What?

New Yorker suspends CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin after he masturbated during Zoom call! But why hasn't CNN done the same?

You literally could not make this shit up folks?

And here I was embarrassed to find out my camera was on during a teams meeting when I hadn't showered and wasn't wearing a hat. Messy hair, however, is nothing compared to messy... well... I won't go there. What was this guy thinking?

Why didn't the Republican party suspend him?

The transcription is by Penn Bullock of The New York Times.

Donald J. Trump: You know and ...

Unknown: She used to be great. She’s still very beautiful.

Trump: I moved on her, actually. You know, she was down on Palm Beach. I moved on her, and I failed. I’ll admit it.

Unknown: Whoa.

Trump: I did try and fuck her. She was married.

Unknown: That’s huge news.

Trump: No, no, Nancy. No, this was [unintelligible] — and I moved on her very heavily. In fact, I took her out furniture shopping.

She wanted to get some furniture. I said, “I’ll show you where they have some nice furniture.” I took her out furniture —

I moved on her like a bitch. But I couldn’t get there. And she was married. Then all of a sudden I see her, she’s now got the big phony tits and everything. She’s totally changed her look.

Billy Bush: Sheesh, your girl’s hot as shit. In the purple.

Trump: Whoa! Whoa!

Bush: Yes! The Donald has scored. Whoa, my man!

[Crosstalk]

Trump: Look at you, you are a pussy.

[Crosstalk]

Trump: All right, you and I will walk out.

[Silence]

Trump: Maybe it’s a different one.

Bush: It better not be the publicist. No, it’s, it’s her, it’s —

Trump: Yeah, that’s her. With the gold. I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.

Bush: Whatever you want.

Trump: Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.

Bush: Uh, yeah, those legs, all I can see is the legs.

Trump: Oh, it looks good.

Bush: Come on shorty.

Trump: Ooh, nice legs, huh?

Bush: Oof, get out of the way, honey. Oh, that’s good legs. Go ahead.

Trump: It’s always good if you don’t fall out of the bus. Like Ford, Gerald Ford, remember?

Bush: Down below, pull the handle.

Trump: Hello, how are you? Hi!

Arianne Zucker: Hi, Mr. Trump. How are you? Pleasure to meet you.

Trump: Nice seeing you. Terrific, terrific. You know Billy Bush?

Bush: Hello, nice to see you. How you doing, Arianne?

Zucker: Doing very well, thank you. Are you ready to be a soap star?

Trump: We’re ready, let’s go. Make me a soap star.

Bush: How about a little hug for the Donald? He just got off the bus.

Zucker: Would you like a little hug, darling?

Trump: O.K., absolutely. Melania said this was O.K.

Bush: How about a little hug for the Bushy? I just got off the bus.

Zucker: Bushy, Bushy.

Bush: Here we go. Excellent. Well, you’ve got a nice co-star here.

Zucker: Yes, absolutely.

Trump: Good. After you.

[Break in video]

Trump: Come on, Billy, don’t be shy.

Bush: Soon as a beautiful woman shows up, he just, he takes off. This always happens.

Trump: Get over here, Billy.

Zucker: I’m sorry, come here.

Bush: Let the little guy in here, come on.

Zucker: Yeah, let the little guy in. How you feel now? Better? I should actually be in the middle.

Bush: It’s hard to walk next to a guy like this.

Zucker: Here, wait, hold on.

Bush: Yeah, you get in the middle, there we go.

Trump: Good, that’s better.

Zucker: This is much better. This is —

Trump: That’s better.

Zucker: [Sighs]

Bush: Now, if you had to choose honestly between one of us. Me or the Donald?

Trump: I don’t know, that’s tough competition.

Zucker: That’s some pressure right there.

Bush: Seriously, if you had — if you had to take one of us as a date.

Zucker: I have to take the Fifth on that one.

Bush: Really?

Zucker: Yup — I’ll take both.

Trump: Which way?

Zucker: Make a right. Here we go. [inaudible]

Bush: Here he goes. I’m gonna leave you here.

Trump: O.K.

Bush: Give me my microphone.

Trump: O.K. Oh, you’re finished?

Bush: You’re my man, yeah.

Trump: Oh, good.

Bush: I’m gonna go do our show.

Zucker: Oh, you wanna reset? O.K.

Early Voting In Texas Soars
2:15 pm
David Wasserman notes that more people have now early voted in Texas than the number of people who voted for Donald Trump in Texas in 2016.

Tech Donors Unleash $100 Million In Ads Against Trump
2:11 pm
“A little-known Democratic super PAC backed by some of Silicon Valley’s biggest donors is quietly unleashing a torrent of television spending in the final weeks of the presidential campaign in a last-minute attempt to oust President Trump,” Recode reports.

“The barrage of late money — which includes at least $22 million from Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz — figures among one of the most expensive and aggressive plays yet by tech billionaires, who have spent years studying how to maximize the return they get from each additional dollar they spend on politics.
"Moskovitz is placing his single biggest public bet yet on the evidence that TV ads that come just before Election Day are the best way to do that.”

Pandemic Has Caused Nearly 300K More Deaths

“The coronavirus pandemic has left about 285,000 more people dead in the United States than would be expected in a typical year, two-thirds of them from covid-19 itself and the rest from other causes,” the Washington Post reports.

“The CDC said the novel coronavirus, which causes covid-19, has taken a disproportionate toll on Latinos and Blacks, as previous analyses have noted. But the CDC also found, surprisingly, that it has struck 25- to 44-year-olds very hard: Their ‘excess death’ rate is up 26.5 percent over previous years, the largest change for any age group.”

Trump Says Adam Schiff Should Be ‘Put Away’
1:39 pm
President Trump called for House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) to be “put away” for saying the Hunter Biden laptop stories are part of a smear campaign that originated as part of Russian disinformation, the Daily Beast reports.

Said Trump:
“It’s just crazy. I saw Shifty Schiff get up yesterday and say this is Russia. He’s a sick man. He is so sick. We went through two and a half years of that, plus. This guy, he ought to be put away, or he ought to be, you know, something should happen with him.”
_____

Says James:
Trump's just crazy. I saw how he behaved in the first debate. He’s a sick man. He is so sick. We have gone though almost four years of that, plus. This guy, he ought to be put away -- or he ought to be, you know, something should happen with him.

FBI: Did you just threaten the life of the President of the United States?

James: Did he just threaten the life of Adam Schiff?

McRaven Endorses Biden
3:10 pm

Retired Navy Adm. William McRaven explains in the Wall Street Journal why he voted for Joe Biden.

