There was the positive test result for a prominent conservative GOP senator, Mike Lee of Utah. Then another for Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina. Then the same news from Trump’s campaign manager, the chairwoman of the Republican Party and his former White House counselor.
And then on Saturday, as the president remained hospitalized, came word of two more high-profile Republicans close to the president testing positive for the virus — Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who had helped Trump prepare for last week’s debate.
After months in which Trump and others in his party questioned the danger of the virus and refused to take precautions such as wearing masks, the Republican Party is now coming face to face with the scientific realities of the pandemic.

The drip-drip-drip of positive tests, coupled with the specter of a president who as of Saturday was “not on a clear path to a full recovery,” as White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows put it, has prompted some Republicans to question whether the party is responsible for its own potential undoing.
And it has left them wondering how to wage a strong closing campaign when the judgment, actions and competence of its leaders were so squarely at issue just as voting is getting underway across the country.
“There was a panic before this started, but now we’re sort of the stupid party,” said Edward J. Rollins, co-chairman of the pro-Trump super PAC Great America. “Candidates are being forced to defend themselves every day on whether they agree with this or that, in terms of what the president did on the virus.”

“The president and the people around him flouted the rules,” said Republican strategist Michael Steel, who was an aide to former House Speaker John Boehner. “We wish him and his family a speedy recovery, but he has been reckless, and voters dealing with the health and economic effects on them and their families won’t look on that kindly.”

The monthly Democracy Institute Sunday Express poll for the Presidential election shows that Mr Trump is still on course for victory with 46 percent of the popular support compared to his Democrat rival Joe Biden’s 45 percent.

However, his overall lead has dropped by two points since the last poll in September.

The poll was completed after the news broke that President Trump and his wife Melania have been infected by Covid-19.

But 68 percent said the illness would not affect their vote while 19 percent said they were “more likely” to support Trump and only 13 percent “less likely”.

Almost two thirds said they felt sympathy and concern for the President while 38 percent said him getting the disease was “karma” in an indication of the current divisive nature of US politics.

Crucially, Mr Trump’s lead in key swing states including Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin remains at 4 percent by 47 percent 43 percent.

This gives a projected Electoral College split of 320 to Trump and 218 to Biden.

While other polls have Biden ahead, the Democracy Institute, which correctly predicted Brexit and Trump’s win in 2016, only considers people who identify as “likely voters” rather than all registered voters and also asks about the so called shy vote.

This shows that 77 percent of Trump supporters would not admit it to friends or family members.

On the surface, Biden is rather like a middlebrow Sinclair Lewis character version of Yasser Arafat, telling one thing to moderate Democrats and another thing to progressives, the AOC/Bernie crowd. Only Joe has to deal with both sides in English while lucky Yasser could switch back and forth between Arabic and English.

Joe’s refusal to answer whether or not he would pack the Supreme Court is a perfect representation of who he is—a confused coward who happens to be running for president.

Nevertheless, if we are to believe the polls (and I don’t, really, but arguendo…) Biden enjoys a sizable lead a month off from the election.

This can largely be ascribed to the mainstream media whose hatred for Trump was manifest the moment he rode down the escalator to announce his candidacy.

Almost simultaneously, if you think about it, a cabal of intelligence and FBI agents, evidently with the approval of the previous administration, began a treasonous attempt to prevent Trump’s election or, failing that, to discredit him. Then came the impeachment trial over Ukraine when it was Biden & Son who deserved to be impeached for their activities in that country.

All of this has resulted in an unprecedented level of hate and vengeance in our country that seems unending.

But as with the French Revolution, eventually these things go too far and burn out. Now we have reached a kind of apotheosis of hate that portends some kind of ending.

With Trump contracting the sometimes fatal disease that has been plaguing the planet, Twitter and other sources were littered with people (leftists of course) not wishing him well (like decent grown-ups) but wishing he die.

This started not more than an hour, or was it minutes, after it was announced Trump had contracted the disease. These leftists included leaders of the Democratic Party and, needless to say, well-known cable TV pundits, many of them filthy rich and hypocritical beyond belief.

Over the last few years, Trump has frequently been accused of “going too far.” This would be the end. But it is the left that has now gone too far, lusting for death—and the whole world is/was watching.

