. 9 to 11, shows Biden leading Trump by 10 percentage points among registered voters, 49 percent to 39 percent. The previous Yahoo News/YouGov poll found Biden ahead by just 6 points immediately after the Republican National Convention.

The results suggest that a week of unrelenting and unflattering revelations about Trump — from the Atlantic report on his alleged contempt for Americans wounded or killed in war (which appeared on Sept. 3) to Bob Woodward’s recordings of Trump admitting he downplayed the deadliness of COVID-19 (released on Sept. 9) — has damaged the president’s standing with voters.

You would make a terrible attorney

Under Wisconsin statutes that say anyone under 18 who "goes armed" with any deadly weapon is guilty of a Class A misdemeanor, Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, was not old enough to legally carry the assault-style rifle he had.

But John Monroe, a lawyer who specializes in gun rights cases, believes an exception for rifles and shotguns, intended to allow people age 16 and 17 to hunt, could apply

Tom Grieve, a Milwaukee defense lawyer who also specializes in gun cases, agreed the exception might apply beyond hunting, but said that part of the law is poorly drafted. He said he would argue to apply a rule of law that interprets ambiguous criminal statutes in favor of the defendant.

That jarring split screen happened on the eve of the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, which originated in Afghanistan, where the Taliban provided a safe haven for al-Qaeda and its leader Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the plot that killed nearly 3,000 people.
