Stark differences

Four in five Democrats are scared of the Corona virus vs one in four Republicans

I can go forward with the fact that a virus that has killed only 6000 people under the age of 45 makes certain people queasy (largely because they have bought into the scare tactics, hook line and sinker) - but for less than 5% of Democrats to want to return to normal life shows an unhealthy and almost co-dependent manner in dealing with this.

Like it or not, people will not and cannot "social distance" for the rest of time. There are also plenty of serious health concerns (according to health experts) with the long term wearing the sorts of cloth masks that people are wearing. Lastly, we are still experiencing way more depression, divorce, suicide and other mental health related concerns because some people will not allow other people to move on with their lives.

While many are attempting to create the illusion that all of these restrictions, mandates, and orders are somehow unifying and are bringing Americans together for a shared cause, that is just not the case.  No matter how many advertisements you run, or billboards you put up, the facts remain the same. This is a horribly divisive issue that is destined to only end when the mandates and orders cease. There will be no long term victory for those demanding more and more restrictions and mandates.

not so much co-dependent as completely dependent. i've said since the beginning and i'll maintain until the end that the democrat reaction to covid was completely predicated upon using it as a tool to attempt to destroy Trump.

nothing else has worked so a lock-down and cratering the economy was their last best hope.

It's really getting bad for Biden if he can't even get Romney to endorse him.

The game ends 42-10 in favor of the Gerbils

Are we focused on the fact that the Snakes outscored the Gerbils 10-7 in the second half, or do people just see that the Gerbils won the game handily. How much time will the sports pundits discuss that 10-7 second half situation?

No matter how hard you try... you cannot escape the fact that 125K of the 210K deaths have occurred in states with Democratic Governors. Those numbers don't go away because there are more new "cases" per capita in South Dakota or Wyoming than there might be in some other state.

I'm watching the hearing on Barrett and she is skillfully dodging direct questions.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett on Tuesday said at her U.S. Senate confirmation hearing that her religious views would not affect her decisions on the bench and declined to say whether she believes landmark rulings legalizing abortion and gay marriage nationwide were properly decided.

The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing also presented Barrett with a chance to respond to Democratic lawmakers who have been unified in opposing her on what they say would be her role in undermining the Obamacare healthcare law and its protection for patients with pre-existing conditions.

Trump has asked the Senate to confirm Barrett before the Nov. 3 election in which he is seeking a second term in office.

Barrett, facing questioning by senators for the first time, declined to say whether she would consider stepping aside from an upcoming Obamacare case, as Democrats have requested, saying she would follow rules on recusal, which give individual justices the final say.

"That's not a question I can answer in the abstract," Barrett said.

Barrett noted that the new case the court is hearing on Nov. 10 is on a different legal issue to two previous Supreme Court rulings that upheld Obamacare, which she had criticized. Barrett declined to say how she would approach the new case in which Trump and Republican-led states are seeking to invalidate the 2010 law formally called the Affordable Care Act.

The Affordable Care Act is Democratic former President Barack Obama's signature domestic policy achievement and has enabled millions of Americans to obtain medical coverage.

In responding to questions about abortion, which was legalized nationwide by the Supreme Court in a 1973 ruling called Roe v. Wade, Barrett said she would, as in other cases, consider the various factors usually applied when justices weigh whether to overturn a precedent.

"I promise to do that for any issue that comes up, abortion or anything else. I'll follow the law," Barrett said.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the panel's top Democrat, asked Barrett whether she believed Roe v. Wade, which recognized a woman's constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy, was properly decided. She declined to answer.

Feinstein told Barrett it was "disturbing" that she would not give an answer.

Religious conservatives are hoping the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, the committee's chairman, opened the questioning by asking her about her conservative legal philosophy known as originalism, in which laws and the Constitution are interpreted based on the meaning they had at the time they were enacted.

"That meaning doesn't change over time and it's not for me to update it or infuse my own policy views into it," Barrett said.

Graham asked Barrett, a devout Catholic and a favorite of religious conservatives, whether she could set aside her religious beliefs in making decisions as a justice.

"I can," Barrett said.

GAY MARRIAGE

Barrett called the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, for whom she served as a clerk two decades ago, as her mentor, but said she would not always rule the same way as him.

"You would not be getting Justice Scalia, you would be getting Justice Barrett. That is so because originalists don’t always agree," she said.