“This week I went to the polls in Texas. Truth be told, I am a pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, small-government, strong-defense and a national-anthem-standing conservative.
"But, I also believe
that black lives matter,
that the Dreamers deserve a path to citizenship,
that diversity and inclusion are essential to our national success,
that education is the great equalizer,
that climate change is real and
that the First Amendment is the cornerstone of our democracy.

"Most important, I believe that America must lead in the world with courage, conviction and a sense of honor and humility.

“If we remain indifferent to our role in the world,
if we retreat from our obligation to our citizens and our allies and
if we fail to choose the right leader,
then we will pay the highest price for our neglect and shortsightedness.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Tuesday that an additional seven states may join the antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department against Alphabet Inc.’s Google in the coming weeks.

James and the attorneys general of Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Utah, released a joint statement Tuesday, saying they plan to conclude parts of an ongoing bipartisan investigation into Google’s anti-competitive market behavior in the coming weeks. They will then decide whether to file a complaint and would file a motion to consolidate with the case filed by the DOJ on Tuesday. It would be litigated cooperatively, “much as we did in the Microsoft case.”

Fucking moron Killer Cuomo has just extended the commercial eviction moratorium to January 1 2021...

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed an Executive Order extending the state's moratorium on COVID-related commercial evictions and foreclosures through January 1. This measure extends protections already in place for commercial tenants and mortgagors in recognition of the financial toll the pandemic has taken on business owners, including retail establishments and restaurants. The extension of this protection gives commercial tenants and mortgagors additional time to get back on their feet and catch up on rent or their mortgage, or to renegotiate their lease terms to avoid foreclosure moving forward.

"The health and economic impacts of this pandemic have been devastating, and we are continuing to do everything we can to support people who are suffering," Governor Cuomo said. "We are going to extend the commercial eviction and foreclosure moratorium through January 1st. That will now align with our residential eviction moratorium so they are both extended to the same date."

i never could've imagined such a draconian assault on property rights as i've seen here in NY because science.

The 291 new signatures announced Tuesday join 489 national security leaders who previously endorsed former Vice President Biden as having "the character, principles, wisdom and leadership necessary to address a world on fire."

The new signatories include some officials who served under President Trump, such as retired Army Maj. Gen. Craig Whelden, who served as executive director of Marine Corps Forces Pacific until 2019 after retiring from active duty in 2009, and Anita Friedt, a career State Department official who started during the Reagan administration, worked on arms control during the Obama administration and stayed under Trump until 2019.

Also new on the letter is retired Lt. Col. Alfred Rascon, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2000 for heroic actions during the Vietnam War.

Meena’s image had Kamala Harris’s face photoshopped onto Durga’s body, while the face of her lion had been replaced by the Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden. At the bottom of the image, a small demon being slain by the goddess has been replaced by the face of president Donald Trump.

The image received strong criticism from a number of American Hindu groups, who called it offensive to their religious beliefs.

Trump May Be Exhausting the Voters He Needs
4:45 pm

“In the final throes of an increasingly daunting reelection campaign, President Trump is revving up his rally schedule and whipping his supporters into a frenzy with the type of nonstop outrage that helped make him the most polarizing political figure of his time,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“He suggested the governor of Michigan, already the target of an alleged kidnapping plot, should be jailed.
He expressed indifference to the shooting of a former Arizona congresswoman.
He blasted the nation’s top infectious disease expert as ‘a disaster.’
He baselessly called former Vice President Joe Biden a ‘criminal,’
and urged his attorney general to investigate him.”

“To Trump, turning the volume up to 11 is an instinct, and a near guarantee he will be the center of attention.

"But to the rest of the country, particularly voters he needs to close a 10-percentage-point polling gap,
there is growing evidence of exhaustion that may cost him crucial votes.”

Dems in Absolute Panic As Early Data Shatters Narrative in Key States

Up until this weekend, the Democratic victory narrative has been this: Dems will outperform in early and mail in voting. Republicans, leerier to mail-in voting, will opt for in person voting and will outperform on election day. However, in the end, the in-person voting will not be enough to overcome the massive early voting numbers by the Democrats.

This weekend that narrative shattered in some key states. It’s absolute panic.

Politico’s lead story today contains this revealing quote about many anxiety-ridden memos in Democratic offices:

“Democrats are poring over early vote totals, circulating anxiety-ridden campaign memos and bracing for a long two weeks.”

Michigan is chief among the Democrats’ worries. With 25% of the total vote in, compared to 2016, Republicans have a slim advantage heading into Election Day. It’s expected a rush of ballots from Republicans, leerier of mail voting, will be cast in-person on Nov. 3.

Michigan – Republicans have the early lead among early & mail-in voting:

With about 25% of the total Michigan votes in, Republicans outpace Democrats 40.2% to 38.3%.

Texas – Republicans shatter early voting expectations and it appears a blue Texas is gone:

continues with graphics:

https://www.toptradeguru.com/news/dems-in-absolute-panic-as-early-data-shatters-narrative-in-key-states/

But dems have spent a zillion dollars and are running 24/7 ads and have big tech and the MSM and poll show Biden is crushing it and the debate commission is rigged.

Giuliani Defends Hunter Biden Story
5:22 pm

Rudy Giuliani told a North Dakota radio station that the American public deserved to the story based off material from Hunter Biden’s laptop “even if it isn’t accurate.”

Said Giuliani:
“They’ve set up an Iron Curtain so you can’t get out the New York Post story which I happened to know is 100 percent accurate. But even if it isn’t accurate, the American people are entitled to know it.”

IOW, even if you of the media know that it's nothing more than a desperate attempt to try to get Trump reelected,
you must sacrifice your reputations for honesty in reporting and stand behind it.

After years of denying the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s presidency, it was only in the midst of his own presidential campaign that Donald Trump began falsely claiming Hillary Clinton was the true progenitor of the “birther” conspiracy theory claiming Obama was not born in the United States.

But that’s swapping one discredited claim for another. Numerous fact checks, reports and interviews — in 2008 and 2011, when Trump revived the controversy — revealed that although some Clinton supporters circulated rumors about Obama’s citizenship, the campaign and Clinton herself never trafficked in it.

“There has never been evidence that Clinton or her campaign started the birther rumors,” said Ben Smith, editor in chief of BuzzFeed, who as a POLITICO reporter in 2011 linked the origin of the “birther” movement to a fringe politician in Illinois. Some hardcore Clinton backers circulated the rumors in 2008, but the campaign itself steered clear.

“As we reported, some of her supporters flirted with the idea in 2008 — but it has its origins in the fever swamps beginning in Illinois in 2004,” he said.