They are the new Robespierres and they are headed for their own self-inflicted, metaphorical guillotines.

In the aftermath of Trump’s contracting COVID-19, they are reelecting him.

Last week, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) teamed up with five other groups funded by George Soros to pressure tech companies to “reduce hateful activities on their platforms.” While this sounds like a noble goal, mainstream conservative and Christian groups that have fallen afoul of the SPLC warned that these liberal organizations have an “Orwellian” definition of hate that most Americans would disagree with. Worse, social media companies already seem biased against conservatives, and this SPLC campaign would only embolden that bias.

On Wednesday, the SPLC led a coalition of groups in releasing “Change the Terms,” aiming to convince Big Tech to “reduce hateful activities on their platforms.” The coalition warned that “white supremacist and other organizations that incite hate are using online platforms to organize, fund, recruit supporters for, and normalize racism, sexism, religious bigotry, as well as anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigrant animus, among other activities.”

While the overwhelming majority of Americans abhor wicked ideologies like white supremacy, the SPLC boldly associates its political opponents with similar “hate,” smearing them as “hate groups” to be compared with the KKK.

“It’s obviously concerning that they want to censor free speech, and of course their definition of ‘hate speech’ is not what most people think of as hate speech,” Mat Staver, founder and chairman of the Christian legal nonprofit Liberty Counsel, told PJ Media.

“Most people think of hate speech as somebody encouraging physical violence,” Staver argued. Groups like the SPLC “extend it to anybody who doesn’t accept their view on LGBT issues, same-sex marriage, abortion, immigration, or Islam.”

Indeed, the SPLC paid $3.375 million to settle a defamation lawsuit from Maajid Nawaz, a Muslim reformer the SPLC had branded an “anti-Muslim extremist.” Following this settlement, Staver told PJ Media that 60 groups like Liberty Counsel — which has been branded a “hate group” by the SPLC — were considering separate defamation lawsuits against the smear factory.

Staver argued that the SPLC’s definition of “hate” reminds him of the outright lying associated with George Orwell’s famous classic 1984. “Their definition is Orwellian,” he said. “Their definition is no different than Bill Clinton’s, ‘It depends on what the definition of is is.'”

We are just weeks away from two important dates: Election Day, on November 3, and November 10, the day the Supreme Court will take up the case that will decide whether the Affordable Care Act will survive.

President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell want to rush the President's nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett through the Senate and onto the Supreme Court before those two dates arrive.

On February 13, 2016, when Justice Antonin Scalia passed away in a presidential election year, Sen. McConnell said, "The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President."

The so-called "McConnell rule" was clear and unambiguous. And in 2016, Republicans fell in line behind it. They said the American people should have a voice, and election year Supreme Court vacancies should be filled in the next presidential term.

But when Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away on September 18, after Americans had already started voting in the 2020 presidential election, Sen. McConnell reversed his position and announced he would confirm her replacement this year.

Citing historical precedent from the 1880s, Sen. McConnell has claimed that whether or not the American people get a voice in an election year vacancy should depend on whether the same party that controls the Senate controls the White House.

Of course, he conveniently overlooks the fact that in the presidential election year of 1988, a Democratic-controlled Senate confirmed Justice Anthony Kennedy, the nominee of a Republican President.


But setting aside Sen. McConnell's selective recollection of precedent, why should the composition of the Senate dictate whether or not the American people "should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice"? Either the American people do get an election year voice regarding the future of the court, or they don't. In 2016 Sen. McConnell said they do; now he says they don't. It's a flip-flop, plain and simple.

This is not just some abstract Washington debate. The stakes are enormous for millions of Americans all over the country.

President Trump has made clear he wants to strike down the entire Affordable Care Act. That is the position the Trump administration has taken before the Supreme Court in a case that will be argued on November 10, exactly one week after Election Day.

President Trump has also made clear what he's looking for in a Supreme Court justice when it comes to the Affordable Care Act.

Just this week, President Trump tweeted, "Obamacare will be replaced with a MUCH better, and FAR cheaper, alternative if it is terminated in the Supreme Court. Would be a big WIN for the USA!"