Questioned by Feinstein, Barrett would not comment on whether she agreed with Scalia that the 2015 Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide was wrongly decided.

"I have no agenda and I do want to be clear that I have never discriminated on the basis of sexual preference and I would not discriminate on the basis of sexual preference," Barrett said.

Barrett declined to answer when Feinstein asked her whether the U.S. Constitution gives the president the authority to unilaterally delay a general election under any circumstances. Barrett said if such a question came before her as a judge she would have to hear arguments and read legal briefs before deciding.

"If I give off the cuff answers then I would be basically a legal pundit. And I don't think we want judges to be legal pundits. We want judges to approach cases thoughtfully and with an open mind," Barrett said.

Barrett was nominated to a lifetime post on the court on Sept. 26 by Trump to replace the late liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Republicans have a 53-47 Senate majority, leaving Democrats with little to no chance of blocking Barrett's confirmation.

If confirmed, Barrett, 48, would tilt the Supreme Court further to the right and give conservative justices a 6-3 majority, making even the unexpected victories on which liberals have prevailed in recent years, including abortion and gay rights, rarer still. She is Trump's third Supreme Court appointment.

What about the scientists and doctors from The Great Barrington Declaration

Caliphate4vr said...

If Democrats truly want to follow the science – rather than the politics -- in the fight against COVID-19, they might want to take a closer look at “The Great Barrington Declaration.”

Organized by infectious-disease experts Dr. Martin Kulldorff of Harvard University, Dr. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford University, it recommends allowing people to live normally despite the virus while protecting the most vulnerable elements of the population so as to avoid the lockdowns’ devastating physical, mental, economic, and educational impacts.

The mainstream media has essentially ignored the Declaration, but to date over 5,500 medical and public health scientists and 11,000 medical practitioners have signed it. That numbers continue to grow.

The Declaration expresses “grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies,” pointing out that the “heaviest burden” is falling on “working-class and younger members of society.”

When Neil Ferguson visited the heart of British government in London’s Downing Street, he was much closer to the COVID-19 pandemic than he realized. Ferguson, a mathematical epidemiologist at Imperial College London, briefed officials in mid-March on the latest results of his team’s computer models, which simulated the rapid spread of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 through the UK population. Less than 36 hours later, he announced on Twitter that he had a fever and a cough. A positive test followed. The disease-tracking scientist had become a data point in his own project.

Ferguson is one of the highest-profile faces in the effort to use mathematical models that predict the spread of the virus — and that show how government actions could alter the course of the outbreak. “It’s been an immensely intensive and exhausting few months,” says Ferguson, who kept working throughout his relatively mild symptoms of COVID-19. “I haven’t really had a day off since mid-January.”

Research does not get much more policy-relevant than this. When updated data in the Imperial team’s model1 indicated that the United Kingdom’s health service would soon be overwhelmed with severe cases of COVID-19, and might face more than 500,000 deaths if the government took no action, Prime Minister Boris Johnson almost immediately announced stringent new restrictions on people’s movements. The same model suggested that, with no action, the United States might face 2.2 million deaths; it was shared with the White House and new guidance on social distancing quickly followed (see ‘Simulation shock’).

Most of those people who died were a bad cold, a flu, or another virus away from death to begin with. There was literally nothing anyone was going to do to prevent them from dying. This virus has gone through most of the world and literally nobody has been able to prevent people from dying.

That is what a fucking virus does.

It doesn't give a rat's ass who is President or what political party is in charge. It doesn't care what a poll says. It just goes about it's business of infecting people.

But the reality is that we cannot control any of that any more than we can control the "weather". As much as liberals love to believe that a bunch of selfish money grubbing power happy politicians can save the world from disease and weather, the fact is that they cannot.

If you believe that they can... then you are an idiot.

What the Government "did" control was how many people lost their jobs, lost their businesses, lost their homes, lost their life savings. What your Government "did do" was raise unemployment by almost 1.5 times in your states with Democrats in the Governorship than with Republicans.

You mean compared to Sweden...

Where they have done none of this. No lock downs. No mandated social distancing. No mask mandates.

Less deaths per capita than the United States.

Let's dispense with the obligatory "population density argument" as the fact is that the vast majority of Swedes (nearly 90%) live in the Urban areas of the country. They are not a bunch of mountain men living miles from the next person. They mostly live in 2% of the country's actual physical area.

So please explain to us Roger...