In fact, birtherism, as it’s been called, reportedly began with innuendo by serial Illinois political candidate Andy Martin, who painted Obama as a closet Muslim in 2004. That spiraled into a concerted effort by conspiracy theorists to raise doubts about Obama’s birthplace and religion — and essentially paint him as un-American.

Martin, who briefly launched a little-noticed presidential campaign last year, has disavowed the movement he’s often credited with starting, though he still foments similarly discredited doubts about Obama’s religion.

Clinton’s 2008 hands are recoiling at Trump’s revisionism about their role in propagating the lie about Obama’s citizenship. “The suggestion that the Hillary campaign was pushing birtherism in 2008 is bunk. It's fiction,” said Phil Singer, who was Clinton’s 2008 press secretary.

Much of the insinuation that Clinton had a hand in birtherism traces to the role of her then-senior strategist Mark Penn, who issued a memo in 2007 suggesting that Clinton emphasize Obama’s upbringing in Hawaii and Indonesia and paint him as fundamentally un-American. The memo never questioned Obama’s citizenship but did suggest highlighting his “lack of American roots.”

SLATE:
What’s Really Going on With Hunter Biden’s Hard Drive? Here’s Everything We Know.

How to make sense of the weirdest, weakest October surprise ever.

by AARON MAK
OCT 19
The Hunter Biden “hard drive” story is deeply, deeply sketchy.

For the next two weeks until Election Day, expect allies of Donald Trump to repeat the same refrain: but his emails! So far, though, the revelation of Hunter Biden’s private messages and photographs has been a dud of an October surprise, largely because the story’s credibility is so evidently flimsy. It’s also confusing—both to Trump supporters who’d like to make hay out of it and to anyone else trying to understand how this whole saga came to be. How did a laptop supposedly belonging to the former vice president’s son end up in a Delaware computer repair shop, then get to Rudy Giuliani, then arrive at the New York Post? What does Steve Bannon have to do with it? Why did it make the entire right wing mad at Facebook (again)? Read on.

How did all this start? There’s a hard drive, and Hunter Biden did what on it?

The New York Post claimed, in a story published last Wednesday, to have obtained a copy of a hard drive from Hunter Biden’s laptop that contains emails revealing his foreign business dealings, along with personal photos. According to the Post, someone abandoned the laptop at a computer repair shop in Delaware, and the data on the hard drive subsequently reached the FBI and Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who is also a lawyer for President Donald Trump. Steve Bannon is said to have notified the Post of the hard drive’s existence, and Giuliani then supplied the tabloid with a copy. The Post has now run a series of exposés based on the contents of the hard drive, the most purportedly explosive of which has to do with an email that Hunter Biden supposedly received in 2015 from Vadym Pozharskyi, a board adviser at the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. In it, Pozharskyi thanks Hunter Biden for introducing him to then–Vice President Joe Biden. This would seem to be evidence limply supporting the Republicans’ allegations that Hunter Biden, who worked for Burisma, had convinced his father to do favors for the Ukrainian company using the powers of the vice presidency.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

So is any of this story credible?

A slew of journalists and intelligence officials have questioned the Post’s reporting and the source of the Hunter Biden dirt. The supposedly leaked emails support the false narrative, long pushed by the Trump campaign and Russian operatives, that Joe Biden was helping Burisma while he held office—a charge at the center of the foreign policy meddling by Trump that led to his impeachment. You’ll recall that Trump was caught trying to get Ukraine’s prime minister to announce an investigation into Hunter Biden’s involvement with Burisma, apparently to harm the elder Biden’s candidacy. (If anything, though, Joe Biden did the opposite of what Burisma wanted when he was vice president.)

Anyway, following the first New York Post story, the Biden campaign denied that any substantive meeting occurred between the then-vice president and claims that there are no records of it. Biden’s foreign policy and energy advisers also said that they’d never heard of Pozharskyi; there’s a possibility, perhaps, that the Ukrainian executive briefly met Biden at a public event, several of which were scheduled for the vice president on the day in question. (Hunter Biden had previously arranged for a potential business partner from China to shake hands with his father in the lobby of a Beijing hotel.) But so far, it doesn’t look like the meeting described in this email happened at all. Hunter’s lawyer George Mesires told the Washington Post regarding the email, “We have no idea where this came from, and certainly cannot credit anything that Rudy Giuliani provided to the NY Post, but what I do know for certain is that this purported meeting never happened.” Apart from denying that a meeting happened, Joe Biden’s campaign has not commented on the authenticity of the communications leaked from the hard drive.

There are also strong indicators that Russia had something to do with this whole affair, though nothing has surfaced definitively proving this is the case. In January, the same Russian intelligence unit that hacked Hillary Clinton’s and the Democratic National Committee’s emails in 2016 was also able to infiltrate Burisma’s systems. U.S. intelligence analysts subsequently picked up chatter indicating that stolen Burisma emails would be leaked as part of an October surprise aimed at influencing the election. Analysts were further concerned that forged materials might be included in the leak—something that, without the original materials in question, journalists can’t verify for themselves, leaving everyone to take the New York Post’s word. (And, in case you forgot, U.S. intelligence agencies once again say Russia is trying to tilt the election in favor of Trump.)

Finally, there’s New York Post journalists’ own lack of confidence in the story: The New York Times reported over the weekend that the Post staffer who was responsible for writing the majority of the first Hunter Biden article refused to put his name on it over credibility concerns. According to the Times, many staffers questioned whether the Post had done enough to verify the authenticity of the hard drive data, and one of the reporters whose name appears on the story had little to do with the writing and only found out that her byline was attached after it was published. Mediaite also reported that Fox News, which like the Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch, passed on the story due to doubts about Giuliani’s trustworthiness and the murky provenance of the hard drive data.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Got it, it’s a very sketchy “hard drive.” What exactly is on it?

Intelligence agencies warned the White House last year that Russian operatives were trying to use Giuliani as a vessel for disinformation that would hurt Joe Biden.

We really don’t know—Giuliani does not seem to have allowed other news outlets besides the Post to examine the data. Apart from the Pozharskyi emails, the Post claims that the drive also has family photos, texts between Hunter Biden and his father, and explicit selfies. Again, apart from perhaps the pictures, it’s unclear what is real or possibly forged among these materials. (Given all that—and the fact that even the journalists who reported on the hard drive don’t trust the source of information—we won’t give every allegation from the paper’s reports an airing in this article.)

Yeesh—is that why these emails aren’t making a bigger splash in the press?