Let me be clear on two points. First, this effort to rip away health care would not "be a big WIN for the USA." If Republicans are successful, an estimated 600,000 people in my state of Illinois alone could lose health care coverage, and millions more in my state -- even those with employer-sponsored insurance -- would lose protections for pre-existing conditions.

At the time of writing, we have nearly 300,000 Illinoisans who have contracted Covid-19 and joined those with asthma, diabetes and heart disease in having a pre-existing condition. As many as 133 million Americans have pre-existing conditions, according to a 2017 Department of Health report. In the middle of a pandemic, who thinks it is a good idea to return to the days when insurance companies could deny coverage, charge women more than men or impose arbitrary caps on benefits?

Second, Republicans have no plan to replace the Affordable Care Act if they succeed in striking it down. Recall that in June 2019, President Trump swore that he had a "phenomenal" health care plan and that he would be announcing it in "two months." Still, we have nothing.

Last month, I questioned senior health officials in the Trump administration about the President's repeated claims about having a replacement plan for the ACA. All three witnesses testified they were not aware of any replacement plan.

Republicans were never able to repeal the Affordable Care Act on the Senate floor, thanks to the late Sen. John McCain, an American hero, joining every Democrat in opposing repeal. So Republicans are trying to accomplish in the courts what they could not accomplish in Congress.

If President Trump and Sen. McConnell go through with their plan to jam through a Supreme Court nominee this year, the Affordable Care Act and its protections for pre-existing conditions will almost certainly be struck down.

And that is why my Republican colleagues refuse to do what they insisted on doing in 2016 and give the American people a voice in the selection of the next justice.

Senate Democrats will not take this lying down. By using every tool at our disposal on the floor and in committee and by making sure the American people are aware of what is at stake with this Supreme Court nomination, we will fight for the future of the Affordable Care Act.

The Democratic nominee is now ahead of Trump by 14 points among registered voters, 53 percent to 39 percent — up from his 8-point lead in the previous poll before the debate.

That 14-point advantage represents Biden’s largest lead in the NBC News/WSJ poll during the entirety of the 2020 presidential campaign; his previous high was 11 points in July.


“The clear loser from the debate was Donald Trump,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.

“And at least for the short term, this has damaged his standing against Joe Biden,” Horwitt added.

But McInturff, the GOP pollster, cautions that the survey could represent a “shock to the system” right after a consequential debate. (Democrats, for instance, hold a 9-point advantage in party identification in this poll, compared with 5- to 6-point advantages in past ones.)

A White House team of doctors said on Saturday morning Trump's condition was improving and that he was already talking about returning to the White House.

Within minutes, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows gave reporters a less rosy assessment, saying, "The president's vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We're still not on a clear path to a full recovery."

Jason Miller, a senior adviser to President Trump’s re-election campaign, argued to ABC News that Joe Biden has often “used the mask as a prop” and defended the campaign’s handling of the coronavirus even as Trump remained in the hospital.

Said Miller:
“You know, I would say that with regard to Joe Biden, I think too often he’s used the mask as a prop. A mask is very important, but even if he’s — he could be 20, 30 feet away from the nearest person and still have the mask on.”

He added: “That’s not going to change anything that’s out there. But also we’ve seen with — with Joe Biden, I mean, we can’t all just stay in our basement for the rest of our lives.”

Problems with mood and fatigue
People who have severe symptoms of COVID-19 often have to be treated in a hospital's intensive care unit, with mechanical assistance such as ventilators to breathe. Simply surviving this experience can make a person more likely to later develop post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression and anxiety.

Because it's difficult to predict long-term outcomes from the new COVID-19 virus, scientists are looking at the long-term effects seen in related viruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Many people who have recovered from SARS have gone on to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, a complex disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that worsens with physical or mental activity, but doesn't improve with rest. The same may be true for people who have had COVID-19.

Many long-term COVID-19 effects still unknown
Much is still unknown about how COVID-19 will affect people over time. However, researchers recommend that doctors closely monitor people who have had COVID-19 to see how their organs are functioning after recovery.

It's important to remember that most people who have COVID-19 recover quickly. But the potentially long-lasting problems from COVID-19 make it even more important to reduce the spread of the disease by following precautions such as wearing masks, avoiding crowds and keeping hands clean.