How it is that Sweden did not have thousands more or tens of thousands more dead (as you suggest would have happened here had we followed that model).

Because after initially looking bad, Sweden now looks like they had most of this correct and people in Sweden are very happy with how they were treated as people during this pandemic.

No big political divide for Sweden. They preferred to be adults and be treated as such. They are not children who want to be told what to do (like liberals).

On 25 September, Hansson announced the Royal Swedish Academy had assembled an expert group to compare the Swedish response with that of other countries and recommend how “researchers can best contribute to future crisis situations.”

FoHM “should have listened more carefully to the scientific community both inside and outside the country,”

Joe Biden is just ahead in the FiveThirtyEight polling average.

What’s clear is that COVID-19 is not as deadly as researchers originally thought and nations and states that did not lockdown did not see an explosion of deaths and cases (though they suffered far less economic destruction).

The fact that Sweden did not lockdown and now has fewer deaths per capita than the US, which did experience economic lockdowns in most of the country, doesn’t prove that lockdowns don’t work. Just like the fact that Sweden had more deaths than Scandanavian neighbors like Finland and Norway doesn’t prove that lockdowns saved lives.

It’s simply more evidence that the correlation between lockdowns and COVID-19 deaths is extremely weak. And to the extent a correlation exists, it’s actually negative.

Indeed, if you subtract three lockdown states from the US totals—New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts, which account for 31 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in the US—the United States’s numbers suddenly plummet to 399 per million, below Bolivia and slightly above Columbia.

The year 2020 will go down in history as a historic calamity. But this was not because COVID-19 struck (deadly respiratory viruses have existed as long as humans have), but because central planners erroneously believed the best way to protect humanity from an invisible respiratory virus was to order healthy people to remain in their homes under almost all conditions, in many cases under threat of fine or imprisonment.

Planners made the fatal mistake of ignoring F.A. Hayek’s famous advice, delivered in his 1974 Nobel Prize-winning speech, to act humbly with their awesome power.

"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design," Hayek later wrote in The Fatal Conceit. “To the naive mind that can conceive of order only as the product of deliberate arrangement, it may seem absurd that in complex conditions order, and adaptation to the unknown, can be achieved more effectively by decentralizing decisions and that a division of authority will actually extend the possibility of overall order. Yet that decentralization actually leads to more information being taken into account.”

The results of lockdowns have indeed been fatal. But it’s not too late to learn the truth of Hayek’s important lesson.

Exactly stupid, they only delayed the inevitable. It’s a VIRUS

and most importantly, no one in sweden had any incentive to politicize it like we did.

they acknowledged it, reacted to it, planned and managed it, and dealt with it.

here we had to weaponize it to bring political harm to the BAD ORANGE MAN, because every other effort to oust him FAILED and failed in a spectacular fashion.

Trump took extraordinary measures to deal with it- measures that largely went UNUSED.

every whiny-assed governor received everything they asked for plus some.

if this had happened under chocolate jesus we would never have had any of these conversations, and the 200,000+ deaths wouldn't even make the evening news.

Charlie Cook Report
Was Trump Ever Really a Favorite for Reelection?
Earlier this week, this column suggested that there were some signs of an impending electoral blowout,
pointing to the release of the first two quality post-debate polls. A national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, taken last Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, the nights immediately following that debate debacle between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, showed the Democrat with a 14-point lead. The race had been showing an 8-point Biden lead, give or take a point, and while Trump obviously did himself a lot of damage, that was a lot of movement awfully fast. I wondered if the sample might be a bit too Democratic or whether the survey was taken too soon after the event.

The other survey, taken in Arizona for The New York Times and Siena College, put Biden ahead by 8 points, a big lead considering that Trump carried the state in 2016 by almost 4 points. The column also reflected some private conversations I had with several very experienced campaign consultants in both parties, indicating that they were seeing things in many surveys around the country showing some pretty seismic shifts away from Trump and Republicans and toward Biden and Democrats.

Since that column was published, two more similarly high-quality national surveys have come out, which have only served to buttress its conclusions. A SSRS poll for CNN, taken Oct. 1-4, put Biden’s lead over Trump at 15 points among registered voters, 56 to 41 percent. When the pollsters restricted the sample to likely voters, his lead swelled to 16 points, 57 to 41 percent.