Yes, due to these very shady circumstances, most mainstream media publications are approaching the story carefully. Major outlets have included numerous qualifiers when describing the hard drive, focusing more on the apparent scheming behind this leak than the contents. Facebook and Twitter have also taken steps to limit the spread of the Post’s article over concerns that the material contains private information like phone numbers and is possibly fake or hacked.

OK, but Rudy Giuliani says it’s legit. Is he trustworthy at all?

No.

Fair! Say more, though?

Intelligence agencies warned the White House last year that Russian operatives were trying to use Giuliani as a vessel for disinformation that would hurt Joe Biden. (Trump reportedly dismissed the warning by shrugging and saying, “That’s Rudy.”) The agencies decided to sound the alarm after Giuliani met with a pro-Russia member of Ukraine’s parliament named Andriy Derkach, whom the U.S. Treasury Department believes has been a Kremlin agent for more than a decade. Derkach, who has previously spread disinformation meant to influence the upcoming election, has been helping Giuliani look for damaging information about the Bidens in Ukraine. Giuliani has laughed off allegations that he’s the Kremlin’s patsy, claiming to the Daily Beast, “The chance that Derkach is a Russian spy is no better than 50/50.”

Derkach had promised to release more damaging info about the Bidens. Over the summer, he leaked misleadingly edited tapes in an attempt to expose wrongdoing by the Bidens in Ukraine. Facebook suspended Derkach’s account on Monday for engaging in “election-focused influence operations.”
That’s Rudy!

OK, explain the part about the computer repair shop in Delaware.

According to the New York Post, an unidentified individual dropped off a MacBook Pro at a Delaware computer repair shop in April 2019 and never came back for it. The shop’s owner noticed a Beau Biden Foundation sticker on the device and decided to look through the hard drive. He then alerted the FBI about the drive and gave it over to the agency. He also made a copy of the data and sent it to Robert Costello, Rudy Giuliani’s lawyer.

The owner of the shop was later revealed to be John Paul MacIsaac of Wilmington. He is an avid Trump supporter and has been repeatedly changing his story about what exactly occurred. He initially said that he wasn’t able to identify who dropped off the laptop because he is “legally blind.” MacIsaac then said that the customer had identified himself as Hunter Biden. The shop does have two cameras, but MacIsaac claims that the footage from that day was automatically deleted before he realized how important it was. He’s given conflicting accounts of how he came into contact with the FBI and says he initially made a copy of the hard drive for personal protection, citing the conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton’s associates had killed a DNC staffer for leaking information. MacIsaac has generally been cagey with the press about his dealings with Giuliani and what he found on the hard drive.

What does the government say about all of this? Don’t they supposedly possess the hard drive?

Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, who served on Trump’s impeachment-defense team, has insisted that there is no evidence that Russians or other foreign actors are behind the hard drive. The FBI is in possession of a laptop and is reportedly investigating whether the emails are linked to a foreign intelligence operation. Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress are highlighting the overall effort by Russia to discredit Biden. “We know that this whole smear on Joe Biden comes from the Kremlin. That’s been clear for well over a year now that they’ve been pushing this false narrative about the vice president and his son,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said on CNN over the weekend.

Honest, decent, truthful Rev. said...

Did Hunter actually do anything sketchy with Burisma?

Burisma did hire Hunter in 2014 in an apparent attempt to influence his father, but the elder Biden didn’t end up doing anything to help the company. In effect, Hunter leveraged his family name to get a $50,000-a-month job at the Ukrainian company. Hunter acknowledged in a 2019 interview that he exercised “poor judgment” in accepting the Burisma job but denied any wrongdoing, even though the optics were less than ideal. During his tenure with Burisma, Hunter also struggled with substance abuse, once relapsing shortly after a board meeting. Trump has sought to make Hunter’s struggle with addiction and dealings with Burisma into a campaign issue.

What does Steve Bannon have to do with this?

As with Giuliani, Bannon’s involvement in all of this is also suspicious, though not quite as clear. The Daily Beast reported on Friday that the former Trump strategist bragged, “We have the hard drive. I have the hard drive of Hunter Biden,” in an unaired interview with the Dutch news show Nieuwsuur that was filmed “weeks ago.” In late September, a YouTube channel linked to Guo Wengui—a Chinese real estate and finance billionaire who is an associate of Bannon’s and claims to be a whistleblower against China’s government—was also hyping up the upcoming release of hard disks that supposedly contained damaging information about Joe Biden. A few days later, the Twitter account for the Himalaya Movement, a Chinese separatist group backed by Bannon and Guo, sent out a tweet reading, “Bombshell… 3 hard disk drives of videos and dossier of Hunter Biden’s connections with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) have been sent to Nancy Pelosi and DOJ.” There’s no evidence definitively indicating that Guo’s media empire had any foreknowledge of the Hunter Biden leak, though the New York Post has previously run with stories seeded by Bannon and Guo. For instance, the Post circulated findings from a bogus study funded by Bannon and Guo’s nonprofits that purported to prove that COVID-19 was manufactured in a Wuhan lab. Photos of Guo and Giuliani smoking cigars together also appeared on Twitter on Oct. 11, three days before the Post published its first Hunter Biden exposé.

Is this October surprise going to affect the election that much?

Doesn’t seem like it. The supposed leaks have garnered a lot of skepticism and, save for the flimsy accusation that Joe Biden met with Pozharskyi, the supposed scandal has more to do with his son, who seems to have come off as an inadvertently sympathetic character in the Post’s depictions. Most of the right-wing agita over it, meanwhile, seems to be directed toward Facebook and Twitter executives, not any candidates for office. Besides, Trump himself has faced numerous, far more solidly reported allegations of using his office to personally enrich himself. It’s possible there are more stories to come from this cache that could have an impact; we also could learn more about the data’s origins. For now, though, this sort of mudslinging, over an issue most Americans never cared about and many see as irrelevant, seems a bit trifling while we’re in the middle of a pandemic and the president is providing daily reminders of how incapable he is of getting Americans through it.

One last question: Why does Giuliani keep inadvisably taking calls from reporters about this?

That’s Rudy!

The Washington Post Newsletter Coronavirus Updates
Important developments in the pandemic.

The latest
The pandemic has led to at least 80,000 more U.S. deaths than the official toll records, according to a report on excess mortality released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The country's tally of confirmed coronavirus deaths stood at about 220,000 as of this afternoon. But the CDC analysis found that, by early October, nearly 300,000 more people across the country had died than would be expected in a typical year. The hidden fatalities are believed to be people who died of covid-19 without being diagnosed, or who died of other causes because they were unwilling or unable to seek medical care during the outbreak.

The pandemic's shadow death toll also includes a surprisingly large number of victims in their 20s, 30s and 40s. “The number of people dying from this pandemic is higher than we think,” said Steven Woolf, director emeritus of the Center on Society and Health at Virginia Commonwealth University, who has conducted similar studies on excess fatalities. He told The Washington Post that the United States will likely suffer at least 400,000 excess deaths by the year's end.

COVID-19 forced many employees to work from home. How do businesses welcome them back—safely?

Mask manufacturers such as 3M, Honeywell and DuPont are trying to agree on a set of standards to label masks to make clear how effectively they filter viral particles. “If widely adopted, the standards could give Americans a sense of certainty and perhaps more confidence to return to offices, classrooms and public spaces next year,” our business desk wrote — but the industry players will have to overcome fierce disagreements.

Meanwhile, Jack in the Box and other companies are giving away masks that smell like food. Effectiveness rating TBD.

Some European countries that managed to avoid the worst of the pandemic's first assault are reporting sky-high infection rates as it surges across the continent again. The Czech Republic, for example, had recorded only 12,000 infections among 10 million people by early July, when thousands gathered on a bridge in Prague to throw the coronavirus a “farewell” party. Now the country is recording thousands of new infections every single day, and neighboring Poland plans to convert a national stadium into a field hospital.

British scientists are about to embark on the world's first vaccine challenge trials, in which people will be deliberately infected with the coronavirus. A few dozen volunteers “will have a purified, laboratory-grown strain of the live virus blown into their noses, while quarantined in a 22-bed biosecure unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London, where they will undergo daily, even hourly, tests over two to three weeks,” our World desk wrote. Scientists hope the strategy will shave months off vaccine development time, but some of their peers in the United States think the risk may be too great.

Other important news
House Democrats and the White House were in last-ditch negotiations Tuesday aimed at reaching an approximately $2 trillion economic relief package before the Nov. 3 election. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned the White House against making a deal before the election, according to several people.

The Supreme Court on Monday night allowed Pennsylvania election officials to count mail-in ballots received up to three days after Election Day, refusing a Republican request to prevent the procedure in a crucial swing state.

At least 33 million Americans have already voted, suggesting but not guaranteeing a record level of participation in the 2020 election.

The FDA told the President to fuck yourself.

On Sept. 23, Dr. Stephen M. Hahn left a virtual meeting of the White House’s coronavirus task force to take a call from the president’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows.

Mr. Meadows was angry with Dr. Hahn, the head of the Food and Drug Administration, for pushing new guidelines for vaccine developers, according to two senior administration officials familiar with the call who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it. The F.D.A. wanted to require two months of follow-up data to make sure a vaccine was safe and effective, all but ensuring one would not be ready by Election Day as President Trump had promised.

Mr. Meadows told the commissioner the White House would not sign off on the guidance because it was unnecessary and would delay vaccine approval, so he should drop it, the officials said.

Dr. Hahn had been overruled by the White House before, most notably when the agency caved to the president’s desire to authorize the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19 despite a lack of evidence. This time, stung by embarrassing scientific misstatements he made at a news conference in late August and concerned about the imperiled scientific credibility of the agency, Dr. Hahn would not be as obedient.

If Trump wins, China will be in charge.

And not long after winning the 2016 election, Mr. Trump reported selling a penthouse in one of his Manhattan buildings for $15.8 million to a Chinese-American businesswoman named Xiao Yan Chen, who bought the unit, previously occupied by Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, in an off-market transaction. Ms. Chen runs an international consulting firm and reportedly has high-level connections to government and political elites in China.

Mr. Trump’s tax records show that he reported a capital gain of at least $5.6 million from the penthouse sale in 2017, his first year as president.

And he paid $750 in taxes in 2017.

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

China continues to be an issue in the 2020 presidential campaign, from the president’s trade war to his barbs over the origin of the coronavirus pandemic. His campaign has tried to portray Mr. Biden as a “puppet” of China who, as vice president, misread the dangers posed by its growing power. Mr. Trump has also sought to tar his opponent with overblown or unsubstantiated assertions about Hunter Biden’s business dealings there while his father was in office.

“He’s like a vacuum cleaner — he follows his father around collecting,” Mr. Trump said recently, referring to Mr. Biden’s son. “What a disgrace. It’s a crime family.”

As he raises questions about his opponent’s standing with China, President Trump’s taxes reveal details about his own activities there, including a previously unknown bank account.

Trump Records Shed New Light on Chinese Business Pursuits https://nyti.ms/3m7cHHE

Coldheartedtruth Teller said...

Hmm

More from the New York Times article.

It is difficult to determine from the tax records precisely how much money Mr. Trump has spent trying to land business in China. The records show that he has invested at least $192,000 in five small companies created specifically to pursue projects there over the years. Those companies claimed at least $97,400 in business expenses since 2010, including some minor payments for taxes and accounting fees as recently as 2018.

But Mr. Trump’s plans in China have been largely driven by a different company, Trump International Hotels Management — the one with a Chinese bank account.

The company has direct ownership of THC China Development, but is also involved in management of other Trump-branded properties around the world, and it is not possible to discern from its tax records how much of its financial activity is China-related. It normally reports a few million dollars in annual income and deductible expenses.

In 2017, the company reported an unusually large spike in revenue — some $17.5 million, more than the previous five years’ combined. It was accompanied by a $15.1 million withdrawal by Mr. Trump from the company’s capital account.

On the president’s public financial disclosures for that year, he reported the large revenue figure, and described it only as “management fees and other contract payments.” One significant event for the company that is known to have occurred in 2017 was the buyout of its management contract for the SoHo hotel in New York, which Bloomberg reported to have cost around $6 million.

Mr. Garten would not comment on the specific amount cited by Bloomberg, but said that the contract buyout represented a “significant portion” of the company’s revenue and that the remaining money was not related to China.

Outside of China, Mr. Trump has had more success attracting wealthy Chinese buyers for his properties in other countries. His hotels and towers in Las Vegas and Vancouver, British Columbia — locales known for attracting Chinese real estate investors — have found numerous Chinese purchasers, and in at least one instance drew the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

During the 2016 campaign, a shell company controlled by a Chinese couple from Vancouver bought 11 units, for $3.1 million, in the Las Vegas tower Mr. Trump co-owns with the casino magnate Phil Ruffin. The owner of a Las Vegas-based financial services firm told The Times he was later visited by two F.B.I. agents asking about the company behind the purchases, which he said had used his office address in incorporation papers without his knowledge. It is not known what became of the inquiry.