Next came a Fox News poll, taken Saturday through Tuesday, which showed Biden leading Trump by 9 points among registered voters, 52 to 43 percent. Among likely voters, the lead also grew by a point, to 53 to 43 percent. The previous Fox poll, taken Sept. 7-10, put Biden’s leads at 5 points among both registered and likely voters, 51 to 46 percent.

A variety of state-level polling in battleground states reflect the severity of the president’s situation. Apart from its Arizona poll, the NYT/Siena College pollsters also surveyed voters in Florida and Pennsylvania. NBC/Marist was in the field in Michigan and Wisconsin. Taken together, the surveys show how uphill this struggle has become for Trump. Even in Ohio, a state that has been trending Republican for years, another NYT/Siena poll shows the race essentially tied.

Furthermore, Biden has already been building a big lead as the days on the calendar pass by. According to the University of Florida’s Michael McDonald, 6.6 million ballots have already been cast, representing 4.8 percent of the total votes cast in the entire 2016 election. In the eight states that report the party splits of voters, Democrats have returned twice as many votes as Republicans....

Job-approval ratings are the best single predictor of whether a president is reelected. Trump suffered through his first year in office with an average Gallup approval of just 38 percent, the lowest of any post-World War II elected incumbent. (Bill Clinton at 49 percent was the previous record holder.) His second-year approvals averaged just 40 percent, the worst such rating for a post-war elected incumbent. His third year ticked up to 42 percent, topping only Jimmy Carter’s 37 percent. Overall, he’s averaged a 41 percent Gallup approval average for the entirety of his presidency so far. Through that prism, there was little reason to see him as a favorite.

Given those numbers, Trump was already on thin ice heading into the coronavirus pandemic. After three months of belittling the severity and lethality of the outbreak and touting dubious remedies, the ice under his feet got still thinner. With his debate performance, it gave way and down he went.

Swing voters in particular have been gradually turning down the volume on the president. After the debate, they finally hit mute and stopped listening entirely.

All eyes now turn to the Senate, to see if Republicans can save their majority.

American revolutionaries like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were influenced by an Enlightenment philosophy which stressed that liberty and equality were natural human rights. They believed in cultivating virtue, leadership and community. Despite the pervasiveness of slavery in 18th-century America, both promoted a government that guaranteed the rights and freedoms of its citizens.

For many the Enlightenment ended with the French Revolution in 1789. However, for Americans like Jefferson and Franklin it expanded as their republic, based on the separation of powers and judicial independence, prospered.

In a very real sense the postwar order bequeathed on the West by the US was based on Enlightenment values. The encouragement of trade under a rules-based system and a liberal political order lead to the breaking down barriers, and growing interaction across borders.

The US-mandated postwar order also suited the world's biggest economy, facilitating its expansion abroad. Admittedly US enthusiasm for pluralism stopped at tolerating communist governments in its own region, like Cuba, and further abroad in countries like Vietnam.

Since the advent of the Global Financial Crisis the Enlightenment-influenced, US-led world order, rooted in optimism and belief in progress, has been under direct threat. Ballooning debt, gyrating currencies, sluggish economic growth, and a flood of refugees from the Middle East and North Africa have led to the rise of nationalism, protectionism and xenophobia – all summed up in the word populism.

The latter has almost as many definitions as followers. Populism tends to simplify, even demonise, issues like economic decline and the impact of refugees, in sharp contrast the Enlightenment values of rationality and pluralism.

Then along comes Trump, a New York realtor, who gave added meaning to populism. Campaigning during the presidential election, Trump threatened to build a wall between the US and Mexico to stop illegal migrants, also accused by Trump of being "rapists".

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

O what a fall was there, my countrymen.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

This is before we get onto Trump cheering on the possible further fragmenting of the European Union. The post-Second World War EU is itself a creation resonating with Enlightenment ideals of open borders and tolerance.

But, it may not be all one way. Alexandre Lefebvre, associate professor of philosophy and government at Sydney University, gives Trump a mixed report card on the question of the Enlightenment, saying he has "aligned himself with as many elements as he runs roughshod over".

Trump extols the "triumph of emotion over reason", he says and has made "truth suspendable". Both actions are antithetical to the Enlightenment, Lefebvre says, but a key quality of that epoch is "popular sovereignty and that is what Trump is riding on".

The French Revolution – one of several revolutions that happened as the Enlightenment developed – reflecting people's desire to control their futures and have their own economic destiny. Some historians see the French Revolution as the end of the Enlightenment. Supplied

Where will it all end? Former US house speaker Newt Gingrich told The New York Times on Monday Trump "has to keep America safe and create a lot of jobs. If he does those two things, everything else is noise."