RECENT INSIGHTS

America’s oldest voters have turned on Trump: The oldest Americans, who have outsize influence in elections due to their higher propensity to vote, helped fuel Trump’s victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016. But four years later, the voting bloc is solidly behind Democratic nominee Joe Biden, contributing to the former vice president’s advantage in states that could trigger the president’s electoral defeat. Read the story.

Voters are more concerned about Trump’s behavior around the election than Biden’s: More than half of voters (53 percent) are concerned that President Trump will refuse to step down from office if he loses, compared with 37 percent who are concerned about Biden refusing to concede. Likewise, 52 percent are concerned that Trump will prematurely declare victory versus 36 percent who expressed anxiety  that Biden will do the same. Read more.

Biden leads outright in the four most likely tipping-point states: Biden leads by 8 percentage points in Pennsylvania, 5 points in Florida, 7 points in Wisconsin, and 7 points in Michigan — the four states that FiveThirtyEight considers most likely to serve as the tipping point in the presidential race. The Democratic nominee’s lead is outside of the respective margins of error in these four states, and he also leads within the margin of error in the next three most likely tipping-point states (Minnesota, North Carolina and Arizona). View the data.

ROGER SIMON: Hunter Biden Was Trying to Tell Us Something.

Whether he did it accidentally, on purpose, or (most likely) something in between, when Hunter Biden left a laptop loaded with incriminating evidence about himself and his family, at a computer repair shop in Delaware, he was trying to tell us something.

That something was that his father, aka the “big guy,” who had only days before announced he was running for president, was big trouble.

You don’t have to be Sigmund Freud to figure that out. Nor is it hard to figure out why Hunter might have become an addict and engaged in other self-destructive acts not suitable for a family website but apparently immortalized on the hard drive.

The Joe Biden that is being sold to us ad infinitum as Mr. Just-Plain-Folks-American was not the man his son saw. (This is not to absolve Hunter of responsibility for his actions, but to put them in perspective.)

Note that one of the first of the emails published, and therefore (purposefully?) easy to find, from Hunter to his daughter Naomi, reads:

“But I don’t receive any respect and that’s fine I guess. Works for you, apparently. I hope you all can do what I did and pay for everything for this entire family for 30 years. It’s really hard, but don’t worry, unlike Pop I won’t make you give me half your salary.”

We also saw email of a prospective billion dollar deal with Chinese businessmen whose profit percentages would be divided with “10 held by H for the big guy?”

Hunter was to be Joe’s bag man. He probably was more often than we know, jetting around with his father on Air Force Two. The numbers from all these deals—Moscow, China, Kazakhstan, etc.— are staggering. More are coming soon. Just today we learn of Hunter’s (and no doubt Joe’s by extension) activities in Romania.

Bag man, indeed, but evidently it was not easy being Joe Biden’s son.

https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/408193/

you almost have to feel sorry for Hunter.

almost.

maybe 'Lunchbox Joe from Scranton' really is a mentally and emotionally abusive piece of shit after all. he certainly had no problem smearing the reputation of the truck driver involved in the accident that killed his first wife and child, repeatedly labelling the guy as a drunk driver when it was a complete and demonstrable fucking LIE.

wouldn't it be fitting if slow Joe's defeat on election night was so fucking epic he collapsed due to a debilitating stroke?

MILFORD, N.H. —

Milford police are trying to track down whoever is behind a series of letters that were sent to supporters of President Donald Trump threatening to burn down their homes.

Kelly, a Milford resident who asked to be identified only by her first name, said she received one of the letters.

"Dear neighbor," the letter read. "You have been identified by our group as being a Trump supporter. Your address has been added to our database as a target when we attack should Trump not concede the election."

The anonymous author went on to say Kelly should hope her home insurance has fire coverage.

"I was very taken aback," Kelly said.

Milford police said the same letter was mailed to other homes that have signs supporting Trump's presidential campaign. The department is now investigating and has contacted the state Attorney General's Office.

"This is my home," Kelly said. "You're not supposed to threaten my home. I'm very worried in the sense that this is going on in my town."

Two people in Brookline have also received a letter.

"I was kind of quite shocked that anyone would send a letter out with that type of threat," said Brookline police Chief Bill Quigley.

Quigley said he alerted the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and said whoever is behind the letters could face serious charges.

"Not only with us, with criminal threatening," Quigley said. "It's on a felony level, because of the threat of burning homes down and causing injury, but it could also be with the postal inspectors, something on the federal level."

Kelly said she wanted to share her story to encourage others who received the letter to come forward and contact their local authorities.

Authorities in Florida and Alaska on Tuesday were investigating threatening emails sent to Democratic voters that claimed to be from the Proud Boys, a far-right group supportive of President Trump, but appeared instead to be a deceptive campaign making use of a vulnerability in the organization’s online network.
The emails, which appeared to target Democrats using data from digital databases known as “voter files,” told recipients the group was “in possession of all your information” and instructed voters to change their party registration and cast their ballots for Trump.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT has reported that it has about 450 pages of records detailing its spending at properties owned by President Trump. The public has a right to this information. The State Department, responding to a public records lawsuit brought by The Post, said in August it would try to produce 300 of the pages by Oct. 15.
Want to guess how many pages it actually coughed up that day? Two — that’s right, a paltry two pages. No explanation was provided and, in a further thumb in the eye to the public’s right to know, the State Department signaled it has no plans to release more until mid-November. That is, of course, after the election that will decide whether Mr. Trump gets another four years in office. The State Department’s stonewalling is part of an overall effort by the president and his administration to keep secret how much public money has gone to his businesses, again raising troubling questions of what Mr. Trump is hiding. It’s also a sign of how he is infecting the entire government with his contempt for the law and the public.

GOP pollster Frank Luntz said President Donald Trump and his team are emphasizing all the wrong issues ahead of the Nov. 3 election, calling the political campaign the worst he’s ever seen.

According to The Hill, Luntz slammed Trump and his advisers at a briefing for the British strategic advising company Global Counsel on Tuesday.

“I’ve never seen a campaign more miscalibrated than the Trump campaign. Frankly, his staff ought to be brought up on charges of political malpractice,” Luntz said, according to the outlet.

“It is the worst campaign I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been watching them since 1980. They’re on the wrong issues. They’re on the wrong message. They’ve got their heads up their asses,” he added. “Your damn job is to get your candidate to talk about things that are relevant to the people you need to reach. And if you can’t do your damn job then get out.”

Luntz said that “nobody cares about Hunter Biden,” the son of Democratic nominee Joe Biden and a favored target of right-wing media attacks. With weeks before Election Day, the Trump camp has seized aggressively on a dubious story published by the New York Post that alleges the Bidens were involved in high-level political corruption.

Why Trump’s Rallies Probably Aren’t Working
6:39 am Politico:
“Trump views rallies in battleground states as the linchpin of his closing argument, a means to excite his supporters and ensure they vote on Nov. 3. But many Republicans close to the White House, former senior administration officials and political advisers say the rallies are largely a way to keep the unscripted and undisciplined president occupied, since they do little to persuade new Trump voters. Rallies, they note, do not woo senior citizens, independents or suburban women, many of whom have moved away from the Trump ticket this election cycle. Most of Trump’s rallies are no longer televised nationally as they once were.

“And with coronavirus infection rates climbing, the Trump rallies often draw negative headlines in local news markets because the packed events defy public health guidelines, featuring few masks and almost no social distancing.”

Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett served for nearly three years as a trustee on the board of private Christian schools that “effectively barred admission to children of same-sex parents and made it plain that openly gay and lesbian teachers weren’t welcome in the classroom.

The three schools, in Indiana, Minnesota, and Virginia, are affiliated with People of Praise, an insular religious community of which Barrett and her husband have been longtime members.

A Third Surge of Coronavirus Has Taken Hold

“After weeks of spread and warnings in certain areas, a third surge of coronavirus infections has now firmly taken hold across much of the United States.

“The latest wave — which is raging most acutely in the Midwest and the West, but is also spreading in various areas around the country — threatens to be the worst of the pandemic yet.

“Its arrival comes as cooler weather is forcing people indoors, setting up a grueling winter that will test the discipline of many Americans who have grown weary of wearing masks and turning down invitations to see family and friends. Over the last week, the country has averaged about 59,000 new cases a day, the most since the beginning of August. The daily total could soon surpass 75,687, a record previously set on July 16.”

A Biden Landslide?
6:18 am NEW YORK TIMES:
“For some Democrats, Mr. Trump’s attention to red states is also a sign of something else — something few in the party want to discuss out loud, given their scars from Mr. Trump’s surprise victory in 2016. It’s an indication that Mr. Biden could pull off a landslide in November, achieving an ambitious and rare electoral blowout that some Democrats think is necessary to quell any doubts — or disputes by Mr. Trump — that Mr. Biden won the election.

“On one level, such a scenario is entirely plausible based on the weeks and the breadth of public polls that show Mr. Biden with leads or edges in key states. But this possibility runs headlong into the political difficulties of pulling off such a win, and perhaps even more, the psychological hurdles for Democrats to entertain the idea. Many think that Mr. Trump, having pulled off a stunning win before, could do it again, even if there are differences from 2016 that hurt his chances.”

Trump’s Cash Dwindled to $63 Million Entering October
10:02 pm THE NEW YORK TIMES:
“President Trump’s re-election campaign committee ended September with only $63.1 million in the bank despite canceling some television buys late last month, leaving him badly outmatched financially against Joe Biden in the final stretch of the campaign.

“New filings with the Federal Election Commission showed the extent of Mr. Trump’s cash troubles, which are severe enough that he diverted time from key battleground states and flew to California on Sunday for a fund-raiser with just over two weeks until Election Day. The president ended September with just over half as much money as he had at the beginning of the month.”

Facebook and Twitter's frantic attempts to stop the spread of the New York Post's Hunter Biden story didn't prevent the article from becoming the top story about the election on those platforms last week, according to data from NewsWhip.

Why it matters: The data shows that even swift, aggressive content suppression may not be swift or aggressive enough to keep down a story with as much White House backing and partisan fuel as this one.

By the numbers: The Post's story generated 2.59m interactions (likes, comments, shares) on Facebook and Twitter last week — more than double the next biggest story about Trump or Biden.

House Districts Full of Danger Signs for Trump
8:24 am
David Wasserman:
“In late October of 2016, district-level polling was full of flashing red warning signs for Hillary Clinton: from northern Wisconsin to New York’s Southern Tier and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, single-digit leads for Donald Trump in September had expanded to double digits in heavily white working-class areas. And although much of this party polling was never released publicly, it turned out to be prescient.

“Fast forward to 2020: district-level polls are full of danger signs for Trump. In both parties’ private surveys — used to make key resource allocation decisions — he’s routinely underperforming his 2016 margins by eight to ten points, consistent with national polls. As a result, one well-placed GOP member told us this week ‘it would be a pleasant surprise if we only lost ten House seats.'”

POLITICO:
Trump Has Contributed Only $8,000 to His Campaign

8:20 am
“Back in early September, Trump weighed spending as much as $100 million of his own money on his reelection bid, according to Bloomberg News. When asked by reporters if he planned to self-fund part of his run, Trump said, ‘If I have to, I would.'”

“But the money has not materialized. Trump has contributed just over $8,000 to his campaign this election cycle, according to FEC data.”

Obama Returns to the Campaign Trail
7:25 am CNN:
“Barack Obama had always intended to sit out the first presidential election of his post-presidency, taking heed of the private guidance given to him from Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush.

“Obama vastly preferred governing to campaigning, his friends have long known, so they believed him when he said he looked forward to watching from the sidelines. But those plans were tossed aside by the election of President Trump and his first term in office.

“Obama is poised to return to the campaign trail here on Wednesday, making his first in-person appearance in his effort to help Joe Biden in the waning days of his bid for the White House. If the election of Trump was a reaction to the Obama presidency, the November race offers another opportunity to take the country’s measure of the men.”
__________

And why hasn't Obama gotten involved a lot sooner than this?

That's easy. "Uncle Joe" hasn't needed him.

There is one good reason why Trump should walk away from that debate:

It's going to be fair. He won't be able to talk over Biden as he did before.

He desperately needs it.

Senate Republicans Sour on Trump as They Try To Save Their Majority
Sens. John Cornyn and Ben Sasse have spoken out sharply against Trump's policies and character as the election nears.

Earlier this year, Senate Republicans saved Donald Trump's presidency from a premature end. Now some of those same senators are acting like they don't think Trump will be around much longer.

"The best check on a Biden presidency is for Republicans to have a majority in the Senate," Sen. Thom Tillis (R–N.C.) told Politico recently. And now two Senate Republicans are explicitly criticizing the president.

In an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Sen. John Cornyn (R–Texas) claimed to have differed with Trump on several issues, including trade, the debt and deficit, and using military funds to build the border wall. Cornyn described his relationship with Trump as an almost strained one.