We shall see.

Scott, Facebook has banned your shit

Facebook said Tuesday that it will ban ads that "explicitly" discourage vaccine use, expanding on its policy to reject vaccine hoaxes.

The social media company's head of health, Kang-Xing Jin, and Rob Leathern, director of product management, announced the ban against such ads in a joint statement.

"We already don't allow ads with vaccine hoaxes that have been publicly identified by leading global health organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention," they said in the joint statement. "Now, if an ad explicitly discourages someone from getting a vaccine, we'll reject it. Enforcement will begin over the next few days.'

They added that the ban will not include ads that advocate for or against legislation or government policies around vaccines, but those ads will have to be authorized and will include a "paid for by" label for people to see who is behind them.

"If an ad that advocates for/against legislation or government policies explicitly discourages a vaccine, it will be rejected," a Facebook spokesperson told CNBC. "That includes portraying vaccines as useless, ineffective, unsafe or unhealthy, describing the disease vaccines are created for as harmless, or the ingredients in vaccines as harmful or deadly."

Facebook officials also said in the statement Tuesday that the social media platform will launch a new flu vaccine information campaign and work with global health partners to increase immunization rates. This work includes working with the World Health Organization and UNICEF on public messaging campaigns to increase immunization rates with such rates still being low in many parts of the world.

here you go alky. this woman is so extreme it's laughable. but no, it's not a parody.

had Trump gone apeshit as you wished, we would have had tens of millions of whack jobs just like this woman.:

If I pass all these tests, I can enter the world. I fold a tissue and place it inside the top of my mask to absorb moisture and prevent steaming or sweating. I wear a face shield over my mask should anyone sneeze or cough on me, which might protect from droplets, although I know that aerosols can creep around facial shields.

I protect my eyes with “onion goggles” that have a sponge around the inside and provides a tighter fit than regular glasses. I wash them with soap and water, which seems to reduce fogging better than the “fog cloths” I purchased.

I wear disposable gloves and keep extra ones in my glove compartment and handbag, which I remove from my wrist and turn inside out, disposing of them in the nearest trash receptacle without touching.

I remove everything before I get in my car (or house) if I’ve been somewhere like a doctor’s office. In the car, I put everything in a large brown paper bag and drench my hands with sanitizer I keep away from the sun, so the alcohol doesn’t start a fire. I sanitize the car’s indoor and outdoor door handles, steering wheel, gear shift and radio buttons before I turn the air conditioner off and open the front and back windows during the trip so anything left will hopefully fly away.

Once home, having been careful not to touch my face on the trip there, I immediately wash my hands. I place each hand over the other and rub with interlaced fingers, exchanging hands, and making sure to also wash between the fingers as well as the fingertips and thumbs, which I rub rotationally in both directions. Every few washes a day, I use a nail brush under my nails and moisturizer on my hands, since I read that if your hands dry out from all the washing, the virus can hide in microscopic cracks in the skin. Once I sanitize the doorknob, I wash my face and then sanitize toilet handles and faucets.

The next thing is not something I am suggesting you do; a friend of mine who worked for Pfizer told me that as long as I’m buying the soap, I should stick some up into each nostril and wash it out a bit. He also suggested isopropyl alcohol, not to drink, but to dip a Q-Tip in and then gently move it around the inside of each nostril. It may sound almost as ridiculous as the suggestion to somehow put bleach into our bodies, but a little bit of soap and alcohol probably can’t hurt. I also dab my eyelids with Ocusoft Lid Scrub in the hopes that any virus on my eyelids won’t go any further.

I also order absolutely everything online so I will not have to go to a store. If I have to sign a credit card slip, I use the pen I keep in the car and handbag.

Ronny Jackson, the former White House physician-turned-GOP congressional candidate, suggested on Tuesday that Democratic nominee Joe Biden is mentally unfit for office, citing what he called cognitive decline.

The remarks from Jackson, who has not evaluated Biden, came during a phone call organized by President Trump’s campaign and are part of a sustained effort by Trump's allies to highlight Biden's gaffes on the campaign trail, arguing they make him mentally incapable of serving as commander in chief.

Jackson said Tuesday that he was speaking as a “concerned citizen” and not as a Republican congressional candidate.