Similarly, Sen. Ben Sasse (R–Nebr.), in comments leaked to the Washington Examiner, described Trump as someone who "kisses dictators' butts" and "sells out our allies." Sasse went out to say that Trump "mocks evangelicals behind closed doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. He's flirted with white supremacists." And he thinks young people may "become permanent Democrats because they've just been repulsed by the obsessive nature of our politics or if women who were willing to still vote with the Republican Party in 2016 decide that they need to turn away from this party permanently in the future."

These aren't the only Senate Republicans to speak negatively about the man in the White House. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R–Ky.) recently criticized the president's COVID-19 response, saying at an event in Kentucky that Trump was not "approaching protections from this illness in the same way that I thought was appropriate."

Unsurprisingly, Trump's response has been heated. On Twitter, he called "Little Ben Sasse" "stupid and obnoxious" and a "liability to the Republican Party" and urged the senator to "gracefully 'RETIRE.'"

Tillis, Sasse, Cornyn, and McConnell seem to be expecting a Trump loss, and thus may be preparing to stand as a more traditionally conservative opposition to a Biden administration. And Cornyn and Sasse may be trying preemptively to rehabilitate themselves from Trumpism. Both senators face reelection races, and the latter may have presidential ambitions of his own. While both Cornyn and Sasse are likely to win their elections, the fact that they feel the need to emphasize this message is telling.

There is only so much that words can do here. Both Cornyn and Sasse voted against bringing more witnesses to impeachment. Cornyn claims that he was opposed to using a national emergency declaration to fund Trump's border wall, but voted against a bill that would have stopped just that.

But even empty rhetoric can have political ramifications. Sasse and Cornyn's comments could be an early sign of a larger Senate trend.

North Carolina Could Be the State to Watch
10:40 am
Harry Enten:
“No party has won the state by more than 4 points over the last three cycles. Barack Obama won it by less than a point in 2008. Mitt Romney took it by 2 points in 2012. And Trump won it by a little less than 4 points in 2016, making it one of only six states Trump won by less than 5 points in 2016.

“But unlike a lot of other important swing states, North Carolina has a history of voters casting a lot of ballots early. The state allows those early votes to be processed before election day, so it shouldn’t take days to count much of the vote.

“The state does allow votes postmarked by election day to be counted, even if they arrive after polls close. Those votes, however, are likely to make up less than 10% of the total pool of voters. In other words, unless the race is really close (which it could be), North Carolina should give us a fairly good insight into both the presidential and Senate landscapes on election night.”

My husband died of COVID-19 and I have just one plea to make of you
Oct 18, 2020

By Star-Ledger Guest Columnist
By Alice Roberts

After catching COVID-19 that required a brief stay in the hospital, President Trump blithely said, “Don’t let it take over your lives.”

It’s much too late for that, of course. For my family and me, it took over our lives when it took my husband, Rob.

Rob was a beloved police officer and likely contracted COVID-19 while working an overtime shift, like he often did, to help support our family of three kids, two geckos, a dog, a cat and two hamsters. Many shifts were open in his department because his colleagues were becoming sick with the virus. By April, eight of them tested positive out of a department of about 24 people.

Rob’s first COVID-19 test was mislabeled, and the second one took too long to come back. When he collapsed at our home, we still did not know he had it. His coworkers rushed to our house and resuscitated him, risking their own lives to save his. In the hospital, a talented team of doctors and nurses gave him powerful drugs, and he recovered from the virus. However, Rob’s brain never rebounded from the lack of oxygen from when he collapsed.

In the hospital, Rob’s mother and I saw him in person only twice because of restrictions during the pandemic — first on Mother’s Day, and then the next morning when he was taken off the ventilator. He was 45 years old.

President Trump only sees people in terms of winners and losers. So, let us calculate the losses we have endured these past 10 months under his failed leadership.

For me, I have lost my husband. Years ago, Rob and I met at a charity basketball game of “teachers versus police officers.” We were on opposite sides that day. But for the next 20 years, we built a life together, getting married, buying a fixer-upper in my hometown and raising a family. This school year, I have taken unpaid time off from teaching – a job I love – which means I have lost my benefits, as well as my salary. Like many working parents, I had no one to watch my kids as they learn from home.

Our children have lost their dad, who helped them with their homework, coached them on their many sports teams, and taught them to always be kind to others. My eighth- and 11th-grade daughters are learning 100% virtually now. My son, who is in fifth grade, insisted on going to school, despite my fears that he could get sick, too. Allowing him to see some peers seemed important right now.

Our community lost an excellent police officer. After he died, I found an award he got for saving lives that he had tossed in his closet. He was proud to be a cop but did not think much of accolades. He just wanted to help people. While on domestic calls, he would often sit with families going through some of their darkest moments, telling them that it would be alright. At Rob’s funeral, people came out by the thousands for the procession through our small borough. I wanted to tell everyone that it would be alright, like he would have.

Our nation is on the losing side of a battle with this pandemic. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs, potentially their homes, too. We’ve all lost our freedoms to go about our daily lives, whether it’s going to school, the movies or the YMCA, without the fear that we could get sick.

We have lost more than 216,000 Americans who weren’t able to escape COVID-19 the way President Trump did. Instead of responding to the pandemic by bringing the nation together and
doing whatever it would take to control the pandemic, he ignored it, downplayed it, and pointed fingers. And instead of using his own recovery to show empathy, level with the public, and admit he was wrong —something that could have made a difference — he chose vanity, acting like he knows more than the scientists, including Dr. Anthony Fauci.

As our collective losses continue to pile up, what has President Trump lost? Nothing. At least not yet. My hope is that he loses this election.

A woman who lost her husband to the novel coronavirus told CNN that she spoke to Joe Biden last night, after her Newark Star Ledger op-ed pleading with Americans to vote Donald Trump out of office went viral.

Said Alice Roberts:
“It was incredible. He called me, and he told me about his tragedies in his life… It was honestly just like talking to a friend.”

She added:
“It was like 11:30pm and we just chatted for probably about 20 minutes. There’s not a lot of highlights in my days recently but that was definitely a highlight.”

Trump Will End His Presidency as He Began It

“As the Donald Trump parenthesis in the republic’s history closes, he is opening the sluices on his reservoir of invectives and self-pity. A practitioner of crybaby conservatism — no one, he thinks, has suffered so much since Job lost his camels and acquired boils — and ever a weakling, Trump will end his presidency as he began it: whining.”
__________

Good point. Trump will end up being an out-of-touch "parenthesis" in our history:

A bad example to learn from but a good example for how to do better.
